Set amongst a Medieval farmstead, this gorgeous barn conversion in the heart of the Sussex Weald is the perfect escape. Relax on your private, south-facing terrace, spot the local wildlife, or enjoy an alfresco lunch.

Inside, your hosts have done a fabulous job restoring this home whilst maintaining its original integrity. We love the exposed old brick walls and the lofty vaulted ceilings in the huge open-plan living space. When the Sussex evenings turn chilly, light the log burner, cosy up on the feather-filled sofa and enjoy a movie on the 65 inch Smart TV. Our absolute favourite feature here, though, is the sumptuous bedroom with its dramatic, dark panelled walls and super comfy natural linens.

Ideally located and close to the vibrant towns and picturesque villages of Sussex and the South Downs, this is the perfect rural retreat for those wanting to explore all that the area has to offer.

Situated on the southern edge of one of England's most picturesque landscapes, dotted with medieval manor houses, family-owned farms and ancient woodlands, this charming two-bedroom home offers a tempting rural retreat for a family or small group of friends.

The ground floor houses a mix of stylish mid-century furniture and older antique pieces that sit seamlessly alongside one another in the living and dining areas. And while the colour palette is mainly restrained and sophisticated, the vibrant green kitchen adds a welcome pop of colour. 

Double doors lead directly into the garden, where you'll find a couple of sun loungers on the patio and a romantic swing chair on the lawn. An outdoor dining set sits in the dappled shade of an ancient oak tree, with a barbecue ready and waiting for those seemingly endless summer evenings sat outside drinking and dining until well after the sun has set.

After eating your fill, retire to the individually decorated bedrooms on the first floor, where comfy beds and low, pitched ceilings combine to create a cosy vibe that'll have you drifting off in no time.

Fill your days with nature by hiking a section of the High Weald landscape trail, which runs approximately 90 miles from east to west. Alternatively, history buffs will appreciate visiting nearby Herstmonceux Castle, the oldest noteworthy brick building in the country. Finally, Hastings's creative vibe and quirky charm are approximately half an hour's drive away.

A traditional rural home in the East Sussex countryside, this place is perfect for a big group celebrating something special and is just a moments drive from the pretty village of Herstmonceux. A place to really get away from it all and just each other's company, it's set on a 300-acre working farm, at the end of a long, private drive. And while the house dates back to the 17th century, the later additions offer modern living space – so you get the best of both worlds. Cosy up in front of the inglenook fireplace in the heavily beamed sitting room, enjoy meals in the formal dining room (or spread out into the hall room and bar area if you're planning a bigger celebration) and relax in the bright conservatory. Sure to be a hit with families, the covered pool is just steps away from the house and is heated for much of the year. Elsewhere, there's a sauna, table tennis in the garage barn and table football in the conservatory. Set up with family rooms for groups, the home's first floor has a galleried landing and lovely views across the gardens and beyond – all the way to the South Downs. From here it's just a forty-minute drive to Brighton or half an hour to Tunbridge Wells, with a village shop and pub just a two-minute drive. Two footpaths cross the farm and connect with many miles of beautiful country walks.

The gardens surrounding this one-bedroom bespoke oak barn conversion are beautiful. There are several terraces, including one with a pergola flanked by scented lavenders, perfect for alfresco dining, and another with a hot tub. One thing to note, though, is that a public footpath runs through the paddock next to the garden. Inside, there’s a wood burning stove and there’s a rolltop bath in the bedroom’s en-suite. Don’t be fooled by the pictures of the spiral staircase, this home is all on one level (the first floor is only for the owners’ use). When you feel like exploring, the village of Ripe is a short walk away, and the market town of Lewes is nearby too.

This stylish and cosy cabin-style property, elevated on stilts, has a tree-house vibe (you'll need to love wood though). We adore the landscaped deck overlooking the gorgeous gardens and meadows and there’s an eco-wood-fired hot tub to relax in after a long country walk (don’t forget your walking boots). If you’re thinking, well I’d love to stay here but there are more of us – you’re in luck as the host has two other properties sleeping up to ten more guests. Out and about, the historic town of Lewes and the Sussex coast are both a twenty to thirty-minute drive away.

