Gain entry via the porch on a pedestrian walkway before opening up the stable door to the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room featuring a log burner, comfy sofa and space under the central staircase for a dog bed – setting everything up perfectly for a cosy evening. On the other side of the stairs are your dining space and small but perfectly formed kitchen. Head upstairs, and behind the solid oak door, you'll uncover a lovely bedroom with exposed beams and soothing neutral decor. Across the hallway is a modern bathroom with a 3/4-size compact bath and an additional bedroom that's set up for children. The cottage is well located for guests to access the two-mile stretch of golden sand at Woolacombe that runs down to Putsborough, around a fifteen-minute drive away. The beach backs onto a small town with everything surfers and beach lovers could need to stock up on before taking to the surf.

This beautiful country home is steeped in history – the colonial-style building is Grade II listed, and it is said that former Prime Minister William Gladstone once stayed here when visiting Braunton. 

The bay window looks out onto the historic parish church, and there is an excellent village pub right next door for when you’re in need of some refreshment or a tasty pub lunch. The cosy sitting room has a wood-burning stove and comes with a complimentary basket of logs, and there’s an additional snug with a sofa and TV – just pop on one of the many DVDs available in the library and settle in for a movie night. You’ll also have the bright and modern kitchen at your disposal – why not rustle up a quick, delicious supper, which you can then enjoy in the spacious dining area.  

A picturesque stretch of the Tarka Trail is close by, offering paths for walking and cycling, while a short car ride will take you to an array of lovely beaches, including Saunton and Croyde. When – weary from wandering and ensuring you've picked up some local goods on your travels – knock up a hearty meal and get cosy on the sofa with a good book. The interior has a real classic summertime look, with its exposed wood, light blue tones and French doors. Through to the bedroom, you'll find a continuation of the main living space with tasteful artwork and a gingham throw adding to the charm of this home-sweet-home.

If you're looking for a sweeping dramatic view, beautifully decorated and comforting interior, plenty for the kids to do, and within easy reach of plenty of seaside fun, you've come to the right place. From the outside, you could almost convince yourself that you're at a (very nice!) pub, with round pub benches complete with sun umbrellas. It's the perfect laidback vibe for enjoying a drink while taking in the panoramic view of Woolacombe Beach and the North Devon countryside. Relaxing in your hot tub, a nice drink in hand, while looking out at the sweeping vista sounds like bliss.

The outdoor area's open and bright feel continues through to the interior, which is cloaked in neutral tones and chestnut woods. It's stylish yet inviting, with local artwork adding a touch of the beautiful Devon coast and countryside. Not that you could miss it – large windows encircle the home, offering ample opportunity to gaze at the mesmerising surfers all day long. And when you want to get out there yourself, you're less than a ten-minute walk to the beach. There, you'll find beautiful soft sand, beach cafes, and a surf school – why not test out the waves?

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.  

Old Farmhouse

Did somebody say beach? Few places can boast of having direct access to one of Devon's finest beaches, but from this home, you can step out of the door, through the shared garden and onto the footpath down to Saunton Sands. A garden-level apartment in a freshly converted building, it's got space, style and knockout sea views. Perfect for a family or a group of friends getting away to the coast, it's both contemporary and comfortable. 

Inside, the enormous open-plan living space is the star of the show, with a vast lounge area, dining space and a well kitted-out kitchen. Fling open the sets of doors and just breathe in that sea air. We particularly love the covered terrace, with cosy outdoor sofas so you can sip your drinks and admire the view. The master bedroom comes with an in-room freestanding bathtub and the luxurious shower room is decked out in marble, with a fabulous rainfall shower.

By day, splash and play on the beach (don't forget your surfboards – there's a place to store them here) or head to nearby Croyde and Woolacombe. Walk the sand dunes of Braunton Burrows or play a round at Saunton Golf Club, and in the evening enjoy meals together at the big dining table. It's even dog-friendly there's so no need to leave out your four-legged family members here.

