This Grade-II listed Georgian townhouse in the historic Cheshire town of Congleton doesn't shortchange guests when it comes to rooms. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. Set within the grounds of a Grade II listed Georgian house, you’ll be welcomed by peaceful gardens and a wonderful sense of character. It’s worth noting there are steep stairs leading up to the main floor and the garden is shared with the owners, but there are plenty of quiet spots to discover and you will have access to a private hot tub (with views overlooking the orchard). Breakfast is included, children’s amenities can be provided and you'll find a lot to explore in the surroundings – Market Drayton is just over a mile away. 

The Garden of Tranquility 

Every care has been taken to modernise this Victorian cottage without diminishing its period charm. We love the old-world touches, like the cast iron heaters, sparkling chandeliers and ornate vintage mirrors. Escaping from the hustle and bustle of the big city is a no-brainer here. Throw open your windows in the morning, and you’ll hear birdsong – you might even see a passing deer or two. Whip up a quick breakfast in the fully equipped kitchen, and then put on your walking shoes. Miles of open countryside await right on your doorstep – the cottage is at the end of a drive where the village gives way to the natural world. You can spend entire days hiking the patchwork of fields and farms crisscrossed by a web of brooks. You’ll quickly work up an appetite after all that exploring. You can grab a meal in the village pub, the local chippy or the Tandoori restaurant. However, if you want more variety, a five-minute drive will take you to nearby Ramsbottom, where you'll have a much wider choice of cafes, restaurants, and food shops. A thirty-minute drive will have you in central Manchester, in the heart of all that the city has to offer. In the evening, fill the bathtub and feel the relaxation wash over you.

With 5 acres at your disposal, this rustic cottage in the Peak District is the ideal escape for anyone looking to indulge in a slice of rural peace. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger. In the summer months, you can ward off the heat by slipping into the beautifully clear, private pool. Autumn and spring would best be spent strolling the large garden – you might even pack a basket and thermos for an impromptu picnic when you find a spot that you’re particularly drawn to. 

Select one of the books in the library and curl up with it on the leather sofa, only getting up to top off your coffee. Evenings can be spent watching a movie in front of the crackling fire or by playing board games – just as long as you don’t forget the cocoa. If it’s not too nippy out yet, you might also find an alfresco meal at sunset to be one of your favourite moments of the day.
