There’s a real romance to this stone cottage. A former byre, it’s stood on this land for 500 years and you can feel the history the moment you walk through the door. The owners have kept the layout much as it was when it was built, with the galleried bedroom created out of the former storage area that overlooked the byre. With thick walls of pink granite and lofty ceilings, it makes a dreamy bolthole for two or a young family. The location is hiking heaven, with the wonders of the Lake District on your doorstep. Days can be spent roaming some of the UK’s most dazzling scenery – much of which can be accessed on foot from the cottage. In the evenings, we can picture you sitting in the grassy paddock with a glass of something bubbly, looking out over the fells as the stars come out to play.

This converted barn is a hiker’s dream because, while it's nothing flashy, it's within waking distance of England's highest mountain, Scafell Pike. But not just that. You can also hike over to Wast Water, the most dramatic and deepest of the area's lakes, and to a number of stunning waterfalls. 

The home is the perfect place to relax after a full day of walking and exploring, with a cosy vibe, ancient wooden beams, and simple furnishings. There's even an original spy hole to be discovered upstairs. 

Kickstart your evening with a long bath before relaxing in the garden with a well-deserved beer or two. When the summer sun shines on the verdant garden, it's an idyllic place to watch the world peacefully go by. We loved the romance of sunset whilst the sky gradually turned to a gorgeous red.

The sleepy retreat is set in the village of Boot, a quaint collection of cobbled streets and sweet shops. There are a couple of nice pubs to try out too, and supplies can be picked up in Eskdale, a five-minute drive away. 



Scafell Cottage

Tucked away in the Eskdale valley, this cosy cottage has the best of the Lake District at its feet. Inside, the wooden beams, brick walls and homespun furnishings have a lasting effect. It’s a warming and tranquil place, with sofas for curling up on when it’s pouring rain and a baby grand piano for sing-songs after a glass or two of wine. You’ll find plenty of modern touches, too – the brand new kitchen makes cooking a doddle and the recently installed bathtub is a treat for ramblers’ aching muscles. Outside, a sprawling lawn complete with dining set is ideal for barbecues in the sunshine. And once you’ve filled up on Cumbrian sausages and sticky Grasmere gingerbread, follow the higgledy-piggledy dry stone walls through wild countryside to the enchanting Stanley Ghyll Waterfall or jump in the car and take the scenic twenty-five-minute drive to Wast Water, England’s deepest lake. Before you make your way home to collapse into ridiculously comfortable beds, stop off at The Boot Inn for a well-deserved drink – it’s only a minute from your doorstep.

Seek out this traditional stone cottage in the heart of the Lake District National Park. Even though the home itself is 500 years old, it’s full of modern luxuries such as a brand-new country style kitchen and beautiful marble bathroom. These are offset nicely against the traditional features of exposed brick walls and original wooden beams. Located in a place of superlatives, not only is it within walking distance to England’s highest mountain, but also its deepest lake, steepest road, and the oldest working watermill. Before setting out to discover all of these delights, why not start the day with an invigorating dip in Stanley Ghyll waterfall, a twenty-minute drive away. After a day of exploring, get cosy in the snug as you make the most of the full Sky television package. You can even stream your favourite shows seamlessly through fibre-optic broadband. Personally, we prefer to just switch off from it all in the secret walled garden with sublime views over the fells. When night falls, cosy up in the warmth of the cottage and watch the stars come alive through the skylight windows.

This Lake District’s bolthole is all about the romance. The Romantic poets (including Wordsworth and Coleridge) did wax lyrical about this part of the UK, after all. And we think this 500-year-old stone cottage sitting in the shadow of Scafell Pike is an ideal retreat. It is delightfully cosy, with wooden beams and exposed stonework adding character and warmth. Outside, a riverside paddock is enclosed by those old stone walls the Lake District is famous for, and you can brunch at the picnic table overlooked by the fells. The large roll-top bath is perfect to soak your aching muscles, and the rustic charm of the bedroom especially welcoming after a day of mountain climbing. There are two pubs within walking distance and nothing but untamed country walks just beyond that.

Overlooking the clear waters of a deep lake that's famous for its scuba diving and open water swimming, this charming home is a real find. Built on the edge of the former quarry, it's one of only a handful of lodge-style homes in this exclusive spot. It's bound to appeal to lovers of the great outdoors, with walking and cycling routes nearby, and it's just a stone's throw from the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. It's set in a private lane, and while we love the stylish, modern interiors, we couldn't get enough of the lake views from the terrace. With a private hot tub to sink into and a fire pit, it's the perfect spot as the sun sets. Inside, there's a contemporary fireplace and a huge TV, so getting cosy shouldn't be a problem, and we love the sociable, open-plan layout. You can cook in the fabulous kitchen and eat at the dining table – perhaps with the bi-fold doors open. Here you'll be just a twenty-five-minute drive from Lancaster and Morecombe, with the little village of Over Kellet just down the road. It's just fifteen minutes by car to the vast beaches of nearby Morecombe Bay.

