Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

As soon as you walk in, you're welcomed by a warm and classically furnished home, with every little detail already thought of. There's an impressive stone fireplace in the open-plan living room, fitted with a log burner for cosy evenings in, no matter the weather outside. On sunny days, open the French doors to the pretty garden and sit outside on the terrace – the sunsets here are amazing. Keen cooks will love the high-spec kitchen, which flows easily into the dining area and living room so everyone can socialise. Each bedroom has a bathroom and we love the master bedroom's view and its lovely freestanding bath. Here you'll be in prime walking country, with hikes from your doorstep. And it's just a ten-minute drive to the market town of Hexham.

As for the morning, we recommend sitting out with an Earl Grey on your private balcony, before another adventure in the north of England. This home in Egton is the perfect compromise between seclusion and a beach holiday. With only six miles separating you from the seaside town of Whitby, you can easily take a quick road trip to spend the day on the sandy shores of West Cliff beach. Whilst there, be sure to walk the promenade for a gorgeous view of the Church of Saint Mary and try your hand at the claw machine in the pier arcade. After a lunch of fresh seafood, head to the Whitby Abbey, a fourteen-minute walk from Whitby Beach, to visit the renowned ruins that inspired Bram Stoker’s gothic novel Dracula.

Back home, take in the tranquillity of the secluded escape by sitting out on the deck with a cup of coffee. Watch the breeze play through the line of trees surrounding you as you catch up on your favourite podcast. We recommend, at least once, sitting out here to watch the sun rise or set, maybe even both. Inside, get the cacao ready for movie night in front of the fire, and when you’re ready for bed, swing by the bathroom first for a soak in the tub.

This converted chapel school sits in the beautiful rolling hills of the North York Moors and behind the well-preserved exterior lies a truly unique home. Large arched windows let in copious amounts of natural light, which is emphasised by the high ceiling and walls finished in a cleansing shade of white. An abundance of velvet textures and the slick kitchen surfaces feel particularly en vogue, too. Out in the large and enclosed garden, there's a picturesque terrace for those warm summer nights when you want to dine alfresco and a view of the countryside that stretches to the sea. Draw the curtains to let the light stream in and spend a lazy morning in bed with coffee and a crossword puzzle before finally dragging yourselves out of bed and into the kitchen for breakfast. Head out from there on a romantic walk through town and toward the promenade.

If you want to stick closer to home, the estate’s grand hotel has an exceptional restaurant, a five-minute stroll away. Inside the cottage, you’ll find a striking sage-green living room that feels distinctly modern, despite the idyllic facade. It continues into the surprisingly spacious kitchen where you’ll find everything you need for self-catering. Out the back, you’ve got your own little patio for an alfresco tipple in the summer breeze to the sound of a babbling stream.

Over 170 years old, this cottage awaits in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. While the scenic countryside abounds, Hawes puts market-town amenities on your doorstep. There's a small seating area on the patio for a sunset tipple, but we especially love the cosy interior. You'll receive a free bundle of logs for the fire, too. But remember to mind your head on the low beams. What's more, pets are welcome to stay, though they can't jump on the furniture or leave pawprints upstairs.
