This home in the heart of Chester is full of thoughtful touches like fresh flowers, a breakfast hamper, books and board games for the children, and even yoga mats and blocks should you feel the urge to ‘om’ while staying here. From the peace and quiet of the street, you’d never guess you were just a two-minute walk from Chester’s historic centre. Almost all the town's biggest sights are within walking distance in fact – you’re minutes from Grosvenor Park, the River Dee, Chester Racecourse, and the Roman Amphitheatre. Built in the 19th century, the house has been fully renovated and has a bright, fresh feel to it that is instantly welcoming. Decorated in refreshing whites, there are bright splashes of orange, green, and yellow to greet you in the morning. And after a day of sightseeing, the courtyard garden is a suntrap and the perfect place to enjoy a refreshing drink or reviving cup of tea.

There's an awful lot to like about this Regency home, but to start with anything but the incredible location feels almost sacrilegious. Sitting on top of Chester's old walls and overlooking the River Dee, you'll spend countless hours on the rear terrace, dining and relaxing with this most scenic of backdrops.

That being said, the home's interior is quite impressive, too. The tall windows and high ceilings lend an innate grandeur, and this is only furthered by the contemporary design that gives classic tropes – chandeliers, wood-panelled bookshelves, copper bathtubs – a modern-day spin. The stunning kitchen and cosy living room complete with roaring fireplace are sure to be favourites among those with sophisticated tastes, but there's also a massive games room and home cinema to keep everybody entertained.

When you can prise yourself away from this home's many amenities, there's a wealth of historic attractions, buzzy bars and riverside walking paths to explore in local Chester, but there are other options a little further afield – beaches on the north Welsh coastline can be reached in 45 minutes' drive, while Liverpool sits a similar amount of time to the north.

A small town with an intriguing history, the compact grid system of Caerwys was allegedly the model layout for the first settler who mapped out the city of Philadelphia. But far from its transatlantic, urban sibling, this quaint village has stuck to its rustic roots. At the heart of the town, a five-minute walk from the golf club, four from the 13th century St. Michaels Church, and less than a minute from your nearest pub, this cottage is ready to welcome you home. As you arrive, its rugged stone exterior oozes rural, village charm. The white door beckons you inside, where underfloor heating allows you to explore every room in warmth and comfort. Its cosy, traditional lounge features a wood-burning stove and plump leather sofas – perfect for snuggling up with a classic novel as you sip hot chocolate. Built a few years ago, this beautiful conversion may still bear some resemblance to a barn with its stone clad facade, but that’s where the similarities end. Inside you’ll find simple, clean lines and, apart from a few pops of colour, a fairly neutral colour palette. Stylish, and clearly modern, the home’s crowning glory is the wide expanse of green that can be admired from the front door. Stare out over the beautiful dips and peaks as you take your seat at the wrought-iron table outside and nurse your first cup of coffee of the day. 

Breakfast can also be enjoyed out here if you prefer, although the wood dining table in the living space is elegant, and with its position right next to a window, you don’t entirely lose sight of the scenic views on offer. 

With a real focus on reconnecting you with nature, most of the ground floor rooms open up to let the fresh country air in – take a nap on the cushy bed with the doors ajar and wake up refreshed. 

Walk the grounds or watch the little ones run around on the lawn whilst you enjoy a glass of wine in a sun lounger. This is also a great spot for sunsets, but before that, you can drive out and explore the rural Welsh beauty of this area, you might want to stop off at the Rhug Estate Farm Shop and drive-thru, about six minutes away, to refuel before perhaps enjoy two splendid nearby reservoir walks: Brenig and Alwyn

Snuggled at the southern point of Snowdonia National Park in Sarnau, this quaint abode is made for rural exploration. If you don't fancy the challenging terrains of Snowdon, there are various walking and cycling trails close by to the cottage.

After a bracing paddle, nip over to Prestatyn for its traditional pubs and laidback restaurants. Head home in the early evening to watch the sunset from your enviable vantage point then retreat to the quiet bedrooms for a peaceful night’s sleep.

