Hidden among the verdant fields of North Devon, this charming country cottage is the perfect setting for a rural retreat to the English countryside. Built during the reign of King Henry V, it’s a shining example of Medieval architecture, boasting gorgeous, beamed ceilings and an inglenook fireplace, ideal for warming up after long walks through the cottage’s adjoining gardens. You’re not completely cut off from the 21st century, though – your hosts have provided a plethora of modern amenities to make your stay here as comfortable as possible.  Put your feet up in front of the TV, fire up the barbecue, or catch up on some work in the snug before heading out to explore the local area.

You’re deep in the heart of the Devonshire countryside here, so we’d recommend hiring a car to make the most of your stay. Drive into Dolton and treat yourself to hearty lunch at one of the local pubs, or make your way to Dartmoor National Park for a scenic walk through the moorlands. Then, when you’ve had your fill of being out and about, head back to your cosy home from home for an evening of relaxation with all your favourite people. What's not to love?

Awarded five stars and a gold accolade by Visit England, this pretty cottage nestled in the North Devon countryside ticks all the right boxes for a retreat for two. From the luxurious feeling bed and the Smeg fridge full of complimentary goodies to the modern wood burner and the Scandi-style hot tub, every detail has been thought of to make it the most romantic break possible. The location is a nature lover's dream with gorgeous surroundings (including the owners' 14-acre woodland, which you're welcome to explore) and hundreds of easily accessible walks – Dartmoor National Park is just forty-five minutes away by car, too. The hosts are among the most hospitable we've met and are happy to drop you off at a local pub if you fancy a glass of wine with your evening meal. If you decide to stay put, however, a magical night awaits. Fire up the Ooni for the kind of pizza a Neapolitan would be proud of (your host provides two balls of homemade pizza dough) and follow it with a soak in the hot tub under the stars. If you'd like to visit the coast, Bude and Westward Ho! are a little over half an hour away, so book yourself a surf lesson or get to grips with all kinds of kite sports.

To be honest, we knew we’d like this north Devon home when we heard about the country pub just two minutes' walk away but when we got here: wow! This is an immaculate and spotless cottage, newly renovated and decorated to provide everything guests need for a friends or family escape. We were particularly impressed with the number of living spaces – a family room, conservatory and study (for those working from home) as well as a living room and kitchen/diner. And there’s a large patio and cottage garden out back, for bright breakfasts and sunny afternoons. The hosts have thought of every eventuality: for when it’s raining there’s the smart TV, DVD player, movie library and games collection, while the wood-burner fireplace and newly installed underfloor heating ensure you’ll feel snug even on cold nights. Kids are especially well catered for with travel cot, step stool, high chair and junior dining chair as well as games, books and bath toys.The home is located between Torrington and Bideford in Devon, giving you access to walks across the rolling hills, short drives on to Dartmoor, and bucket-and-spade jaunts to the seaside. And, of course, there's that great, super-local village pub... If you’re looking for a staycation that’s a cut above the ordinary, this is a good ‘un.

Nestled on the outskirts of Okehampton, this home promises a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Full of 18th-century charm, it’s a cosy place to call home and offers plenty of space for up to ten people to spread out. The sunroom is an added bonus, serving as a second living room, perfect for those travelling with children who want their own space. And with Dartmoor National Park and Lydford Gorge nearby, and the beaches of Teignmouth, Dawlish, and Exmouth within an hour’s drive, this is an ideal base for those who love the great outdoors as much as we do.

Just a few metres from the beach at Instow, it won’t take you long to feel right at home in this seaside villa.

The open-plan setup is ideal for spending quality time with friends or family, whether cooking up a storm in the kitchen, sinking into the sofas or enjoying nibbles and drinks together. Folding doors lead you out onto the impressive terrace, where you can while away the hours watching the boats bobbing in the estuary. 

There’s also a second, more-compact living room, giving kids a place to chill out away from the grown-ups. It takes just a few minutes to meander down to the pubs and restaurants of Instow, and you can catch a ferry across the water to visit neighbouring Appledore during the high season. If you’d like a little more action, the nearby Tarka Trail offers fantastic cycling and walking, and the surf at Westward Ho! is fantastic for water sports. Bring your bikes and boards along, too, as there’s lockable storage for your bits and bobs here too.

