This old fisherman's cottage is set in one of Cornwall's quieter villages, Gorran Haven, and is a little slice of tranquillity for families and friends. Less than five minutes from the beach, the home has views over the sea, including from the south-facing patio, which is perfect for unwinding with a glass of wine at sunset. There's an electric AGA in the country-style kitchen for preparing family feasts, while the cosy lounge has a rustic log-burner if you need to warm up after a dip in the ocean. Kids will love the snug upstairs, with their very own TV and sofa. The village centre is a short stroll away, as are two beaches – Little Perhaver beach avoids some of the crowds found on neighbouring Great Perhaver and is a two-minute walk from your front door. The South West Coast Path also runs close by this spot and can be followed along clifftops until you reach the charming village of Portmellon.

Utterly enchanting were our thoughts when we first saw this beautifully renovated Grade II listed Charlestown home – this place is very special indeed. Relax in the lovely, secluded south-facing garden or in the glass-covered courtyard filled with scented jasmine and verdant tree ferns – it's the perfect spot for a glass of Cornish fizz in the evening while doing a bit of star gazing. 

We love the bedroom, which is open to the rafters, as well as its cast-iron freestanding bathtub. On stormy nights, you may even hear the sound of the waves – what a wonderful way to fall asleep.

The following day, help yourself to tea or coffee, and feast on scrumptious Cornish cinnamon buns, provided courtesy of your hosts Antonia and David. They can also deliver oven-ready meals for lunch or dinner. 

If you prefer to eat out, there are an array of tempting restaurants on your doorstep to choose from. Or pop to the deli and take a picnic down to Charlestown Beach, a one-minute stroll away. Other beaches to try in the area include the golden sands of Porthpean, a five-minute drive. For history lovers, the Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre is a one-minute saunter, or keen hikers can have a walk around Gribben Head, a fifteen-minute drive from this home.

Just be sure to pack comfortable shoes – Polruan's steep hills and narrow streets make driving challenging, so travelling on foot is the best way to explore.

Fowey, with its art galleries, boutiques and fantastic restaurants, is nearby too. The Polruan Ferry takes you across the estuary to Fowey in under fifteen minutes.

Readymoney Cove Vistas

Most tourists make a beeline for the Cornish coast – but little do they know that this beloved landscape is home to another beautiful feature, the Fal River. The surroundings here are slightly different, where green pasture gives way to mixed woodland and small pebbled riverside beaches. This characterful, quintessentially Cornish cottage dates back to the 1800s and provides perfect panoramic views over these stunning vistas, with three separate outside seating areas to choose from. Watch the sailboats float by as you lie on the garden bed, or have breakfast on the terrace while waving to a passing paddle-boarder – the river is never far away, and you can even view the shimmering water from your double bed. Trelissick is just a twenty-minute drive away, and Swanpool Beach is a sandy cove half an hour away, beside Swanpool Nature Reserve. After all that exploring, stop at the local inn three doors down for a pint before heading home to play a board game in front of the cosy log burner.

If you like the idea of going eco-friendly for a while but don't want to completely give up on comforts, this cosy barn powered by renewable energy could just be a happy compromise. 

The renovated cob and stone property sits within six acres of idyllic riverside woodland and is built out of natural materials, including oak, lime, cob, pigmented clay plaster and locally sourced slate. Inside, there are a few rustic features, such as the exposed stonework and wood-burning fireplace, but otherwise, it's undeniably contemporary thanks to the conservatory, sleek kitchen and pristine bathrooms. The fact that it's powered by a wind turbine and a heat pump is pretty impressive, too.

Given the peace and tranquillity of the surrounding grounds, you'll be happy to hear that there's a natural swimming pool close to the home — shared only with the host, who lives on the site, and one other barn — as well as a barbecue and some spots for an alfresco feast. 

Although it feels like you're in splendid isolation at this address, you can head back to civilisation pretty swiftly if you wish. The town of Truro takes a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, while Perranporth Beach on the north and south Cornish coastlines can be reached in just under twenty-five.

Song of the Land

Mixing snug and cosy with modern and functional, this smart home is a great choice for couples or small families looking to explore this gorgeous stretch of the South Cornish coast. Out and about, there are shops, cafes and two village pubs a short stroll away. The harbourside and glorious coastal walks are right on your doorstep. Or do some beachcombing – the seashore is 400 metres away. Polruan Castle, on the other hand, is a five-minute stroll. If you want to explore the town of Fowey opposite, the Polruan Ferry takes you across the estuary in under fifteen minutes, or a ten-minute drive will take you to the Bodinnick Car Ferry.

Balancing all the best of a cosy country cottage and a modern, riverside abode, Vesper definitely has the wow factor. Step into the main living area and be blown away by picturesque views of the River Fowey and the town. Thanks to its westward position, you can enjoy plenty of sun on the terrace or watch the ships sail by through the impressive floor-to-ceiling windows in the living room. You’ll also find a wood-burning stove here for colder days when all you want to do is snuggle up with a great book and relax. When you’re ready to step out and explore the area, you’ll be delighted to find yourself just steps from the famous Fowey ‘Hall Walk’, which can be accessed from the garden, and the beautiful South West Coast Path. Both walks are rewarded with spectacular views of the stunning landscape. If you’re feeling hungry or fancy doing some shopping, stroll down to the harbour or catch the ferry to Fowey, where a wide selection of independent shops, cafes and galleries await.

Vesper

Thanks to its elevated and southern facing position, this home benefits from uninterrupted sweeping sea views across the harbour to Readymoney Cove and out to Gribbin Head. 

Cliffbrake welcomes up to eight guests to enjoy this fabulous location, a few metres away from the coastal path to the sandy shores of Lantic Bay – around a thirty-five-minute walk away and an even shorter half a mile stroll to the pub, village shops and ferry port that goes to Fowey. With an abundance of coastal and country walks, we recommend packing comfortable shoes because this area truly is best explored on foot. But we also really wouldn’t blame you if you never wanted to leave this magnificent home. 

After all, the views here are spectacular and made even more picturesque with the boats that sail by. Enjoy these vistas from the terrace while you dine al fresco, or from the sunroom, the dining room and the cosy living area when the weather is being less kind. You needn't worry about missing out on the views from the other rooms of the home, as you'll even get to lap up them up from upstairs in the bedrooms too.

Cliffbrake

Take a seat on the front terrace of this charming cottage and take in the glimpses of the estuary this chic town is famous for. There’s a patio off the garden room too, ideal for reading your holiday book and this place is perfect as an all-year-round getaway as there’s an open fire for those colder months. Just a couple of things to note with this home – firstly, the stairs to the second floor are a bit on the narrow side. Secondly, there’s no parking and the road outside is steep, however, one reserved parking space is provided, a ten-minute walk away. You’ll definitely need to bring your walking shoes.

You’ll fall in love with Fowey for it’s vibrant personality, colourful cottages, waterfront cafes, trinket shops, and plenty of old country pubs. And in a fishing town, fans of seafood must try the local produce. It’s as fresh as it gets!
