The River Rothay flows right past the garden where fairytale-esque stepping stones connect you to the other side of the bank. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. The views over Grasmere Lake, and to the fells beyond from this sympathetically converted stone barn’s designated patio are breathtaking. Enjoy them from the picnic bench with a glass of wine – we didn’t want to leave this spot. Heading back through the barn doors reveals a spacious open plan living space with characterful beams and plenty of roof lights flood this charming space with light. Choose a book from the cute nook and relax on the comfy sofa. This place is the perfect Cumbrian retreat for a family or friends.

The village of Grasmere is just over one mile away, where you’ll find Dove Cottage, the National Trust's Allan Bank and other attractions to enjoy. Practical amenities in Grasmere include a local shop, pharmacy, post office and a choice of eateries and pubs

For a home in a market town this quaint, inside the twin-level apartment feels surprisingly contemporary. Dazzling white from top to toe, with modern textiles adding a pop of colour, this place is anything but twee. Each vast bedroom spread out across the two floors is as pristine as the next and offer up impressive views of the higgledy-piggledy slate rooftops and craggy hilltops beyond. 

But the clincher here has to that vaulted ceiling living space on the second floor. Mighty exposed beams add the wow-factor and large skylights flood the room with natural daylight. With such vast space, it’s no surprise this apartment was historically the former gallery space of the Heaton Cooper family of artists. 

When you’re ready to soak up the gentle hustle and bustle of Ambleside, you won’t have far to go. Take your pick from the many bars, restaurants, and shops, including the beloved local landmark, Zeffirellis, for its lip-smacking pizza and pasta – all just a three-minute stroll away.

We love the colour palette, which blends soft blues with sunshine yellow. The kitchen tiles light up the open-plan living space and create the perfect cooking space. You can make the most of the Neff appliances by whipping up an evening feast. This home is located above a chocolate shop so expect to get the occasional whiff of sweetness (and constant cravings!). Luckily the host provides complimentary chocolates for you to pocket as you head into the Lake District for a day of hiking.

With exclusive lake access, grab your paddleboards or kayaks and take to the lake. Prefer to hike? Trails are abundant locally, including the Grasmere and Rydal Water circuit. And after a fun-filled day outdoors, we recommend a short stroll into Grasmere, where restaurants, bars and tea rooms await.

Embrace the countryside charm of Ambleside from this traditional cottage. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, pubs, and shops within easy walking distance – perfect for families with young children. The little ones will also love the two parks with play areas that are just a few yards away. There’s even a path outside the rear gate leading straight to one of them. While this is convenient, bear in mind that this is a communal path and there’ll be people walking past the back gate throughout the day. But while you’re inside the cottage, you’ll be able to switch off from the outside world – there's a fireplace for ultimate cosiness, as well as plush sitting areas. From here, you can hike the Old Man of Coniston, one of the most striking peaks in the Lakes, and explore the Coniston Fells. The apartment is ideal for couples and families, with everything you might need for a cosy break. We love the views from the living room, and the sleek open-plan kitchen and dining space.

Warm and inviting, this home is perfect for families and groups of friends. It’s located just outside of Windermere, a mere ten-minute walk from the shops, restaurants, and pubs. There are plenty of parks to explore, in addition to the lake – will you hike around it or enjoy a spot of boating? The home itself is cosy and comfortable, with a log burner for chilly weather and an attractive patio garden for warmer days.

Windermere Waters

Step back in time with a stay in this Victorian manor. Set on a private estate, with surrounding countryside views, it’s the picture of a countryside escape. When you can pull yourself away from the scenery, there’s also a cinema and games room. There’s plenty of space to spread out, including a snug, dining area, and living area. The living space is a little dated, but we think it adds to the traditional charm. Being a Victorian home, expect some low ceilings and uneven floors. The garden is on multiple levels, too, but it’s a great spot for the children to run around. Just keep an eye on them around the woodlands – there are a few fallen trees. 

The Grazier

Hopping over the babbling beck to reach the hidden gardens of this cute-as-a-button period cottage, you'd be forgiven for thinking you'd fallen head first into the pages of a Beatrix Potter classic. And that's all part of the charms of this riverside home, set just a few minutes walk from the pretty centre of Windermere village and a smidge further to bustling Bowness and Lake Windermere (a twenty-minute stroll). 

Inside, the cottage has been carefully and stylishly reimagined for elegant, modern living while retaining that all-important historic character. Spread out over three floors, it's deceptively spacious, too, despite its chocolate-box exterior. Upstairs, you'll find four bedrooms, each as beautiful as the next, with exposed beams, sloping roofs, and decorative fireplaces just like you imagined. While downstairs, you can spill out into the immaculate open-plan living and dining area with storybook armchairs crying out for an afternoon dose. 

But when the sun shines, it's outside in that glorious hidden garden where you'll want to be. Hop over the itsy-bitsy humpback bridge (game of poohsticks, anyone?) to soak up the sun from the sloping lawns or gather round for drinks on the riverside decking – it's your very own little oasis in the heart of Windemere.

The Babbling Beck

This warm and inviting home is in the grounds of the old vicarage estate, having originally been the stables. It’s nestled in the heart of the Lake District, between Lake Windermere and Esthwaite. The home boasts beautiful views down the valley towards Sawrey, Grizedale Forest, and the Old Man of Coniston. It’s just a short walk from Hill Top, Beatrix Potter’s home, and is surrounded by a wild meadow planted with fruit and nut tree orchards – this is certainly a picturesque spot for a romantic escape. We love the freestanding bathtub and the wood-burning stove of this comfortable, cosy home-from-home.

Walking in the Rain

This contemporary home is a quiet and cosy base in the Lake District. It’s less than a three-minute walk from the shops and restaurants of Windermere Village, and there are excellent walking routes straight from the doorstep. From here, you can easily explore the Lakeland Fells and take in the beauty of the Lakes. There’s a petite patio at the front of the home, where you can sip your morning cuppa as you plan your day.

It's easy to forget you're in North West England from this stunning home in Bowness-on-Windermere, as its modern mid-century interiors look straight out of '70s Hollywood.