For pubs and restaurants, head inland to Braunton (five minutes by car), or for a change of scenery, make the fifteen-minute drive to Woolacombe.

You’re also only twenty-five minutes from the South West Coast Path where you can track the Jurassic coastline. When you’ve completed your route, head home to your tranquil haven to sink into the hot tub and watch the star-scattered sky.

Rejuvenate with sea views and fresh country air at this Grade II listed farmhouse nestled on the outskirts of postcard-pretty Berrynarbor and just a seven-minute drive from the coast.

Having served the surrounding Devon farmland for hundreds of years, this traditional stone and slate barn has experienced quite a transformation in recent times, with a spectacular mezzanine bringing all the wow factor.

In winter months, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) or get together around the dining table. It’s an atmospheric place to spend many an evening with the lofty wooden beams overhead. 

When the sun shines, head out into the pretty garden to soak up those sea vistas from the raised terrace as you fire up the barbecue. There’s heaps of space for kids to run amuck on the lawns leading down to a babbling stream. And be sure to seek out the hammock squirreled away in the trees – it’s got your name all over it.

When it’s time to get up and at ’em, nip into Berrynarbor with its characterful pubs and inns (just an eight-minute drive) and Ilfracombe with its beautiful fishing harbour (a ten-minute drive). Or ditch the car and pick up the coastal bridle path leading down to Hele with its tiny cove – it’s as idyllic as it sounds.

This place had us on those sweeping countryside views alone – it’s just green paddocks and rolling valleys for as far as the eye can see. And that was before we’d even noticed that suntrap terrace with hot tub.

Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. Splash about in the heated indoor pool. Let little ones burn off steam in the impressive play area (or indoor soft play and games room should the weather turn). Meet the estate’s farm animals (over fifty and counting) at feeding time. Grab yourself some ‘me time’ with an onsite yoga or aqua aerobics class. Or grab something from the onsite honesty shop, stocked with frozen meals, BBQ packs from the local farm shop, and lashings of ice cream. Then all that’s left to do is put your feet up and hunker down at home. With its four-poster beds and flagstone flooring, this cute-as-a-button hideaway delivers all the cottage charms you’re chasing.

And it's dog and family-friendly too, so all the troops are welcome here. 

Explore pretty nearby coastal spots like Croyde (seven-minute drive) and Woolacombe (eighteen-minute drive). And there's a thriving foodie scene to keep you well watered and fed – from Michelin-starred restaurants to good old-fashioned fish and chips – it's got it all going on.

At the same time, the gently bubbling private hot tub is perfect for post-surf soaks. 

Finally, a fully equipped kitchen is convenient for self-sufficient stays, with the award-winning Coach House brasserie on hand for those evenings when you don't feel like cooking. Alternatively, for less formal fare, eating fish and chips off your lap as you look out over the sea is hard to top. 

Northshore Lodge

Just a few metres from the River Torridge, this home is tucked down a narrow cobbled lane in the heart of postcard-pretty Appledore. It might look like a cute and cosy fisherman's cottage from the outside, but step inside and you'll find three floors of pure luxury. 

Let's start up top, where the converted attic is home to the main bedroom. Striking wooden beams adorn the ceiling, giving a rustic vibe to an otherwise modern and understated decor. Two more stylish bedrooms and a lavish family bathroom – complete with an absolutely lush claw foot, roll top bath – make up the first floor.

On the ground level, the plush lounge has a fireplace for snuggling up on chilly English evenings, while the French doors open up to a heated courtyard which is simply divine – we can't think of a better spot to while away summer evenings, sipping wine and nibbling on snacks rustled up in the glossy kitchen.

This home is perfectly positioned for adventures around North Devon. Enjoy a stroll along the river, followed by a tour of the North Devon Maritime Museum (a four-minute walk away). For lunch, try the seaside rite of passage – steaming hot fish and chips and an ice cream cone for dessert. If it's the beach you crave, drive ten minutes to Westward Ho! – a Blue Flag beach where the kids can try watersports while you pitch a parasol and relax on the golden sands.

