After a delicious breakfast, lace up your walking shoes and stroll the thirteen-mile trail around Bewl, or for a more relaxed pace, grab a good book and retreat to the bench at the water's edge. In the evenings, dine under the scented boughs of wisteria on the patio, savouring a glass of wine as the stars pop out. Head inside when the chill sets in and fire up the log-burner, ending the night with a Netflix film snuggled up on the squishy leather sofa.  When you're ready to pick up the pace, explore the quaint pubs, charming cafes and vintage antique shops in nearby Wadhurst and Ticehurst – both a ten-minute drive away – or set off and visit the numerous castles and National Trust properties in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Set amongst a Medieval farmstead, this gorgeous barn conversion in the heart of the Sussex Weald is the perfect escape. Relax on your private, south-facing terrace, spot the local wildlife, or enjoy an alfresco lunch.

Inside, your hosts have done a fabulous job restoring this home whilst maintaining its original integrity. We love the exposed old brick walls and the lofty vaulted ceilings in the huge open-plan living space. When the Sussex evenings turn chilly, light the log burner, cosy up on the feather-filled sofa and enjoy a movie on the 65 inch Smart TV. Our absolute favourite feature here, though, is the sumptuous bedroom with its dramatic, dark panelled walls and super comfy natural linens.

Ideally located and close to the vibrant towns and picturesque villages of Sussex and the South Downs, this is the perfect rural retreat for those wanting to explore all that the area has to offer.

Originally the stables of a grand 18th-century house, this charming brick cottage is set in a prestigious part of Royal Tunbridge Wells. Tucked away in a mews just a fifteen-minute stroll from the heart of the town, it offers comfortable accommodation with plenty of character features including whitewashed Moorish beams and a cosy country kitchen. If cooking at home doesn’t appeal, there's a huge list of nearby restaurants and pubs to choose from, all just a pleasant walk away, or you can enjoy sunny picnics in the four acres of park-like shared grounds near the abode. 

Just on the doorstep is Tunbridge Wells Common with footpaths and rocky outcrops to explore, and at the bottom of the hill, you’ll find the famous colonnaded shopping area known as The Pantiles, lined with boutiques, art galleries, cafes and outdoor seating. During the summer months, it’s also home to an open-air jazz concert held every Thursday evening. You’ll be perfectly placed for venturing further afield as well whether it be for a day of sailing at Bewl Water Reservoir or a day trip to London which can be reached in forty minutes by train.

Located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within the grounds of a 50-acre estate, this detached oast house overlooks fields and paddocks from its southwest-facing terrace and lawned garden. You may spot the local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and barn owls. If you have children with you, though, a fenced-off pond is nearby, so they'll need to be supervised. Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

Whether you’re sipping something refreshing in the lakeside garden or heading out to explore nearby walking trails and heritage sites, this is an easy-going base for a peaceful countryside break. Suffice to say, it's a lovely space for relaxing after a day spent exploring the beautiful countryside surroundings. From your garden, it's possible to head on to the thirteen-mile cycle trail through woodlands and meadows, before stopping off for a well earned drink at the local pub in the nearby village of Ticehurst — less than ten minutes away on the saddle or twenty-two minutes on foot. By car, National Trust castles and the town of Royal Tunbridge Wells are within a twenty-minute journey, too.

This lovely home is just a seven-minute drive from Tonbridge, with its shops, bars, restaurants, and cafes. It’s also home to one of Britain’s oldest medieval castles, which is well worth a visit. For even more choice when shopping, you might drive thirteen minutes to Royal Tunbridge Wells. For something a little more active, hire canoes or kayaks and journey along the River Medway. Round things off with a pub lunch for a pretty perfect day.

This cosy abode is ideal for those wanting to explore the Kent and Sussex countryside, as well as the local wine farms. Hastings and the coast are only a forty-five-minute drive, too. The cottage has plenty of room, with a double sofa bed in the summer room for those wanting to spread out. We love the beautiful enclosed garden and patio, where you can relax and enjoy the peace and quiet.

The terrace, complete with a fire pit, is perfect for alfresco dining as the little ones play on the grass – it overlooks the Kent countryside, too. Pull on your comfy boots and set out on a hike through the countryside, take a day trip to the refined spa town of Tunbridge Wells (twenty-five minutes by car), visit Chartwell (home of Winston Churchill) or just snuggle up in your little nest and forget about the rest of the world. 

