Set in the seaside town of Ilfracombe, the home is close to several beaches, including Tunnels Beaches – a series of sheltered bays and a Victorian tidal bathing pool found through a series of tunnels. For surfers, Croyde and Woolacombe are a short drive away, while daredevils can try their hand at activities such as coasteering. North Devon's coast is also on full display from the apartment with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean – keep eyes peeled for wildlife such as porpoises, seals and oystercatchers and enjoy alfresco breakfasts on the balcony. With a central location in the town, the home is not far from shops if you're cooking, or there are plenty of restaurants and bars within walking distance if you fancy a night off. With features dating back to the sixteenth century, a stay at this former farmhouse epitomises a Devon country retreat. Within the grounds, you’ve got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and playparks aplenty for the kids. Feeding sessions at the animal enclosures take place in the morning where you can get close to the alpacas, piglets and pygmy goats. And there’s an honesty shop onsite too, selling delights like eggs straight from the farm, home-cooked ready meals and barbecue meat packs. If you want to explore the wider area, Combe Martin is a five-minute drive away with a couple of local pubs and a supermarket, and Combe Martin’s beach is just a ten-minute drive.

The home itself dated back to the sixteenth century and you can feel this history in the old beams, minstrel’s gallery above the living room and listed staircase inside. Decor touches like an old spinning wheel, suspended aviary and antique writer’s bureau bring that old-world feel back into the bones of the home and the living room is set around a traditional old stove set in stonework. The huge kitchen is designed farmhouse-style with a big range cooker and island in the centre surrounded by high chairs. The master bedroom features a carved four-posted bed and each bedroom is decorated with antique darkwoork furniture and Victoriana accents. 

Outside a delightful surprise awaits. A bubbling hot tub overlooks the gardens and out to the rolling hills beyond. There’s also dining for the group on the patio, courtesy of a barbecue and perhaps a hamper of locally-sourced meat from the honesty shop onsite.

This place had us on those sweeping countryside views alone – it’s just green paddocks and rolling valleys for as far as the eye can see. And that was before we’d even noticed that suntrap terrace with hot tub.

Set on a private estate made up of seven holiday cottages and a mere ten-minute drive from some of North Devon’s most picturesque sandy bays, it’s got family holiday written all over it. Splash about in the heated indoor pool. Let little ones burn off steam in the impressive play area (or indoor soft play and games room should the weather turn). Meet the estate’s farm animals (over fifty and counting) at feeding time. Grab yourself some ‘me time’ with an onsite yoga or aqua aerobics class. Or head off on an adventure with furry friends through the gardens, sunken lanes, meadows, and streams (perfect for little dam-builders) – there are sixteen acres to explore here.

When thoughts turn to food, pick your own at the estate’s kitchen garden and greenhouse then rustle up a bite to eat at home. Or grab something from the onsite honesty shop, stocked with frozen meals, BBQ packs from the local farm shop, and lashings of ice cream. Then all that’s left to do is put your feet up and hunker down at home. Rejuvenate with sea views and fresh country air at this Grade II listed farmhouse nestled on the outskirts of postcard-pretty Berrynarbor and just a seven-minute drive from the coast.

Having served the surrounding Devon farmland for hundreds of years, this traditional stone and slate barn has experienced quite a transformation in recent times, with a spectacular mezzanine bringing all the wow factor.

In winter months, snuggle up by the wood-burning stove (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty too) or get together around the dining table. It’s an atmospheric place to spend many an evening with the lofty wooden beams overhead. 

When the sun shines, head out into the pretty garden to soak up those sea vistas from the raised terrace as you fire up the barbecue. There’s heaps of space for kids to run amuck on the lawns leading down to a babbling stream. And be sure to seek out the hammock squirreled away in the trees – it’s got your name all over it.

When it’s time to get up and at ’em, nip into Berrynarbor with its characterful pubs and inns (just an eight-minute drive) and Ilfracombe with its beautiful fishing harbour (a ten-minute drive). Or ditch the car and pick up the coastal bridle path leading down to Hele with its tiny cove – it’s as idyllic as it sounds.

