Nestled in the rolling hills of Hampshire, this charming flintstone cottage has sprawling views of the surrounding countryside and easy access to walking trails that take you through fields and woods and into picturesque villages with charming pubs. Roaming around this area (including visiting nearby Winchester) feels a bit like taking a step back in history – the air is fresher, the pace of life slower, and the atmosphere much more relaxed. During our visit, we were blown away by host Victoria's friendly nature and attention to detail. She lives on-site in the main house, and on arrival, she'll greet you with homemade jams and fresh eggs from her free-range chickens. Her quintessential English garden is a truly magical place, filled with herbs, flowers and fruit trees – imagine birds singing, deer munching on apples and stargazing under the clear night sky. On clear mornings, open the French doors and enjoy coffee on the terrace in the sunshine. Though there's not heaps of space – there's no living area, and the kitchenette is on the smaller side – it's still a cosy place for a couple to experience an idyllic stay in the country.

This remarkable country mansion has had quite the tumultuous history. The estate dates back to 961 and is listed in the Domesday Book. The land was once home to a priory for the monks of Saint Swithun, until Henry VIII appropriated it for his royal courtiers. For ten years, King Charles II took up residence here with Nell Gwyn and their children, and it continued to pass through the hands of the nobility in the proceeding centuries, gaining a reputation as a hedonists' paradise during that time. After a faithful restoration in the latter half of the twentieth century, it's now open to guests looking for a truly inimitable stay. As you can imagine, there's history at every corner, from the painted ballroom ceiling to the portraits hanging in the hallway. The main living room is a sight to behold, with shelves packed full of books, ornate chandeliers and a grand piano sitting at one side, and the huge banqueting room is equally spectacular. The bedrooms are divided into eight apartments and cottages, many with their own kitchens and living rooms for added privacy. Outside, there are expansive grounds to take a morning constitutional, as well as the River Itchen running through with a boat ready for a paddle. The historic town of Winchester is only twelve minutes away in the car, while the first station on the heritage Watercress Railway line can be reached in under ten.

Whisk your loved one away to this rural retreat on the outskirts of Hungerford, Berkshire. The countryside surroundings are idyllic, especially from the heated pool – it’s exclusively yours to use between June and September. Guests don’t have access to the gardens, though. Inside, there is a lot of room for just two people, but the living area is still cosy with plush sofas. Bear in mind that it’s not suitable for children, including babies. Location wise, Hungerford’s antique shops, unique boutiques, and friendly pubs are just 6 miles away.

Enjoy a leisurely stroll along the water of the harbour and admire the boats in Ocean Village – just a short ten-minute walk from your door. Or, indulge in a shopping spree at West Quay shopping centre – reachable in twelve minutes on foot. 

What’s more, the Red Funnel Ferries that will take you to the Isle of Wight for the day are just a fourteen-minute walk or four-minute drive from this home, and if you find yourself inspired, the apartment’s desk space is the perfect spot to begin a novel set on the island. Then, after a fantastic meal out or a home-cooked dinner, we would love to head up to the shared roof terrace on the sixth floor at sunset to admire the stunning views of the cityscape.

Beautiful wood flooring leads you through the lower level – we love the living room, with a squishy chaise sofa that invites you to sink into it and relax. The quaint wooden shutters on the windows add character to the space – it’s easy to imagine cosy nights snuggled down here after a day out walking in the New Forest National Park or exploring the cobbled streets nearby. 

The kitchen boasts all the mod cons you could wish for and blue cabinetry – a colour scheme that’s carried throughout this cottage with distinctive touches that give a nod to your proximity to the coast. Glamping never looked so good than at this charming cabin nestled within a wild-flower meadow of a 2500-acre family-owned farm estate. Don't be fooled by its unassuming aluminum exterior. Inside, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and lovingly converted by your hosts to provide all the creature comforts. Expect spotless interiors with a well-equipped traditional kitchen complete with a Belfast sink, a neat en-suite shower, and luxurious Egyptian linens on the king-sized bed and bunk beds for the kids. A welcome hamper brimming with local goodies, including milk, eggs, freshly baked bread, and marshmallows for those obligatory s'mores, will help to settle you in. And you'll bank a blissful night's sleep here – your only neighbours are the occasional peacock or deer strutting by. While away your days watching nature unfold outside on the terraces - the private elevated balcony looking out into surrounding woodland (a great spot for den building) is a beautiful place for a cuppa. Or don your hiking boots for a country walk – perhaps with a pit stop at the welcoming local pub (within walking distance) for a swift pint. Just be sure to make it home for dusk as the sun sets over the surrounding countryside. Placed in one of the UK's largest 'dark-sky' areas, there's much stargazing to be done while getting toasty beside the firepit.