When a home is surrounded by beautiful scenery, the interior really has to up its game in order to stand a chance of being noticed and thankfully that's the case with this address. Large floor-to-ceiling windows let in ample amounts of natural daylight, which dances pleasingly off the wooden floors. Added to that, we liked the kitchen finished in a fetching shade of purple, the cosy wood-burning stove in the living room and the smart-looking bathrooms. Combined all together, it's almost enough to distract you from the stunning view of Lake Ullswater watched over by undulating hilltops. When you're in the mood to swoon, there's a terrace complete with alfresco seating so you can dine with this sweeping panorama in front of your eyes. The property itself sits on the Ullswater Way — a walking route that goes around the water — and you can easily reach other natural landmarks on foot. Aira Force waterfall, for instance, takes just over an hour and a half.

You can’t come to the Lake District without exploring the area – so have a stroll around Bowness-on-Windermere’s streets filled with boutiques, cafes, and pubs. Or go for a boat trip on Lake Windermere, less than 200 metres away.

Set in the Lake District, this home has been featured on the TV show Extraordinary Escapes, and we can see why. Situated on the shores of Lake Windermere, it has wonderful views and an acre of garden, as well as several balconies. There’s a terrace for dining and relaxing, as well as a jetty where you can moor a boat or kayak. The interior of this home is impressive too with its designer furniture and ski lodge feel. A home cinema and a games room with a bespoke 8-foot pool table will keep everyone entertained. And all the bedrooms have floor-to-ceiling windows – two also have oval baths overlooking the lake. This place has been designed with total luxury in mind.

Lakeland Retreat

Out in the heart of the Cumbrian countryside, this cosy cottage sits right between the Lake District National Park, the Yorkshire Dales and the North Pennines AONB. It’s safe to say there’s no shortage of walking trails over fields and fells, hills and heather-clad dales. It’s a twenty-minute walk (or four-minute drive) to the village of Langwathby with its train station, village shop and handful of pubs and a coffee shop. Further afield, you’ll find plenty to see and do in Penrith, a ten-minute drive away. A classic rose-stone exterior greets you on arrival, but it’s the inside of this home that really impresses. Walls of reclaimed wood, exposed stonework and a vaulted ceiling in the living room are simply stunning. There’s a wood-burner to keep things cosy and each piece of furniture – headboards made from old pallets, a striking faux-bird lampshade and old bronze keys in the doors – feels handpicked. If the glorious free-standing slipper tub in the master bedroom doesn’t invite you for a dip, perhaps the wood-clad hot tub outside can sooth sore feet after a day in the hills. There’s nothing but the bubbles, the lawn, fields and the lake in the distance out here.   

Lakeland Rest

There aren’t many places that really embrace the away-from-it-all feel of the deepest darkest Lake District, and this one is housed on an estate once owned by the son of William Wordsworth. Fields fringed by drystone walls and hillsides dotted with sheep are home to walking and cycling trails right from your doorstep. The River Rothay flows right past the garden where fairytale-esque stepping stones connect you to the other side of the bank. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. At sundown, there’s no better place than the furnished patio for a tipple or two as the sky streaks orange and pink. 

Viewpoint

Less than 500 metres from the shores of Lake Windermere, you’ll find this five-star barn conversion, set behind electric gates. Also, the vibrant village of Bowness is around 250 metres away, with its array of shops, tourist attractions, bars and restaurants. Or you could simply relax in the large courtyard which overlooks woodland with its sofas and outdoor fireplace. The stylish lounge has the all-important log-burning stove too, so it’s a great place for all the family or friends to chill out – this place is designed for relaxation.

Lakeland Haven

From this spot on the western edge of Windermere, you'll be able to enjoy the whole of the Graythwaite Estate – covering 5000 lakeside acres. Spend your days walking the many trails, soaking up the natural landscape, or pop along to the estate's on-site activity centre, where you can book anything from paddleboarding to a 4X4 adventure. And for lunch, head to the nearby villages of Hawkshead, Near Sawrey and Far Sawrey – all bursting with eateries and attractions – or take the ferry across to Bowness. Back at home, relax in the bright and homely living space, with modern grey and white furnishings and a cosy log burner for warming the toes in the chilly winter months. To make the most of the lake views, you'll find the accommodation is upside down, with the bedrooms on the ground floor. And, if you're lucky with the weather, you'll have your own terrace with stunning views across the water. Imagine sitting out there, cradling a hard-earned cup of tea after a long walk. And for added luxury, book a slot at the estate's indoor swimming pool.


