Nestled on two acres of land in the Royal Forest of Dean, stepping into this Grade II-listed characterful lodge might feel like entering a time machine. Originally built by order of King Charles II himself, the antique furnishings and original oak beams hearken back to its history, but we're sure Charles didn't envision a swimming pool, hot tub, or cinema room. Those modern amenities feel very far away in the attic, accessed via a secret bookcase door – make yourself at home with a novel, and try not to get distracted by the views. Or, snuggle up by the fireplace. Nearby, there are plenty of walking trails to satisfy adults, little ones, and dogs alike, and for a more leisurely afternoon, it's just a short walk to the pub in Yorkley.

On arrival at this beautiful A-frame cottage, you’ll be greeted with stunning views across the Wye Valley and a couple of bottles of local ale from your host’s favourite brewery. A wall of glass opens up the living room to the valley beyond and the morning mist tumbling between forests and fells is quite a sight from this hilltop location. Come nightfall, you’re far from civilisation so the sky speckles with a blanket of stars – spot constellations from the warmth of the wood-fired hot tub outside or walk to Michelin-star restaurant The Whitebrook, fifteen minutes away. Wandering through the wildflower-strewn garden you’ll find a picnic bench and barbecue for hazy summer days outdoors and rambling walks across the countryside start from just outside the door. Back inside, we love the collection of holiday reads, tucked into bookshelves below the raised bed in the studio. Toys in the living room and bunkbeds in the second bedroom let you know this place is family-friendly too.

This comfortable apartment in Lydney is an excellent base for exploring the Forest of Dean and Gloucestershire. It’s on the edge of the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, too – charming villages and stunning countryside await. The apartment is contemporary and cosy, with an open-plan living, dining, and kitchen space at its heart. Staying here, you’ll have access to beautiful shared gardens with four ponds and delightful outdoor seating spots. Your four-legged friends can come too, so nobody has to miss out. 

An Emerald Escape

There are verdant countryside views from this home’s first-floor open-plan living room (this home has an upside-down layout with the bedrooms on the ground floor). You can enjoy the vistas from the garden with its lawn and patio too – this space is pet-friendly as well. Located in the village of Longhope in the Forest of Dean, there’s a pub a short stroll away and there are plenty of hiking and biking opportunities in the area. Or explore Gloucester with its cathedral and historical docks, just over 10 miles away.

The design inside lies on the rustic side of things, with exposed stonework and wooden ceiling beams to be spotted alongside a wood-burning stove, a clawfoot bathtub and an ornate bed frame in the master bedroom. That being said, there's a contemporary sheen where it matters, especially in the pastel bedrooms, sleek bathrooms and the kitchen complete with an Aga.

So how would you fill your time at the address? Well, when the weather permits, you can make the most of the large garden with a lawn big enough for games and a patio area for alfresco feasts. There's even a hot tub ready and waiting for a relaxing spot to pass the golden hour. If, however, grey clouds make an appearance at any point, don't fret – there's a snooker table inside, as well as another games room in the external former stables, that should keep guests entertained for a while.

In the local area, the town of Lydney is only eight minutes' drive away when you need supplies, while both Newport and Gloucester lie about forty-five minutes away in the car. There's a wide choice of natural attractions to be discovered nearby as well, ranging from the Forest of Dean and Puzzlewood to Clearwell Caves.

Perfect for a rural escape, it’s close to the Cotswolds and the beautiful countryside of Gloucestershire. You’ll also be just a short drive from Gloucester, where you can shop, dine out, and visit the stunning cathedral. The stylish home features an attractive open-plan living and dining space, with a well-equipped, modern kitchen. There are two gardens, one with a front patio for dining in warmer months. Best of all, there’s a hot tub, ideal after a hike.

Gloucester and its cathedral are just 8.5 miles away, making for a great day trip. When you’re not out exploring nearby Robinswood Hill Country Park, you can curl up by the wood-burning stove under exposed beams. In warm weather, the pretty garden is the place to be.

Outside the terraced garden offers more vistas and plenty of places to relax in the Gloucestershire sun and there’s a barbecue and pizza oven for alfresco dining.

Ideal for two, and surrounded by fields and footpaths, this shepherd's hut sits in the heart of a working dairy farm in the Wye Valley, just fifteen minutes from Chepstow. Rolling countryside as far as the eye can see and quaint villages tucked into the valleys of Monmouthshire on your doorstep – this converted stone barn is an idyllic getaway. It’s a six-minute drive to the centre of Raglan where you can explore castle ruins, pop in to one of the cosy pubs or stock up at the traditional butcher and the local village shop. Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

Locally, you can take to the forest trails straight from your doorstep, or venture further to Mallard’s Pike, where picnics by the lake, surrounded by nature, are a must.

This delightful holiday home is the garden wing of a fabulous Italianate-style villa that dates back to around 1670. Now a comfortable and modern space, this home delights guests and proves to be the perfect base for exploring the nearby Forest of Dean. 

