Walking out your front door onto the beach is a novelty you'll never tire of at this Victorian period apartment perched right along Seaford's Esplanade.

For all the apartment's period grandeur and charm (think soaring ceilings and original wooden flooring), the apartment is expertly reimagined for modern living. There's a log burner fireplace for chiller evenings, lighting fast Wifi for those working remotely (if you must), and heaps of contemporary style with unique artwork and an array of houseplants bringing the space to life.

But it's the uninterrupted sea views taking all the glory here – best seen from the living room's bay window, savouring a freshly brewed morning coffee from the pod machine. Or grab a deck chair and nip over the road to the beach to decamp for a while. It's an afternoon well spent with its gently sloping shores, colourful beach huts, artisan ice cream sellers, and playground nearby.

Away from the beach, Seaford's pace of life is much slower than its party cousin, Brighton (half an hour drive along the coast). Spend days hiking over the South Downs (or, for the adventurous, parasailing) and exploring the nearby charming Sussex villages of Alfriston and East Dean (both just a ten-minute drive). We love the exposed old brick walls and the lofty vaulted ceilings in the huge open-plan living space. Our absolute favourite feature here, though, is the sumptuous bedroom with its dramatic, dark panelled walls and super comfy natural linens.

Hidden away in the gardens of a 16th-century manor house, this home in East Sussex was once a stone farm building, but today, you'll find a rather lovely rural escape.

Despite the property's long history, the interior is contemporary in style, with smart Karndean flooring, soothing white walls and furnishings that come from the Scandi school of style. Aside from during the depths of winter, fresh flowers sourced from the flourishing south-facing garden, which can be spotted out of the living room windows, are thoughtfully arranged about the house by the host. 

Head out the back door and you can admire the magnolia tree and plant beds for yourself, or simply sit out on the patio with the barbecue smoking away in the background. From this vantage point, It's possible to see Newick's 11th-century sandstone church — the clock of which is silent, you might be happy to learn.

Elsewhere in the village, there's a cricket pitch, a children's playground, and a woodland walk that comes alive with bluebells in the spring. In the morning, why not check out the local bakery and grab some fresh croissants for breakfast? For lunch, stop by the cafe, and for dinner, choose from three oak-beamed pubs featuring roaring fires and tasty meals, all within easy walking distance.

Although the locale feels like the quintessential English countryside, the city of Brighton only takes thirty-five minutes to reach in the car whenever you have a hankering for a day at the seaside.

You may spot the local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and barn owls. If you have children with you, though, a fenced-off pond is nearby, so they'll need to be supervised. Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

The interior is characterfully designed using reclaimed and antique materials, offering a revitalised version of seaside chic. The host is evidently a fan of up-cycling – look out for creative touches such as repurposed doors, stain-glass windows and rustic radiators. We especially love the wood-panelled walls and flooring that shape the space as a whole, while the comfortable furnishings, neutral tones and wood-burning stove keep things cosy. 

Here, as much attention has been paid to comfort as it has to style – drift off to sleep beneath Egyptian cotton bed linen or relax on leather sofas in the sitting room. But, don’t spend too much time inside as this home is close to an expansive sandy beach. Enjoy exclusive use of a private “No Through” sandy road, with access only to residents, and walk to the sand dunes in two minutes. End the day with early-evening sundowners on the front porch, sharing anecdotes and listening to the waves lapping in and out of the shore, before heading into the local village for a spot of traditional pub grub, five minutes away on foot.

But it’s right here at home where we think you’ll be spending most of your time. From alfresco barbecues on the vast garden terrace, sundowners on the mezzanine balcony, and relaxing in the hot tub, to large sit-down dinners indoors overlooking the downs, this house is well suited for entertaining. And there’s heaps of space to spill out in the generously sized bedrooms – spread out over two floors and united by a tasteful mix of contemporary and rustic interiors. Lofty high ceilings, polished concrete flooring (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty), and sleek architectural glazing make quite the first impression. While a bespoke shaker kitchen with all the mod-cons (think Everhot range cooker and wine cooler) and beautifully curated objet’s de art bring character and soul. As refined and attractive a home as you're likely to see, this single-storey apartment is a wing of a Grade II Gothic mansion. But what makes it truly unique is that it faces the ruins of an ancient Franciscan abbey that's of such historical importance it's been granted Scheduled Monument status. Set in the home's grounds, the abbey dates from 1285 and it's quite a sight to wake up to each morning.

