An elegant apartment by the sea, this home in Swanage is just a few minutes' walk from the seafront. Set in an attractive Victorian building, it's a perfect retreat for a couple or a solo traveller, and with its period features and Boho styling, it's bound to appeal to the romantic in you. 

Tall ceilings, sash windows, oak floorboards and chandeliers are the order of the day here, along with all-white decor and pops of colourful modern art. There's a squashy sofa in the cosy living room, and a well-kitted-out, modern kitchen if you'll be cooking at home. But it's the bedroom we really love here, with its vintage rattan headboard and French vintage furniture.

The location is perfect for exploring on foot – pubs, eateries, shops, and seaside walks are within easy reach. Back home, you'll find five comfortable bedrooms, though some have limited headroom due to sloped ceilings. The bathrooms are also a tad snug for taller guests. That said, there's a bright first-floor living area where everyone can chill out together, as well as a ground-floor main suite with its own small patio. Two pups are also welcome to tag along – now that's coastal fun for the whole family.

The size is perfect for a couple – and with a private suntrap terrace and some characterful period features inside, we’ll forgive the slightly dated interiors. Make for the sands of Swanage Beach and the pier (less than half a mile from your door) for a hefty dose of seaside nostalgia. And when thoughts turn to food, there are plenty of bustling cafes and restaurants dotted along the high street.

Speaking of, the beach is a five-minute stroll away, the shops and eateries in town are walkable in fifteen, and many of Dorset's other gems are within easy reach by car.

Stood within the grounds of a working lighthouse and surrounded by a country park and the vast sea, this cottage delivers quite a setting. Arrive at night, and the lighthouse's beam will guide you in. Although you'll be pleased to hear the fog signal is long gone –⁠ so nothing could disturb your sleep here. A home for all seasons, enjoy the summer sun on the nearby beaches or snuggle up beside the fire to witness dramatic storms in winter months. Set off the beaten track –⁠ no amenities are within walking distance, so you'll need a car. But with Swanage town centre just two miles away, the bustle is never too far away.

Stood within the grounds of a working lighthouse, the setting of this traditional cottage is postcard-perfect. While the fog signal is long gone, the beam of this lighthouse still shines bright at night – an impressive sight to see while stargazing from the shared gardens. It’s worth noting that with nothing but the deep blue sea and a country park for miles around, you’ll need a car here. Though if you fancy a change of scene, the seaside town of Swanage is just a three-mile drive away.

Where do we start with this home – both the apartment and the location are excellent. Firstly, it’s just a 50-metre stroll across West Cliff Green to the beach steps making this the perfect base for a family-friendly holiday by the sea. There are an array of restaurants and bars within walking distance whilst Bournemouth Pier and the town centre are also accessible by foot. We love the sea views from this place’s private garden and who wouldn’t want to dine or relax in the light-filled conservatory? If you’re a group of eight, then two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living space, but it’s a spacious room. What a great find this is.

Dorset Paradise

There are sea views to enjoy from this second-floor apartment housed in a Grade II listed building. There’s no lift here, but it’s worth the climb. This home is ideal for a couple and their four-legged companions. The beach is just a short walk away so it’s perfect for seaside strolls. And there are many shops, restaurants and bars right on your doorstep (you may hear some street noise here). Or if you fancy exploring further afield, visit the Jurassic Coast or the historic village of Corfe Castle.

With plenty of space to spread out, this ground-floor apartment in an Edwardian home near Westbourne is a fantastic base to return to after a day at the beach. Having a private entrance and garden ensures you have all the privacy you need here, plus private parking is a real premium in this area during the summer months. Although there's room for six, we think the main bedroom is better suited to two adults and two children, while the second bedroom is ideal if you're travelling with another couple. When it's time to explore, you'll find the beautiful sandy beach of Alum Chine just 350 metres away, whilst a 15-minute walk will get you to the eclectic mix of boutiques, cafes and bars of Westbourne and its beautiful Victorian arcade.

Nestled in the beautiful maritime surroundings of Poole Quay, this home is a real gem in a corner of England that is often overlooked for popular seaside destinations such as Cornwall and Devon. Situated on the fourth floor, this stylish apartment boasts stunning 180° panoramic views over Visitors Marina, Brownsea Island and Purbecks beyond. Whether you're watching the sunrise or waiting for it to set, you'll absolutely love spending time on the balcony here. Make yourself a cream tea and a cuppa and watch the boats come in and out of the quay. Take in the sound of seagulls passing by and feel the sea breeze on your skin.

One of the best things about this home is its proximity to southeast beaches. Sandbanks is the pick of the bunch, and it only takes sixteen-minutes by car. When you're feeling hungry, there are a lot of great places to discover within walking distance. Take a four-minute scenic stroll along the harbour to Quayside, where you'll find a variety of restaurants, pubs and wine bars. You can't come here and not sample the fish & chips either! We recommend the fourteen-minute walk to Lakeside Fish & Chips for some hearty, traditional grub.

If the view of the sea from this beachy Bournemouth home doesn’t grab you, then perhaps the ten-minute stroll to the beach and promenade will. It’s also a short walk from the town centre, where you’ll find seafood restaurants, shopping streets and beachside cafés galore. The entire ground floor is dedicated to open-plan living and socialising in a light and breezy fashion. Driftwood sculptures and duck-egg accents complement the otherwise pristine white design. Just steps from Charminster High Street, this ground floor flat is brimming with Victorian character. It's a lovely red-brick townhouse, with plenty of historic charm to admire – think high ceilings and picture rails, ornamental ceiling roses, tall skirting boards and large bay windows flooding the rooms with light. Though it's on the smaller side, it's been well-designed to maximise the space – we think it's perfectly suited to a couple after a romantic escape. Read the morning paper in the plush armchair, help yourself to a selection of cereals and teas at the rustic breakfast bar or unwind after a busy day with a movie night in the cosy living room. The kitchenette is more suited to light bites than extravagant meals, so in the evenings you may want to dine out – there's an array of cafes, pubs and restaurants in Charminster to choose from. Bournemouth town centre and its sandy beaches are a twenty-five-minute walk (though we recommend driving), or venture a little further and enjoy a trip to the Jurassic Coast, famous for its fossils – you can be there in under an hour.

Beach days are a short walk away, with the long stretch of sand at Shore Road Beach a six-minute stroll away, so you can pop back home if you’ve forgotten the sunscreen. Your proximity to the sea is on display in the master bedroom, with views out over the ocean from a wall of windows. Out the back, you’ll find a balcony for sunbathing and a ground-level terrace is set up for barbecues in the evening. But it’s the ultra-plush living room in dove-grey and dusky pink velvet that really caught our eye. A long fireplace runs the length of the wall, reminiscent of a mid-century entertainers pad in luxe LA. Floor the ceiling windows let in plenty of seaside sunshine, and Poole’s myriad seafood restaurants and ocean-side bars are at your fingertips here.

This Southbourne home is a bit special. The beach is just a short walk away, which also means you can enjoy wonderful views here – there are 180-degree panoramas of the Isle of Wight, Sandbanks, and Swanage, which can be enjoyed from the balcony.