The villa has been a B&B for forty years, and the garden wing is now available for self-catered stays – it’s ideal for groups of friends or a couple of families getting together for a break. Spend your days out in the fresh air, and your evenings in the wood-beamed living room, playing board games and catching up. 

The Forest of Dean is just a short distance away – you can be at its heart in fifteen minutes. There’s so much to see and do, whether you’re a keen hiker, will be bringing your bikes, or are entertaining little ones. Puzzlewood is seven minutes away by car, and you might even recognise some parts of the Forest from TV and film. 

You can enjoy the great outdoors from the property itself, too. The villa boasts twenty acres of land and formal gardens, which are a delight to stroll through, as well as ponds and a pretty brook. Additionally, you’ll have your own private fenced garden – why not serve afternoon tea in the sunshine?

Living on the grounds of a 16th century country-house in the lush green Cotswolds (the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) already creates the ideal setting for nature lovers. Once you settle in with biscuits, fresh scones and fruits on arrival (among other goodies) and befriend the curious chickens, embark on a walk through the rolling Cotswold hills and valleys. While Netflix and cocoa are perfect for rainy days in, there is a whole world out there on sunnier days. The Cotswold Way is a trail that we’d definitely recommend, with plenty of historic pubs along the way, each serving their own collection of local ales. The home is located in Painswick, a village known as The Queen of the Cotswolds and characterised by beautiful narrow streets of honey coloured stone buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants in and around the village, so make sure you ask the host, Hannah, for some recommendations.

With breathtaking panoramas from every vantage point, this home is a gem. You'll be able to enjoy the views from the private hot tub and garden – although our favourite is the glimpses of the River Severn and Old Severn Bridge from the main bedroom. There’s the all-important log burner for when the weather gets chillier, too. This home is set on a working dairy farm, and your host is happy to give you a tour of the farm – something the kids will probably adore. Just bear in mind, at certain times of the year, the farm can be busy. When you feel like exploring a little further afield, you can visit Chepstow Castle or Lydney in the Forest of Dean.

With far-reaching countryside views, this stylish Gloucestershire barn conversion is the perfect retreat for families and friends. The large private garden is a great place to relax with its hot tub, paved patio complete with barbecue and alfresco dining table. Inside, the lofty open-plan living space is perfect for entertaining after a day of exploring the Severn Estuary. Located on the outskirts of the quaint village of Aust, the vibrant city of Bristol is reachable by car. Cribbs Causeway shopping mall with its variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and cinemas is also a short drive away.

Set within seven acres of private woodland in the beautiful Slad Valley, this architect-designed home has amazing views across the Cotswold escarpment. You can enjoy the vistas from its terrace and various seating areas, as well as from inside. There’s the all-important log burner in the open-plan living area and a library to relax in with a book. We love that the main bedroom suite opens out onto the patio too. When you want to explore, the town of Stroud is around 3 miles away with its farmers’ market and museum, while the local village pub is just over a mile.

Slap bang in the national reserve of Malvern Hills, this collection of barns is based in an official Area of Outstanding National Beauty, and the home itself isn't far off that description, too. With vast arched glass windows, cool and contemporary spaces filled with natural light, original wooden beams everywhere, and an indoor pool so luxurious it belongs in a Bond villain's home, you'll want to spend your whole trip at this retreat. The lounge has sweeping views for when you want to relax with a film between glances at the stars, and the dining space is the perfect place to serve an elegant dinner spread or a lazy round of coffees. Explore the national reserve and its diverse landscape on your doorstep, and take a hike to Midsummer Hill - a walk or quick drive away. Bathe in luxury in either the huge shower or the sleek bathtub - the best way to wake up on a getaway.

These luxurious shepherd’s huts are an excellent choice for a romantic retreat. This quirky home can be found in a secluded meadow on the edge of a natural wood, close to the ancient settlement of Penterry. There are stunning views to be discovered nearby, and you can relax and unwind amid the tranquillity of the Wye Valley. The bathroom, with a bathtub and separate shower, is in a separate shepherd’s hut, while the petite kitchen and bedroom are in a studio layout in the main hut. Space is limited, but the setting more than makes up for that.

Bordering the rolling greens of the Cotswolds, and with horse racing, Regency architecture, and independent shops to discover throughout, you get a taste of both the city and country lifestyle in Cheltenham. Eleven minutes from the town centre, this apartment offers an elegant base for your stay in Gloucestershire. A neutral palette of colours in the living space brings a sense of calm, with a plush, pale-peach sofa and sand-coloured walls contrasting beautifully with dark wooden floors. Of course in this historic place, there would have to be some original features to admire in the home. Our favourites are the Georgian sash windows, ornate ceiling rose, and green tiled fireplace. Imagine cosying up around this striking hearth with a glass of pinot noir in hand – bliss. Another excellent spot to enjoy sipping wine would be in the freestanding bathtub, just for an extra feeling of spa-like luxury. In the morning, after a cup of Earl Grey, hop in the car and explore the Cotswolds half an hour away. Or if you’re looking for a more local green space, Montpellier Gardens are just a seven-minute walk from home.