There’s an outdoor seating area if you fancy dining alfresco, and from May to September, you can use the host’s lovely outdoor pool and terrace as well.

Expansive views of quintessential English meadows will greet you all year round, though in spring, a sea of bluebells in the surrounding woods makes it an even more attractive proposition. In summer, a heated pool and tennis court provide plenty of opportunities for outdoor enjoyment. An autumn escape in East Sussex is all about long country walks – admiring the changing colours of nature – followed by a visit to a centuries-old pub. Surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Kent, this little cottage provides the ideal setting for a refreshing rural escape. From here, you can follow hiking trails straight from the door and you’ll find the village of Brenchley is just a short stroll away. Wherever the day takes you, this home has all the essentials needed for a relaxing stay. The rooms are simple, family-friendly and well-suited to couples travelling with pets. It’s worth noting the grounds are shared with the neighbouring home, but it still retains a wonderful sense of peace and privacy.

Stay near the enchanted Ashdown Forest (fictional home of Winnie the Pooh) when you check in to this cosy house. Great for a family break or group getaway, there’s lots of space to make yourself comfortable (although if ten of you are staying, two will sleep on a sofa bed). The kitchen has everything you need to cater for a crowd, but with village pubs serving food nearby, you can easily take a break from cooking. Handily, this home is half an hour from London Gatwick Airport too, making it a convenient place to stay before or after a flight. It's hard to believe that this home is not much more than twenty miles away from London. For a start, beautiful Kent countryside surrounds the property and you can fill your days with dragonfly-spotting, fruit-picking or wild-swimming in the river at the end of the garden.

The interior feels particularly rustic too, from the wooden ceiling beams and the plethora of exposed brickwork to the inglenook fireplace. That being said, there are all the modern comforts you could want here. Above the fireplace, a projection screen comes down for movie nights, while there are also tubs in all the bathrooms so you can start the day off at a super-slow pace.

The nearest village, Edenbridge, can be reached in six minutes' drive and is full of charming distractions, including a monthly farmer's market, a collection of medieval buildings and the Eden Valley Museum. Hever Castle only takes twelve minutes by car too and sits on the edge of the High Weald AONB.

Once the old tuck shop for the converted school next door, this comfortable cottage provides the perfect woodland escape for a couple or solo traveller looking for a relaxing, nature-filled stay. Located on the outskirts of the village of Fairwarp and hugging the edge of Ashdown Forest, there’s a serene tranquillity to this home that’s felt the moment you step inside. Tall vaulted ceilings, modern beams and wood floors set the scene in the main living space with skylights letting plenty of sunlight pour through. Whether you’re kicking back on the sofa with a good book or cooking up a feast in the open, modern kitchen, you’ll feel at ease in this bright, welcoming space. With a private decked terrace off of the living room too, you can enjoy sunny alfresco breakfasts and starlit drinks while taking in the peaceful quiet of your rural setting. We particularly love the gate at the back of the house, which leads directly into Ashdown Forest for day-long rambles in its heath and wooded expanse and plenty of opportunities to see the real-life setting of Winnie-the-Pooh. When you’re not hanging out in your country cottage or exploring the surrounding nature, drive into Fairwarp (four minutes away) for a hearty pub lunch. Alternatively, hop in your car to visit bustling Brighton with its famous beach and pier, forty minutes from your door.

Hidden away in the gardens of a 16th-century manor house, this home in East Sussex was once a stone farm building, but today, you'll find a rather lovely rural escape.

Despite the property's long history, the interior is contemporary in style, with smart Karndean flooring, soothing white walls and furnishings that come from the Scandi school of style. Aside from during the depths of winter, fresh flowers sourced from the flourishing south-facing garden, which can be spotted out of the living room windows, are thoughtfully arranged about the house by the host. 

Head out the back door and you can admire the magnolia tree and plant beds for yourself, or simply sit out on the patio with the barbecue smoking away in the background. From this vantage point, It's possible to see Newick's 11th-century sandstone church — the clock of which is silent, you might be happy to learn.

Elsewhere in the village, there's a cricket pitch, a children's playground, and a woodland walk that comes alive with bluebells in the spring. In the morning, why not check out the local bakery and grab some fresh croissants for breakfast? For lunch, stop by the cafe, and for dinner, choose from three oak-beamed pubs featuring roaring fires and tasty meals, all within easy walking distance.

Although the locale feels like the quintessential English countryside, the city of Brighton only takes thirty-five minutes to reach in the car whenever you have a hankering for a day at the seaside.