With breathtaking views across the water and a gorgeous garden from which to take it all in, we can't think of anything better than spending a few days here, listening to the birdsong and unwinding in the fresh air. A soak in the rolltop bath upstairs is the perfect way to start the morning – and there's nothing better than waking up to the quintessential Sussex views from the Juliette balcony. After a delicious breakfast, lace up your walking shoes and stroll the thirteen-mile trail around Bewl, or for a more relaxed pace, grab a good book and retreat to the bench at the water's edge. Overlooking the beautiful Pevensey Bay Beach – this fabulous home makes for the perfect family seaside getaway. Dine alfresco or relax with a glass of Sussex wine in the swing seat as you take in the sublime views of the beach and sea. Inside, those vistas are just as good from the living space.

This home has been designed for comfort with its faux fur throws and soft velvet sofas. We love the sumptuous master suite with its botanical wallpaper and chiffon drapes over the four-poster bed. We can imagine opening the shutters and doors in the morning and listening to the sound of the waves – pure heaven.

After breakfast, walk from the end of your garden (under 40 yards) onto Pevensey Bay Beach and do some beachcombing. Or take some classes with the local sailing club. Pevensey Bay is known as William of Normandy's landing place in 1066 – take a six-minute drive to historical Pevensey Castle or explore the village, just four minutes in the car (a thirty-minute stroll). Further afield, Eastbourne, with its 19th-century pier and Towner Art Gallery, is under a twenty-minute ride.

You may spot the local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and barn owls. If you have children with you, though, a fenced-off pond is nearby, so they'll need to be supervised. Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

Walking out your front door onto the beach is a novelty you'll never tire of at this Victorian period apartment perched right along Seaford's Esplanade.

For all the apartment's period grandeur and charm (think soaring ceilings and original wooden flooring), the apartment is expertly reimagined for modern living. There's a log burner fireplace for chiller evenings, lighting fast Wifi for those working remotely (if you must), and heaps of contemporary style with unique artwork and an array of houseplants bringing the space to life.

But it's the uninterrupted sea views taking all the glory here – best seen from the living room's bay window, savouring a freshly brewed morning coffee from the pod machine. Or grab a deck chair and nip over the road to the beach to decamp for a while. It's an afternoon well spent with its gently sloping shores, colourful beach huts, artisan ice cream sellers, and playground nearby.

Away from the beach, Seaford's pace of life is much slower than its party cousin, Brighton (half an hour drive along the coast). Spend days hiking over the South Downs (or, for the adventurous, parasailing) and exploring the nearby charming Sussex villages of Alfriston and East Dean (both just a ten-minute drive). Or stay local in Seaford to mooch about its galleries and shops. Just be sure to make it home for dusk – the sunset views are spell bounding.

Inside, you’ll find plenty of character and a log-burning fireplace for cosy nights in. But as with any heritage home, it comes with a few quirks. Taller guests may need to duck under low beams, and the shared garden might not appeal to everyone. That said, the unbeatable location more than makes up for it. Spend your days exploring Bexhill-on-Sea, Brighton, and Eastbourne – all within easy reach. Or stay local – a shop and a pub are a short walk away, and at low tide, the sandy shores are perfect for long coastal walks.

Lie low for a while amid the rolling hills of the South Downs National Park – best seen through the vast south-facing picture windows of this meticulously converted barn. Winding your way up the country lane leading to this home, you could feel a world away from everything. Yet the characterful medieval town of Lewes is just a ten-minute drive away and a little further, Brighton (twenty-minute drive) for a walk by the sea and shopping in its Lanes. But it’s right here at home where we think you’ll be spending most of your time. From alfresco barbecues on the vast garden terrace, sundowners on the mezzanine balcony, and relaxing in the hot tub, to large sit-down dinners indoors overlooking the downs, this house is well suited for entertaining. And there’s heaps of space to spill out in the generously sized bedrooms – spread out over two floors and united by a tasteful mix of contemporary and rustic interiors. Lofty high ceilings, polished concrete flooring (the underfloor heating keeps things toasty), and sleek architectural glazing make quite the first impression. While a bespoke shaker kitchen with all the mod-cons (think Everhot range cooker and wine cooler) and beautifully curated objet’s de art bring character and soul. After bracing walks in the surrounding hills, kick off your muddy shoes in the boot room and sink into the sumptuous sofas to soak up those awe-inspiring views with freshly brewed coffee. Feathered by cosy cushions and the softest sheepskin, it's highly likely you may never want to leave.

