The location and delightful suntrap garden make this a great choice for summer getaways – and your four-legged friends can come too.

There's a fantastic selection of eateries by the harbour front as well as a cosy pub that serves delicious local produce. Sink into the sofa with a glass of wine in hand as the sun sets on the horizon, or gather around the dining table, which is also conveniently located so that guests can lap up the views from wherever they are seated in the home. Open up the sliding doors and breathe in the fresh sea air from your private balcony which features two-day beds and a small table and chairs for blissful moments in the sun with privacy. For the cooler months, there's underfloor heating which will keep your toes toasty whatever the weather, and since you're in such a convenient location there's plenty to do when the beach isn't weather permitting too. Head out to discover the variety of shops and local eateries all within walking distance, or venture further afield by car to explore more attractions of the Hartland Peninsular and North Devon coastline.

Its secluded location makes for an ideal getaway for young families and couples seeking a romantic glamping retreat far removed from their hectic daily routine. Let the morning light pour in from the skylight overhead and step out for an alfresco morning coffee with views over the rolling hills. The luxurious roundhouse is located just a short drive from the coast, where you can enjoy lazy days on Cornwall's famed beaches or more active ones in the surf. For a completely different vibe, check out the steep cobbled streets of Clovelly that wind down towards the sea – just a twenty-minute drive away. After a day out, sink into the Jacuzzi with a glass of wine. Cosy up around the wood-burning stove and bid the twinkling stars overhead goodnight.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.  

Old Farmhouse

A fourteen-minute drive from the striking shores of the Hartland Heritage Coast, this rural escape really puts the ‘treat’ in retreat. It’s impossible not to be charmed by this wooden roundhouse in East Thorne. Its cylindrical design and delightful gardens bring a magical vibe that's sure to start off your holiday with a smile. Step inside to find a gorgeous wood-beamed ceiling and wood-burning stove in the main living space. While this hearth is the perfect setting for cosying up together on chilly evenings, there are even more activities for sunny days. Your private, outdoor area is spectacular – play games on the lawn, savour alfresco lunches on the picnic bench, grill up dinner on the barbecue, set up a campfire, and (best of all) soak in the hot tub under the stars all night.  We think a glass of champagne wouldn’t go amiss in this luxury setting. When you’ve spent enough time in the tub, head inside to lie back on the sumptuous bed and look up – find yet another stargazing spot via the ceiling porthole. Keep your eyes peeled for shooting stars.

This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. Curl up on the sofa to watch a family film and even make it cosier with the wood-burning stove, which can be lit for additional warmth or roasting marshmallows. Your little ones hopefully won’t object to bedtime with the twin rooms one of which is Star Wars-themed and the other which features a dollhouse mounted on the wall and a whimsical fairy wall hanging to decorate. We can’t promise they’ll want to stop playing and go to sleep though.

It might be shaped like a traditional wooden beach hut, but this new build home is bursting with everything you could need for a perfect stay in Devon. From underfloor heating to a handheld outdoor show for sandy feet (or paws), comfort is key. The bedrooms are downstairs, which might seem unusual at first, but trust us – French doors lead you from the master bedroom out to the hot tub, where you can indulge in a glass of wine or gaze up at the stars. Upstairs, the open-plan kitchen and living area has high ceilings, emphasizing the light and roomy atmosphere. Westward Ho! has an array of boutiques, restaurants and pubs to enjoy, and the sweeping sandy beach, just a fifteen-minute walk away, is ideal for leisurely sunset strolls, surfing or simply relaxing. A short five-minute car ride will take you to other exciting spots – the village of Appledore is well worth a visit – while those who want to spend the day on the fairways will be just a two-minute walk from the Royal North Devon Golf Club.

You'll find this bungalow tucked away behind a row of houses in a suburb of Bude. Crooklets beach, the nearest golf course and the town centre are all within a ten-minute walk, making this home a great base for exploring. While the interior is on the smaller side, it's plenty comfortable and the kitchen is well equipped for family meals. The patio and outdoor seating are ideal for quiet evenings, and the fenced garden is great for tiring out the kids.

Tinderbox Haven

Just a few metres from the beach at Instow, it won’t take you long to feel right at home in this seaside villa.

The open-plan setup is ideal for spending quality time with friends or family, whether cooking up a storm in the kitchen, sinking into the sofas or enjoying nibbles and drinks together. Folding doors lead you out onto the impressive terrace, where you can while away the hours watching the boats bobbing in the estuary. 

