Just a few hundred metres from the centre of York – with stunning views of the magnificent York Minster cathedral from your sixth-floor vantage point – this sleek and contemporary apartment is ideal for a couple of friends or a family to discover the history of this vibrant festival city. Sunlight streams into the open-plan living room and kitchen through floor-to-ceiling sliding windows that open up so you can enjoy a fresh breeze without leaving the flat. The kitchen is equipped with high-end appliances with an island/breakfast bar that separates the rest of the room. The beautiful hardwood floors lead you through to the two generously sized bedrooms. The master room boasts its own en-suite complete with underfloor heating and a walk-in shower. Head downstairs and out onto the characterful cobbles, just a few minutes from the medieval city walls and approximately a ten-minute walk from the renowned Bettys Café Tea Rooms.

If there's a slightly sweet smell lingering in the air around this home, it's because for many years this site was the Rowntrees factory. Specifically, the building this home is part of is the former cocoa warehouse on the wharf. Recently converted, and still so new it practically sparkles, it's a fabulous little base for a couple or a solo traveller. The name of the game here is practicality and comfort, so while it's not exactly huge, it is perfectly formed. We love the arched window and the exposed brick wall it sits within. There's a comfy, wall-mounted Murphy bed, a seating area and a modern shower room, while the smart kitchen even finds room for a dining table. Step outside and you're on the riverside, just a five-minute stroll from the city centre, The Shambles and many of York's biggest attractions.

Little Box of Chocolates

Nestled between the North York Moors and Yorkshire Coast, this home offers up the best of both worlds. With a charming farmhouse style running throughout, this is a homely retreat for up to six people. You won’t even need to leave your four-legged friends behind as they’re welcome here too – just bear in mind the garden’s not fenced and there’s livestock about. Locally, a visit to Castle Howard Estate is a must, not least because with a stay here, you get complimentary passes and a voucher to use in the farm shop – just don’t forget to check the seasonal opening hours before your stay. 

Serenity Song

Expertly renovated, this former piggery is anything but a pigsty. The interiors are bright, contemporary and poised. A trendy white and grey colour scheme is beautifully livened up with botanical flourishes and earthy green tones, particularly in the bedroom. Take advantage of balmy afternoons with a late lunch on your private courtyard – accompany your spread with local produce from the farm shop just around the corner. After a strong cup of tea and a hunk of sticky parkin, strap on your walking shoes and explore the endless bridleways and trails of the Howardian Hills that surround your home. If you’re keen to explore further afield, an hour’s drive places you at the coast – take your pick between sunny Scarborough and quirky Whitby. When it’s time to call it a day, just before you arrive home to your comfortable king-size bed, make a pit stop in nearby Malton for hearty northern grub – it’s not called Yorkshire’s Food Capital for nothing.

The Old Piggery

This beautifully intimate cottage is a delightful countryside retreat. When you peek out of your low cottage windows at the sunrise, you’re never far away from rolling green views. Enjoy a slow morning with a cuppa in bed, or venture into York for a spot of brunch, which is a mere ten-minute drive away. Downstairs is delightfully cosy. After a day in the fresh air, pop your feet up with a glass of wine and listen to the crackle of your log burner as it warms your feet. 

Perfect for a couple's break, this home is bright and contemporary whilst still maintaining all the quaint delights you would expect from a countryside cottage. Take a stroll out of your gated community to become acquainted with the local wildlife and livestock. This is what dreams are made of, something you’ll realise as you enjoy the peace and quiet that such a setting surrounded by nature provides. 

For the lighter summer evenings, wander onto your outdoor patio to watch the sunset and for those cooler winter nights, sink into the sofa for a well-deserved movie night. This little red brick wonder is good for the soul! The meticulous touches are noticeable throughout and will make your break away just that little more special. 


Down At The Farm

Modern, colourful and supremely comfortable, this apartment on the west side of the River Ouse is an excellent base from which to explore the best of York. After a cup of Yorkshire tea and a hunk of local Moggy cake, pull on your comfiest shoes and hit the streets. The famous Jorvik Viking Centre and medieval Shambles are less than a fifteen-minute walk from your doorstep. Enjoy a mosey around York Minster, reached in twelve minutes, then stroll around the peaceful Museum Gardens. When you’re ready for something to eat, Micklegate, with its selection of bars and restaurants, is just footsteps away.

A recently converted landmark building within two minutes' walk of York Minster, the period exterior of this place doesn't give away the sleek, modern apartment inside. Offering all the comforts of home, you'll feel like a local in no time. With everything so new it's practically sparkling, you'll have a sociable, open-plan living space with a comfy sofa and a smart dining table, along with a high-spec contemporary kitchen area with all the kit you'll need to cook at home. Both bedrooms are stylish and each has a dedicated bathroom so there won't be any need to queue for the shower in the morning. Little luxuries include welcome treats, underfloor heating in the bathrooms and a funky remote control backlight behind the TV – to set the mood for the evening. The location couldn't be better either, with a walk of fewer than ten minutes into the city centre.

Month of Sundays

This charming two-bedroom home is set in a central part of York – down the street from a host of wonderful coffee shops and just a ten-minute stroll along the city walls to the heart of town. If you’re hoping to catch a race at the famed York Racecourse, it’s just a fifteen-minute walk away, while the medieval shopping streets of The Shambles are a thirteen-minute walk from home. When you return back, you’ll find a bright and welcoming environment with plenty of natural light to complement the blonde hardwood floors. Unwind in front of the log burner when it’s chilly, or out in the sun on the back terrace in finer weather. Sizzle dinner on the barbecue as you lounge in the fresh air, or else slip through the garden doors back into the kitchen and start preparing a feast to enjoy at the modern dining table. Bootham Bliss

Located within the Castle Howard Estate, this 18th-century stone farmhouse is the perfect setting for a restorative retreat. Sun Cottage

Original sash windows, ornate fireplaces, and freshly cut flowers fill this period townhouse perched just a ten-minute walk from York's historic centre. As pretty as a picture inside and out, this is a home you'll happily retreat to after days exploring the medieval streets. When the sun shines, head on outside into the suntrap, walled garden – if you time it right, you'll see the hydrangeas in all their pink glory. And on winter nights, flex your culinary skills in the made-for-action kitchen, then come together in the atmospheric dining room to host a glamorous dinner party. When it's time to put your feet up, the separate reception room has sumptuous sofas beside a fireplace to sink right in. And up the grand flight of stairs, you'll find three serene bedrooms of elegant design and lofty proportions. Beyond this luxurious home, you'll find many of the city's historical hotspots close by, including York Minister (fifteen minutes on foot) and the vibrant Shambles Market (nineteen minutes on foot). Located right by the magnificent York Minster, this 18th-century townhouse enjoys a quiet yet central location. Families and friends alike will settle right in here and pets are welcome to join you, but thanks to its many stairs, low windows and trip hazards, young children will need supervision at all times. There is space to sit out with a drink or an alfresco meal in the small courtyard garden – this is overlooked by surrounding buildings and may not feel fully private. Self-check-in makes arrival easy and convenient, though the nearest parking spot is a short walk away. We think the best way to explore the area is on foot though, so having a car here isn't a necessity.
