Fancy a romantic getaway with a twist? This upside-down home places a firelit living area above the bedroom, where the en-suite bathtub enjoys a framed view of the creek. Upstairs, we think the waterside terrace might inspire a paddle to Salcombe – made easy by the three-seater kayak your host provides. It's worth noting that there is a bit of a hike to the front door here (thirty-six steps, to be precise), so this home won't be the best option for everyone.

This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. Curl up on the sofa to watch a family film and even make it cosier with the wood-burning stove, which can be lit for additional warmth or roasting marshmallows. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. As well as the modern log burner in the sitting room, there's the private garden beside the river, the high-spec kitchen, glamorous bathrooms and comfy beds. As with any aristocratic country retreat, you’re surrounded by sprawling gardens and grounds, where furnished patios overlook the rolling hill of the national park and even a private hot tub for an evening soak under the stars. Explore the woodlands to discover a wellness walk. If you love the thought of drifting to sleep while gazing up at the stars, this dreamy cabin could be the holiday home for you. The cabin is tucked away in a lush garden in a romantic setting that will make you instantly forget any of the worries of day-to-day life. It’s a studio-style cabin with one wall entirely made of glass, blending the interior and exterior. A skylight above the bed means you’ll go to sleep each night staring straight up at the stars. 

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace. Perhaps you’ll cook dinner on the barbecue before enjoying a relaxing bubble bath in the beautiful copper tub. Or to take the romance to the next level, you might soak in the hot tub under the stars. Step inside this recently modernised Victorian home that's set on one of Kingswear’s most sought-after roads, in the very heart of the village and almost touching the water. With its glass-front, the recent remodel maximises the wonderful views of the River Dart and offers splendid visions all the way out to sea. The open-plan concept and seamless transition of indoor to outdoor living creates a comfortable and luxurious space for those that need a few days of solid rest and recuperation. There's a dash of retro here, with a 1950s inspired long table, and bright and bold colours in the bedrooms. Enjoy a soak in the freestanding tub, feel your toes get toasty in front of the fire, and, as always, be sure to explore your beautiful surroundings. In our opinion, this home is a beautiful landmark of the Devon coastline, away from the busy tourist-heavy beaches – it's the idyllic summer getaway.

Calling all history buffs. This Grade II-listed apartment was the former headquarters of Captain Briggs, the leader of the D-Day landings at Omaha Beach. It's on the first floor – and the building itself is perched on a steep hill – so though you'll need to climb a few stairs, you'll be treated to postcard-worthy sea views. We love the cosy feel of the living space, especially the characterful window seats. And the location? It’s ideal for exploring. Lyme Regis Front Beach is a fifteen-minute stroll away, and the town's shops and eateries are nearby, too.

Situated in a private gated development, this penthouse apartment is all about the views. Easily accessible courtesy of the lift from the covered parking area, head on up to the third floor and you’ll find an open-plan, light-filled space waiting to welcome you home. The sea vistas are best enjoyed from the balcony over a glass of wine, but you’re spoilt with scenery from most parts of this home – fling open the bi-fold doors and take it all in. Better still, Salcombe's centre is just a short stroll away, so you'll never be too far from shops, eateries and the water.

Positioned overlooking Start Bay on the south coast of Devon, this home has been thoughtfully put together, making the most of its incredible views. Architect designed using a combination of steel, glass and stone, there's more than a hint of a Mediterranean feel to the place. The interiors are elegant and luxurious, with rooms spread across four floors and encompassing a self-contained studio apartment. With all eyes on the rolling hills and the seascape to the rear, the design features several balconies and terraces – all offering places to sit and take it all in. There's so much to love about this home, but some of our favourite features are the cinema room, the floor-to-ceiling views from the dining table and the choice of terraces outside where you can eat your meals together. By day you can explore the coastal paths and villages, or drive to Salcombe or Dartmouth in less than half an hour. If you're bringing your bucket and spade, you'll be pleased to know the beach at Slapton Sands is just a five-minute drive away.

This lovingly hand-crafted shepherd’s hut is meticulously designed throughout to offer every creature comfort you could imagine. Tucked away at the edge of an expansive farm estate, the two glorious cottages and barn conversion have been lovingly restored and furnished with a contemporary flourish. Gather your ensemble for a feast in the grand mid-night blue dining area. The two living and dining rooms are bright and light, each with a wood burner and plenty of logs to keep things cosy. Each bedroom has been individually styled with a blend of navy and sage green walls, and you'll find modern up-cycled furniture throughout to make you feel like you’re in a boutique hotel. If you fancy a tipple, there's a well-stocked honesty bar. The cottages are set within three acres of private land made up of rolling green hills, flower-filled meadows and tree-studded, landscaped gardens. It's utterly idyllic and you’ll struggle to tear yourself away – but if you can muster up the energy, the bustling market town of Honiton is around six miles away, and Branscombe Beach is a thirty-minute drive from home.

Set in the heart of bustling Salcombe, this former fisherman's cottage is a delightful place to call home. As you can expect, the interior has plenty of coastal charm, though it is a tad snug upstairs. All the contemporary comforts are accounted for, be it underfloor heating or White Company toiletries. Evenings call for cocktails in the front courtyard – there's a distillery just across the street where you can sample local gin. Also within walking distance are Salcombe's artisan shops, independent eateries, and picturesque harbour, perfect for dog walks in the sun.

More a way of life than a holiday home, this unique stay offers a wealth of outdoor activities and add-on experiences. Aimed at families who like to get out into the fresh air, it's a fabulous country house in an idyllic rural setting. Right on the River Avon, it's the perfect spot for wild swimming with a rope swing and river plunge pool in the garden. Set in its own pretty grounds, the rustic farmhouse can trace its roots back to the 12th century and has plenty of character. Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

River Dipping

This charming little cottage used to be owned by a coastguard and is like a home away from home – but with a better view. Every morning you get to wake up to the sound of the Start Way lake and the sea, with a gorgeous view of the glistening lake from one of the bedrooms. Homely and vibrant, the open–plan living area gives you the chance to pop the TV on while you cook breakfast. 

Stepping outside in the morning, you breathe in the ocean breeze while making your way to The Billy Can Cafe for a toasty cup of coffee. Spend the afternoon exploring the hidden gems that Devon has to offer – our favourite is the Stokeley farm shop that stocks products made by local artisans. With the dog–friendly beach practically on your doorstep, why not tuck into a steaming portion of traditional fish and chips while sitting on the sand? 

As the sun sets and the tide goes in, head back home to snuggle up in front of the fireplace. Pop your favourite film on, or pick up your latest read, and while away the rest of the day in total bliss.

Just a short stroll from the centre of Salcombe, this apartment is a refreshing coastal escape. The rooms are bright and breezy, the balcony has beautiful views across the estuary and we love the sweet extras like the Sonos sound system, Netflix and The White Company toiletries. Families should note that child-friendly amenities aren’t available here and that little ones will need to be supervised in the communal garden. Still, it’s a fantastic location with easy access to East Portlemouth's beaches, as well as hiking trails through the surrounding countryside – not to mention private parking for adventures further afield.