There’s also a second, more-compact living room, giving kids a place to chill out away from the grown-ups. It takes just a few minutes to meander down to the pubs and restaurants of Instow, and you can catch a ferry across the water to visit neighbouring Appledore during the high season. If you’d like a little more action, the nearby Tarka Trail offers fantastic cycling and walking, and the surf at Westward Ho! is fantastic for water sports. Bring your bikes and boards along, too, as there’s lockable storage for your bits and bobs here too. 

Starboard Side

With glorious views of Appledore Quay and easy access to lovely sandy beaches, this home makes for a delightful base for trips to Devon. 

The apartment is on the second floor, so the views of the estuary are gorgeous from dawn until dusk. And when the sun sets, there’s a telescope ready for stargazing in the clear skies – you could spend your whole stay looking out of the huge windows. 

When you can tear your eyes away from the view, you’ll be glad of the comfortable furnishings and thoughtful touches. You’re also just above a delicatessen and tearoom, so you needn’t travel far for a Devonshire cream tea.  

In the morning you might like to walk four minutes into the centre of Appledore, past the brightly coloured fishermen’s cottages, to visit the art galleries and craft shops. Pop into a cafe for coffee before strolling to the quay to watch the fishing boats and yachts in the distance. After lunch at the deli downstairs, hop on the small passenger ferry that whips you across the bay to Instow. There you’ll find a beautiful sandy beach – and hopefully an ice cream. Surfers will be pleased to be a nine-minute drive from the Blue Flag beach of Westward Ho!

However you spend your time, returning to the bright but cosy apartment will feel liking coming home. Sip wine in a bubble bath while someone else nips out for fish and chips, then sink onto one of the huge sofas for a night watching the stars.

This is a barn conversion in which the standard of the renovation has been of such quality that it's nigh-on impossible to picture its functional past. Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

The hosts built this home from the ground up – pulling up outside you'll immediately get the sense you're about to stay somewhere unique. And you'll get the personal touch too, as host Deborah and her family love to greet every guest on arrival. Style-wise, this home is equal parts classy and edgy; velvet upholstery and faux-fur throws contrast with neon signs and curious light fixtures in the bedrooms. The pièce de résistance is the gravity-defying fireplace in the living area, nothing short of a showstopper. You'll want to explore every room in depth to make sure you haven't missed anything. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. It's the perfect retreat for those seeking total tranquility in exceptional surroundings.

One glance at this thatched arts and crafts style cottage and you'll feel like you've stumbled into a fairytale. But instead of a faraway kingdom, you'll find this cosy homestead nestled in a quiet corner at the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Escape to pictuesque North Cornwall for a family-focussed stay in this charming cottage, situated in an idyllic countryside setting, just a short drive from the surfing hotspot of Bude.

The cottage's interior gives off a relaxed barefoot coastal vibe, with a driftwood sculpture on the coffee table, local landscapes adorning the walls, and a rustic dining table surrounded by deliberately mismatched chairs. Its open layout creates a social space where you can happily be preparing dinner in the kitchen, while holding a conversation with someone stretched out on the sofa by the front door. 

Upstairs, both cosy bedrooms are equipped with skylights that make for a gentle wake-up call each morning. Although you can always close the blackout blinds if you'd like a lie-in. In addition, plenty of built-in storage is handy when it comes to unpacked and settling into your home from home. 

Elsewhere, the site boasts an array of fantastic shared facilities, including a games room, children's playground and a campfire area. For us, you can't go wrong with a morning caffeine boost form the horse trailer turned cafe as you lead the kids off to feed the farm animals (available seasonally). 

For off-site escapades, your hosts have teamed up with the area's most outstanding artisans and adventurers to create a local list that includes everything from places serving sumptuous local produce to those offering exhilarating outdoor experiences.

This award-winning Victorian Gothic-style cottage set on a former daffodil farm makes for the ultimate romantic escape. While we'd probably leave the kid with grandma this time, a sofa bed and cot are available should you wish to plan a cosy stay for three. It's a studio arrangement, yet a separate eat-in kitchen and private garden give you more options than your typical single-room setup. The bunks in the children’s room will be a hit with mini swashbucklers, while the pizza oven on the patio should keep big kids quiet for a while. You’ll find the pretty village of Croyde a five-minute amble down the road, offering a charming selection of tea rooms, ice cream parlours and thatched pubs. After a hearty roast dinner, retreat home to the outdoor hot tub before turning in for the night in those luxurious king-size beds.