An escape to Devon is always a good idea. Staying in this beautiful home elevates it to an excellent one. The home comprises a grand Georgian house and the original farmhouse from the 16th century. They’re joined together by a secret internal door disguised as a bookcase – it’s like an Agatha Christie novel. 

This gorgeous home can be found in north Devon, tucked away amid rolling countryside. It’s just a twenty-two-minute drive from Ilfracombe beach, so paddling, surfing, and strolling along the sand can all easily be added to the day’s agenda. You might find that you’re content to stay at home though – there’s enough here to keep everyone entertained for sure. 

You might begin your day with a swim in the heated swimming pool, before settling down to a hearty breakfast. There are two kitchens so cooking is a breeze here. There are also several living rooms, so you’re never short of space – ideal when travelling as a large group. 

Children will love the games room and the outdoor play area, but the jewel in the crown for them will likely be the animal closure. Meet the pygmy goats and alpacas, and admire the peacocks and ducklings. The little ones will be talking about their holiday for months to come.

The pièce de résistance is the gravity-defying fireplace in the living area, nothing short of a showstopper. You'll want to explore every room in depth to make sure you haven't missed anything. This is a level of design you might not necessarily expect from a sleepy part of coastal Devon – but that's part of the home's beauty. It's the perfect retreat for those seeking total tranquility in exceptional surroundings. 

The Early Risers

Tucked out of the way on a quiet road in the North Devon village of West Down, this charming terraced cottage has everything you need for a couples retreat or small family getaway in the countryside. Gain entry via the porch on a pedestrian walkway before opening up the stable door to the open-plan kitchen/dining/living room featuring a log burner, comfy sofa and space under the central staircase for a dog bed – setting everything up perfectly for a cosy evening. On the other side of the stairs are your dining space and small but perfectly formed kitchen. Head upstairs, and behind the solid oak door, you'll uncover a lovely bedroom with exposed beams and soothing neutral decor. Across the hallway is a modern bathroom with a 3/4-size compact bath and an additional bedroom that's set up for children. The cottage is well located for guests to access the two-mile stretch of golden sand at Woolacombe that runs down to Putsborough, around a fifteen-minute drive away. The beach backs onto a small town with everything surfers and beach lovers could need to stock up on before taking to the surf.

The private parking will be handy for bucket-and-spade days along the South West Coast. Or keep things local – Ilfracombe’s historic Tunnels Beaches, quaint harbour, and bustling independent shops and restaurants are just a short stroll away.

Once the shelter of livestock and haybales, this old farm barn has been converted into a luxury spot for a big family or group of friends. You’ve got a hot tub and plenty of sun loungers on the deck to soak up the Devon sun. There’s dining for the group, too, courtesy of the barbecue, and a chiminea can keep things warm after the sun goes down. From the deck, you’ve got stunning views of Coulscott’s Valley. Within the grounds, you’ve also got a shared indoor swimming pool, games room and outdoor area play area for the kids. Why not stop by the animal enclosures in the morning for feeding sessions with one of the fifty animals on site? 

Head inside to a triple-height drawing room, set around a wood-burning stove. The balconied landings above are home to a library-like hangout area with floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and squashy sofas. The dine-in kitchen is pure farmhouse-style with a bright red Aga purring away and keeping things warm (but there’s an induction hob and regular oven if you don’t fancy cooking on the Aga). Should the weather turn, you’ve got a sunroom, looking out over the valley and guests here have access to an indoor swimming pool shared with other buildings on the farm.

It’s a six-minute drive into Combe Martin to stock up at the local supermarket or maybe pause in a local, cosy pub. Ten minutes sees you at the carpark for Combe Martin Beaches where folk take kayaks and paddleboards out on the water or stroll along the soft sand. Join the Southwest Coastal Trail, a ten-minute drive away to discover hidden bays and clifftop views for miles.

Wake up to the ocean vistas each morning, then following an alfresco breakfast, stroll down to the beach for an afternoon picnic and a dip in the water. End the evening with a barbecue and a glass of wine, watching as the sun slowly sinks below the horizon. Sounds heavenly, doesn't it?

