This beautiful country home is steeped in history – the colonial-style building is Grade II listed, and it is said that former Prime Minister William Gladstone once stayed here when visiting Braunton. 

The bay window looks out onto the historic parish church, and there is an excellent village pub right next door for when you’re in need of some refreshment or a tasty pub lunch. The cosy sitting room has a wood-burning stove and comes with a complimentary basket of logs, and there’s an additional snug with a sofa and TV – just pop on one of the many DVDs available in the library and settle in for a movie night. You’ll also have the bright and modern kitchen at your disposal – why not rustle up a quick, delicious supper, which you can then enjoy in the spacious dining area.  

A picturesque stretch of the Tarka Trail is close by, offering paths for walking and cycling, while a short car ride will take you to an array of lovely beaches, including Saunton and Croyde. You can indulge in water sports such as surfing and canoeing here, and the house has storage space for boards. Located a couple of minutes’ drive from Croyde beach, where you’ll spend long days surfing and soaking up the salty sea breeze, the inside of the home is beautifully sophisticated, with subtle nautical nods—we loved the knot wallpaper and delicate fish shoal light shade. The bunks in the children’s room will be a hit with mini swashbucklers, while the pizza oven on the patio should keep big kids quiet for a while. You’ll find the pretty village of Croyde a five-minute amble down the road, offering a charming selection of tea rooms, ice cream parlours and thatched pubs. After a hearty roast dinner, retreat home to the outdoor hot tub before turning in for the night in those luxurious king-size beds.

Enjoy a lazy lie in before heading to the beach to swim, surf and explore Braunton Burrows’ immense sand dunes. With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

This place had us on those sweeping countryside views alone – it’s just green paddocks and rolling valleys for as far as the eye can see. And that was before we’d even noticed that suntrap terrace with hot tub.

Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. Splash about in the heated indoor pool. Let little ones burn off steam in the impressive play area (or indoor soft play and games room should the weather turn). Meet the estate’s farm animals (over fifty and counting) at feeding time. Grab yourself some ‘me time’ with an onsite yoga or aqua aerobics class. Or head off on an adventure with furry friends through the gardens, sunken lanes, meadows, and streams (perfect for little dam-builders) – there are sixteen acres to explore here.

When thoughts turn to food, pick your own at the estate’s kitchen garden and greenhouse then rustle up a bite to eat at home. Or grab something from the onsite honesty shop, stocked with frozen meals, BBQ packs from the local farm shop, and lashings of ice cream. Then all that’s left to do is put your feet up and hunker down at home. With its four-poster beds and flagstone flooring, this cute-as-a-button hideaway delivers all the cottage charms you’re chasing.

Rejuvenate with sea views and fresh country air at this Grade II listed farmhouse nestled on the outskirts of postcard-pretty Berrynarbor and just a seven-minute drive from the coast.

Having served the surrounding Devon farmland for hundreds of years, this traditional stone and slate barn has experienced quite a transformation in recent times, with a spectacular mezzanine bringing all the wow factor.

In winter months, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) or get together around the dining table. It’s an atmospheric place to spend many an evening with the lofty wooden beams overhead. 

When the sun shines, head out into the pretty garden to soak up those sea vistas from the raised terrace as you fire up the barbecue. There’s heaps of space for kids to run amuck on the lawns leading down to a babbling stream. And be sure to seek out the hammock squirreled away in the trees – it’s got your name all over it.

When it’s time to get up and at ’em, nip into Berrynarbor with its characterful pubs and inns (just an eight-minute drive) and Ilfracombe with its beautiful fishing harbour (a ten-minute drive). Or ditch the car and pick up the coastal bridle path leading down to Hele with its tiny cove – it’s as idyllic as it sounds.

This original Georgian house has been completely reimagined, extended and turned into the ideal hub for large groups of friends or extended families after seamless modern living along the beautiful Devon countryside. With its fantastic surfing conditions, nearby Croyde Beach (twenty minutes on foot) is a destination for fans of water sports, and its golden sands are perfect for building sandcastles too. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, Croyde has some fantastic cafes, pubs and restaurants where you can refuel and possibly sample a famous Devon cream tea. Back at home, you’ll find a wet room where you can rinse off the salt and sand, as well as a grand clawfoot bath for the perfect ending to a delightful day.

If you love a beach holiday, this cute home is perfect for you. Such is the proximity to one of the beaches, you can see the lapping waves and golden sands from the privacy of your cute garden. Sitting with a cup of coffee in the morning – listening to the sound of the waves touching the shore – is the perfect way to start your day.

The home is also within walking distance of two other beaches along Woolacombe's pretty esplanade – you can take trips to all three and discover your favourite. If you're feeling peckish after swimming, numerous pubs and restaurants reside nearby in Woolacombe centre.