Groups of friends and families seeking seaside adventures with modern comforts will make an excellent match for this spacious Instow village home. With four bright and airy rooms overlooking the Marine Parade and a large open-concept living space, you can really enjoy the sea breeze from the comfort of this home. Water sports and charming village pubs, shops and restaurants are all right at your doorstep, but for an equally delightful adventure, rent bicycles and join the famous Tarka Trail.

Set among twenty-five acres of grounds in the Devon countryside, this Victorian manor house is a real showstopper in which charming period features rub shoulders quite happily with modern amenities.

Among the manicured garden, you'll find a saltwater swimming pool that's heated by solar panels, a tennis court surrounded by Rhodendrum bushes and corners with orchards and vegetable patches — not to mention a Grade II-listed grotto. If rain cancels play at any point, you can always head into the barn that's been converted into a dance-studio-come-yoga-space. In here, there's also a well-equipped gym, an infra-red sauna and a games room to keep you busy.

That's before we've even got to the home itself. It's hard not to be instantly wowed by the grand dining room, double-aspect living rooms and hallway complete with a baby grand piano. Upstairs, there are bedrooms to suit every design taste, from four-poster beds straight out of a period drama to more contemporary options.

Although there's plenty to keep you occupied without leaving the address, the excellent location gives you heaps more options. There are a pair of pubs and a restaurant in the surrounding village of Chumleigh, while both Westward Ho! and Saunton Sands beaches take fifty minutes to reach in the car. There are walking routes galore in the surrounding Devon countryside, too.

Only minutes away from the Royal North Devon Golf Club, this home – coincidentally built by the same designer in 1865 – is the perfect option for large groups looking to explore the Devon coastline. 

And as much as this is a haven for golfing enthusiasts, it’s also the ideal location for beach lovers who get to spend sun-drenched days on Westward Ho! Beach. You can see those very shores from the perched hot tub in the backyard. Ease yourself into the warm water with a glass of wine and enjoy the views as you relax after a day of activity. 

Inside, find plush furnishings in muted greys, greens, and blues that come alive in the natural light of the large windows. There’s an understated elegance that works beautifully alongside the modern and homely elements of this home. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. If you’re looking for a bohemian escape in Cornwall, then look no further. This rustic hideaway is perfect for a solo traveller or a couple looking to get in touch with the raw beauty of the Cornish countryside and who care most about the luxuries of the soul – great music, fantastic light, the roar of the waves. This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. The large windows throughout the home light up the space as you play on the vintage arcade table that offers the classical Space Invaders and Pacman. Whoever gets to sleep in the Captain's Cabin bedroom gets a gorgeous view of the surrounding harbour right from the comfort of their own bed – imagine waking up next to that blissful sight every morning.

The beautiful yet convenient location makes this the perfect place to reside on a family getaway to a seaside town. There's a fantastic selection of eateries by the harbour front as well as a cosy pub that serves delicious local produce. Wander the streets of Brixham to discover a ton of local hidden gems and treat yourself to sugary sweet treats and savory snacks.

If the gentle trickle of water helps you relax and you're a lover of the great outdoors, this fabulous home is sure to delight you. Right next to a narrow part of the River Harbourne, which leads to the Dart, it's a converted fruit barn with bags of character and more than its fair share of chic styling. 

Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. On the outskirts of a village near Totnes, you'll be ideally positioned to access all of the South Hams easily by car. And keen walkers can head off to Totnes, Tuckenhay, Cornworthy and more. There are two good pubs within walking distance and the nearby Sharpham Estate has a great farm shop.

It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

The bedrooms are downstairs, which might seem unusual at first, but trust us – French doors lead you from the master bedroom out to the hot tub, where you can indulge in a glass of wine or gaze up at the stars. Upstairs, the open-plan kitchen and living area has high ceilings, emphasizing the light and roomy atmosphere. Westward Ho! has an array of boutiques, restaurants and pubs to enjoy, and the sweeping sandy beach, just a fifteen-minute walk away, is ideal for leisurely sunset strolls, surfing or simply relaxing. A short five-minute car ride will take you to other exciting spots – the village of Appledore is well worth a visit – while those who want to spend the day on the fairways will be just a two-minute walk from the Royal North Devon Golf Club.

