Barnard Castle is a historic market town that offers an equally delightful experience for culture and history lovers, as well as catering to outdoorsy types. From this home, art exhibitions at The Bowes Museum are just a sixteen-minute walk, the town’s 12th-century castle is just five, and the incredible hiking spots of the Yorkshire Dales are a half-hour drive. With all this excitement to fill your days, you’ll love coming back to this gorgeous bolthole where you can take refuge on chilly, English evenings. Past the traditional stone exterior of this house, it’s quite a different story indoors. Modern, fresh, and funky, the living space is a surprisingly eclectic mix of velvet furniture, abstract art, patterned wallpaper, and pops of orange features. We love the rocking chair – the perfect perch for sipping Earl Grey after a day of hiking (or perhaps a nip of gin would help you warm up better). After dusk, head upstairs to the bedrooms to get cosy under crushed velvet throws and relax against the cushioned headboard, ready to do it all again tomorrow.

Located close to the banks of the River Tees and just across the water from the eponymous medieval castle ruins, this charming two-bedroom terrace offers a wonderful family escape in the historic market town of Barnard Castle.

Its stylish interior is immediately welcoming and blends contemporary style with original period features to create a modern family home with soul. The dark blue walls and geometric patterned wallpaper in the living room create an exceptionally cosy atmosphere on chilly evenings, with the wood burner casting a warm glow over the space. The sophisticated decor continues in the two individually decorated bedrooms, with a muted grey palette in the main bedroom and bursts of zesty yellow in the twin room.

Exploring the town is easy enough on foot, with The Bowes Museum and the historic ruins of Barnard Castle within a relatively short walk, while the remains of Egglestone Abbey lie a little further downstream. Getting out and about in the nearby countryside is easy, with the spectacular High Force Waterfall approximately half an hour's drive away in the heart of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. From near the house, you’re able to follow walking trails along the river, allowing you to unwind and rejuvenate in the fresh country air. But the home itself also offers plenty of opportunity for peace and quiet. 

Between striking colour choices, plush furniture, captivating art, and an outdoor area that offers sunshine and privacy in equal measure, you can find the space to sit quietly with a cup of coffee, throw your phone aside and enjoy a board game or puzzle, dine together at the beautifully made dining table, and lie in late. A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

As you brace yourself for the salty spray at the end of Saltburn-by-the-Sea’s iconic pier, wouldn’t it be lovely knowing that you’re a ten-minute walk from a comfortable and luxurious home? Wind back through the streets of town, passing quaint cafés and restaurants en route, until you end up at this fabulous apartment. Its grand living room is the perfect place to kick off your walking boots and sink into the plush sofas. With stylish, light-grey walls and original white cornicing on the ceilings, the decor allows some other features to really pop. The bright-green book cabinet beckons you to pick a classic novel. The flame-coloured chandelier invites you to spend a cosy evening under its glow. And you can even light up the elegant fireplace to beat the seaside chill with a whisky in hand. As for the morning, we recommend sitting out with an Earl Grey on your private balcony, before another adventure in the north of England. With Saltburn Station just a three-minute walk, you can explore the country whether or not you’re driving – but it’s also a joy to hike in these rolling hills and moorlands.

Check in to this waterfront cottage in the Lake District, where heritage, design, and uninterrupted views of Talkin Tarn and the Carrock Fells blend seamlessly. Though set deep in the Cumbria countryside, there's nothing twee about the inside of this home. Accents of racing green and antiqued brass bring flow and a dash of luxury throughout the space and guide you upstairs to an exquisite bedroom with a gleaming slipper bath at its heart. Part of an exclusive estate set within 1.5 acres of grounds, you could feel a million miles from anywhere here. But you're not as remote as you may think. The footpath from your door leads to the charming village of Talkin. Grab a shift pint and hearty meal in the village inn, or mosey down to The Boathouse Cafe for lunch al fresco overlooking the tarn. When it's time to embrace the great outdoors, hire a rowing boat, paddleboard, or kayak to launch off the tarn. Tee off from the local golf course - it overlooks the cottages. Then take a stroll around the 1.3-mile tarn through the mature woodland. Or, you could stay tucked up at home and soak up those views from the private patio or beside the fire – it's a scene you'll never tire of.