Surrounded by ancient woodlands, historic iron workings and picturesque meadows, The Writer's Cottage offers a charming escape to the rolling hills of High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex. Hastings and Rye are both nearby, and easy to reach if you’re after a day trip. The cottage itself on a working farm, which has plenty to see, from the chickens to the orchards, and even the occasional pig. The garden is a lovely place to spend afternoons, and there’s a hot tub available, as well as a hammock slung between the trees. Then, as the night draws in, it’s hard to look past the wood-burning stove, which makes for a spectacularly cosy setting.

Although this three-storey home was only built in recent years, much of the interior design takes inspiration from retro trends. Many of the furnishings are mid-century in style and there are 1970s flourishes peppered about in the form of overhanging metallic lamps and swirly feature walls in the living rooms. That being said, the pristine white kitchen is as modern as they come, as are the bathrooms. Outside, guests get the benefit of not one, but two terraces, with space to cook, eat and relax. The location gives plenty of options for excursions in the great outdoors, too. It's possible to get on a footpath running alongside the River Adur in less than a minute on foot which is a great base for kayaking and paddleboarding, and leads to a 37-mile long track through the South Downs National Park. Shoreham Beach is a mere ten-minute walk via the high street which boasts an abundance of pubs, restaurants and shops, and the Brighton seaside only takes twenty-three minutes to reach in the car.

Situated on a small family-run agricultural nursery, we think this luxury lodge is the perfect place to switch off and recharge. Not only is the location excellent – the idyllic South Downs are practically on your doorstep – but the attention to detail here is second-to-none. Rainfall showers and eco-friendly toiletries in the bathrooms, Netflix on the smart TVs and a panini maker in the kitchen are just a few of the things we love. The design is impeccable with blue velvet, dark greys and lots of wood. It's the perfect blend between rustic, country living and contemporary comforts, with chic furniture handmade by host Lucca. Speaking of, he'll leave a welcome hamper brimming with goodies for you to enjoy, and depending on the season, it'll contain fresh Italian fruit and veg grown on their farm. 

Days start and end here out on the deck, enjoying alfresco breakfasts in the sun and evening dips in the private hot tub. In between, set off and explore the local area – just walk out the front gates and you're on the National Trust South Downs footpath, leading towards Highdown Hill. A fourteen-minute walk away is the local pub, a few eateries and shops in Ferring, and it's only a five-minute drive to the beach. And with Worthing, Chichester and Brighton all less than an hour by car, you'll have plenty of options for adventures around West Sussex.

Jemma also offers a menu of wellness retreat packages at an extra cost (think along the lines of yoga and pilates classes, sound baths and meditation instructors). And if you want to learn a new skill, you can also book vegan and raw food cookery courses – there are even creative tutorials in things like art and photography. At night, we recommend cooking up a storm in the bespoke kitchen (or hiring a private chef to do the honours), socialising with friends, and taking in your stunning surroundings.

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.

When you want to explore, your hosts can help arrange River Thames boat trips to pick you and your guests up directly from the garden. There’s also a lovely pub in the nearby village of Wraysbury, a ten-minute walk away. As well as close proximity to Windsor and Eton, Ascot racecourse is just over twenty minutes in the car and Thorpe Park, a fifteen-minute ride, while Henley, which hosts the Royal Regatta is forty minutes. If you visit London, Slough train station (a fifteen-minute drive away) runs services to London Paddington, the fastest being fourteen minutes.
