Living on the grounds of a 16th century country-house in the lush green Cotswolds (the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) already creates the ideal setting for nature lovers. Once you settle in with biscuits, fresh scones and fruits on arrival (among other goodies) and befriend the curious chickens, embark on a walk through the rolling Cotswold hills and valleys. While Netflix and cocoa are perfect for rainy days in, there is a whole world out there on sunnier days. The Cotswold Way is a trail that we’d definitely recommend, with plenty of historic pubs along the way, each serving their own collection of local ales. The home is located in Painswick, a village known as The Queen of the Cotswolds and characterised by beautiful narrow streets of honey coloured stone buildings dating back to the fifteenth century. Legend has it that the Devil won’t let a hundredth tree grow. There are all sorts of cafes and restaurants in and around the village, so make sure you ask the host, Hannah, for some recommendations.

Little ones will love the playground across the street, while grown-ups will appreciate being within walking distance of pubs, restaurants, and rural walks.

Back at home, the living room area, although too small for everyone to use at the same time, offers a wood burner in a fireplace that creates a cosy atmosphere.

Low beamed ceilings and a working fireplace await downstairs, while two country-style bedrooms offer snug spaces to rest up after a day of walking the Cotswolds Way or visiting the nearby Westonbirt Arboretum (9 miles). You’ll find plenty of original features here – including a bread oven – as well as a garden area equipped with a barbecue and fire pit that completes the idyllic scene.

Surrounded by miles of rolling Cotswold countryside, guests can settle by the fire in an inviting, pleasantly roomy home dating back to the 17th century. With exposed stonework and overhead beams, its charming period design features lend the cottage plenty of character. You'll be able to choose from two en-suite bedrooms – one of which serves as a super king-size or twin room – as well as both indoor and alfresco dining areas. The National Trust owned valley of Woodchester Park is also a half hour walk away, while the city of Gloucester is half an hour by car.

The surroundings are impressive, part of the 28-acre Matara Estate, where rewilding projects and formal gardens have been in progress for the past 20 years. If you can manage your way out of all that (or even want to) you’ll find yourself in a charming part of the Cotswolds - with Stroud, Tetbury and Westonbirt’s National Arbotoreum nearby and Jane Austen’s beloved Bath just a 35-minute drive away.

Built back in the late 1920s, this cottage combines rustic features, modern conveniences and a smidgeon of rural eccentricity to make for a truly memorable stay. Inside, there are plenty of spots to gather the whole gang together, whether that's on the patchwork furnishings positioned by the wood-burning stove in the snug, sat around the dining room in the conservatory or sprawled out on the long grey corner sofa next to the eye-catching tree-trunk coffee table. This 16th-century cottage is in the heart of the town, opposite the legendary 99 Yew Trees Church with its magnificent yew trees – can you take a wild guess how many?

Once inside you'll feel like a modern-day Henry VII thanks to exposed stonework, regal purple sofas, aged wooden beams and hefty wooden beds. In the second living room you'll find an honesty bar where your host has thoughtfully provided a selection of spirits – all donations made by you for the drinks you make are given to Emmaus, a local homelessness charity.