If you did want to explore the undulating hills of the Yorkshire Dales, they're under half an hour away. You can take a few days to master the hillside or simply just spend an afternoon amidst the sea of green. 

Of course, you don't have to visit them at all – various walking trails decorate the landscape near your home. Simply set out in the mornings to discover the local rural charm.

When you're out in the nearby towns and villages, make sure to stop off for a quick pint at the cosy pubs. You can also find a selection of cute shops and authentic stores selling clothes, food and souvenirs. 

Once you're back at the home, snuggle into its tranquil comfort. Catch a film on the TV, sit out on the garden table with a cup of coffee or just read a book on the rustic bench. Picturesque and peaceful, it's an idyllic spot in the heart of the rural North of England.

Let's Walk By the River

At Ullswater Lake, the second biggest in the Lake District, you’ll find a diverse range of landscapes and activities as you hike around its enormous perimeter. From the quaint village of Pooley Bridge, with traditional pubs and cute restaurants, take a fourteen-minute stroll to reach an altogether different scene – an isolated, romantic boathouse. As you arrive, its stone walls and wooden balcony look gloriously rustic. You could even plan to arrive by boat and pull up to the private jetty. From every angle, the surroundings of this home are striking – leafy trees, the glistening lake, and rolling mountains across the water make this setting feel quite special. Inside, the traditional theme continues with chunky beams and vintage furniture. We love the glossy, lacquered wooden pieces in the lounge, as well as the understated chandelier bringing a romantic glow in the evening. Take a look around while you wait for the wood-burning stove to heat up – the bedroom is quite magnificent. A luxurious cushioned headboard, freestanding copper bathtub, and private balcony set over the water are just a few of the fabulous features. Wrap up in your fluffy bathrobes and settle into lakeside living.

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

Built in 1862, this character-filled home that was once a stable boy's accommodation is now a cosy and atmospheric 21st-century getaway. We love every irresistible inch, from the light-filled skylights and gorgeous sea views down to the glossy parquet floor. The sumptuous master bedroom is so stylish, it's hard to believe it's all upcycled from cladding and roof joists, and the master bathroom is even better. Relax with a soak in the lavish free-standing bathtub or rinse off under the rainfall shower. The living area is warm and incredibly comfortable. In the mornings, open the bi-fold doors and sip your coffee on the Juliet balcony, watching the ocean waves from the floor-to-ceiling windows. After a tasty breakfast rustled up in the blue kitchen, head up to the roof terrace to soak up the sunshine. Decked out with lush greeny and a barbecue, you'll want to spend every minute you're not at the beach sitting up here, enjoying alfresco meals and sipping cocktails as the sun sets over the water. Speaking of the sea, it's just a five-minute walk down to the beach or into town, where you can snack on fish and chips and grab a pint at one of the local pubs. Shopaholics can browse Saltburn-by-the-Sea's independent boutiques, keen hikers can walk along the Cleveland Way or for a more leisurely pace, just stroll along the Victorian pier, relishing in the salty sea air.

One glaring error will hit you the moment you step inside this beautiful cottage – that you haven't booked for long enough. The interior strikes just the right balance between countryside style and more urban chic. So while you'll find a Shaker-style kitchen, a warming wood burner and the welcoming cottage feel, there are plenty of pop art prints, eye-catching tiles and mid-century-style furniture that lends it a more contemporary flair. Upstairs, the three bedrooms are individually decorated, but all are exceptional and luxurious, with pristine white towels and bathrobes provided. That said, only the master comes with an in-room freestanding tub, which certainly elevates it in our eyes. Set in glorious countryside, sandwiched between the North Pennines AONB and Lake District National Park, this home offers fantastic views from its enclosed garden. Topped off with a steaming hot tub, which has plenty of space for six people, it's a truly fabulous place to relax. There are plenty of walks along the trails and footpaths that crisscross the Cumbrian countryside. Circular routes offer a varying degree of challenge depending on preference. Still, the leisurely twenty-five-minute stroll to the Shepherds Inn in Langwathby is our favourite kind of country walk – one with a pub at the end. Despite the feeling of seclusion, you're only four miles from Penrith, so it's easy enough to stock up on essentials when needed.

