The nearby village of Holcombe Rogus has lots of beautiful nature to explore. However, it's a great jumping-off point for trips further afield. The city of Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away if you want to spend an afternoon in a more urban environment, while day trips to the stunning beaches of the north and south coasts are well within reach, as are Exmoor and Dartmoor national parks.

You'll also be sharing your space with some beautiful flowering fruit trees, so you're more than encouraged to grab an apple in the morning when the season is right. The insides are all open-plan so that you always have the best natural light, and in the evenings, you can curl up with a good book by the wood-burning stove when the weather is chilly. Nearby, you’ll find the beginning of the Grand Union Canal, which makes for a great walk. As you can see, there's always plenty to do in the area, but you can also drive to Exeter if you're in the mood for some urban exploration.

We loved the welcome hamper – host Charles leaves bread, jam, local milk and even fresh flowers to make you feel right at home – and the delightful touches like board games and DVDs provide plenty of entertainment. Enjoy a family game night in front of the fire, curl up with a book in the cushy armchair or spend a chilled evening snuggled up with your favourite films. During the day, don your walking shoes and hit the nearby trails, then, following an afternoon of rambling, reward yourself with a well-earned pint at one of the local pubs. Or, if you'd prefer a bit more liveliness, Exeter is only a twenty-minute drive away.

Good things come to those who wait. Four hundred years ago, this cottage was a barn, but it has recently been converted to become the picturesque dwelling you'll find today. Tucked away in three acres of idyllic land, it's surrounded by wildflower meadows, rolling green hills and beautifully landscaped gardens in the heart of Devon’s glorious countryside. If you’re looking for somewhere totally private yet utterly indulgent, this is it. The interior has some grand original features (wooden beams, vaulted ceilings and a cosy wood-burner with an abundance of logs) as well as thoughtful, modern design touches (bold geometric-print cushions, sage green walls, upcycled furniture and industrial-style wall lamps). We don’t say this lightly, but a perfect night’s sleep is all but guaranteed thanks to the exceptional quality bedding (which has the same thread count as the sheets used at The Dorchester Hotel) and a cocktail or two courtesy of the honesty bar. Hic. The spectacular craggy coastline of south Devon is half an hour's drive away, while the bustling market town of Honiton takes about half that time to reach.

Head up the three-tiered garden to admire the view from atop. You'll be greeted with clear skies, the hum of the waters, and the sounds of the harbour. 

The large windows throughout the home light up the space as you play on the vintage arcade table that offers the classical Space Invaders and Pacman. Whoever gets to sleep in the Captain's Cabin bedroom gets a gorgeous view of the surrounding harbour right from the comfort of their own bed – imagine waking up next to that blissful sight every morning.

Aimed at families who like to get out into the fresh air, it's a fabulous country house in an idyllic rural setting. Right on the River Avon, it's the perfect spot for wild swimming with a rope swing and river plunge pool in the garden. Set in its own pretty grounds, the rustic farmhouse can trace its roots back to the 12th century and has plenty of character. Stone floors, oak beams and fireplaces are topped off with comfy furnishings and a lived-in, home from home feel. We love the living room with its exposed stone wall and cosy sofas around the fire. Bedrooms are all of a good size and even the bathrooms are stylish. Ideal for a large family group, you can cook meals in the country kitchen and serve them at the huge dining table, or barbecue outside on the Argentinian grill on warmer evenings. If the lure of the water has called you here, you can spend days playing in the river, or hop into the twelve-man hot tub. Head off for walks nearby or just let the kids bounce on the trampoline while you sit back with a cold beer on the sun loungers. Other add-ons include sea fishing with the host and taking time out in the log-fired sauna in the grounds. And it's just a short drive to Kingsbridge and the coast if you fancy a change of scene.

The cabin is tucked away in a lush garden in a romantic setting that will make you instantly forget any of the worries of day-to-day life. It’s a studio-style cabin with one wall entirely made of glass, blending the interior and exterior. A skylight above the bed means you’ll go to sleep each night staring straight up at the stars. 