This charming stone cottage in North Wales accommodates two guests and one child, with spectacular views of the Snowdonia Mountains from a secluded position above the Eglwysbach valley. Slow down at this Welsh cottage set in the slate mining town of Blaenau Ffestiniog fringing the mighty Snowdonia National Park. Inside, the original period features of this slate-clad home have been carefully restored to create a modern family home boasting comfortable interiors. The welcome hamper stuffed with local goodies is a nice touch, and outside, there's an enclosed terrace to savour morning cuppas. Parking on the road outside the cottage can be tricky, but with a free car park nearby, we don't think it's a dealbreaker. When you're ready for an adventure, Snowdonia National Park is just a short drive away. Or stay local and climb the surrounding Moelwynion Mountains to reach Stiniog –⁠ the views are worth the climb.

This cosy cottage is tucked down a quiet street within the historic walls of Conwy. Perfectly sized for two guests, there’s an open-plan living room with a wood-burning fire, a snug bedroom and a small courtyard (shared with the neighbours). Two dogs are welcome to join you here, plus there’s a sweet welcome pack with Prosecco provided for your arrival. Outside, you’ll find everything you could need on the doorstep. From here, it’s a short walk to the castle, beaches and amenities. It’s also a great base for guests looking to adventure further afield and explore Snowdonia National Park.

This delightful townhouse is on the beachfront of quiet Rhos-on-Sea. For a coastal getaway and the chance to experience the charm of a small town, look no further. 

The house is just across the road from the beach, so each morning you’ll wake up to the sound of the sea gently rushing to shore. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room showcase the home’s prime beachfront location – if you’re anything like us, you’ll lose track of how long you spend gazing at the peaceful view. There’s a small garden at the front of the house, where you might enjoy a cuppa while watching the fishing boats in the distance, as well as a sunny patio at the back of the house, ideal for takeaway dinners of fish and chips after long days spent on the beach. 

When you’ve had your fill of sailing, swimming and sea fishing from the beach, there’s still plenty to explore nearby. You might like to bring your bikes and set off along the coastal track. Conwy and its gorgeous castle are just twelve minutes away by car, which makes for a lovely afternoon out. Pop into a cafe for lunch before visiting the castle and taking in the history. Snowdonia National Park is also within easy reach, so any hikers in your group will be happy – a thirty-two-minute drive will see you setting off on walks that guarantee gorgeous scenery.

In the idyllic mining own of Blaenau Ffestiniog, this home was once an old chapel dating back to 1861. The building has been lovingly renovated, featuring an open-plan kitchen and snug area ideal for family living. There’s a pool table here too, which is boung to keep both the kids and grown-ups entertained for a few hours. When it comes to things to see and do, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. We recommend heading into town to rent bikes and exploring some of the many biking routes on offer, which will have you riding past old quarries, lakes and rivers.

Nestled in the heart of the Welsh countryside, this rustic holiday home is the perfect setting for a relaxing getaway with family or friends. Once a working granary, this cosy cottage has been converted into a stylish home for up to six people, boasting three comfy bedrooms and a gorgeous, wraparound garden, ideal for soaking up some of that elusive British sunshine. Set within the grounds of a Grade II listed Georgian house, you’ll be welcomed by peaceful gardens and a wonderful sense of character. It’s worth noting there are steep stairs leading up to the main floor and the garden is shared with the owners, but there are plenty of quiet spots to discover and you will have access to a private hot tub (with views overlooking the orchard). Breakfast is included, children’s amenities can be provided and you'll find a lot to explore in the surroundings – Market Drayton is just over a mile away.

Swap the noise of daily humdrum with the soft sounds of a babbling brook and birdsong at this Welsh gem of a home, set high in the Mid Wales hillsides overlooking a river and woodlands fringing Cwmllinau village.

