If you’re looking for a peaceful escape to the Brecon Beacons with a few luxuries thrown in, this is the cottage for you. Set within 12 acres of estate grounds, there are plenty of walks for dogs and humans alike. If you’re seriously into your hiking, then the trails right from the cottage’s front door into the peaks of the Brecon Beacons (including Pen Y Fan) won’t disappoint. For the more sedate option, follow the flat canal path into the charming town of Brecon for cafés and shops. On returning, treat yourself to a complimentary massage at The Treatment Studio in the estate. The cottage itself radiates history from its old stone walls and low, timber-beamed ceilings. A little library of books and wood-burner in the living room adds to that away-from-it-all feeling. In the kitchen and living room, the flagstone floor is heated underfoot so there’s no sacrificing comfort for aesthetics here. Upstairs, the master bedroom comes with a glorious sleigh bed to send you off to sleep.

This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day. Upstairs, the bedroom welcomes you with exposed oak beams and a natural stone wall that perfectly complements the black wrought iron bed frame. Step across the hall to discover a beautiful bathroom with a double-ended tub and a walk-in shower. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

This grade II listed Georgian House in Ludlow is everything we look for in a quiet village getaway. Rebuilt and lived in by former glove makers from the late 1600s, this home is steeped in history, dating back to the Civil War – and doesn't it show. There are heaps of original features to these cosy digs. We especially love the handmade oak doors, wood beam ceilings and intricate fireplace that have been professionally restored by master craftsmen. While these period features add interest, the comfy living room is our favourite spot, with its realistic optimyst stove and large L-shaped sofa. Toast up those toes in front of the fire with a good book and a glass of wine in hand – you'll feel all warm and homely in no time at all. Step outside of this 17th-century building and explore one of the loveliest market towns in England that's positively brimming with listed buildings, medieval castles and striking churches. Take a short twelve-minute walk up Corve Street to the town centre and explore this historic place for yourself.

This barn conversion in deepest Herefordshire is bursting with rural authenticity. Not only is the property located close to a peaceful nature reserve complete with lakes, but it's also been Grade-II listed to protect its historical importance. However, despite this impressive pedigree, the home's interior is pretty contemporary, with a sleek kitchen, four-poster bedrooms and tiled bathrooms sitting quite comfortably underneath the original wooden ceiling beams. Out the front, there's a private garden with seating and views of hills and forests, but there's also an additional courtyard to the back that's shared with neighbours. If gazing out at the countryside vista inspires you to explore this beautiful county, you're well-placed for bird-spotting and long rambles, perhaps finished with a meal at The Stagg Inn, a well-praised gastropub that sits no more than two minute's walk from your front door.

This can be enjoyed from the big bay windows or the comfort of the outdoor terrace. Better still, you can head down to the home's private shingle beach which also has a small cave to explore. Back inside the home, the interior is traditional, with portraits hanging on the walls and a large wooden dining table a regal centrepiece to gather the group around after the day's excursions. The town of Beaumaris with its castle, pier and beach take just six minutes to reach in the car, while you can get to Penrhyn Zip World in twenty minutes if you're looking for hi-octane thrills.

The Marquess

Get off the beaten track at this remote retreat set deep within the Herefordshire countryside, close to the Welsh border. Originally the farm's dairy, it's been lovingly converted from a derelict outbuilding to stylish home from home in just a few short years.

Inside, discover a cute contemporary farmhouse style, with beautiful natural stone flooring, a sleek kitchen and an inviting seating area placed within warming distance of the wood burner.

Cider House Rules

On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

Hergest Lee

This home was once a hayloft in a former life — the original circular window on the front is so shaped for pitching hay through — but today it's a perfectly cosy space for a rural getaway. Despite this functional heritage, you can safely banish any thoughts of cramped living quarters. Illuminated by a series of skylights, guests get access to a recently refitted kitchen that is plenty big enough for cooking up hearty dinners, as well as a lounge with comfy furnishings for sprawling out upon after long country walks. There is no shortage of outdoor pursuits to undertake in North Shropshire and just across the Welsh border, including wandering along the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, only twenty-four minutes away in the car. The Boat House gastropub on the outskirts of Ellesmere is only six minutes' walk away, too.