You'll find this 18th-century cottage in the heart of the South Downs, nestled on the edge of the illustrious Avington Park. Cosiness personified, the snug sitting room has a crackling wood-burner and squishy sofas that beckon for lounging, either with a glass of wine on chilly evenings or a good book on winter afternoons. A separate drawing room is a perfect spot to gather for family game nights, while the rustic kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up Sunday roasts to enjoy around the dining table. Upstairs, the three comfortable bedrooms promise a good night's sleep. Our favourite is the third bedroom, with its exposed beams and vaulted ceilings – it has two double beds, making it a great option for kids. 

If you're in the mood to pick up the pace, Winchester is a fifteen-minute drive and has a wide array of shops, restaurants and museums. Or take it slow and enjoy a ramble through the countryside, stopping for a pint and some pub grub at the country inns.

Want to recreate a passionate escape à la Bridgerton - just on a much smaller scale? Then we think you'll fall in love with this home in a 400-year-old former gatehouse lodge. Part of the glorious 5,500-acre St Giles House estate, it's been personally and immaculately renovated by the estate's owner (real-life nobility Lady Shaftesbury) to stunning effect. The natural and historical character - original lead windows, log burner and dove grey stone slabs - pack a punch, but it's her Ladyship's keen eye for style that has elevated this home into a truly romantic stay. We're talking about bold splashes of colour (a vibrant coral in the living room and soothing forest green in the bedroom) plus beautiful illustrated artwork and the highest quality Egyptian cotton sheets. This rural location is the perfect place to hide away from the rest of the world, but if you tire of each other's company, the beaches of the Jurassic Coast, the New Forest and the classic British seaside resorts of Poole and Bournemouth are all within a short drive away.

This cosy cabin is the perfect little bolthole for couples wanting to escape to the country. The location right at the heart of the New Forest means you’ll feel miles away from the stresses of daily life – as you fly down country lanes on your bike, you’ll feel your worries melting away. 

The cabin is just outside of Brockenhurst, in an area that feels secluded but isn’t too far from the nearest shops. You can stroll to the pub in fifteen minutes, which is a welcome sight after a day spent hiking the trails. A four-minute drive will get you to beautiful Beaulieu, which is well worth an afternoon strolling around after lunch in a cafe. The abbey is just six minutes from the cabin – the tranquil ruins are always popular with history buffs. 

If you need an ice cream on the beach for it to feel like a holiday, you’re in luck. Fifteen minutes by car will have you on a sandy shore, though we can’t guarantee it’ll be paddling weather. 

For us, the real joy of this cabin is its countryside setting. Walking just five minutes from the front door will see you on walking and cycling trails. When your feet start to feel sore, head back to the cabin to soak in the luxurious claw-foot tub before spending the evening in front of the fire. Absolute bliss.

Well, there's no mystery why this home has made our collection. The apartment is right on the beach in East Wittering, so as you can see, it has great views of the sea from the private sunny balcony as well as most rooms. Yes, the galley kitchen is a bit compact if there are more than two people in there, but it's modern and well-equipped. If you tire of East Wittering Beach (unlikely we know), West Wittering Beach, with its views of Chichester, is less than a ten-minute drive. Otherwise, Chichester Marina is just over ten minutes away in the car, and Goodwood House is around a thirty-minute ride.

A timber cabin surrounded by meadows and woodland might sound like a back-to-basics retreat, but at this home in rural Sussex, guests will have a wealth of luxuries at their disposal.

This is before you've even entered the home, as well. Out on the decked terrace, there's a hot tub from which you can enjoy the tranquillity of the local area, as well as a sofa and swing seat. When the sun goes down, there are festoon lights to turn on, plus a charcoal barbecue and fire pit to keep you fed and warm.

If the temperature dips a little too low, there's a wood-burning fireplace inside the home, as well as plenty of cosy blankets and board games. Inside, the design is rustic in places, as with the weathered wood dining table, but the sleek black kitchen and stylish bedrooms are nothing but modern.

When it comes to filling up your itinerary, there's so much to see and do nearby. The sprawling South Downs National Park starts a minute's drive to the north, while the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sits a similar amount of time in the opposite direction. The town of Bognor Regis and its beach can be reached in twenty-five minutes.

Sandwiched between the South Downs National Park and the Chichester Harbour AONB, it doesn’t get more away-from-it-all country glam than this little Sussex nook. It’s on the edge of a wildlife meadow, so sessions on the private terrace come with the soundtrack of birdsong and a gentle summer breeze. Spot wildlife from the warmth of the private hot tub on the deck, or perhaps from the swing seat, strung up on the porch. 

The interior is a reflection of the wilderness location, with wooden artworks featuring fawns and birdlife on display in the cosy bedrooms. The window seat in the master makes for the perfect reading nook, overlooking the meadow, and there’s a desk in here should you need to work remotely. The vaulted, wood-beam ceiling is twisted with stringed lights for a fairytale effect and there’s plenty of room at the rustic wooden table for the group to dine inside (if you’re not enjoying an alfresco meal on the terrace, that is). Come evening time, the plush sofas in the living room are set around a wood-burning stove.

