A converted farm worker's cottage, it's been lovingly updated to create a modern and comfortable stay. As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors.

Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.

This charming townhouse is the perfect base for a coastal retreat. The house is warm and cosy, with a log burner in the living room that’s just dreamy on dreary afternoons. It’s perfectly situated in the centre of Whitby, with beaches and tourist attractions within walking distance. 

After enjoying a hearty family breakfast in the dining room, you might head out to the Blue Flag West Cliff beach to stroll along the sand and admire the colourful beach huts. The townhouse is dog-friendly, so your four-legged friends can join in on the fun. Later on, climb the 199 steps to the Church of Saint Mary, or visit the ruins of Whitby Abbey to see what inspired Bram Stoker. 

Pick up world-class fish and chips to take back to the townhouse, and enjoy them in front of the fire. If your legs are aching from the steps, you might enjoy a glass of wine in the free-standing bathtub – the perfect way to end the day. 


Sea Of Wonders

This picturesque coastal cottage is tucked away in the heart of Whitby, just steps from the renowned Flowergate and an eight-minute walk from the harbour. Blue Flag West Cliff beach and promenade is just a five-minute walk away – on your way home enjoy traditional fish and chips or visit a nostalgic seaside arcade before exploring the famed Whitby Abbey from Stoker’s Dracula, just an eleven-minute walk away. The cottage itself is classically charming, with a sage kitchen, wooden dining table and fireplace. The open living space is sociable and comfortable, providing an inviting atmosphere for conversation and rest after a long day. Fall asleep under exposed wooden beams and wake up to views that stretch over the orange roofs and all the way to the sea. Then eat breakfast all together, or catch a breath of fresh air over a cup of coffee at the communal courtyard tables. Once you feel adequately recharged, set off to explore more of this enchanting coastal town and the beautiful surrounding area.

This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot). 

There's plenty to do in the lands beyond, too, if you'd rather up the ante. The North York Moors national park is just a three-minute drive away (forty minutes on foot).
