Once a place to rest up horses in days gone by, this stone building has since been converted into a holiday home for those visiting the East Riding of Yorkshire.

The redesign is smart and simple, if a little cookie-cutter in scope. The white walls and grey wooden floor lend a sense of brightness, while the blue corner kitchen is both well-equipped and decently sized for when you're in the mood to flex your culinary muscles. When it comes to the rest of the living quarters, we don't have any complaints, nor are we singing its praises from the highest rooftops either.

Perhaps we are being too negative, so we'll highlight two big perks. The first is the pretty Mediterranean-style courtyard centred around a 200-year-old olive tree, although this is shared with the nine other cottages that line the sides. 

The home's excellent location is another big plus-point, seeing as it puts you a short drive from a wide range of charming local attractions, from Danes Dyke Beach and the seaside town of Bridlington to the path running around the cliffs of the Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast.

Sleek and contemporary, this coastal apartment is an ideal seaside retreat for two. Not only is the location excellent – right in the heart of Filey, only a five-minute walk from the beach – but the mod-cons are pretty great, too. There's a luxe rainfall shower in the bathroom, a Nespresso machine for morning cups of coffee, two smart TVs and even a tablet for browsing the web. Everything you'll need is taken care of, so all you have to do is sit back and relax. The grey colour scheme is slick and modern, especially in the kitchen – with plenty of counter space, appliances and crockery, cooking is anything but a chore. But when you don't fancy whipping up something, there's a great collection of restaurants, pubs and cafes on your doorstep, plus plenty of shops, boutiques and activities to keep you entertained. Enjoy a morning stroll along the statue-lined promenade or grab a towel and sprawl out on the huge stretch of sand at Filey Beach.  But if you prefer a more active holiday, Filey is at the start (or end) of the Clevland Way, which promises fresh air, coastal trails and beautiful views of the ocean.

If you want to venture further afield, enjoy a walk along the huge stretches of sand and cliff at Filey Brigg – don't forget to stop off at one of the Old Town’s traditional tea rooms or pubs along the way. On warmer days, we would love nothing more than to take our morning cup of tea and breakfast outside to the home’s courtyard to enjoy the fresh air. Then, explore everything that Beverley has to offer, from Saturday markets to antique centres, from its thriving music scene to competitive escape room fun. What’s more, the medieval skyline remains unspoilt, so why not stop at a cafe and enjoy the view?

Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.

In the heart of historic Whitby, this snug apartment provides the perfect retreat for two. Cosy and contemporary, what it lacks in space, it more than makes up for in comfort. We can already picture ourselves sinking into the plush sofa with a cup of Yorkshire brew after a day in the fresh sea air. Outside, a charming little patio beckons on summer days – it's a sweet spot to enjoy a glass of wine and nibble on Wensleydale cheese as the sun slowly sets. There's also a sleek kitchen ideal for rustling up lighter bites, a glossy bathroom and a sumptuous bedroom that will leave you feeling well-rested and ready to explore.

The enviable locale makes exploring a breeze. Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

In the local area, there's a wealth of attractions to be discovered, from the Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea just two-and-a-half miles away to the Cleveland Way National Trail, which can be reached on foot and rewards those that follow the path with views of the dramatic coastal landscape.

Spend cosy family getaways with this base in Muston as your comfy base. Just a five-minute drive away from the coastal trails, impressive rock pools and sandy beach of Filey – from here, you'll get to experience both the eastern England coastline as well as the fabulous Yorkshire countryside. 

And with comfort and charm at the heart of this home's aesthetic, it's safe to say chilling out and reconnecting with nature comes easy here. With four bedrooms and two main living areas, you'll find plenty of space to relax after spending fun-filled days amidst the local nature. When it's sunny, why not enjoy an aperitif out on the patio?  During the evenings, the complimentary Netflix invites you to snuggle up on the sofas in front of your favourite films and TV shows.

This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot). 

There's plenty to do in the lands beyond, too, if you'd rather up the ante. The North York Moors national park is just a three-minute drive away (forty minutes on foot). 

And when thoughts turn to food, there are some delightful pubs just moments away. And a charming tearoom for your fix of Yorkshire Fat Rascals is dangerously close - it's just below your door.

It’s a five-minute jaunt to the sprawling sands of Whitby Beach and you can even take the lift down the cliffs. Although this wooden lodge sits in the middle of a leafy caravan park in the North Yorkshire countryside just outside of Whitby, there's nothing temporary or makeshift about the living quarters. The double-height windows in the living room do a brilliant job of bathing the interior in natural light, as well as offering peaceful views of the surrounding trees. This charming cottage in Robin Hood's Bay has character in spades. Its interior, filled with quirky maritime antiques, harks back to the town's smuggler history – in the eighteenth century, silk, tea, and gin were illegally brought ashore on the Yorkshire coast in such quantities that the alcohol was used for cleaning windows. Even today, the lively village is full of winding narrow lanes, with fishermen selling their fresh catch of the day. Walk for two minutes, and you'll be on the sandy beach - perfect for sunbathing or rock pool exploration. The village of Robin Hood's Bay is just five miles from the seaside delights of Whitby (and its two-mile-long beach). It's also part of the North York Moors National Park, so you can forget about the city and hike through unspoiled nature or take the authentic steam train through the hills for a more relaxed scenic journey. After a long day of seeing the sights, return to this special cottage to warm up by the open fire or get the barbecue going on the patio in the summer months (perhaps accompanied by a gin and tonic you've smuggled in).

You’re a ten-minute walk from the beach – fifteen if you stop for an ice cream. Cross the River Esk and climb the 199 steps to reach the famous Abbey. With all of that exploring, you’ll have worked up quite an appetite, so pick up a fish supper from an award-winning chip shop and enjoy overlooking the harbour.
