This place had us on those sweeping countryside views alone – it’s just green paddocks and rolling valleys for as far as the eye can see. And that was before we’d even noticed that suntrap terrace with hot tub.

Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. Splash about in the heated indoor pool. Let little ones burn off steam in the impressive play area (or indoor soft play and games room should the weather turn). Meet the estate’s farm animals (over fifty and counting) at feeding time. Grab yourself some ‘me time’ with an onsite yoga or aqua aerobics class. Or head off on an adventure with furry friends through the gardens, sunken lanes, meadows, and streams (perfect for little dam-builders) – there are sixteen acres to explore here.

When thoughts turn to food, pick your own at the estate’s kitchen garden and greenhouse then rustle up a bite to eat at home. Or grab something from the onsite honesty shop, stocked with frozen meals, BBQ packs from the local farm shop, and lashings of ice cream. Then all that’s left to do is put your feet up and hunker down at home. With its four-poster beds and flagstone flooring, this cute-as-a-button hideaway delivers all the cottage charms you’re chasing.

Moments from the harbour, the historic Chapel of St Nicholas and Capstone Hill, this modern apartment is surrounded by beautiful sights. Set in the seaside town of Ilfracombe, the home is close to several beaches, including Tunnels Beaches – a series of sheltered bays and a Victorian tidal bathing pool found through a series of tunnels. For surfers, Croyde and Woolacombe are a short drive away, while daredevils can try their hand at activities such as coasteering. North Devon's coast is also on full display from the apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean – keep eyes peeled for wildlife such as porpoises, seals and oystercatchers and enjoy alfresco breakfasts on the balcony. With a central location in the town, the home is not far from shops if you're cooking, or there are plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance if you fancy a night off. Stretch your legs by following The South West Coast Path which leads past the apartment and through cliffs and dramatic coastline or jump in the car for some light entertainment at Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park.

Rejuvenate with sea views and fresh country air at this Grade II listed farmhouse nestled on the outskirts of postcard-pretty Berrynarbor and just a seven-minute drive from the coast.

Having served the surrounding Devon farmland for hundreds of years, this traditional stone and slate barn has experienced quite a transformation in recent times, with a spectacular mezzanine bringing all the wow factor.

In winter months, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) or get together around the dining table. It’s an atmospheric place to spend many an evening with the lofty wooden beams overhead. 

When the sun shines, head out into the pretty garden to soak up those sea vistas from the raised terrace as you fire up the barbecue. There’s heaps of space for kids to run amuck on the lawns leading down to a babbling stream. And be sure to seek out the hammock squirreled away in the trees – it’s got your name all over it.

When it’s time to get up and at ’em, nip into Berrynarbor with its characterful pubs and inns (just an eight-minute drive) and Ilfracombe with its beautiful fishing harbour (a ten-minute drive). Or ditch the car and pick up the coastal bridle path leading down to Hele with its tiny cove – it’s as idyllic as it sounds.

With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

An escape to Devon is always a good idea. Staying in this beautiful home elevates it to an excellent one. The home comprises a grand Georgian house and the original farmhouse from the 16th century. They’re joined together by a secret internal door disguised as a bookcase – it’s like an Agatha Christie novel. 

This gorgeous home can be found in north Devon, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s just a twenty-two-minute drive from Ilfracombe beach, so paddling, surfing, and strolling along the sand can all easily be added to the day’s agenda. You might find that you’re content to stay at home though – there’s enough here to keep everyone entertained for sure. 

You might begin your day with a swim in the heated swimming pool, before settling down to a hearty breakfast. There are two kitchens so cooking is a breeze here. There are also several living rooms, so you’re never short of space – ideal when travelling as a large group. 

Children will love the games room and the outdoor play area, but the jewel in the crown for them will likely be the animal closure. Meet the pygmy goats and alpacas, and admire the peacocks and ducklings. The little ones will be talking about their holiday for months to come.

You’ve got a hot tub and plenty of sun loungers on the deck to soak up the Devon sun. There’s dining for the group, too, courtesy of the barbecue, and a chiminea can keep things warm after the sun goes down. From the deck, you’ve got stunning views of Coulscott’s Valley. Within the grounds, you’ve also got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and outdoor area play area for the kids. Why not stop by the animal enclosures in the morning for feeding sessions with one of the fifty animals on site? 

Head inside to a triple-height drawing room, set around a wood-burning stove. The balconied landings above are home to a library-like hangout area with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and squashy sofas. The dine-in kitchen is pure farmhouse-style with a bright red Aga purring away and keeping things warm (but there’s an induction hob and regular oven if you don’t fancy cooking on the Aga). Should the weather turn, you’ve got a sunroom, looking out over the valley and guests here have access to an indoor swimming pool shared with other buildings on the farm.

It’s a six-minute drive into Combe Martin to stock up at the local supermarket or maybe pause in a local, cosy pub. Ten minutes sees you at the carpark for Combe Martin Beaches where folk take kayaks and paddleboards out on the water or stroll along the soft sand. Join the Southwest Coastal Trail, a ten-minute drive away to discover hidden bays and clifftop views for miles.

This detached stone cottage is one of seven homes on an estate on the North Devon coast. Ideal for families, the resort boasts a two-storey Wendy House, a pirate ship climbing frame, and a soft-play area for under-fives. There’s also a games room and a heated indoor pool – there’s something for everyone. The cottage is cosy and welcoming, though the steep spiral staircase won’t be for everyone. It’s also worth pointing out that there are over fifty animals on the grounds – you won’t be up close to them unless you choose to be, but you might hear them every now and then.

The home is also within walking distance of two other beaches along Woolacombe's pretty esplanade – you can take trips to all three and discover your favourite. If you're feeling peckish after swimming, numerous pubs and restaurants reside nearby in Woolacombe centre.

Whilst you're out, pick up some supplies to enjoy back at the apartment. A deluxe dining table is made for sharing plates of fish and chips, complemented by a crisp glass of something cold. 

The dining table is the centrepiece of the open-plan living room – a bright space that's lit by natural light pouring in through the floor-to-ceiling patio doors. Light, wooden flooring and a carefully designed layout help create a cosy ambiance that doesn't feel crowded. 

Upstairs, you'll find the bedrooms and bathrooms, one of which contains a bath for when you need to soothe the mind and body. Light some candles and pour in the bubble bath to truly relax before you go to bed.

Wake up to the ocean vistas each morning, then following an alfresco breakfast, stroll down to the beach for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the water. End the evening with a barbecue and a glass of wine, watching as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it?

The rainfall showers in the en-suite bathrooms are hotel-worthy, a high-spec kitchen stocked with culinary gear (including a wine chiller) is a dream to cook in and Netflix, Now TV, books and board games will keep you entertained on rainy days. 

Location-wise, you can follow the South West Coastal Path into Woolacombe for eateries and pubs (about a fifteen-minute walk), or head in the opposite direction and check out the views from Morte Point (twenty-five minutes away). There's also some great golfing at Saunton if you fancy a day on the fairway, while many of North Devon's gems are within driving distance.

While there are options to suit all tastes, enthusiastically tucking into an authentic Sri Lankan curry at nearby Barricane Beach is a sunset experience that's hard to top.

There's little reason to venture far for sun, sea and surf unless you're sheltering from south-westerlies at  Putsborough or seeking out the occasionally heavy beach break at Croyde. However, keen golfers might like to test their mettle on the challenging links course at Saunton Golf Club, while landscape lovers should take the opportunity to explore the wilds of Exmoor's western edge, both within a half-hour drive.
