Look no further than this charming Suffolk home if you're seeking a stylish rural residence with acres of garden to frolic in. Just two miles from the village of Clare, there's plenty to keep you (and the kids) entertained without having to leave your grounds – from the ping pong table and Xbox inside to the trampoline and football net outside. For more laidback holidaymakers, the terrace is well-outfitted with comfy seating for you to sink into.

On cooler days, there are two beautifully decorated sitting rooms to choose from. The furnishings nod to traditional country style but are kept modern with playful patterns and unexpected colour combinations. Quirky artworks hang in a gallery wall layout, and a medley of fascinating knick-knacks lines the shelves. There's plenty to look at here, yet the upstairs bedrooms are imbued with a sense of calm, inviting you to sink into a deep slumber.

The Chic Retreat

Enjoy day after day by the seaside with this contemporary beach apartment, boasting stunning views of the North Sea. There's so much to like here – the northern coast means you get sunrises and sunsets over the water, and there are plenty of areas to spread out and socialise, including a balcony with a bird's-eye view of the shore. You may bump into your neighbours, but the location is worth it. The town is a short stroll away, so you won't need to worry about running out of suncream, and Herne Bay is also excellently located for exploring Kent – you'll find Whitstable a few miles west, to the south is Canterbury, and to the east is Margate, all model day trip destinations.

Herne Bay Hideaway

This rustic barn conversion is a delightful place to stay in the Essex countryside. It has been lovingly restored, and retains its original wooden beams, which give the home a traditional, cottage-like feel. There are public footpaths nearby, meaning you’ll be able to make the most of exploring the surrounding countryside. After a busy day hiking, kick back on the plump sofas with a drink in hand, and warm up in front of the wood burner. During the day, the huge garden is the perfect spot to play games as a group, before cooking up a hearty meal on the Weber barbecue, to enjoy on the outdoor seating.

Butterfly Barn

This is an extra-special home in the grounds of an award-winning boutique vineyard. It’s been carefully curated to offer everything you might need during your stay, and for you to enjoy your visit in the lap of luxury. 

The home is a contemporary villa with vast windows looking out onto the vineyard and the rolling countryside that surrounds the property. The open-plan living and dining space is perfect for chatting over food and sipping wine – there’s even an honesty box wine bar for you to sample the wines produced by the vineyard. A striking nickel bar – like at The Ivy – has pride of place in front of the huge picture window overlooking the vineyard. There are also full height glass patio doors which open onto a wonderful private guest garden and patio.

Outside, pop open a bottle of chilled white or rosé wine and sink into the jacuzzi while the barbecue heats up. When the weather is fine, you won’t want to be anywhere else – there’s a comfy sofa and loungers, ideal for relaxing, and a tennis court if you want to work up a sweat. Dining outside with beautiful views laid out before you is utterly idyllic, especially when the sun starts to sink in the sky. 

If you feel the urge to explore, there’s plenty to see and do in the vicinity. The villa is a four-minute drive from Toppesfield village, where you can enjoy a meal in the community-owned pub. Finchingfield, the most photographed village in Essex is 10 minutes drive. For history enjoy a stroll around Castle Hedingham with its thatched cottages and amazing Norman castle. Saffron Walden, a medieval town – is thirty-six minutes away. There you’ll find a wealth of independent shops, cafes and restaurants around the buzzy market square as well as beautiful historic buildings, gardens, museum and art gallery. 

This is a memorable home for romantic visits to this picturesque area on the Essex/Suffolk border. Make sure you take a bottle of the vineyard’s award winning wine home with you – it’s the perfect memento.


An East Anglian Vineyard

Just ninety minutes outside of London, you will find this charming and character-filled home on a quiet lane in rural Suffolk. It’s over 500 years old, and still has many of the original fittings, from the inglenook fireplaces to the oak beams. Perfect for a family getaway from the city, there is plenty to do and see from the property by foot or bicycle, while lush gardens and cosy interiors are there to enjoy if you’d like to stay put. When it’s meal time, if you don’t fancy getting your hands dirty, there is an excellent local pub just down the road.

Raspberry Scone

Tucked away in Rendlesham Forest, this quintessentially English cottage is as dreamily secluded as it is beautifully striking. The brick-and-stone facade contrasts with the modern extension. Lofty windows capture sweeping green views of woodland and rolling fields, and fill the home with glorious light. These views are best seen from the master bedroom where you'll find high ceilings, decorative beams, and a modern country aesthetic. This home has a farmhouse feel - window sills and kitchen cupboards are painted a cool sage green and you'll find a wood-burning stove in the sitting room. Cooking in the stunning rustic kitchen is easy with its modern amenities, and the exposed brickwork, colourful rugs and elegant dining space make for an idyllic socialising spot. Nature is so easy to access here as the back gate opens directly onto the forest. You can walk for miles or take the 15-minute drive to the beach at Shingle Street for a day at the seaside. This one's definitely a keeper.