You can even make the most of the scenery inside, thanks to the floor-to-ceiling sliding doors that drench the entire home in natural light. Contemporary and cool, we love how the coastal colour scheme reflects the backdrop – and all the mod-cons are accounted for. Location-wise, you can follow the South West Coastal Path into Woolacombe for eateries and pubs (about a fifteen-minute walk), or head in the opposite direction and check out the views from Morte Point (twenty-five minutes away). There's also some great golfing at Saunton if you fancy a day on the fairway, while many of North Devon's gems are within driving distance.

Jump in the car and delve deeper into historic Exmoor countryside with a visit to the Tarr Steps, said to date back to the Bronze Age, or follow one of the many hiking trails that traverse the national park. Croyde and Ilfracombe beaches are a twenty-minute drive from home as are Lynton and Lynmouth, where you will find a unique cliff railway.

Walk up to ‘The Lookout’, a pinnacle from where the deep green of the countryside is laid out for you to admire. After a refreshing morning walk – if you’re furry friend’s tagging along, you’ll have five acres of dog walking field at your disposal – stop off at home for a warm drink. Kindle a fire in the lounge and sink back in the velvet sofa, grateful for little things like the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the crackle of burning wood. 

With views of the beautiful garden on offer from the patio, you’ll likely find your way into the private hot tub at some point – spend as long as you need until you’ve let go of all tension, but don’t forget to make it in time for feeding time. With over fifty types of animals, including pygmy goats and hand-reared lambs, you’re not going to want to miss it. 

The estate also has an extensive kitchen garden and greenhouse open to their guests. Pick something to use in an alfresco lunch or when you’re trying something new for dinner, or simply get a private chef in to do all the cooking for you. After a long day, watch the sun dip below the horizon from your sunlounger before grabbing a packet of marshmallows from the honesty shop and heading to the shared fire pit. Roast marshmallows, stargaze, and meet new friends around the dancing flames and when the day’s activities catch up with you, duck out to retreat to the comfort of the plush double bed – but not without indulging in a steaming bubble bath.

This charming home is part of a lighthouse site, having been renovated from a former lighthouse keeper’s cottage. It’s just outside of the pretty village of Mortehoe in North Devon, where you’ll find pubs and restaurants. Woolacombe and its Blue Flag sandy beach is also just a ten-minute drive away. The cottage is in an ideal spot for bird watching, and there are plenty of walks to enjoy nearby. The house itself is cosy and comfortable, with everything you might need for a short stay by the sea.

Wake up to the idyllic sound of paddling ducks and gently rippling water at this luxurious lodge. Combining boutique style and a stunning countryside setting, it's ideal for couples and families. With sea views from every angle, this hillside home is the perfect base for beach babies. Bookended by Woolacombe and Mortehoe, you'll be within walking distance from some of Devon's best stretches of sand. Surfers will want to try the waves at Woolacombe beach below, while more sheltered bathing can be found in the coves of Combesgate and Barricane beaches. 

In the evenings, sit out on the patio and watch the sun set over the sea with a glass of something nice. On chillier nights, curl up by the wood-burning stove in the cosy lounge as the wind picks up outside. The modern kitchen has all the facilities needed for rustling up a feast, though it's hard to resist the fish and chip shop found a ten-minute walk away. For more formal meals – or for a few cocktails in town – Woolacombe has several restaurants and bars, or the larger town of Barnstaple is a twenty-minute drive away. The South West Coast Path runs past the house so join it to walk through magnificent rock formations and striking cliffs above. Our recommendation? Lundy Island – famous for its puffins – can be seen from the house and makes for a great day trip, with ferries leaving from Ilfracombe and Bideford.

Speaking of the tide, spend a day on the sands of Grunta Beach, or visit Woolacombe, where you can try your hand at surfing and paddleboarding. There are endless hiking trails in the area too, so pull on your walking boots and set about this AONB’s abundant surroundings.

After a day spent on the beach, you can take a soak in the bathtub before settling down for an evening in the garden. Perhaps you’ll tuck into fish and chips while watching the windsurfers dance in front of the sunset.
