Nestled on two acres of land in the Royal Forest of Dean, stepping into this Grade II-listed characterful lodge might feel like entering a time machine. Originally built by order of King Charles II himself, the antique furnishings and original oak beams hearken back to its history, but we're sure Charles didn't envision a swimming pool, hot tub, or cinema room. Those modern amenities feel very far away in the attic, accessed via a secret bookcase door – make yourself at home with a novel, and try not to get distracted by the views. Or, snuggle up by the fireplace. Nearby, there are plenty of walking trails to satisfy adults, little ones, and dogs alike, and for a more leisurely afternoon, it's just a short walk to the pub in Yorkley.

There are plenty of walks and cycle routes from the doorstep or explore Monmouth or Ross-on-Wye nearby. There are wonderful views from this home’s upper floors and there are two cosy sitting rooms with wood-burning stoves. Outside the terraced garden offers more vistas and plenty of places to relax in the Gloucestershire sun and there’s a barbecue and pizza oven for alfresco dining.

Tucked away, off a country road close to Ledbury, this charming little home comes as quite a surprise. With its rural surroundings and nearby grazing sheep, its bold industrial styling is a real statement, with deep hues on the walls and lots of reclaimed wood. Vaulted ceilings, exposed brickwork and wooden beams add plenty of character but it's touches like the vintage radiators, scaffold pole headboard in the bedroom and the exposed copper pipework in the bathroom that make this place really sing. 

Somewhat upside-down in its layout, the main living space is on the top floor, with direct access to the pretty garden – a private sanctuary. Lounge on the leather sofa, cook in the stylish kitchen area or eat at the table in front of the patio doors. For extra snugness, there's a second lounge on the lower floor, complete with an electric fire for cosy film nights. And while we love the bedroom here, with its sumptuous mattress and faux fur throws, it's the bathroom that stole our hearts – its copper bathtub is a real showstopper.

From here it's a just four-minute drive to the pretty town of Ledbury, and keen walkers will be in their element with the Malvern Hills, the Cotswolds, the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean all within an hour's drive. If you're here during the autumn, you can ask for access to the neighbouring orchard, where you can help yourself to some seasonal fruit, and you can even treat yourself to a private yoga lesson – your host is an experienced instructor.

Searching for somewhere off the beaten track? It’s time to stop scrolling. Nestled in the Forest of Dean, this home has tranquillity at its core. Perfect for a family, four-legged friends included, the fully-fenced garden offers somewhere to sit back and listen to the sound of nature – just keep an eye on children and dogs, as although the trout pond is fenced with gated access, you can never be too safe. Exploring locally, you can take to the trails through the forest where if you’re lucky, you may even spot some wild boar and deer.

The city of Gloucester is 3 miles away and is known for its docks and 11th-century cathedral, while 10 miles away is the town of Cheltenham.

As daylight fades, soak up the sunset from either the courtyard terrace or orchard – if it starts to get a little chilly, the fire pit is ready and waiting to warm you up as you watch the sky dance through an array of colours. Come nightfall, you’re far from civilisation so the sky speckles with a blanket of stars – spot constellations from the warmth of the wood-fired hot tub outside or walk to Michelin-star restaurant The Whitebrook, fifteen minutes away. Wandering through the wildflower-strewn garden you’ll find a picnic bench and barbecue for hazy summer days outdoors and rambling walks across the countryside start from just outside the door. Back inside, we love the collection of holiday reads, tucked into bookshelves below the raised bed in the studio. Toys in the living room and bunkbeds in the second bedroom let you know this place is family-friendly too.

Part of a Grade II listed farmhouse, you can enjoy views across the paddocks and orchards here – expect to see the owners and their dressage horses from time-to-time. Location-wise, this is an outdoor enthusiasts’ dream – with forests, walking and cycling trails, and rock climbing, you’ll always find something to keep you occupied.

This barn conversion is situated on a small working dairy farm in Painswick Valley, less than a twenty-minute drive from Gloucester. Four fishing lakes are within the wider grounds, so keen anglers should bring their rods. If you’d prefer to stay put, there is a courtyard with outside seating for relaxing with a cup of tea. Inside, the wood-burning stove is a welcome addition in the cooler months and flexible sleeping in the fourth bedroom makes this place ideal for any family or group of friends staying together.

Rolling countryside as far as the eye can see and quaint villages tucked into the valleys of Monmouthshire on your doorstep – this converted stone barn is an idyllic getaway. It’s a six-minute drive to the centre of Raglan where you can explore castle ruins, pop in to one of the cosy pubs or stock up at the traditional butcher and the local village shop. Further afield you’ll find the charming market town of Monmouth a fifteen-minute drive away. The home is blissfully quiet, with nothing but the occasional bleat of sheep or whinny of a horse in the surrounding fields. Out here, away from it all, you can see the canopy of stars from the private garden. During the day, this spot is perfect for a family barbecue, with dining on the patio. Inside, it’s open-plan living made cosy with a wood-burning stove set in the old stone wall of the living room. Period features like the old timber frame and arrow-slit windows have been retained, showing off the age of the building. The Aga and Belfast sink in the kitchen keep that farmhouse feel, perfect when paired with farm-fresh produce from the hole-in-the-wall farm shop just down the road.

Many barn conversions across the British countryside tend to be relatively small and cosy affairs, but this example in rural Gloucestershire is a comparative colossus with a wealth of social space and amenities.

There's even a hot tub ready and waiting for a relaxing spot to pass the golden hour. If, however, grey clouds make an appearance at any point, don't fret – there's a snooker table inside, as well as another games room in the external former stables, that should keep guests entertained for a while.

In the local area, the town of Lydney is only eight minutes' drive away when you need supplies, while both Newport and Gloucester lie about forty-five minutes away in the car. There's a wide choice of natural attractions to be discovered nearby as well, ranging from the Forest of Dean and Puzzlewood to Clearwell Caves.

Living on the grounds of a 16th century country-house in the lush green Cotswolds (the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) already creates the ideal setting for nature lovers. Once you settle in with biscuits, fresh scones and fruits on arrival (among other goodies) and befriend the curious chickens, embark on a walk through the rolling Cotswold hills and valleys. While Netflix and cocoa are perfect for rainy days in, there is a whole world out there on sunnier days. The Cotswold Way is a trail that we’d definitely recommend, with plenty of historic pubs along the way, each serving their own collection of local ales. The home is located in Painswick, a village known as The Queen of the Cotswolds and characterised by beautiful narrow streets of honey coloured stone buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants in and around the village, so make sure you ask the host, Hannah, for some recommendations.
