We recommend watching at least one sunrise from the garden chair as you nurse your first coffee of the day.

After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. Save for the exposed beams, brickwork, and basic structure, this home’s undergone a complete makeover that’s turned it into a very hospitable, little home. We, of course, love historic touches and found that the ones present here add a bucketload of charm to this home, and the choice of furnishings only further serves to make this space comfortable and inviting. Sink into the plush velvet sofa – by the way, we think the blue around the house brings a brilliant luxe contrast to the space – with the fire crackling at your feet as you catch up on your reading. 

Reading that can also be done outside when the weather is just right. Head out with a cup of coffee and embrace the peace and quiet, enjoying the view of the cathedral when you’ve put your book down for a quick break. 

Back inside, the kitchen – which features a beautiful aga cooker – connects to a dining room by the way of a conservatory, which makes even cooking a social affair as some guests can get breakfast ready whilst others bask in the light streaming in from up above. 

As if this home could get much better, it’s also very close to the famous Peak District National Park and a day out there, admiring the lakes and moors as you hike the round hills, is an absolute must. Situated within a Peak District estate, this 16th-century hunting tower was built for Bess of Hardwick, the ancestress of the Duke of Devonshire. This four-storey tower isn’t suitable for young children or guests with limited mobility – you’ll need to ascend the steep and winding staircase to reach all areas of this abode. Expect traditional features, with an AGA for cooking family favourites after a day exploring Chatsworth House. You’ll find a health club on the estate too, so speak to your host to arrange a spa session. After a few tennis games on the communal courts, unwind with a glass of red in the cosy sitting room. For local hikes, Curbar Edge and Froggatt Edge are a​​ fifteen-minute drive away.  

To the Tower

Dating back to the 19th century, this barn in the White Peak area of the Peak District has ben given a new lease of life in recent years. No longer used for farmyard storage, it's now a country getaway full of luxurious touches.

Save for the sections of exposed stonework, you wouldn't be able to guess this home's true age. The design is contemporary but definitely rustic in flavour, with bare floorboards, artfully weathered wooden furnishings and a Scandinavian-style wood-burning stove that's the ideal companion to return to after a long bout in the great outdoors.