One glance at those panoramic views and it's love at first sight. Perched just above Woolacombe Beach, if you're anything like us, you'll spend nearly every moment here on the expansive deck, watching the tide rise and fall – except when you're sunbathing on the sand or surfing the waves, of course. Wake up to the ocean vistas each morning, then following an alfresco breakfast, stroll down to the beach for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the water. End the evening with a barbecue and a glass of wine, watching as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it?

You can even make the most of the scenery inside, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that drench the entire home in natural light. Contemporary and cool, we love how the coastal colour scheme reflects the backdrop – and all the mod-cons are accounted for. The rainfall showers in the en-suite bathrooms are hotel-worthy, a high-spec kitchen stocked with culinary gear (including a wine chiller) is a dream to cook in and Netflix, Now TV, books and board games will keep you entertained on rainy days. 

Location-wise, you can follow the South West Coastal Path into Woolacombe for eateries and pubs (about a fifteen-minute walk), or head in the opposite direction and check out the views from Morte Point (twenty-five minutes away). There's also some great golfing at Saunton if you fancy a day on the fairway, while many of North Devon's gems are within driving distance. 

Ripples in the Sea

With glorious views of Appledore Quay and easy access to lovely sandy beaches, this home makes for a delightful base for trips to Devon. 

The apartment is on the second floor, so the views of the estuary are gorgeous from dawn until dusk. And when the sun sets, there’s a telescope ready for stargazing in the clear skies – you could spend your whole stay looking out of the huge windows. 

When you can tear your eyes away from the view, you’ll be glad of the comfortable furnishings and thoughtful touches. You’re also just above a delicatessen and tearoom, so you needn’t travel far for a Devonshire cream tea.  

In the morning you might like to walk four minutes into the centre of Appledore, past the brightly coloured fishermen’s cottages, to visit the art galleries and craft shops. Pop into a cafe for coffee before strolling to the quay to watch the fishing boats and yachts in the distance. After lunch at the deli downstairs, hop on the small passenger ferry that whips you across the bay to Instow. There you’ll find a beautiful sandy beach – and hopefully an ice cream. Surfers will be pleased to be a nine-minute drive from the Blue Flag beach of Westward Ho!

However you spend your time, returning to the bright but cosy apartment will feel liking coming home. Sip wine in a bubble bath while someone else nips out for fish and chips, then sink onto one of the huge sofas for a night watching the stars.  



Celestial Landing

A light-filled retreat surrounded by wildflowers, this charming cottage is on the fringe of the sprawling moorlands of Exmoor National Park and only thirty minutes from the sandy Saunton coast. This idyllic location gives you prime rural privacy, with effortless access to hiking trails, cycling paths, quaint hamlets and the shores of the North Devon Coast.

Inside, modern rustic charm awaits with exposed beam ceilings and a wood-burning fireplace that beckons cosy evenings on the sofa with a glass of wine and a few games of chess. The contemporary and country-style decor spreads to the bedroom where you’ll find your exposed stonework and french doors opening out to your private terrace, surrounded by bounding fields and a plethora of wildlife. On sunny mornings, whip up some eggs - the hamlet shop is a six-minute drive - and enjoy on the deck before heading out to explore the abundance of nature in the North Devon area.

You’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic walks, from trails through forested woods and paths proffering stunning views leading to the Heddon Valley (a twenty-five-minute drive away). You’re also only twenty-five minutes from the South West Coast Path where you can track the Jurassic coastline. When you’ve completed your route, head home to your tranquil haven to sink into the hot tub and watch the star-scattered sky. 

Home in the Hamlet

Fishing boats and surfboards sit side by side in the harbour, just outside this home’s walls. It’s in the centre of Looe, just five minutes from the beach and a three-minute walk from the train station. A working fishing town, the immediate area is filled with restaurants and pubs serving the freshest catch of the day and there’s a town beach where soft sand slips into turquoise sea. 

The view from big, Victoriana windows is over the quayside of the East Looe River so you can watch boats putting in and out. This place may look like a grand, Victorian villa on the outside, but inside it’s pristine white and modern with vibrant pops of silky blue. An exposed stone fireplace still sits at the heart of the living room though, where French doors let the natural light stream in. Cook your own catch of the day in the ultra-modern kitchen which is big enough for several chefs to bustle around in.

The real bonus here is the private terrace, which is set with a table and chairs. Overlooking the quayside, this is the perfect spot to share a bottle of something bubbly as the sun goes down over the water.

