This remarkable country mansion has had quite the tumultuous history. The estate dates back to 961 and is listed in the Domesday Book. The land was once home to a priory for the monks of Saint Swithun, until Henry VIII appropriated it for his royal courtiers. For ten years, King Charles II took up residence here with Nell Gwyn and their children, and it continued to pass through the hands of the nobility in the proceeding centuries, gaining a reputation as a hedonists' paradise during that time. After a faithful restoration in the latter half of the twentieth century, it's now open to guests looking for a truly inimitable stay. As you can imagine, there's history at every corner, from the painted ballroom ceiling to the portraits hanging in the hallway. The main living room is a sight to behold, with shelves packed full of books, ornate chandeliers and a grand piano sitting at one side, and the huge banqueting room is equally spectacular. The bedrooms are divided into eight apartments and cottages, many with their own kitchens and living rooms for added privacy. Outside, there are expansive grounds to take a morning constitutional, as well as the River Itchen running through with a boat ready for a paddle. The historic town of Winchester is only twelve minutes away in the car, while the first station on the heritage Watercress Railway line can be reached in under ten.

Glamping never looked so good than at this charming cabin nestled within a wild-flower meadow of a 2500-acre family-owned farm estate. Don't be fooled by its unassuming aluminum exterior. Inside, the cabin is surprisingly spacious and lovingly converted by your hosts to provide all the creature comforts. Expect spotless interiors with a well-equipped traditional kitchen complete with a Belfast sink, a neat en-suite shower, and luxurious Egyptian linens on the king-sized bed and bunk beds for the kids. A welcome hamper brimming with local goodies, including milk, eggs, freshly baked bread, and marshmallows for those obligatory s'mores, will help to settle you in. And you'll bank a blissful night's sleep here – your only neighbours are the occasional peacock or deer strutting by. While away your days watching nature unfold outside on the terraces - the private elevated balcony looking out into surrounding woodland (a great spot for den building) is a beautiful place for a cuppa. Or don your hiking boots for a country walk – perhaps with a pit stop at the welcoming local pub (within walking distance) for a swift pint. Just be sure to make it home for dusk as the sun sets over the surrounding countryside. Placed in one of the UK's largest 'dark-sky' areas, there's much stargazing to be done while getting toasty beside the firepit.

Once a coach house, this luxurious yet quirky spot in Chichester would suit a couple looking for a small-town getaway. A working clock takes pride of place on the home’s old facade, surrounded by white cladding and red brick. The walled garden out front welcomes you with an alfresco dining area – perfect for a summer cocktail or two – and a patio bursting with flora and illuminated with strings of lights at sundown. Stepping inside, the living room is made cosy with a wood-burning stove and you can choose between the plush leather or soft velvet sofa to lounge away the evening. It’s the quirky touches that really grabbed us though – brass pineapple lampstands and gnarled wooden beams on display in the bedroom. You’re in the heart of old Chichester here, a ten-minute walk to the 12th-century cathedral and amongst shambling streets with coffee shops, pubs and restaurants a-plenty. If exploring the outdoors is more your scene, the South Downs National Park is a five-minute drive, and the wild-life filled trails of Chichester Harbour AONB is a ten-minute drive.

Want to recreate a passionate escape à la Bridgerton - just on a much smaller scale? Then we think you'll fall in love with this home in a 400-year-old former gatehouse lodge. Part of the glorious 5,500-acre St Giles House estate, it's been personally and immaculately renovated by the estate's owner (real-life nobility Lady Shaftesbury) to stunning effect. The natural and historical character - original lead windows, log burner and dove grey stone slabs - pack a punch, but it's her Ladyship's keen eye for style that has elevated this home into a truly romantic stay. We're talking about bold splashes of colour (a vibrant coral in the living room and soothing forest green in the bedroom) plus beautiful illustrated artwork and the highest quality Egyptian cotton sheets. This rural location is the perfect place to hide away from the rest of the world, but if you tire of each other's company, the beaches of the Jurassic Coast, the New Forest and the classic British seaside resorts of Poole and Bournemouth are all within a short drive away.

