Located in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, within the grounds of a 50-acre estate, this detached oast house overlooks fields and paddocks from its southwest-facing terrace and lawned garden. You may spot the local wildlife, including deer, foxes, and barn owls. If you have children with you, though, a fenced-off pond is nearby, so they'll need to be supervised. Inside, there's a log burner for cosy nights in and a charming circular main bedroom. It would be tempting to spend all your time here, wouldn't it? But that would be a shame as Bewl Water is a ten-minute stroll away, pretty Tunbridge Wells is a twenty-minute drive, and Camber Sands is a forty-minute ride.

This lower-ground apartment has a great location in Royal Tunbridge Wells, but more about the address shortly. Firstly, the plush living room has been decorated to a high standard and houses the dining table and a small double sofa bed for guests five and six. The narrow, galley-style kitchen is well-equipped, too, if you want to create some home-cooked meals. If you want a bit of fresh air, up some steps outside you'll find a lawned garden to enjoy. And, when you want to explore the area, the Tunbridge Wells Museum and Art Gallery is a short stroll away. Other attractions such as Dunorlan Park with its meadows and lakes, are also within walking distance.

Inside, your hosts have done a fabulous job restoring this home whilst maintaining its original integrity. We love the exposed old brick walls and the lofty vaulted ceilings in the huge open-plan living space. When the Sussex evenings turn chilly, light the log burner, cosy up on the feather-filled sofa and enjoy a movie on the 65 inch Smart TV. Our absolute favourite feature here, though, is the sumptuous bedroom with its dramatic, dark panelled walls and super comfy natural linens.

Ideally located and close to the vibrant towns and picturesque villages of Sussex and the South Downs, this is the perfect rural retreat for those wanting to explore all that the area has to offer.

Designed specifically with families in mind, you can have a multi-generational shindig here – two guests have the dairy to themselves (with its ground floor bedroom, it's perfect for older couples), while the farmhouse, spread over three floors, can house up to twelve (with ten adults), and the granary up to ten (with six adults) – the latter two buildings have living areas, as well. You won't need to be apart for long, though – you'll all likely be meeting for mealtimes at the long dining table, while the pool and large garden can fill most of the times in between.

A twenty-minute walk will take you into Cranbrook, and the beautiful town of Royal Tunbridge Wells is only half an hour away by car. Perfect as a base for walkers or cyclists, you'll find Bedgebury Pinetum and Bewl Water Reservoir close by, and the area has several National Trust properties to visit, including Sissinghurst Castle Garden, and more than fifty vineyards and breweries that are open to visitors.

The surrounding area has plenty to offer if you can tear yourself away though. You’re only a couple of miles away from the all-important English country pub, and both Hever Castle and Penshurst Place are a ten-minute drive. 

Pull on your comfy boots and set out on a hike through the countryside, take a day trip to the refined spa town of Tunbridge Wells (twenty-five minutes by car), visit Chartwell (home of Winston Churchill) or just snuggle up in your little nest and forget about the rest of the world. 

There’s an outdoor seating area if you fancy dining alfresco, and from May to September, you can use the host’s lovely outdoor pool and terrace as well.

Grain of Truth

Surrounded by ancient woodlands, historic iron workings and picturesque meadows, The Writer's Cottage offers a charming escape to the rolling hills of High Weald, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in East Sussex. Hastings and Rye are both nearby, and easy to reach if you’re after a day trip. The cottage itself on a working farm, which has plenty to see, from the chickens to the orchards, and even the occasional pig. The garden is a lovely place to spend afternoons, and there’s a hot tub available, as well as a hammock slung between the trees. Then, as the night draws in, it’s hard to look past the wood-burning stove, which makes for a spectacularly cosy setting.

The Writer's Cottage

With beautiful country views and a peaceful setting on the owners’ sheep farm, this perfectly petite home is the ideal base for exploring the Kentish Weald. You’re a ten-minute drive from the well-heeled town of Tenterden with its independent boutiques and tearooms as well as many National Trust properties. The beautiful gardens at Great Dixter, just 11 mins away, or the famous Pashley Manor make for a fabulous day out or head just up the road to the pretty weather-boarded village of Rolvenden for the weekly farmers’ market or a pub lunch. The cottage itself is a cute red-brick bolthole where sheep and donkeys graze in the fields out front. Admire the surrounding farmland from the rocking chair on the wooden deck, or watch the kids run free on the lawn. Inside, it’s a cheerful medley of white, teal and magenta and kitsch flowery curtains add a bit of character. Throw open the French doors to let the country air stream in, and perhaps curl up with one of the books from the mini-library to the sounds of sheep in the fields.

This home has been designed for comfort with its faux fur throws and soft velvet sofas. We love the sumptuous master suite with its botanical wallpaper and chiffon drapes over the four-poster bed. After breakfast, walk from the end of your garden (under 40 yards) onto Pevensey Bay Beach and do some beachcombing. Or take some classes with the local sailing club. Pevensey Bay is known as William of Normandy's landing place in 1066 – take a six-minute drive to historical Pevensey Castle or explore the village, just four minutes in the car (a thirty-minute stroll). One of a collection of three cottages on a thirteen-acre working farm in West Sussex, this home is nowhere near as rustic as these details might suggest. Step behind the front door and you'll find an interior that's contemporarily styled with a few quirky touches.

