Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Saltburn's shops, restaurants and bars are all within walking distance, while this home also makes a great base to explore the surrounding countryside – the Yorkshire Moors are only a thirty–minute drive away.

This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot). 

There's plenty to do in the lands beyond, too, if you'd rather up the ante. The North York Moors national park is just a three-minute drive away (forty minutes on foot). 

And when thoughts turn to food, there are some delightful pubs just moments away. And a charming tearoom for your fix of Yorkshire Fat Rascals is dangerously close - it's just below your door.

Pat-a-Cake

This converted chapel school sits in the beautiful rolling hills of the North York Moors and behind the well-preserved exterior lies a truly unique home. Large arched windows let in copious amounts of natural light, which is emphasised by the high ceiling and walls finished in a cleansing shade of white. An abundance of velvet textures and the slick kitchen surfaces feel particularly en vogue, too. There are countless walks to embark on in the surrounding Moors, too.

The Chapel of Dunsley

Although this wooden lodge sits in the middle of a leafy caravan park in the North Yorkshire countryside just outside of Whitby, there's nothing temporary or makeshift about the living quarters. In fact, there's a contemporary style and enough high-quality amenities that would see it slot quite easily into the swishest of city neighbourhoods.

The double-height windows in the living room do a brilliant job of bathing the interior in natural light, as well as offering peaceful views of the surrounding trees. If you're paying a visit during the warmer months – or you just want to emulate the hardiness of local Yorkshire folk during the colder seasons – you can make the most of the home's private terrace complete with seating. There are also plenty of walking routes and historic attractions in the surrounding North Yorks Moors National Parks, as well as the village of Egton and its pub lying within walking distance. The quirky seaside town of Whitby takes less than a quarter of an hour to reach in the car, too.

It doesn’t get much more bucolic than this charming stone cottage near Sandsend beach. Set within acres and acres of private estate, you’ll find this country bolthole in a row of terracotta-roofed cottages dappled with ivy. Towering trees and manicured gardens surround the spot for a bit of away-from-it-all feeling. Yet, a fifteen-minute walk sees you at Sandsend beach where a coastal stroll has you in the centre of Whitby in forty minutes (subject to tides). Here you’ll find myriad seafood restaurants, traditional fish and chip shops and beachside (and literary) attractions. If you want to stick closer to home, the estate’s grand hotel has an exceptional restaurant, a five-minute stroll away. Inside the cottage, you’ll find a striking sage-green living room that feels distinctly modern, despite the idyllic facade. It continues into the surprisingly spacious kitchen where you’ll find everything you need for self-catering. Out the back, you’ve got your own little patio for an alfresco tipple in the summer breeze to the sound of a babbling stream.

Just a mile from the beautiful sandy and shingle shores of Marske Beach, this newly built holiday home is perfectly positioned to explore this picturesque stretch of the North Sea coast.

The majority of the individually decorated rooms include an eye-catching feature wall, adding a splash of colour and a playful atmosphere to the home, while the enclosed garden is perfect for outdoor dinners and playtime with four-legged friends and energetic children. 

You'll hear the occasional cheer from the terraces of the nearby football club. Still, its family-friendly atmosphere on match days makes it an ideal candidate for a first football match, with little worry about the outlay when your children inevitably grow bored around fifteen minutes in. 

After catching a snippet of the game, enjoy an afternoon stroll southwards along the dramatic coast towards the historic seaside spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea with its iconic cast iron pier stretching 208 metres out to sea and its Grade II-listed cliff lift.

After a busy day exploring the local area – and trust us, there's plenty to see – come back to a cosy, peaceful homestead that's bursting with character. Beamed ceilings, original stone stairs and a traditional hearth are just a few of the features we love. If you're in the mood to rustle up dinner, the kitchen has everything you'll need, and thanks to the DVD player and smart TV, rainy days can be spent watching your favourite films. When the chill sets in, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove or plop down in the window seat and admire the views. Better yet, take in the sprawling Swaledale scenery from the summerhouse – you'll never get tired of watching the sunsets over the dales, glass of wine in hand.

The Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea makes for an excellent seaside escape. It’s a real coastal retreat, surrounded by charming seaside towns and villages – you can use Saltburn as your base for exploring the area. 

This charming apartment is ideal for romantic getaways, and equally well suited to solo stays by the sea. We love the traditional beams and cosy, homey vibe. You’ll feel at home the instant you arrive at this stylish abode. Best of all, the apartment boasts sea views. Wake up each morning to see the sea rushing ashore. Step out onto the balcony to sip your morning coffee, and breathe in the sea air. The blue-tiled kitchen is a lovely spot for your meals, whether you’ve whipped up a cooked breakfast or are unwrapping fish and chips for your evening meal. 

It’s just a short walk down to the beach, where you can build sandcastles, skim stones, or even try out the surf. Saltburn is also home to the UK’s oldest functioning cliff lift – enjoy the ride down to the promenade. Later on, stroll along the 208-metre-long pier with an ice cream – we do love to be beside the sea. 


Beach Blues

Barnard Castle is a historic market town that offers an equally delightful experience for culture and history lovers, as well as catering to outdoorsy types. From this home, art exhibitions at The Bowes Museum are just a sixteen-minute walk, the town’s 12th-century castle is just five, and the incredible hiking spots of the Yorkshire Dales are a half-hour drive. With all this excitement to fill your days, you’ll love coming back to this gorgeous bolthole where you can take refuge on chilly, English evenings. Past the traditional stone exterior of this house, it’s quite a different story indoors. Modern, fresh, and funky, the living space is a surprisingly eclectic mix of velvet furniture, abstract art, patterned wallpaper, and pops of orange features. We love the rocking chair – the perfect perch for sipping Earl Grey after a day of hiking (or perhaps a nip of gin would help you warm up better). After dusk, head upstairs to the bedrooms to get cosy under crushed velvet throws and relax against the cushioned headboard, ready to do it all again tomorrow.

In the heart of Pickering, this stone charmer is just a six-minute walk from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Inside, wooden beams and ornamental fireplaces reflect the home's 200-year-old history, while two cosy lounges – including one with a log burner – provide plenty of space to sprawl out. We're especially fond of the rear garden, which is a sweet spot to enjoy a morning brew or an alfresco G&T. A huge perk is that this pad is pet-friendly, welcoming one well-behaved dog to join in on the fun. Despite the plain bedrooms and basic bathrooms, overall, we think it's a good option for families keen to explore North Yorkshire.

We love the bold use of purple – from the plush sofa to the tasteful TV wall – while the small wooden dining table is perfect for meals together. You’ll probably want to head down to the beach too – Sandsend Sands is just a fifteen-minute walk from home. Spend the rest of your time exploring the nearby Whitby and its literary history, beautiful coast and delicious fish and chips.