Whilst you're out, pick up some supplies to enjoy back at the apartment. A deluxe dining table is made for sharing plates of fish and chips, complemented by a crisp glass of something cold.

Upstairs, you'll find the bedrooms and bathrooms, one of which contains a bath for when you need to soothe the mind and body. Light some candles and pour in the bubble bath to truly relax before you go to bed.

Perched just above Woolacombe Beach, if you're anything like us, you'll spend nearly every moment here on the expansive deck, watching the tide rise and fall – except when you're sunbathing on the sand or surfing the waves, of course. Wake up to the ocean vistas each morning, then following an alfresco breakfast, stroll down to the beach for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the water. End the evening with a barbecue and a glass of wine, watching as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it?

You can even make the most of the scenery inside, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that drench the entire home in natural light. Contemporary and cool, we love how the coastal colour scheme reflects the backdrop – and all the mod-cons are accounted for. The rainfall showers in the en-suite bathrooms are hotel-worthy, a high-spec kitchen stocked with culinary gear (including a wine chiller) is a dream to cook in and Netflix, Now TV, books and board games will keep you entertained on rainy days. 

Location-wise, you can follow the South West Coastal Path into Woolacombe for eateries and pubs (about a fifteen-minute walk), or head in the opposite direction and check out the views from Morte Point (twenty-five minutes away). There's also some great golfing at Saunton if you fancy a day on the fairway, while many of North Devon's gems are within driving distance.

A garden-level apartment in a freshly converted building, it's got space, style and knockout sea views. Perfect for a family or a group of friends getting away to the coast, it's both contemporary and comfortable. 

Inside, the enormous open-plan living space is the star of the show, with a vast lounge area, dining space and a well kitted-out kitchen. Fling open the sets of doors and just breathe in that sea air. We particularly love the covered terrace, with cosy outdoor sofas so you can sip your drinks and admire the view. The master bedroom comes with an in-room freestanding bathtub and the luxurious shower room is decked out in marble, with a fabulous rainfall shower.

By day, splash and play on the beach (don't forget your surfboards – there's a place to store them here) or head to nearby Croyde and Woolacombe. Walk the sand dunes of Braunton Burrows or play a round at Saunton Golf Club, and in the evening enjoy meals together at the big dining table. The apartment is on the second floor, so the views of the estuary are gorgeous from dawn until dusk. And when the sun sets, there’s a telescope ready for stargazing in the clear skies – you could spend your whole stay looking out of the huge windows. 

When you can tear your eyes away from the view, you’ll be glad of the comfortable furnishings and thoughtful touches. You’re also just above a delicatessen and tearoom, so you needn’t travel far for a Devonshire cream tea.  

In the morning you might like to walk four minutes into the centre of Appledore, past the brightly coloured fishermen’s cottages, to visit the art galleries and craft shops. Pop into a cafe for coffee before strolling to the quay to watch the fishing boats and yachts in the distance. After lunch at the deli downstairs, hop on the small passenger ferry that whips you across the bay to Instow. There you’ll find a beautiful sandy beach – and hopefully an ice cream. Surfers will be pleased to be a nine-minute drive from the Blue Flag beach of Westward Ho!

However you spend your time, returning to the bright but cosy apartment will feel liking coming home. Sip wine in a bubble bath while someone else nips out for fish and chips, then sink onto one of the huge sofas for a night watching the stars.

The Lodgings

Look out over the fine golden sands and peeling surf of Woolacombe Bay from this boutique three-bedroom apartment. Just 150m from an award-winning beach, one of the finest in the South West, there are few better places for a family holiday that ticks all the boxes. Surfers, sunbathers and sand castle builders flock here over the warmer months (with committed surfers remaining in the depths of winter) and it's easy to see why.

The apartment is split across two levels, with a beach-inspired barefoot luxury interior that opens out onto two glass-fronted furnished balconies, one on each level. Wake up each morning, brew yourself a coffee and check the surf from the comfort of your apartment. Sure, you could check the internet, but it's not the same. With its inviting open layout, the kitchen/dining room/living area encourages you to spend time together as a group.

You're also ideally located for easy access to the bars, restaurants and surf shops that line Woolacombe's centre. After an early morning surf and a day spent enjoying all the on-site facilities at your disposal – including a gym, heated pool and sauna – why not head into town for a seafood dinner and to catch an open mic night at a local bar? While there are options to suit all tastes, enthusiastically tucking into an authentic Sri Lankan curry at nearby Barricane Beach is a sunset experience that's hard to top.

There's little reason to venture far for sun, sea and surf unless you're sheltering from south-westerlies at  Putsborough or seeking out the occasionally heavy beach break at Croyde. However, keen golfers might like to test their mettle on the challenging links course at Saunton Golf Club, while landscape lovers should take the opportunity to explore the wilds of Exmoor's western edge, both within a half-hour drive.