The cabin is based just outside of Launceston in Cornwall, close to the border of Devon. It’s brilliantly located for outdoorsy adventures, whether you’re keen on surfing or prefer to explore the countryside on foot. Dartmoor National Park is twenty-seven minutes away by car, with its wealth of wonderful hikes and cycling trails. You might take a day-trip to St Isaac to paddle in the sea and eat fish and chips and ice cream at the shore – it takes forty-three minutes to drive there, and it’s well worth the trip. 

After a day of exploring Cornwall and its gems, you can look forward to sipping wine on the terrace. Perhaps you’ll cook dinner on the barbecue before enjoying a relaxing bubble bath in the beautiful copper tub. Or to take the romance to the next level, you might soak in the hot tub under the stars. It’s impossible to leave here feeling stressed out.

Through to the bedrooms, the boutique-style furnishings are colourful and mood-boosting – all the more welcome in the drizzly winter months – and each leads to its own en suite bathroom.

Make the most of this idyllic location and saunter towards the coast, reachable in just fifteen minutes. If a city experience is what you crave, drive into Cardiff proper and wind your way up to the impressive motte and bailey castle, built in medieval times. Spread out over three floors and glowing from top-to-toe in crisp white, this family retreat is a joy to return home to. Vintage memorabilia posters and zesty pops of colour perk the space up a treat, while period features and antique pieces bring all the character and charm.

Over in the first of two living rooms, butter-soft sofas placed beside the fire are more than inviting. As is the Gatsby-esque 1920's mini bar in the grown-up feel sitting room next door – playfully known as the Cocktail Room by the owners. And the shaker-style kitchen makes cooking and entertaining a joy – especially with it's handy opening out to the sitting room so that you can keep an eye on the rest of your troops.

When it's time for some coastal adventures, take a stroll down the hill towards Dartmouth's historic maritime centre (five-minute walk – a little longer when you're coming back up!), stopping at its smart shops, galleries, and boutique bistros along the way. Or for a dose of traditional seaside nostalgia, grab your nets and buckets for crabbing on the embankment before fish and chips down at the harbour's quayside – the views of the bobbing boats are delightful. And when the beach finally calls, hop in the car and you'll be on the glorious sheltered bay of Blackpool Sands in five minutes flat.

Surrounded by 64 acres of vineyards, orchards and farmland, this luxurious barn conversion puts you between the coastal beauty of the South Devon AONB and Dartmoor National Park. A fifteen-minute drive sees you at the Southwest Coast Path to discover secluded bays and white cliffs, or make the twenty-minute drive to Bantham Beach for a day on the soft sand of the classic British seaside. 

Though if you want to stay closer to home, you’ll find plenty of activities right on the estate. Gin and wine tastings are on offer and walking the grounds you’ll come face to face with white-faced Dartmoor sheep and red Devon cattle. Should the weather turn, you’ve got a private indoor swimming pool and a dedicated cinema room with plush red theatre chairs and a big screen to keep you entertained. Swap the bucolic countryside for the seaside with a thirty-minute drive to the Jurassic Coast. In the evenings, we can’t think of anywhere better than back at home in the open-plan living room with a cocktail from the honesty bar. Throw another log on the fire, and relax.

The open-plan living space maximises the views, and there's a further sitting room and family room. Upstairs, two of the king-size bedrooms (one en suite) have private balconies. The third bedroom is styled for a soothing sleep and a refreshing start.

Keeping It Kingswear

Perched on the seafront in Lyme Regis, this second-floor apartment offers postcard-worthy panoramas that won't disappoint. Sit back, relax, and watch the tide roll in from the leather armchairs – thanks to the large windows, the scenery is always front and centre. Even better is the small balcony, the perfect spot for a glass of wine as the sun goes down. The apartment is a great size for two, though a third guest could be accommodated on a sofa bed with prior notice. And the location? You can't beat it. A steep passageway leads directly to the beach, putting the saltwater and single shore right on your doorstep.