A historic gatehouse on the grounds of the Shaftesbury Estate in rural Dorset, this petite one-bed lodge has recently undergone a loving refurb by one of the estate owners, Lady Shaftesbury. She obviously has a great eye for design, as her palette of delicious apricot and duck egg blue stylishly updates this vintage cottage into not just a twenty-first-century home, but a home with charm and character. There are plenty of thoughtful touches we found exquisite, from soft dressing gowns to the complementary breakfast hamper – and everything, from Egyptian cotton bedding to the plush sofas, is of boutique hotel quality. The hosts are attentive, meticulously committed to making sure your every whim is met. All in all, this cosy country hideaway is perfect for city escapes, with nearby the great beaches of the Jurassic coast, the New Forest, the National Trust property of Kingston Lacey, cities like Salisbury or Portsmouth and traditional seaside in Bournemouth. And while it feels like one of a kind, a twin lodge and two maisonettes in a neighbouring cottage are also available, so you can bring your friends too (although you might want to keep this little secret to yourself).

If you prefer to take the day at a leisurely pace, head to the welcoming ambiance of Ocean Village. The marina is shaped by vibrant bars and restaurants offering alfresco dining near the water. Sharing delicious food and drink in the warm evenings by the marina is one of the highlights of the city.

However you spend your days, the apartment is made for putting your feet up and relaxing. A large TV shows your favourite films and TV series, whilst the glass dining table is made for sharing meals. For a treat, sit on the balcony with a glass of wine or beer and enjoy the peace and privacy.

Staying in this home is like stepping into a scene from an Austen novel – we can just picture Emma Woodhouse wandering the grounds. Corniced ceilings, antique furniture, country views – there's so much character in this Grade II historic building. The home is part of a grand country estate in Wiltshire, but you'll feel as if you have the whole place to yourself in this private south wing. With the living room’s ample seating in front of the fire and the charming wooden breakfast table, you will be equally comfortable drinking tea or wine in elegance. Make sure to stop by a farm shop on the way to cook up a delicious meal in the kitchen or pre-order fresh or frozen meals to make your stay even easier. Take walks in the gorgeous landscaped gardens, stroll over the bridge on the water, and as night falls gather round the fire pit with drinks. You could spend all day at this country estate, but there's plenty to see in the local area too. You're just a six-minute drive from Stonehenge, and it's worth travelling to Salisbury to visit the historic cathedral and wander the cobbled streets. Where do we start with this home – both the apartment and the location are excellent. Firstly, it’s just a 50-metre stroll across West Cliff Green to the beach steps making this the perfect base for a family-friendly holiday by the sea. There are an array of restaurants and bars within walking distance whilst Bournemouth Pier and the town centre are also accessible by foot. We love the sea views from this place’s private garden and who wouldn’t want to dine or relax in the light-filled conservatory? If you’re a group of eight, then two guests will be sleeping on a sofa bed in the living space, but it’s a spacious room. What a great find this is.

There's nothing quite like escaping to the country for a few days and this converted stable barn is a million miles away from the stresses of day-to-day life. Bright, open and immaculate in every way, it's a place to relax, take a deep breath of fresh, country air and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Set on the owners' farm, and right next to their stables, you'll have a great view of the horses being fed each morning – something that's bound to excite the children. 

Anything but rustic, the interiors here are stylish and high-end, with wide-plank flooring and plenty of fabulous stripped back timber beams. The huge living space, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, is the heart of the home, with squashy velvet sofas, a dining table for six and a delightful kitchen. Equipped with everything you could need, keen cooks will be in their element.

Set in the South Downs National Park, with views across the rolling hills, here you'll have your own private lawned garden area and you're welcome to explore the rest of the grounds. It's a twenty-minute walk into the pretty market town of Bishop's Waltham, with its shops and pubs, and don't miss a visit to the ruins of its historic abbey. The terrace out through the French doors has a glorious view of the River Hamble where you can enjoy paddleboarding, sailing, riverside walks or use as a base for sailing regattas. You can even arrive by boat and moor at the Elephant Boatyard opposite the house. Elsewhere in the large garden, there's a wooden summerhouse with a log burner that brings a touch of apres-ski glamour to this corner of Hampshire, great for cosy sundowners in the winter and family barbecues in summer.

Inside, the preference for wooden interiors continues in the main house, especially in the open-concept living space with its parquet flooring, roof beams and rustic dining table next to a set of tall windows. As well as a huge corner kitchen complete with a sociable island, there are two reception rooms, one with another wood burner for those autumnal evenings.

In the local area, you'll find it easy to enjoy the great outdoors. The River Hamble Country Park is only ten minutes' drive away and is good for a rural walk finished off with a hot chocolate. You're also opposite the Jolly Sailor pub which has roaring log fires in the winter and a great menu for outdoor dining. This is elegant, country living at its very best. Set in the heart of the New Forest National Park, this charming cottage is just a five-minute drive from the pretty village of Burley with its quirky shops, pubs, and tea houses and a twenty-minute drive to the coast.