The Grassholme

Some of the Lake District’s most striking scenery can be found at Ullswater, with its mountainous landscape and unusual z-shaped, ‘ribbon lake’, which is the second largest in the region. But even better than simply visiting this beautiful spot, you can see it all from the windows of this lakeside home. Although it’s just a five-minute drive from the quaint town of Pooley Bridge, this home feels truly rural and isolated. Park up the 4x4 in the gravel drive and head into this warm and welcoming abode. Light up the wood-burning stove in the plush lounge, with its horseshoe sofa that can fit the entire family. Or you can even have your own private hideaway in the second sitting room, with yet another fireplace – this time a sleek, modern hearth set into the wall. For balmy English evenings, another space can be found outdoors, with your very own patio complete with comfy garden furniture. Alfresco drinking and dining will certainly be on the cards out here. While you can see the water from the comfort of your own home, it’s just a seven-minute walk down to Ullswater Marina.

The Ribbon Lake

Nestled amongst the east wing of a sprawling estate, this maisonette has plenty of room for families. Cosy and inviting with wooden beams and angled ceilings, this home is sure to give you that warm and fuzzy feeling when you arrive. Snuggle up on the Chesterfield sofas in front of the electric fire while your favourite movie plays on the DVD player. Rustle up delicious meals in the stylish kitchen, then gather around the dining table for family feasts, sharing stories and bottles of bubbly straight out of the wine fridge. All the bedrooms are roomy and traditionally styled, and with private en-suites, nobody will have to queue for the loo. But our favourite spot is the garden. After an alfresco lunch in the courtyard, wander the several acres of grounds and woodlands. The views are absolutely stunning – they stretch towards River Eden and to the Castle Carrock Fells, promising you a slice of that peaceful rural life. Keen cyclists can roam the country lanes by bike or just stroll along the river – viaduct towers, hidden caves and waterfalls are just a few things you'll discover. When your stomach starts rumbling, walk ten minutes into town for local ales and mouth-watering fare at the village pub. Both Carlisle and the Lake District are easily reached by car if you fancy a day out, though we're quite happy to while away our afternoons in Wetheral, exploring the countryside.

From Fells

This detached barn conversion is located in a quiet hamlet and offers panoramic views over the Cumbrian countryside. Outside, there’s a decked area for lunches in the sunshine and an enclosed garden for four-legged friends. Inside, the living area is kept warm with a wood-burning stove. If we had to be picky, we’d say the bathroom could do with a refresh, though it functions fine. The Cambrian Way passes by the front of the home, making the place ideal for walkers. Plus, the bustling market town of Ulverston, which holds a twice-weekly market, is a ten-minute drive away.

Chestnut Barn

Located on a quiet residential street less than a ten-minute walk from the bustling town of Ambleside, this home is the perfect getaway for exploring the natural beauty of the Lake District. Fresh and recently fully refurbished, this delightful, contemporary space is full of thoughtful details that make it sing with style. From its colourful artwork and lighting fixtures to the honeycomb kitchen tiles and Harris tweed furniture, there’s a touch of funky charm to its otherwise sleek design. Upstairs, vintage-inspired wood furniture mixes with blue and mustard features to create a warm and peaceful bedroom that feels like a cosy cocoon that will be most welcome after a day of adventures. Ideal for a couple looking for a clean and modern retreat that’s well-equipped for a range of activities, this home maximises its space and includes a stylish tiled entrance to store your walking gear and a snug little study nook in the bedroom if you need to catch up on any last-minute emails or map out your next hiking route. After a day out exploring Ambleside, the National Park or the top of Lake Windermere, it's the perfect space to come home to for a comforting meal and a relaxing rinse under the rainfall shower before snuggling up for a restful night’s sleep.

Counting Sheep

With jaw-dropping views over Lake Ullswater and a private shoreline and jetty, it's clear what caught our eye about this 1900s gatehouse. There's an alfresco terrace to soak in the lakeside views with barbecues. But should the weather turn, the vistas are just as impressive curled up beside the wood-burning stoves indoors, and the games room will keep little ones busy. Set in the sleepy hamlet of Watermillock, besides two traditional pubs and a watersports centre, little else is within walking distance. However, the village of Pooley Bridge, with a cluster of shops and restaurants, is just a 3-mile drive.

The Lake Gatehouse

Hopping over the babbling beck to reach the hidden gardens of this cute-as-a-button period cottage, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd fallen head first into the pages of a Beatrix Potter classic. And that's all part of the charms of this riverside home, set just a few minutes walk from the pretty centre of Windermere village and a smidge further to bustling Bowness and Lake Windermere (a twenty-minute stroll). 

Inside, the cottage has been carefully and stylishly reimagined for elegant, modern living while retaining that all-important historic character. Spread out over three floors, it's deceptively spacious, too, despite its chocolate-box exterior. Upstairs, you'll find four bedrooms, each as beautiful as the next, with exposed beams, sloping roofs, and decorative fireplaces just like you imagined. While downstairs, you can spill out into the immaculate open-plan living and dining area with storybook armchairs crying out for an afternoon dose. 

But when the sun shines, it's outside in that glorious hidden garden where you'll want to be. Hop over the itsy-bitsy humpback bridge (game of poohsticks, anyone?) to soak up the sun from the sloping lawns or gather round for drinks on the riverside decking – it's your very own little oasis in the heart of Windemere.