From way up here in this restful nook of the world, you could feel a million miles from anywhere – which is just how we like things. But if you fancy spreading your wings, you’re central to Snowdonia National Park and Cardigan Bay for inspiring days out, as well as the postcard-pretty market towns of Machynlleth and Dolgellau for all the Welsh charm you’re chasing. And even closer to home, the charming village of Cwmllinau (1.2 miles away) with its traditional inn for swift pints and a warm welcome.

Back home, the enormous beauty outside is taking centre stage – and don’t the homeowners know it. They recently installed bi-fold doors leading out onto an impressive elevated terrace to make the very best of its setting. It’s a stunning spot to sit back and admire the tranquil views and multitude of birds that visit the feeding stand. 

Indoors, the cottage’s old bones are beautifully restored to make this home sing with Welsh slate floors, exposed stonework, and oak beams. While a luxurious freestanding slipper bath and wood-burning fire (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) are the cherry on the top.

This home is perfect for solo travellers or couples seeking a quiet base outside the Shrewsbury town centre. With a south-facing garden and space for alfresco dining, this home is a welcoming spot to unwind after a day strolling around The Quarry Park. The inside is simple and practical, with lots of room to relax – the kitchen is primed for home-cooked meals prepared with ingredients you picked up from Shrewsbury Market Hall. Location-wise, you’re within easy driving distance of the town centre’s restaurants, galleries and theatres.

The medieval town of Shrewsbury is the truly historic heart of Shropshire, with nearly 700 listed buildings in a town of just over 70,000 people. With such a striking skyline and such fine examples of 15th-century construction techniques, it’s no surprise that your home is another architectural marvel. This terraced house has been completely refurbished in a superbly modern fashion. Our favourite spot has to be the bright and airy open-plan living space. With its wonderful bi-folding doors, this clever design essentially removes the wall between your home and your south-facing courtyard garden (perfect for the unpredictable English weather). Mid-century furniture looks stylish in the lounge, while the roll-top tub up in the master en-suite brings a vintage edge to proceedings. For more on local history, take a stroll through town to reach Shrewsbury Museum & Art Gallery in just eighteen minutes. Another fantastic walk is along the River Severn. Your home is just three minutes from the riverbank, from where you can follow it all the way across the border to Wales. It’s definitely one for experienced hikers with a strong pair of boots though, at just over ten miles away.

Town of Flowers

The ample hilly walking routes and quaint villages are reason enough to pay a visit to the Shropshire countryside, but just in case you need another incentive, this lodge has the perfect perk in the shape of a hot tub on the terrace. What better way to toast a productive day than by clinking glasses in bubbling water?

We're happy to say that the home's living quarters are just as romantic, with wooden walls, floors and ceilings lending the feel of an Alpine ski chalet, and the fireplace only adding to this sense of cosiness. The French doors bring in plentiful amounts of natural light and also have the added benefit of looking out to the private garden, which even features a waterfall.

When the weather permits, it's easy to pass hours out in the open air thanks to the seating on the covered terrace and the barbecue ready and waiting for summer feasts. You're also spoilt for choice when it comes to nearby locations for bracing rambles, as the home sits on the edge of the Shropshire Hills AONB. Stokesay Castle is five minutes' drive down the road, while the charming country town of Church Stretton is ten minutes in the other direction.

Once a humble farm building back in the past, this home is now a Grade-II listed home surrounded by three acres of grounds and orchards in rural Cheshire.

Despite this sense of heritage, the interior is more contemporary in style, with stark white walls, a smart grey kitchen and a whirlpool tub in one of the bathrooms. Of course, it wouldn't feel like a real country getaway without a log-burner and there's one ready and waiting for chilly evenings in the living room.

If you're visiting during the warmer months, however, there's a private patio complete with a gas barbecue, as well as plenty of quiet spots out among the grounds. The hosts really make the most of this outdoor space and are happy to share their homemade produce — be it cider, apple juice or fresh eggs from the chickens that also call the address home.

It's fair to say that the home's location is isolated, but there are plenty of distractions if you look hard enough. Cyclists and walkers are fond of Bickerton Hill, which lies ten minutes' drive away, while the historic town of Chester only takes half an hour to reach in the car.