Inside, the home is beautifully detailed, with character features like a meticulously restored original fireplace with log burner in the living room, Gothic plasterwork, ornate cornice to the high ceilings and stone mullion windows. Decorated in a classical country residence style, there's a Chesterfield to lounge upon, a vintage dining table and chairs, and an antique writing table. But it also boasts some tasteful modern touches, like the emperor-size bed with a cashmere and wool mattress and 800 thread count linen in the master bedroom, the stylish marble bathrooms, the cosy double bed and built-in bunkbed in the second bedroom. Comfortable and warm, it's a real home from home, with a well kitted-out kitchen (including a basket of local produce) and unbeatable views framed by tall windows.

But the village pub is only a short walk away and the charming medieval town of Rye, bursting with pubs, shops and restaurants, is just a few minutes by car. Explore Winchelsea’s cellar tours, 13th century church with stunning stained glass windows, farm shop, pub, and vineyard wine tours hosted by a neighbour of the home. Keen walkers can hike across the marshes, while beach lovers will be in their element – Winchelsea beach is just down the road, while both Rye Harbour and the famous dunes of Camber Sands are a short drive. You're also only two hours from London.

Overlooking the beautiful Pevensey Bay Beach – this fabulous home makes for the perfect family seaside getaway. Dine alfresco or relax with a glass of Sussex wine in the swing seat as you take in the sublime views of the beach and sea. Inside, those vistas are just as good from the living space.

This home has been designed for comfort with its faux fur throws and soft velvet sofas. We love the sumptuous master suite with its botanical wallpaper and chiffon drapes over the four-poster bed. We can imagine opening the shutters and doors in the morning and listening to the sound of the waves – pure heaven.

After breakfast, walk from the end of your garden (under 40 yards) onto Pevensey Bay Beach and do some beachcombing. Or take some classes with the local sailing club. Pevensey Bay is known as William of Normandy's landing place in 1066 – take a six-minute drive to historical Pevensey Castle or explore the village, just four minutes in the car (a thirty-minute stroll). Further afield, Eastbourne, with its 19th-century pier and Towner Art Gallery, is under a twenty-minute ride.

Since this Grade II listed mansion was nearly destroyed by a fire, it’s been thoughtfully remodelled. It now blends eclectic contemporary design with historic charm, resulting in a beautiful, one-of-a-kind home. It sits on the banks of the River Cuckmere on the edge of Alfriston, with a backdrop of the South Downs National Park. The views can be admired from the grand balcony, the upper dining terrace, and the cypress and olive tree-filled garden. This home has everything you could wish for, including a cellar bar, a hot tub, and a yoga and pilates gym with a sauna. At full occupancy, guests nine and ten will sleep on a daybed in the library – a maximum of eight guests might be more comfortable.

This dog-friendly stone cottage was once part of the late comedian Spike Milligan’s home and, while it can be rented alongside the adjoining cottage for larger groups, we think it makes an ideal self-contained retreat. Both the airy open-plan living-dining area and the main bedroom open directly onto the garden, which features a barbecue for alfresco dining with a side of sea breeze. It's perfectly placed, too, with Rye, Camber Sands, and Hastings all within easy driving distance.

It’s a great spot for walkers as the footpath directly outside leads straight to the Downs, and there are plenty of other local walks to enjoy. Beach-lovers need only drive thirty minutes to reach the south coast. The house itself retains much of its Victorian charm, having been lovingly restored. We love the garden and the cosy wood burner for chillier evenings.

In honour of such a humble appearance – we've named this home after the episode in which it features, titled "Cri de Coeur". Surrounded by 720-acres of National Trust farmland, the property boasts a location amidst breathtaking natural beauty that stretches as far as the eye can see. There's even a 30-acre family-run vineyard owned that guests have the opportunity to discover on a wine tour and tasting organised by the hosts. Make the most of the on-site wine tasting lounge – it's the perfect place to socialise after a day out in the country air. 

As well as communal access to the winery, you'll have private access to an entire wing of the home as well as a private piece of the garden – separate from any other guests. Stone paths pave the way inside to the cosy main living space with a traditional aesthetic throughout. While there isn't a kitchen as such in the wing, the living area includes a fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle and some dining essentials so that you can enjoy simple meals around the table. After country walks through the sheep fields or to Winchelsea Beach (fifty minutes away on foot) – make returning and snuggling up in front of the log burner fire a cosy ritual that you'll crave long after your stay. From the bedroom windows, take in the best views in the house, as the vistas sweep across the rolling hills and out to sea. With the town of Rye positioned just 4 miles away, this place is not as remote as it may seem – as you'll have convenient access to an array of charming shops, pubs and restaurants just a ten-minute drive away.

