Everything you'll need is taken care of, so all you have to do is sit back and relax. The grey colour scheme is slick and modern, especially in the kitchen – with plenty of counter space, appliances and crockery, cooking is anything but a chore. But when you don't fancy whipping up something, there's a great collection of restaurants, pubs and cafes on your doorstep, plus plenty of shops, boutiques and activities to keep you entertained. If you want to venture further afield, enjoy a walk along the huge stretches of sand and cliff at Filey Brigg – don't forget to stop off at one of the Old Town’s traditional tea rooms or pubs along the way. After a day of exploring, gather the family around the eight-seater wooden dining table for a hearty home-cooked meal, before retiring to the comfort of the adjoining living area and its sofa, armchair and two loungers (which are perfect for curling up in front of the smart TV, if you ask us). Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.

It's also under twenty minutes on foot from the historic town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, best known for its pier and charming tramway – it’s one of the oldest operating water-balance cliff lifts. When you're not trying the town's excellent bars and restaurants, make the most of the modern kitchen, perhaps taking your meal down to the garden for an alfresco dinner. The comfortable outdoor seating is also perfect for relaxing in the evening, watching the sun go down with a drink or two. Or simply take in the views over the beach, North Sea and Huntcliff from the sunroom – we think the vistas here are wonderful.

The majority of the individually decorated rooms include an eye-catching feature wall, adding a splash of colour and a playful atmosphere to the home, while the enclosed garden is perfect for outdoor dinners and playtime with four-legged friends and energetic children. 

You'll hear the occasional cheer from the terraces of the nearby football club. Still, its family-friendly atmosphere on match days makes it an ideal candidate for a first football match, with little worry about the outlay when your children inevitably grow bored around fifteen minutes in. 

After catching a snippet of the game, enjoy an afternoon stroll southwards along the dramatic coast towards the historic seaside spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea with its iconic cast iron pier stretching 208 metres out to sea and its Grade II-listed cliff lift.

The Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea makes for an excellent seaside escape. It’s a real coastal retreat, surrounded by charming seaside towns and villages – you can use Saltburn as your base for exploring the area. 

This charming apartment is ideal for romantic getaways, and equally well suited to solo stays by the sea. We love the traditional beams and cosy, homey vibe. You’ll feel at home the instant you arrive at this stylish abode. Best of all, the apartment boasts sea views. Wake up each morning to see the sea rushing ashore. Step out onto the balcony to sip your morning coffee, and breathe in the sea air. The blue-tiled kitchen is a lovely spot for your meals, whether you’ve whipped up a cooked breakfast or are unwrapping fish and chips for your evening meal. 

It’s just a short walk down to the beach, where you can build sandcastles, skim stones, or even try out the surf. Saltburn is also home to the UK’s oldest functioning cliff lift – enjoy the ride down to the promenade. Later on, stroll along the 208-metre-long pier with an ice cream – we do love to be beside the sea.

This cosy house is perfect for family breaks to the seaside. It stands on the edge of East Cliff, just a ten-minute walk from Whitby’s town centre and its narrow medieval streets lined with pubs, shops and comfy cafes. You can walk easily to the west side of town, where you’ll find the Blue Flag West Cliff Beach and its brightly coloured beach huts. Add in the wonderful Whitby Abbey and its rich history, and you’ll never be short of things to see and do here. 

The house itself is warm and welcoming, with heaps of space. It’s an excellent choice for a big group of friends or a couple of families travelling together, as there’s plenty of room for everyone. We love the balcony that opens out from the living room – it boasts gorgeous views of Whitby and its harbour, and is the perfect spot for a morning cuppa. Later on in the day, you might pick up takeaway fish and chips to unwrap on one of the picnic tables on the terrace. It’s a lovely way to round off a day at the seaside.

The Guisborough Branch Walkaway is less than a five-minute stroll from your door where you’ll find a trio of hiking trails, a cycling track, orienteering and a play area, and should you fancy a day by the sea, Saltburn-by-the-Sea is just a fifteen-minute drive away.

This charming townhouse is the perfect base for a coastal retreat. The house is warm and cosy, with a log burner in the living room that’s just dreamy on dreary afternoons. It’s perfectly situated in the centre of Whitby, with beaches and tourist attractions within walking distance. 

After enjoying a hearty family breakfast in the dining room, you might head out to the Blue Flag West Cliff beach to stroll along the sand and admire the colourful beach huts. The townhouse is dog-friendly, so your four-legged friends can join in on the fun. Later on, climb the 199 steps to the Church of Saint Mary, or visit the ruins of Whitby Abbey to see what inspired Bram Stoker. 

Pick up world-class fish and chips to take back to the townhouse, and enjoy them in front of the fire. If your legs are aching from the steps, you might enjoy a glass of wine in the free-standing bathtub – the perfect way to end the day.

Thanks to its prime coastline location and eclectic history, Whitby has been drawing in tourists for hundreds of years and if you're tempted to pay a visit, this home is a great base from which to explore the Yorkshire town.

Rather ironically, it's what lies outside that makes this apartment special – gaze out through the windows and you're treated to a sublime view of the North Sea. There's also a private balcony just off the kitchen in case you fancy starting the day with coffee and the sun on your skin – can't we be optimistic?

There's also a lot to like about the interiors, too. The design in the living room is a quirky mix of vintage and contemporary, as seen with the tan leather sofas sitting underneath a grand chandelier. You'll find the kitchen to be decently enough sized for bouts of home cooking and there are no complaints about the minimalist bedrooms, either.

So, what's there to do nearby? Well, quite a lot as it happens. West Cliff Beach and the promenade are about five minutes' walk from the front door, while the famed Whitby Abbey and 199 steps are just over twenty minutes away on foot, crossing the River Esk in the process.

Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Then, explore everything that Beverley has to offer, from Saturday markets to antique centres, from its thriving music scene to competitive escape room fun. What’s more, the medieval skyline remains unspoilt, so why not stop at a cafe and enjoy the view?

Plus, Beverley Westwood is roughly a two-minute drive away from this home where you can enjoy leisurely walks, a round of golf or even watch some horse racing at the racecourse.

A huge perk is that this pad is pet-friendly, welcoming one well-behaved dog to join in on the fun. Despite the plain bedrooms and basic bathrooms, overall, we think it's a good option for families keen to explore North Yorkshire.
