We should also mention the actual outdoors space at this point, too. Step out the back door and you'll find a patio with alfresco seating and a barbecue, which will both come into their own on summer evenings. This overarching theme feels apt given the beautiful countryside within easy reach of the property. The charming Fairy Sanctuary attraction at Northwood Trail is only eighteen minutes away on foot, while the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty takes about the same amount of time in the car. If you fancy a day in town, however, the centre of York is only a twenty-five-minute drive.

Arriving at the house, you’re greeted with a freshly-baked cake and all the essentials for a cuppa. You can then snuggle up on one of the sofas in front of the wood-burning stove, or if it’s sunny sit out on the bistro seating in the private south-facing courtyard. In the bedroom, it's all about the finer details with an Egyptian cotton towel for each guest, pocket sprung mattresses, and original fireplaces adding a touch of Georgian charm. 

The basement was once a pub cellar and has been transformed into a private, cosy cinema room and small games room with foosball. It is the ideal spot to wind down in the evening along with Netflix and a library of books.

Located just ten minutes' walk from the centre of York, this address is comprised of two townhouses on a quiet residential street. Given that they're neighbouring properties, it will probably come as no surprise to learn that the layouts of both homes are pretty similar and they have been styled in a complementary fashion too, with wooden floors, traditional furnishings and walls painted in muted colours.

There are plenty of welcome extras to discover, too. South-facing terraces with seating can be found outside the back door of each home. If it's a rainy afternoon, there's a basement in one of the houses that has a home cinema set-up, a foosball table and a large selection of board games. Upstairs, the Japanese-style soaking tub provides an altogether more relaxing option.

Although York's historic attractions in the centre of the city are easily reachable on foot, there are plenty more distractions even closer by. Bishopthorpe Road — affectionately known to locals as Bishy Road — awaits at the end of the street and is packed with great restaurants, cafes, bars and pubs. Despite these prominent period features, the bulk of the interior is actually quite modern, with cleansingly white walls, en vogue wooden floorboards and a sleek white kitchen. It's a lovely place to return to after a day of learning about the city's interesting past. If there's a slightly sweet smell lingering in the air around this home, it's because for many years this site was the Rowntrees factory. Specifically, the building this home is part of is the former cocoa warehouse on the wharf. Recently converted, and still so new it practically sparkles, it's a fabulous little base for a couple or a solo traveller. The name of the game here is practicality and comfort, so while it's not exactly huge, it is perfectly formed. We love the arched window and the exposed brick wall it sits within. There's a comfy, wall-mounted Murphy bed, a seating area and a modern shower room, while the smart kitchen even finds room for a dining table. Step outside and you're on the riverside, just a five-minute stroll from the city centre, The Shambles and many of York's biggest attractions.