Driving up to this home, you’ll no doubt feel as though you’re entering your own version of Downton Abbey or Bridgerton – and once you step inside, it only gets grander. Wooden panel walls, classic fireplaces, beautiful chandeliers, and four poster beds add to the stately comfort of this quintessentially English manor house. Spend the morning nursing a cup of tea with breakfast, before retiring to one of the many rooms to find the most comfortable sofa – of which there are many – so you can spend a few hours getting lost in a Jane Austen novel. Afterwards walk the beautifully manicured grounds, and if you happen to reenact some of the scenes from Pride & Prejudice, we promise not to tell.  

Family trips can be spent puzzling together, or getting all hands on deck in the kitchen to prepare a feast fit for lords and ladies, whilst luxury hen and stag parties might choose to celebrate a different way. The ground floor houses a mix of stylish mid-century furniture and older antique pieces that sit seamlessly alongside one another in the living and dining areas. And while the colour palette is mainly restrained and sophisticated, the vibrant green kitchen adds a welcome pop of colour. 

Double doors lead directly into the garden, where you'll find a couple of sun loungers on the patio and a romantic swing chair on the lawn. An outdoor dining set sits in the dappled shade of an ancient oak tree, with a barbecue ready and waiting for those seemingly endless summer evenings sat outside drinking and dining until well after the sun has set.

After eating your fill, retire to the individually decorated bedrooms on the first floor, where comfy beds and low, pitched ceilings combine to create a cosy vibe that'll have you drifting off in no time.

Fill your days with nature by hiking a section of the High Weald landscape trail, which runs approximately 90 miles from east to west. Alternatively, history buffs will appreciate visiting nearby Herstmonceux Castle, the oldest noteworthy brick building in the country. Finally, Hastings's creative vibe and quirky charm are approximately half an hour's drive away.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.

When you want to explore, your hosts can help arrange River Thames boat trips to pick you and your guests up directly from the garden. There’s also a lovely pub in the nearby village of Wraysbury, a ten-minute walk away. As well as close proximity to Windsor and Eton, Ascot racecourse is just over twenty minutes in the car and Thorpe Park, a fifteen-minute ride, while Henley, which hosts the Royal Regatta is forty minutes. If you visit London, Slough train station (a fifteen-minute drive away) runs services to London Paddington, the fastest being fourteen minutes.

Seamlessly blending modern design, eco credentials and a nod to its past as a chapel, it’s not hard to see why this home caught our eye. With its cosy wood burner and peaceful, rural location, it’s impossible not to relax here. Nestled in the heart of Twitton, between the villages of Otford and Shoreham, you’ll find scenic walks aplenty in the local area, along with country pubs offering sustenance after you’ve burnt off a few calories hiking. Further afield, there are several National Trust properties worth visiting, or a vineyard within walking distance – there’s something for everyone here.

Just a five-minute walk from the picture-perfect village of Shere in the Surrey Hills, this place is a much-loved family home. Set in five acres of private grounds, with views across the rolling hills, it's bound to be a hit with lovers of the great outdoors, with excellent hiking and cycling routes from your door. A substantial period house approached via a sweeping drive, it's a slice of rural living on a grand scale – there's everything from an outdoor pool and tennis court to a vast vegetable garden and free-range hens. And children will love the sunken trampoline.

Inside, elegant styling, country furnishings and eclectic artwork blend to create a lived-in, warm feeling. A beautiful living room and snug both feature working fireplaces and the kitchen is extremely well-equipped when it comes to cooking for a large group (yes, there really are two dishwashers). You can even cook alfresco meals down at the pool house. But its most impressive room has to be the orangery, where a long dining table is the star of the show, against a backdrop of vast windows and doors with spectacular views.

Perfect for special gatherings, and with a new yoga studio, it's also a flexible space with an additional cottage and a garden studio that can be rented alongside it. And when you're not entertaining, the village, with its tea shop and pretty church, is just a stroll through the fields – one of the most scenic villages in England, you may recognise it as one of the locations where the movie The Holiday was filmed.

The modern kitchen is well stocked for cooking up homely meals, or on warm days fire up the barbecue and enjoy lunch alfresco at the wooden table outside. Pay a visit to the Nyetimber vineyard, a fourteen-minute drive away, and pick up some of their excellent sparkling wine. After a day of exploring, there’s nothing better than enjoying a glass of bubbly back at home as the sun sets over the fields.
