A wall of glass opens up the living room to the valley beyond and the morning mist tumbling between forests and fells is quite a sight from this hilltop location. Come nightfall, you’re far from civilisation so the sky speckles with a blanket of stars – spot constellations from the warmth of the wood-fired hot tub outside or walk to Michelin-star restaurant The Whitebrook, fifteen minutes away. Wandering through the wildflower-strewn garden you’ll find a picnic bench and barbecue for hazy summer days outdoors and rambling walks across the countryside start from just outside the door. Back inside, we love the collection of holiday reads, tucked into bookshelves below the raised bed in the studio. Toys in the living room and bunkbeds in the second bedroom let you know this place is family-friendly too.

It’s a six-minute drive to the centre of Raglan where you can explore castle ruins, pop in to one of the cosy pubs or stock up at the traditional butcher and the local village shop. Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

Just bear in mind, at certain times of the year, the farm can be busy. When you feel like exploring a little further afield, you can visit Chepstow Castle or Lydney in the Forest of Dean.

This delightful holiday home is the garden wing of a fabulous Italianate-style villa that dates back to around 1670. Now a comfortable and modern space, this home delights guests and proves to be the perfect base for exploring the nearby Forest of Dean. 

The villa has been a B&B for forty years, and the garden wing is now available for self-catered stays – it’s ideal for groups of friends or a couple of families getting together for a break. Spend your days out in the fresh air, and your evenings in the wood-beamed living room, playing board games and catching up. 

The Forest of Dean is just a short distance away – you can be at its heart in fifteen minutes. There’s so much to see and do, whether you’re a keen hiker, will be bringing your bikes, or are entertaining little ones. Puzzlewood is seven minutes away by car, and you might even recognise some parts of the Forest from TV and film. 

You can enjoy the great outdoors from the property itself, too. The villa boasts twenty acres of land and formal gardens, which are a delight to stroll through, as well as ponds and a pretty brook. Additionally, you’ll have your own private fenced garden – why not serve afternoon tea in the sunshine?

Spend your days hiking through the hills with your dogs, before hosing them down at the outside tap and jumping into the warm water – we can't help but feel that the dog's getting the raw end of the deal here.

Speaking of walks, there are plenty of public footpaths that pass across the farm, with your hosts able to provide OS maps and walking books should you need them. If you want to venture further afield, why not head up the Skirrid, Sugar Loaf and Black Mountains – all viewable from the garden.

Living on the grounds of a 16th century country-house in the lush green Cotswolds (the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) already creates the ideal setting for nature lovers. Once you settle in with biscuits, fresh scones and fruits on arrival (among other goodies) and befriend the curious chickens, embark on a walk through the rolling Cotswold hills and valleys. While Netflix and cocoa are perfect for rainy days in, there is a whole world out there on sunnier days. The Cotswold Way is a trail that we’d definitely recommend, with plenty of historic pubs along the way, each serving their own collection of local ales. The home is located in Painswick, a village known as The Queen of the Cotswolds and characterised by beautiful narrow streets of honey coloured stone buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants in and around the village, so make sure you ask the host, Hannah, for some recommendations.

Perhaps you’ll lace up your boots and head out on a nature walk. There’s an acre of woodland on the 40-acre farm, as well as a stretch of river for you to paddle in. But if you're in the mood for a change of pace, Bath is just a twenty-minute drive away.

Add into the mix, gig sash windows, high ceilings, and the central (yet surprisingly peaceful) location – and you've got yourself a pristine base from which to explore the picturesque city of Bath. Stroll just seven minutes to visit the historic Roman baths and explore the high street boutiques, cafes and restaurants that surround it. There's no need to drive or even use public transport here, as most of the city is within reach of a convenient walk from your apartment.

Even before you enter, it’s clear that there’s something special about Faerie World. The high position of the cottage gives a heavenly view of the stream below, and you can hear the babbling water from the terrace, which is itself surrounded by flowers, and makes you feel like you’re in a fairytale. Once inside, the living room and bedroom don’t disappoint. The bedroom in particular, with its Farrow & Ball colours, stands out. The kitchen doesn’t have the same aesthetic charm, but that’s a small gripe, and shouldn't give you any cause for concern.

Just outside the picturesque village of Llanfrynach, on the grounds of a grade II*-listed Georgian mansion, this one-bedroom cottage is all about rest and relaxation. This former coach house has been converted into a stunning contemporary space. Downstairs, the sitting room boasts sky-high ceilings and ten-foot-tall French doors leading out onto a private patio. The wood burner and deerskin rugs on the floor add a cosy feeling that's perfect for the colder months, while during the summer, you can throw open those doors and let the outside in. The cottage actually has two patio areas – one facing east and the other west – so you can always catch the sun no matter the time of day.
