This isn't your typical Cotswolds hideaway, that's for sure. Don't get us wrong, we thought this pad had oodles of charm and plenty of characterful touches, but the mid-century inspired design is more trendy than traditional. Picture plush leather sofas, a statement-making hay-stuffed bench, colourful Farrow & Ball paint and funky antler artwork – it's an immaculate mishmash of styles and textures. And your lovely host has thought of all the details, including a basket filled with locally sourced goodies and a bottle of Prosecco – we thought it was the perfect welcome.

After a wander around the village, curl up with a book in the window seat or pour yourself a glass of wine and get cosy for a Netflix movie night. Light floods through the kitchen thanks to the skylights, making it a great spot to rustle up a meal while listening to your favourite tunes on the Sonos speakers. Come bedtime, snuggle up in the sumptuous beds for a restful night's sleep.

Moreton-in-Marsh is one of the most picturesque villages in the Cotswolds, and this is a fab location right in the heart of town. You'll have a wealth of places to eat and drink on your doorstep, an array of art galleries, antique shops and boutiques to browse, and scenic country walks surrounding you when you fancy an afternoon in the great outdoors.

With honeyed stone walls and a Grade II listed status, this bronze South West Award-winning traditional stone cottage is quintessentially Cotswolds. The exposed beams and inglenook fireplaces showcase the building’s considerable heritage (it dates back to 1670), but you’ll find plenty of modern comforts here, as well as cosy styling that favours neutral tones and natural textures. We love that it’s a home for all seasons — stride out on blustery walks in the winter months, before coming back to underfloor heating, a wood burner and thick goose down duvets. In the summer, the British countryside is arguably at its best and here you get access to a large birdsong-filled garden with plenty of shady spots for a gin and tonic. Stargazers are in luck here as there are no streetlights in the local village of Southrop and the Milky Way shines extra bright. And of course, what would a country getaway be without a nearby pub? The Swan can be reached in about three minutes' walk, although the Victoria Inn takes half an hour in case you fancy earning your pint.

We don't think it's an over-exaggeration to say that this has to be one of the most remarkable homes in our collection. Perched on the banks of Huntsman Lake, you're never short of an exquisite view because the whole exterior is made of glass. Yes, that's right. The unique property was designed by the Dutch architectural firm Mecanoo and is full of luxuries and surprises.

Head up to the roof, for instance, where you'll find a huge terrace complete with a garden and a sweeping panorama of a further three lakes. Closer to the water, there's another decking area where you can relax on one of the loungers and watch the local birdlife.

The only place in the house which isn't treated to sights of the jaw-dropping scenery is down in the basement. Why head down here, you ask? Well, there's a nine-seater cinema, bar area, Jacuzzi, sauna and full-size snooker table. That's why.

Back upstairs, the interior design does its best to demand your attention against fierce opposition and succeeds at times with the bold modern artwork, designer furniture and staircase carved from a 500-year old tree from Slovenia. The kitchen is a thing of beauty too, with both tandoori and pizza ovens, plus a wine fridge — which the concierge will fill up upon request.

In a home that constantly manages to surprise, the fact that it has excellent eco-credentials is another string to its bow. A combination of an air thermal heat pump, solar panels, heat recovery systems and triple-glazed glass means that energy consumption is low, while the wood on the exterior uses the Japanese technique of Shou Sugi Ban for waterproofing, rather than chemicals. Venture outside in the summer and you can hire a boat or go wild swimming in the lake, or book a go on the zip-line and experience the landscape from a thrilling perspective.

Although you might think that it would be hard to beat the immediate surroundings when it comes to looks, the Cotswolds AONB can be reached in ten minutes' drive and has some pretty swoon-worthy views itself. The town of Cirencester only takes twenty minutes to reach in the car, too.

From the outside, you’d expect Rosemary & Thyme to be a standard Cotswolds cottage, but once you’re inside it’s clear it’s something more. Walking through is like a tour of cultures and styles, from French farmhouse to Belle Epoque, and Rococo to Oriental. There’s a lovely garden, and a short drive away is the pretty town of Lechlade. Echoing the surroundings, the modern interior is peaceful and comfortable, with plenty of space for a family getaway. Location-wise, the estate is a sprawling 850 acres of woodland and meadows that you can explore on foot or by bicycle – perhaps plan a visit to the on-site spa post workout. Thrillseekers can paddleboard or fly high on a zip-wire through the treetops, and seeing as how you're in the heart of the Cotswolds, there's also an option of many day trips to quaint neighbouring towns.

Close to the Cotswold hot-spots of Burford, Lechlade and Bibury, this Grade II-listed property dates back to the 17th Century and was recently lovingly restored to sleep up to 11 guests. It still feels like a traditional home, with its flagstones, mullioned windows and fantastic fireplace, but with all the modern amenities you need. Only a 5-minute drive to the year-round Cotswold Wildlife Park, there’s also a critically-acclaimed gastropub less than 100m away. We love the private garden, the master suite on the top floor with stunning countryside views, and the fact that it’s just steps away from the village shop and pub.

Flooded with natural light, this idyllic country cottage is the perfect getaway for a group or family looking to up sticks and throw themselves into Cotswolds living - it's no wonder it won Silver at The Beautiful South Awards 2022. Dating back to 1850, it has an abundance of original features (including exposed brick walls, a spectacular fireplace, rich wooden beams and stone walls), but a luxurious, contemporary makeover has transformed it into an extraordinarily comfortable stay. 

The two lounges are the heart of the home, made extra cosy by the roaring inglenook wood-burner and underfloor heating, and they make it so you'll never want to leave once you're stretched out on one of the sofas. Oh and you'll be wowed by the spectacular sun room all the same. Guests who love to cook will enjoy making use of the large kitchen and hosting dinners either in the stone dining room or out on the sunny terrace with its glorious countryside views. The bedrooms are all elegantly styled with soft colour schemes and goose-down bedding – we particularly love the Barcelona chair in front of the French doors in the master bedroom, as well as the gigantic free-standing bath, perfect for an indulgent bubble-filled soak. 

With such stunning interiors, you'll be torn between cosying up and outdoor living while staying here – but the pristine, flower-filled garden that surrounds the home will have you jumping with joy once the sun comes out. Enjoy discovering the local charm of the Cotswolds which combines peace and quiet with endless nature and a touch of quintessential English countryside culture.

When we think of the Cotswolds, we imagine honey-coloured, picture-perfect cottages in charming villages, and this home fits the bill. We love the exposed wooden beams and the wood-burning stove in the living room. This semi-detached cottage has two bedrooms – the second is compact with a small double bed, so it's ideal perhaps for the kids. There’s also a front terrace to relax in after a long walk with the dogs or a visit to the local pub, one-minute away. There’s no shop in the village, but there's a grocery store in Fairford, a five-minute drive. Other attractions in the area include historic Cirencester, Burton-on-the-Water, Burford and the Cotswold Water Park.
