An imposing place, built from local stone some 200 years ago, it's set over three floors and is the star of the show. On arrival here you can bag yourself one of the plush, en-suite bedrooms, before gathering for drinks in the formal entertaining space downstairs (there's a dining table with places for eighteen). Elsewhere, the barns have been converted, creating six one-bed cottages and suites around a shared courtyard. If you're planning a big celebration, you can also rent the enormous glass-roofed barn nearby, with its event kitchen. Around the estate you'll find all the things you'd hope for in a farm. Built around 1825 and once a rubble ruin, the home has been completely modernised, with plenty of contemporary luxuries blending with the building's original structures. We love the extended kitchen and dining space, where beams and exposed stone walls give way to gunmetal grey patio doors and a glass ceiling.

Designed to be cosy for four but with the option of adding two children in the spacious master suite, it's a beautiful home with several standout features. This is a barn conversion in which the standard of the renovation has been of such quality that it's nigh-on impossible to picture its functional past. Set in twenty-six acres of Devon countryside, the building has been given some hi-tech features, including a ground-source heating system and an intelligent lighting system, as well as a lot of large glass windows that make the space a lot brighter than could be expected of an old barn. Our favourite space has to be the mezzanine lounge, reached via a glass spiral staircase and with a skylight on one side that's perfect for stargazing. The large kitchen looks the picture of modernity, but there's an Aga in place for a touch of rusticness. Stepping outside, there's a large patio area complete with an alfresco dining table, barbecue and fire pit, so you can sit out here on summer evenings and bask in the spectacular view of Longcombe Valley. The medieval town of Totnes can be reached in seven minutes in the car and offers plenty of quaint shops and restaurants to explore. Paignton Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

This fantastic Victorian villa in the English Riviera is the perfect home for family holidays. Located in Paignton, this home is only a short walk from many great activities including Paignton Beach – a nineteen-minute walk away – where you will find the pier, the Geopark, a fairy cove, pirates bay adventure golf, and even a multiplex cinema perfect for those typical rainy British days. What’s more, Splashdown water park is a short nine-minute walk away and Torbay Leisure Centre – with its pool, gym and squash courts – is reachable in twelve minutes on foot.

Your little ones will love letting off steam in the home’s large, enclosed garden too, with the kid's swing, trampoline, treehouse, football goal and pirate boat. Meanwhile, you can relax on the garden bench with a good book or enjoy an afternoon Devonshire cream tea alfresco at the outdoor dining area. 

When it’s time to come indoors, head from the decked veranda through the French doors into the living space. Curl up on the sofa to watch a family film and even make it cosier with the wood-burning stove, which can be lit for additional warmth or roasting marshmallows. Your little ones hopefully won’t object to bedtime with the twin rooms one of which is Star Wars-themed and the other which features a dollhouse mounted on the wall and a whimsical fairy wall hanging to decorate. For a quintessential Devon break, it doesn't get much better than this elegant Victorian farmstead. Built by Lord Hamberdon's estate in 1833, this country house commands unbroken views to Haytor Rocks some three miles away. Your hosts have lovingly restored this home over the years, being careful to maintain its original features. As a result, it's got character in spades. The kitchen strikes just the right balance between rustic charm and modern convenience, while the adjacent breakfast room makes it a lovely space for a slow start to the day, and direct garden access comes into its own on sunny mornings. Elsewhere on the ground floor, there's a dining room that's perfect for gathering together as a group and a cosy living room for that post-lunch nap by the fire. Head upstairs, and you'll find two master bedrooms, both with en-suites and stunning views south across the National Park, with a further two bedrooms on the same floor. Outside, the large walled garden enjoys Dartmoor views as far as the eye can see. There's a gorgeous covered seating area that's perfect for eating outdoors, while the bubbling hot tub is just the cherry on top. Far from any light pollution, we can't think of anything better than enjoying a post-dog walk soak as the stars emerge. There's also croquet and swing ball to keep the kids busy. Enjoy excellent walking, cycling, and horse riding directly from your front door. There are also a variety of fantastic local pubs to choose from.

Perfect for families, little ones will love to explore this haven for wildlife – just bear in mind that there’s an unfenced pond and stream here, so children and dogs will need to be supervised when enjoying the outdoor space. Is the coast calling your name? It’s a mere twenty-minute drive to Blackpool Sands.

Upon the English Riviera, staying in the warm climate of the sophisticated town of Torquay feels like the equivalent of Cannes. Hop off a yacht at Torquay Marina and take an eighteen-minute stroll to this fabulous apartment, fit for any VIP. Upon arrival, your host will have a bottle of wine waiting for you. Before you even start exploring this modern flat, pour yourself a glass and say cheers to the start of the holiday. Do you like a home with a view? Because this one offers several. From its many large windows, you can spot the bay, beaches, harbours, the marina, and of course the big blue sea itself. On a sunny day, we recommend taking a bowl of olives and a chilled prosecco out to the private balcony – pop up the parasol if it gets too hot. Indoors, pristine white and cream interiors make the space feel fresh, with a mint-green sofa which you can sink into after a long day of beachside activities. South Devon might feel distinctly Mediterranean, but you’ll certainly enjoy ending the day with a refreshing cup of Earl Grey.

But instead of a faraway kingdom, you'll find this cosy homestead nestled in a quiet corner at the edge of Dartmoor National Park. It's the perfect place to escape to the country – one glance at those striking views over the Teign Valley from the private garden and you'll never want to return to the bustle of city life (we sure didn't). Inside, the magic continues, with an inviting sitting room perfect for family time and a country-style kitchen that has everything you'll need to rustle up a meal. We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

Everything about it is charming and quirky, with its narrow 17th Century frontage having earned it the nickname 'the skinny house' locally. Set on one of Dartmouth's hillside roads, it also happens to have uninterrupted views over the town, the river and all the way to the sea.

With three main floors, guests enter through an ancient door surrounded by exquisite carvings dating back to 1629, when the town was known for its shipbuilding. Originally the entrance and annexe to Mount Galpine House, owned by the notable Holdsworth family, it's recently been modernised and converted into a delightful home away from home. Perfect for families, there's a great deal of space to spread out in, with an open layout to the fully equipped kitchen and dining space – with one of the best views in the house. And we'd have been quite content if it stopped there, but this home also comes with a slight surprise – underneath the rear terrace, you'll find a bonus room used as a gym, with a treadmill, bike machine and weights.

Enjoy all your meals on the sunny terrace during the summer months, gaze out across the sea and even watch the steam trains go about their business at the local heritage railway. It's just a walk or a short drive to Broadsands Beach, and you can choose between heading out for a day at Paignton Zoo, visiting Brixham Harbour or even grabbing your clubs for a game of golf nearby – it's all within easy striking distance.

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace.