The Elegant Estuary

Just a few metres from the beach at Instow, it won’t take you long to feel right at home in this seaside villa.

The open-plan setup is ideal for spending quality time with friends or family, whether cooking up a storm in the kitchen, sinking into the sofas or enjoying nibbles and drinks together. Folding doors lead you out onto the impressive terrace, where you can while away the hours watching the boats bobbing in the estuary. 

There’s also a second, more-compact living room, giving kids a place to chill out away from the grown-ups. It takes just a few minutes to meander down to the pubs and restaurants of Instow, and you can catch a ferry across the water to visit neighbouring Appledore during the high season. If you’d like a little more action, the nearby Tarka Trail offers fantastic cycling and walking, and the surf at Westward Ho! is fantastic for water sports. Bring your bikes and boards along, too, as there’s lockable storage for your bits and bobs here too.

Situated above White Pebble Bay and less than a mile from Ilfracombe Beach, this charming house provides a coastal escape that's perfect for families and friends.

Set over three levels, the interior provides plenty of space for quiet moments and socialising. The plush and elegant living room is the perfect setting for an evening of games or a movie night curled up with the family. Elsewhere, the sleek and modern kitchen is set up for days when you want to try your hand at that meal that’s been sitting in your recipe folder – pick up some local seafood and see where your imagination takes you. The bedrooms here are individual in style and indulgently comforting – you'll love falling into your soft sheets after a soak session in the freestanding tub. 

You’re idyllically located for walks along the South West Coastal Path, where you can soak up the sea breeze and spot local wildlife. The nearby town of Ilfracombe is famed for its sandy beaches and stunning cliffs, spend the day on the powdery sands or hop in a kayak for an afternoon on the waves.

Awaken from restful slumbers to rolling tides and a soft sea breeze at this family home, ready to explore the local Devonshire delights. With Cheyne and Hele Beach within walking distance, the hiking paths across Hillsborough Nature Preserve a short stroll away and the quaint seafront eateries in the harbour just moments away, you’re all set up for a sea-grazing retreat.

Inside, the pastel colour palette, bay windows and plush furnishings keep things feeling bright and cosy. The modern and sleek kitchen provides a perfect setting to test out those seafood dishes you’ve been pinning to your holiday board, whilst the family-style dining room is perfectly set up for the event. The living room feels like the idyllic spot to unwind after long walks in Exmoor National Park, whilst the kids can make the most of the XBox in the upstairs snug. 

Sunny days can be spent on the patio, dining and reclining in front of the rolling seaside scenery. Our idea of a perfect afternoon includes firing up the grill for a charred array of dishes, a glass of local wine and a soak in the garden’s hot tub.

House On the Cove

A ten-minute drive from the pristine shores of Devon’s Woolacombe Beach, this modern lodge is an isolated, minimalist abode that's perfect for serenity-seekers. While you can reach the town of Georgeham by taking a seven-minute stroll through the lush countryside, the home truly does feel like a world away. With spectacular green views in every direction, courtesy of the panoramic windows and floor-to-ceiling glass doors, enjoy the great outdoors even when you’re cosy inside the home. Find woven dining chairs, a plush sofa, and a cushioned headboard against your bed for when you’re relaxing indoors, as well as a bath in the en-suite for a late-night soak. But it’s the outdoor offering which we found really impressive. As well as a large, enclosed garden where you can let your pooch run wild, there are even more activities to enjoy after dusk falls on your private porch. Switch on the fairy lights for a magical evening on the soft sofa under the covered decking, then slink into the hot tub with a glass of champagne as the stars come out. This setting is simply ideal for gazing up at the night skies.

A View To Remember

If you love a beach holiday, this cute home is perfect for you. Such is the proximity to one of the beaches, you can see the lapping waves and golden sands from the privacy of your cute garden. Sitting with a cup of coffee in the morning – listening to the sound of the waves touching the shore – is the perfect way to start your day.

