With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

An escape to Devon is always a good idea. Staying in this beautiful home elevates it to an excellent one. The home comprises a grand Georgian house and the original farmhouse from the 16th century. They’re joined together by a secret internal door disguised as a bookcase – it’s like an Agatha Christie novel. 

This gorgeous home can be found in north Devon, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s just a twenty-two-minute drive from Ilfracombe beach, so paddling, surfing, and strolling along the sand can all easily be added to the day’s agenda. You might find that you’re content to stay at home though – there’s enough here to keep everyone entertained for sure. 

You might begin your day with a swim in the heated swimming pool, before settling down to a hearty breakfast. There are two kitchens so cooking is a breeze here. There are also several living rooms, so you’re never short of space – ideal when travelling as a large group. 

Children will love the games room and the outdoor play area, but the jewel in the crown for them will likely be the animal closure. Meet the pygmy goats and alpacas, and admire the peacocks and ducklings. The little ones will be talking about their holiday for months to come.

It’s a delightful spot on the North Devon coast, offering easy access to beaches as well as moorland and wooded hills. Why not stop by the animal enclosures in the morning for feeding sessions with one of the fifty animals on site? 

Head inside to a triple-height drawing room, set around a wood-burning stove. The balconied landings above are home to a library-like hangout area with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and squashy sofas. The dine-in kitchen is pure farmhouse-style with a bright red Aga purring away and keeping things warm (but there’s an induction hob and regular oven if you don’t fancy cooking on the Aga). Should the weather turn, you’ve got a sunroom, looking out over the valley and guests here have access to an indoor swimming pool shared with other buildings on the farm.

It’s a six-minute drive into Combe Martin to stock up at the local supermarket or maybe pause in a local, cosy pub. Ten minutes sees you at the carpark for Combe Martin Beaches where folk take kayaks and paddleboards out on the water or stroll along the soft sand. Join the Southwest Coastal Trail, a ten-minute drive away to discover hidden bays and clifftop views for miles.

Enjoying a beautiful coastal location directly on the waterfront overlooking the river, harbour and the quaint seaside village of Lynmouth, this is a prime spot on Exmoor's National Park's north coast. You're surrounded by spectacular landscapes on all sides, with Exmoor offering an intriguing array of footpaths that blend the best of coast and country. Explore directly from the village, or hop in the car and venture further afield. Beauty spots like Tarr Steps and The Valley of the Rocks are within a fifteen-minute drive. For a complete change of scene, the surfing beaches of Croyde and Woolacombe are within forty minutes' drive. However, on blustery autumn days, you'll find local surfers descending on Lynmouth to escape the south-westerly winds that blow out the waves at other beaches.

After a refreshing morning walk – if you’re furry friend’s tagging along, you’ll have five acres of dog walking field at your disposal – stop off at home for a warm drink. Located along the riverfront above an old-fashioned gift shop, this bright and airy apartment feels like a breath of fresh sea air.