The Keeper's Cottage

Newly renovated, this two-bedroom mews cottage boasts open-plan interiors and a mid-century modern inspired aesthetic. Its location within a conservation area only a 2-minute stroll from the beach more than makes up for a lack of outside space. Mere moments from fashionable Harbour Street, you’re practically surrounded by boutique shops, pubs and restaurants. What’s more, you don’t even need a car – Whitstable Station is a 12-minute walk away.

Mid-Century Mews

On a quiet lane and mere steps from artisan bakers, delis, famous pubs and ancient buildings, this picture-perfect cottage is perfectly placed for exploring the historic town of Saffron Walden. The interior is classic country home, with wooden beamed ceilings, exposed brick and a roaring fire, all of which create a cosy atmosphere. Start your mornings by making breakfast in the kitchen, which is best enjoyed around the wooden dining table. Once you're ready to take on the day, step outside to see what the Medieval town has to offer. 

Wander through the streets of old buildings and admire the architecture, visit the local museums to learn more about this fascinating part of the country or spend a few hours inside the beautiful Saffron Walden Library. There's also an array of cute shops, art galleries and cafes to keep you both refreshed and entertained while you're out and about. 

When you get home, indulge in a bubble bath and get ready to go out for dinner – there's an array of pubs and restaurants nearby, meaning you'll be spoilt for choice when deciding where to go. Before you head out, enjoy a glass of wine on the patio, with the gorgeous greenery of the private garden around you. 


A Little Green Garden

Life is but a dream at this lovely cottage set on the sprawling estate of Worlingham Hall. Completely secluded from the Grade I-listed Georgian manor at the heart of the grounds, this home is a unique blend of country charm and plush extravagance. From the snug study – complete with a leather-topped desk and high-backed office chair – every room here feels warm, cosy and just a little bit decadent. Host Tommaso has a passion for antiques – mainly British, Chinese and Tibetan furniture – which only adds to the stately atmosphere. After a day spent wandering the 448 acres of private woodland in your backyard, pop a bottle of bubbly and idle away lazy summer evenings in the lush private garden. In winter, snuggle up on the sumptuous leather sofas with an engrossing book and a fire roaring in the brick hearth. Worlingham lies between Norfolk and Suffolk – an ideal spot for exploring both the idyllic countryside and stunning coastline – while Beccles, a pretty market town boasting an array of quaint tea rooms, charming pubs and independent shops, is just a short thirteen-minute drive away.

Worlingham Cottage

With farmland to the front and the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind – this gorgeous home, part of a cluster of mill buildings, is in an idyllic spot. 

Take a stroll through winding footpaths of the reserve that meander through meadows and forests of giant cedars and ancient oaks. In spring, you’ll see enchanting carpets of bluebells, primroses and daffodils, but whatever time of year you come, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from chaffinches to woodpeckers. There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, just over two miles away, and to the sea at Aldeburgh (or it’s seven minutes in the car). You can borrow some bikes too if you prefer to cycle.

You don’t have to go anywhere to get some fresh air, though. There’s a lovely old cobbled, sunny courtyard where clematis and wisteria clamber up the walls – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the welcome hamper of breakfast goodies. There’s another patio area, too, with fragrant rambling roses – ideal for a glass of wine.

The home itself is a sympathetic conversion of a stable and grain store. We adore the character features inside, such as the traditional 17th Century Suffolk white brick flooring, wood-panelled walls and old oak floorboards. Part of the original manger has been incorporated into the wall dividing the kitchen and the living space area – a lovely touch. Open the stable doors here and listen to the blackbirds singing at dusk. Furnished with antiques, this cottage will appeal to couples and pet owners looking for a luxurious country bolthole.


Blackbirds Singing At Dusk

This pretty 16th Century cottage is full of character and light. Relax on the large enclosed courtyard with its beautiful blossom tree and flower baskets – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of rosé wine. At night the tree is lit up with twinkling lights giving the space a magical feel.

If it gets a bit chilly, head inside and sit next to the large inglenook fireplace with its cosy wood-burning stove. We love this room with its historic beams and antiques. If you don’t fancy eating out, rustle up a dinner using some local fresh seafood from the fisherman’s huts at Aldeburgh, a twenty-minute drive away.

Closer to home, the centre of Wickham Market is 50 yards away, where you’ll find a range of shops including a butchers, antique store and beauty salon, as well as an arts centre. There are a couple of restaurants here as well as a fish n’ chips shop, while there are many pubs nearby, including one in the village of Ufford, a one to two-hour walk from the cottage (or a four-minute drive). Your lovely hosts provide bikes for free, too, if you want to explore the area on two wheels.


Chaffinch Cottage

Getaway to the Essex countryside with a stay in this Neo-Georgian home. Surrounded by a large garden, you can enjoy total privacy and beautiful views as well as a barbecue – perfect for warm weather afternoons. Inside, you’ll be treated to an indoor heated pool, a Jacuzzi and a steam room – covering all your wellness needs. And when it comes to socialising, take your pick from the impressive dining room, a cinema room and a games room. Events are allowed here for a small additional fee and it’s a wonderful base for exploring the surrounding countryside.