The stark white walls and sleek tiling make for a blank canvas against which the colourful cushions and hand-painted kitchen chairs really pop off. As well as that, the modern grey kitchen and pristine bathrooms are a world away from the back-to-basics country cottages that pepper the map in these parts – the rolltop bathtub in particular is sure to make a lot of guests very happy.

When the weather's on your side, there's a private outdoor space with an alfresco table and barbecue, but it's also lovely to wander about the shared parts of the site. The hosts run a private stud and breed native ponies, so if you're lucky, you might see a foal or two during your stay.

Two comfy armchairs are positioned in front of the sliding doors, so you can keep one eye on the television and the other on the wildlife busying itself in the immaculate garden. Tuck into breakfast in your private courtyard before taking a stroll past the pond and golden barley fields to the paddock, where Caroline’s Soay sheep are kept. Set out on a yomp along country lanes, stopping at gastro pubs along the way. And when it’s time to get some rest, we guarantee you’ll be out like a light as soon as your head hits the pillow of your cloud-soft bed.

Nestled between two islands on the picturesque banks of the River Thames – this beautiful thatched Edwardian home built in 1903, under a fifteen-minute drive from Windsor, is the perfect riverside retreat. Watch the boats, ducks and swans on the river go by from your own private heated pool. Lawns stretch down to the water – perfect for a game of croquet or challenge someone to a game of table tennis. There’s also a multipurpose play area for any younger children.

Inside, you'll see more of those divine riverside vistas. There are two living rooms and plenty of space for entertaining your family or friends. We love the master bedroom’s balcony, but a real highlight of this home for us was the bedroom attached to the side of the house on stilts. It’s constructed out of 19th century beams from one of the last pioneering ships bound for Australia and contains beautiful carvings and unique features from this period.

When you want to explore, your hosts can help arrange River Thames boat trips to pick you and your guests up directly from the garden. There’s also a lovely pub in the nearby village of Wraysbury, a ten-minute walk away. As well as close proximity to Windsor and Eton, Ascot racecourse is just over twenty minutes in the car and Thorpe Park, a fifteen-minute ride, while Henley, which hosts the Royal Regatta is forty minutes. If you visit London, Slough train station (a fifteen-minute drive away) runs services to London Paddington, the fastest being fourteen minutes.

Located on the outskirts of the village of Fairwarp and hugging the edge of Ashdown Forest, there’s a serene tranquillity to this home that’s felt the moment you step inside. Tall vaulted ceilings, modern beams and wood floors set the scene in the main living space with skylights letting plenty of sunlight pour through. Whether you’re kicking back on the sofa with a good book or cooking up a feast in the open, modern kitchen, you’ll feel at ease in this bright, welcoming space. With a private decked terrace off of the living room too, you can enjoy sunny alfresco breakfasts and starlit drinks while taking in the peaceful quiet of your rural setting. We particularly love the gate at the back of the house, which leads directly into Ashdown Forest for day-long rambles in its heath and wooded expanse and plenty of opportunities to see the real-life setting of Winnie-the-Pooh. When you’re not hanging out in your country cottage or exploring the surrounding nature, drive into Fairwarp (four minutes away) for a hearty pub lunch. Alternatively, hop in your car to visit bustling Brighton with its famous beach and pier, forty minutes from your door.

Walking out your front door onto the beach is a novelty you'll never tire of at this Victorian period apartment perched right along Seaford's Esplanade.

For all the apartment's period grandeur and charm (think soaring ceilings and original wooden flooring), the apartment is expertly reimagined for modern living. There's a log burner fireplace for chiller evenings, lighting fast Wifi for those working remotely (if you must), and heaps of contemporary style with unique artwork and an array of houseplants bringing the space to life.

But it's the uninterrupted sea views taking all the glory here – best seen from the living room's bay window, savouring a freshly brewed morning coffee from the pod machine. Or grab a deck chair and nip over the road to the beach to decamp for a while. It's an afternoon well spent with its gently sloping shores, colourful beach huts, artisan ice cream sellers, and playground nearby.

Away from the beach, Seaford's pace of life is much slower than its party cousin, Brighton (half an hour drive along the coast). Spend days hiking over the South Downs (or, for the adventurous, parasailing) and exploring the nearby charming Sussex villages of Alfriston and East Dean (both just a ten-minute drive). Or stay local in Seaford to mooch about its galleries and shops. Just be sure to make it home for dusk – the sunset views are spell bounding.

With a maximum occupancy of four adults, one child and one pet, this home is ideal for a lovely family stay. It's hard to believe that this home is not much more than twenty miles away from London. For a start, beautiful Kent countryside surrounds the property and you can fill your days with dragonfly-spotting, fruit-picking or wild-swimming in the river at the end of the garden.

The interior feels particularly rustic too, from the wooden ceiling beams and the plethora of exposed brickwork to the inglenook fireplace. That being said, there are all the modern comforts you could want here. Above the fireplace, a projection screen comes down for movie nights, while there are also tubs in all the bathrooms so you can start the day off at a super-slow pace.

The nearest village, Edenbridge, can be reached in six minutes' drive and is full of charming distractions, including a monthly farmer's market, a collection of medieval buildings and the Eden Valley Museum. Hever Castle only takes twelve minutes by car too and sits on the edge of the High Weald AONB.