Rose Cocoon is a rural retreat with antique furnishings and stunning surroundings. Nestled alongside the barns and farmhouse of host Victoria’s organic farm, it makes for a great nesting place after countryside walks, wholesome meals and boutique shopping at nearby Tavistock. The master bedroom features garden views and gorgeous natural light. The second bedroom is quiet and cosy with comfy beds and quality bed linen. The home’s wooden panelling and landscape paintings reflect the traditional English setting and create a homely environment, and the heated pool is the perfect place for relaxing.

Just a few metres from the River Torridge, this home is tucked down a narrow cobbled lane in the heart of postcard-pretty Appledore. It might look like a cute and cosy fisherman's cottage from the outside, but step inside and you'll find three floors of pure luxury. 

Let's start up top, where the converted attic is home to the main bedroom. Striking wooden beams adorn the ceiling, giving a rustic vibe to an otherwise modern and understated decor. Two more stylish bedrooms and a lavish family bathroom – complete with an absolutely lush claw foot, roll top bath – make up the first floor.

On the ground level, the plush lounge has a fireplace for snuggling up on chilly English evenings, while the French doors open up to a heated courtyard which is simply divine – we can't think of a better spot to while away summer evenings, sipping wine and nibbling on snacks rustled up in the glossy kitchen.

This home is perfectly positioned for adventures around North Devon. Enjoy a stroll along the river, followed by a tour of the North Devon Maritime Museum (a four-minute walk away). For lunch, try the seaside rite of passage – steaming hot fish and chips and an ice cream cone for dessert. If it's the beach you crave, drive ten minutes to Westward Ho! – a Blue Flag beach where the kids can try watersports while you pitch a parasol and relax on the golden sands.

The Elegant Estuary

Nestled in a typical Devon valley with house martins nesting under the eaves, cattle grazing in the distance and minimal phone reception, you could be forgiven for thinking you've stepped back in time. From the moment you walk in the door, you'll immediately feel the stresses and strains of everyday life melt away. The home has been sympathetically converted to retain its evident charm, with the addition of luxurious modern comforts (including wi-fi – so you won't be completely disconnected from the world). The spacious kitchen is equipped with an AGA for the ultimate in countryside chic, though there's also an induction hob as a backup, plus antique chairs and a beautiful walnut dining table. Through to the new section of the house and you're treated to double-height ceilings and plenty of natural light, in addition to a couple of bedrooms. The upstairs bedroom enjoys views overlooking the orchard and terraced lawns from the open mezzanine beside it. Outside in the garden, you'll find a contemplative space abuzz with insect life throughout the spring and summer, thanks to an abundance of wildflowers. There are plenty of walks from the house, many along secluded footpaths traversing unspoiled valleys – there's a chance you might not meet another soul. If you can tear yourself away, you'll find plenty of pubs and hotels serving fantastic seasonal produce and locally brewed beers. Alternatively, drop by Alder Vineyard – a ten-minute drive away – for a journey far beyond the bottle.



The Old School House

This stunning 5-bedroom family home is nestled into the hillside of the Kingswear headland, and offers stunning views of the valley. The open-plan living space maximises the views, and there's a further sitting room and family room. Upstairs, two of the king-size bedrooms (one en suite) have private balconies. The third bedroom is styled for a soothing sleep and a refreshing start.

Slow down for a while at this luxurious shepherd’s hut hideaway, nestled deep in the rolling countryside between Dartmoor National Park and the Tamar Valley. Recline in the log-fired hot tub (there’s room for two) with nothing but patchwork farmlands on the horizon (and the occasional sheep or pony trotting by). Enjoy evenings roasting marshmallows on a fire pit (which handily doubles as your barbecue) beneath a blanket of stars - on a clear night, you can see right to the milky way. Or take things indoors to curl up on the sofa with a good book –⁠ the wood-burning stove (and central heating) will keep things toasty. And when it’s time to lay your head, a king-size bed adorned with crisp-white linens is waiting for a blissful night’s sleep. Should you ever be tempted to leave this little idyll, you’re just a thirteen-minute drive from the charming historic village of Tavistock. Mosey about its bustling shops, and if you time it right, the weekly farmers market. Then dive into the traditional inn for real ales, good upper-crust pub food, and a warm welcome.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.