This delightful coastal home is nestled in Norman’s Bay, between the historic towns of Bexhill and Pevensey. From here, you can effortlessly visit Eastbourne, Camber Sands, and Rye – when you can tear yourselves away from the beach on your doorstep, that is. The house was once a charming cafe and boutique hotel, restored into a beautiful beachfront home ideal for two families travelling together. Enjoy sweeping sea views, lounge on the furnished front terrace, and gather around the fire pit in the garden. You'll fall in love with this home. 

Norman's Bay

Stay near the enchanted Ashdown Forest (fictional home of Winnie the Pooh) when you check in to this cosy house. Great for a family break or group getaway, there’s lots of space to make yourself comfortable (although if ten of you are staying, two will sleep on a sofa bed). The kitchen has everything you need to cater for a crowd, but with village pubs serving food nearby, you can easily take a break from cooking. Handily, this home is half an hour from London Gatwick Airport too, making it a convenient place to stay before or after a flight. And with National Trust homes and even the coast within day trip distance, this is a great base for seeing more of the South of England.

It’s a short stroll down the lane to Broomhill Sands beach and just a little further along the coast to Rye – which has a wider selection of amenities. Back at home, the garden has everything you could need to make the most of the great outdoors – including a fire pit and a barbecue. The main cottage has two cosy bedrooms, while the third bedroom is located in a cute boathouse in the garden – making this a great option for those seeking a little extra privacy.

Looking for a British seaside stay? This might just be the ticket. Located just fifty yards from Camber Sands beach, this coastal home is perfect for beach-loving groups and families. Roll out of bed and enjoy a coffee in the private garden before walking the few steps to the beach. You can spend all day there, or you can hop in the car and visit coastal towns like Rye and Dungeness. In the evening, share a home-cooked meal in the large dining area, or pop back to the beach for some good old fish and chips.

Two comfy armchairs are positioned in front of the sliding doors, so you can keep one eye on the television and the other on the wildlife busying itself in the immaculate garden. Tuck into breakfast in your private courtyard before taking a stroll past the pond and golden barley fields to the paddock, where Caroline’s Soay sheep are kept. Set out on a yomp along country lanes, stopping at gastro pubs along the way. And when it’s time to get some rest, we guarantee you’ll be out like a light as soon as your head hits the pillow of your cloud-soft bed.

The first thing you'll notice is the original oak beams, which are now a prominent feature in the double-height living space. It's hard to resist a spiral staircase, and this one leads to a cosy twin bedroom, but we'd recommend the ground-floor bedroom if you prefer more privacy. The patio is the perfect place for a morning coffee or evening drinks – you probably won't be here the rest of the day, not with bustling Brighton and the tranquil South Downs on your doorstep.

Just a few steps from the beach huts and peaceful shoreline of Norman’s Bay, this 18th-century fisherman’s cottage is postcard-perfect. Inside, you’ll find plenty of character and a log-burning fireplace for cosy nights in. But as with any heritage home, it comes with a few quirks. Taller guests may need to duck under low beams, and the shared garden might not appeal to everyone. That said, the unbeatable location more than makes up for it. Spend your days exploring Bexhill-on-Sea, Brighton, and Eastbourne – all within easy reach. Or stay local – a shop and a pub are a short walk away, and at low tide, the sandy shores are perfect for long coastal walks.

Spread over three buildings, this converted farm dates back to the 17th century and maintains plenty of historic charm. Designed specifically with families in mind, you can have a multi-generational shindig here – two guests have the dairy to themselves (with its ground floor bedroom, it's perfect for older couples), while the farmhouse, spread over three floors, can house up to twelve (with ten adults), and the granary up to ten (with six adults) – the latter two buildings have living areas, as well. You won't need to be apart for long, though – you'll all likely be meeting for mealtimes at the long dining table, while the pool and large garden can fill most of the times in between.

There are several terraces, including one with a pergola flanked by scented lavenders, perfect for alfresco dining, and another with a hot tub. One thing to note, though, is that a public footpath runs through the paddock next to the garden. Inside, there’s a wood burning stove and there’s a rolltop bath in the bedroom’s en-suite. Don’t be fooled by the pictures of the spiral staircase, this home is all on one level (the first floor is only for the owners’ use). When you feel like exploring, the village of Ripe is a short walk away, and the market town of Lewes is nearby too.