Hidden Gem is an impressive Victorian property, recently renovated to the highest standard. Sleeping up to ten guests across five bedrooms, this stylish dog-friendly holiday home is a stay to remember. Located in Saltburn-by-the-Sea on the North Yorkshire coast, just 100 metres from the promenade, it offers the perfect retreat for a seaside staycation. This is a home steeped in history. Built in the early 1800s, it was a bank for over 100 years, before becoming an art gallery in the 2010s. The apartment has been beautifully converted to retain its original features which give it so much character. Enjoy your morning coffee while admiring the far-reaching views through the tall, arched windows or curl up with a book on the cosy velvet sofa. It’s also a great home to entertain in, with the large marble dining table taking prime position in the open-plan living space. And of course, the location is fantastic too – within easy reach of Saltburn's shops, great fish restaurants, and beaches of the North Yorkshire coast.

There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

Cycling fans will be happy to find that there's bike storage at the house, and fabulous nearby landscapes that you can explore on two wheels. And, if you fancy a day trip, you can drive to the Victorian spa town of Harrogate in just over an hour.

As soon as you walk in, you'll notice how light and bright it is, with crisp white walls and high ceilings. The luxurious, blue velvet sofa adds a vibrant accent, with mid-century-style furniture and quirky prints complementing the retro vibe. Right in the heart of the town, you’ll have everything you need on your doorstep – pick up goodies for supper from the local deli, or enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants. This walker's paradise is situated on the Cleveland Way National Trail, a great route to explore the rugged North Yorkshire coastline. If a gentle wander is more your thing, roam the many paths winding through flower-filled meadows, or watch the sunset from the beach just eight minutes away.

Sea Thrift

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

Seven minutes by car from Durham city centre, this former rectory plays host to a most luxurious home that feels a world away from urban life. In the rolling fields of County Durham lies a village called Witton Gilbert. At its heart, you’ll find local pubs, shops, and a bowling green, but a five-minute walk will take you up to your vast manor. Enter through majestic,  wrought-iron gates, up your private drive, to the bright blue front door – a cheery invitation to welcome you inside. With modern, velvet furniture in the living space illuminated by enormous bay windows, the gold detailing truly shimmers in the afternoon sun. Pad across the plush carpet to the flagstone floors of the kitchen, where you can rustle up a wholesome Sunday roast on the bottle-green Aga. The dining space has ample room for the whole family, with a rustic table made from huge planks of wood, for a nod to country living. On a balmy summer evening, you might even want to trade the dining table for a picnic on the lawn, followed by a game of tennis on your private court (and a gin and tonic after sunset).

The Ecclesiastic

There's no need for postcards when the views out of the window look better than anything you can find in the local souvenir shop. This converted stone barn is set within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, sandwiched between Rowleth Woods on one side and the River Swale on the other. Inside, you'll find cosy corners, comfy sofas and tranquil bedrooms – all designed to help you relax and unwind. Through the kitchen, there's an enormous range cooker that's sure to please any budding chef, plus elegant stone flooring and a rustic dining table with views to savour. Step out onto the terrace, and you'll soon discover the wooden summer house is the perfect place to unwind with a cool glass of white while the kids play in the garden. If the weather turns, there are plenty of board games and table football to keep everyone entertained. The Lake District and North Pennines are just over an hour's drive away if you fancy exploring further afield. While slightly closer to home, take your tastebuds on a voyage of discovery at the Wensleydale Creamery, just under thirty minutes by car. For cosy pubs, head to nearby Gunnerside, Reeth or Muker for locally sourced, homemade food, crackling fires and a hearty Yorkshire welcome.

An eleven-minute drive to the bustling town of Hexham (or just over thirty minutes to the metropolis of Newcastle), this delightful cottage offers a secluded, rural retreat in the north of England. The setting is postcard-perfect – a white picket fence, traditional iron lamppost, and handmade stone wall surround this cute and cosy home. As you stroll down your paved entrance, you’ll notice your manicured lawn, flowerbed, and dining patio. On a sunny day, it’s the ideal spot for a picnic.