The home is also within walking distance of two other beaches along Woolacombe's pretty esplanade – you can take trips to all three and discover your favourite. If you're feeling peckish after swimming, numerous pubs and restaurants reside nearby in Woolacombe centre.

Whilst you're out, pick up some supplies to enjoy back at the apartment. A deluxe dining table is made for sharing plates of fish and chips, complemented by a crisp glass of something cold. 

The dining table is the centrepiece of the open-plan living room – a bright space that's lit by natural light pouring in through the floor-to-ceiling patio doors. Light, wooden flooring and a carefully designed layout help create a cosy ambiance that doesn't feel crowded. 

Upstairs, you'll find the bedrooms and bathrooms, one of which contains a bath for when you need to soothe the mind and body. Light some candles and pour in the bubble bath to truly relax before you go to bed. 

Three Beach

If you're looking for a home with plenty of history then you've come to the right place. This farmhouse was first mentioned in the Domesday Book, and is now a Grade-II listed building packed with plenty of period features. Push open the thick oak front door, and you'll find plenty of wooden beams, original crooked walls, with open fireplaces and wood-burning stoves in all of the reception rooms. The kitchen is a magnificent place to cook, with a gas-fired range and spectacular high ceiling. You'll also love flicking through the library of books and settling down in an armchair to read in perfect peace. If the weather is good, then you're spoilt with twenty-one acres of land to roam, complete with your very own pond and stream. The outdoor entertaining area is perfect for alfresco meals as you gaze out across the south-facing garden and drink in the magnificent views. Walkers will be happy to know that a public footpath goes right by the garden, so it couldn't be easier to set out on a hike from here. And, despite the rural location, there's plenty to do close by. The local pub is just a mile away if you're in need of refreshment, and Woolacombe Beach is fifteen minutes away by car, where you can breathe in the fresh sea air. And, with Exmoor National Park, Lee Bay, and Croyde all within a twenty to thirty-minute drive, you'll love exploring this lovely corner of Devon. 

Deep in the Countryside

One glance at those panoramic views and it's love at first sight. Perched just above Woolacombe Beach, if you're anything like us, you'll spend nearly every moment here on the expansive deck, watching the tide rise and fall – except when you're sunbathing on the sand or surfing the waves, of course. Wake up to the ocean vistas each morning, then following an alfresco breakfast, stroll down to the beach for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the water. End the evening with a barbecue and a glass of wine, watching as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it?

You can even make the most of the scenery inside, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that drench the entire home in natural light. Contemporary and cool, we love how the coastal colour scheme reflects the backdrop – and all the mod-cons are accounted for. The rainfall showers in the en-suite bathrooms are hotel-worthy, a high-spec kitchen stocked with culinary gear (including a wine chiller) is a dream to cook in and Netflix, Now TV, books and board games will keep you entertained on rainy days. 

Location-wise, you can follow the South West Coastal Path into Woolacombe for eateries and pubs (about a fifteen-minute walk), or head in the opposite direction and check out the views from Morte Point (twenty-five minutes away). There's also some great golfing at Saunton if you fancy a day on the fairway, while many of North Devon's gems are within driving distance.

The brainchild of a celebrated interior designer, this North Devon townhouse has got it all figured out. Located a couple of minutes’ drive from Croyde beach, where you’ll spend long days surfing and soaking up the salty sea breeze, the inside of the home is beautifully sophisticated, with subtle nautical nods—we loved the knot wallpaper and delicate fish shoal light shade. The bunks in the children’s room will be a hit with mini swashbucklers, while the pizza oven on the patio should keep big kids quiet for a while. You’ll find the pretty village of Croyde a five-minute amble down the road, offering a charming selection of tea rooms, ice cream parlours and thatched pubs. After a hearty roast dinner, retreat home to the outdoor hot tub before turning in for the night in those luxurious king-size beds.
