This charming home is in the Falls development in old Ambleside, just a five-minute walk from Ambleside yet in a remarkably peaceful setting. The home overlooks the Stockghyll Gorge, so the sound of water cascading down the rocks becomes the soundtrack to your stay – there are two terraces to enjoy this from, one of which has a barbecue. There are many delightful walks that you can set off on straight from the front door, so you won’t need to use your car much after your arrival. We love this home and think you will too. 

Kingfisher Blue

Lying within a large estate on the western side of Lake Windermere, this mighty country pile is a superb option for a big party travelling to the Lake District.

Like many properties in the local area, there's a real sense of heritage and time-honoured homeliness in the interior, as seen with the wooden ceiling beams, grand dining room and lavish living area complete with a wood-burning fireplace and walls full of historic artwork.

That being said, it would be unfair to say that the home is stuck in the past. Contemporary features abound if you look closely enough, whether in the sleek bathrooms and equally smart kitchens or in the stylishly appointed bedrooms.

When the weather's playing ball, there's a garden and patio area for making the most of sunny spells, and there's also a communal swimming pool on the estate for which guests can book a slot. If you're feeling hardy, you can swim in Lake Windermere, which can be reached in around five minutes on foot. There's also a company on the estate that can organise watersports, as well as other outdoor excursions.

When it's time to explore, there are so many walks in the area you'll be itching to get out. Or nip over to the historical Hawkshead, home to many adored restaurants and pubs – it's just a ten-minute drive away.

Back at home, behind the traditional Cumbrian stone walls, this period home offers pure modern luxury. The made-for-action kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up a feast (we're talking two ovens, two microwaves, and a welcome hamper stuffed with goodies). And there's room for you all to spill out at that vast dining table overlooking the lake. Or, on warmer evenings, take your meals outside on the terrace – the barbecue, firepit, and hot tub will keep the night flowing.

Mornings here are particularly lovely. Your super comfy bed will be hard to get out of, but the sunshine peeking in through the curtains will encourage you to get up. Enjoy a fresh coffee out on the patio, listening to the chirps of the birds and feeling the warm morning sun on your face. The early sunlight floods in through the patio doors, so even if it isn't quite warm enough to sit outside, your mornings will be blissful. 

If you love the great outdoors, there are few places to enjoy its wildness and beauty than the Lake District. There are countless walking and cycling trails, and you're just five minutes from the shores of Lake Windermere. There's storage here if you'd like to bring your own bikes, or there's a place to hire them just a ten-minute drive away. Luckily, you're just a ten-minute from your local pub in the quiet village of Backbarrow.

Wild Fell

This charming home is a splendid base for exploring the Lake District National Park. It’s tucked away in a peaceful valley so you can really unwind, but it’s just a twelve-minute drive from Kendal and fifteen minutes from Windermere. Following the riverside walk, you’ll end up in the pretty village of Ambleside in twenty minutes where shops and cafés abound and watersports on Lake Windermere are on offer. The home itself is an eco getaway, housed in a circular stone building designed to blend into the fells behind it. Make the most of countryside views from the terrace and floor-to-ceiling windows. The open living room, kitchen and dining room is flooded with light during the day and the high-spec kitchen is a cook’s dream. Plus, there’s underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cosy warm. At sundown, there’s no better place than the furnished patio for a tipple or two as the sky streaks orange and pink.

This charming cottage is a perfect base in beautiful Ambleside. It’s a cosy home for four, ideal for a family or two couples. We love the log burner, which you can curl up beside after spending the day exploring the Great Outdoors – you can set off on excellent hikes right from the front door. There’s also a patio garden, a splendid spot for a glass of wine or a morning cuppa. There are plenty of shops, restaurants, and bars nearby, and Lake Windermere is a short stroll away. 

Ambleside Cottage

Village life is on your doorstep at this pet-friendly apartment in pretty Backbarrow. Set on the second and third floors of a modern apartment building, while there’s no garden to speak of, the snug balcony with river views is a lovely touch. An excellent option for families looking to explore the Lake District, take your pick from the countless walking and cycling routes nearby. Or hop in the car to Lake Windermere (two miles) or Coniston Water (ten miles) – getting out and about is a cinch with two off-road parking spaces. But if the weather doesn’t buck up, there are board games, a Playstation and Netflix here to amuse the kids (and the young at heart).