Tangerine Lodge

Back in the 16th century, this manor home was managed by the Clerk of the Privy Seal to Henry VIII and Elizabeth I. And this apartment within the manor extolls all the extravagance of a Tudor era country retreat. Cross the Italian courtyard to enter and, stepping inside, you’ll find a charming living room adorned with oil paintings and set around an old fireplace. Original wood floors run from here into the kitchen, which has plenty of natural light from the sash window.

The jewel in this apartment’s crown has to be the master bedroom. Decked out in Tudor-style splendour, you can drift off to sleep in the hand-carved four-poster bed, swathed with satin curtains. An exposed brick fireplace would have welcomed weary travellers back in the day and the separate seating area is particularly atmospheric when lit by candlelight. Four further bedrooms all have their own character and style in midnight-blue, sage-green and coral, all packed with plenty of old-world charm. 

Rest, Weary Traveller

You'll find this 18th-century cottage in the heart of the South Downs, nestled on the edge of the illustrious Avington Park. Cosiness personified, the snug sitting room has a crackling wood-burner and squishy sofas that beckon for lounging, either with a glass of wine on chilly evenings or a good book on winter afternoons. A separate drawing room is a perfect spot to gather for family game nights, while the rustic kitchen has everything you'll need to rustle up Sunday roasts to enjoy around the dining table. Upstairs, the three comfortable bedrooms promise a good night's sleep. Our favourite is the third bedroom, with its exposed beams and vaulted ceilings – it has two double beds, making it a great option for kids. 

If you're in the mood to pick up the pace, Winchester is a fifteen-minute drive and has a wide array of shops, restaurants and museums. Or take it slow and enjoy a ramble through the countryside, stopping for a pint and some pub grub at the country inns.

A timber cabin surrounded by meadows and woodland might sound like a back-to-basics retreat, but at this home in rural Sussex, guests will have a wealth of luxuries at their disposal.

This is before you've even entered the home, as well. Out on the decked terrace, there's a hot tub from which you can enjoy the tranquillity of the local area, as well as a sofa and swing seat. When the sun goes down, there are festoon lights to turn on, plus a charcoal barbecue and fire pit to keep you fed and warm.

If the temperature dips a little too low, there's a wood-burning fireplace inside the home, as well as plenty of cosy blankets and board games. Inside, the design is rustic in places, as with the weathered wood dining table, but the sleek black kitchen and stylish bedrooms are nothing but modern.

When it comes to filling up your itinerary, there's so much to see and do nearby. The sprawling South Downs National Park starts a minute's drive to the north, while the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty sits a similar amount of time in the opposite direction. The town of Bognor Regis and its beach can be reached in twenty-five minutes.

But should you crave a change of pace, the charming village of Burley, with its cosy pubs and cafes, is just a mile’s stroll away. Back home, there are all the cottage-core essentials, including a wood-burning stove for winter nights and a fire pit and barbecue out on the private terrace for summer evenings. Inside, tufted leather sofas invite you to sit back as a family amidst the striking equine artworks as a fire crackles in the wood-burning stove. We particularly love the barn-style sliding doors that offer a reminder of the building’s former life as a stable. The indoor kitchen is a delight to cook in, designed country-style with a big range cooker, yet modern feeling in slate grey. If you want to get out and explore the area you’ll find a pleasing mix of rural walking routes in the surrounding hills, and the quaint coffee shops, local pubs and shops of Bosham village a fifteen-minute walk away. The centre of Chichester is just a ten-minute drive away too.

Here, you’ll be able to enjoy all that this area has in store, with miles of nature walks, water sports and activities and some excellent pubs to be discovered. 

The inside offers plenty of space for everyone to find a quiet nook for relaxing with a holiday read, as well as for coming together and enjoying communal feasts and evenings of movies. With two living rooms – one on each floor – it doesn’t even have to be the same movie! 

Delicious family meals can be put together with ease in the well-equipped kitchen and savoured at the indoor dining table or outside on the large patio, where you can feast with the view of the sea before you. 

After a night of restful sleep which awaits in the six comfy bedrooms, wake up feeling restored and ready for more coastal adventures. 

Pebbles & Wood

Surrounded by the beauty of the South Downs, this converted barn is as contemporary as it is cosy. Outside, you'll have plenty of space to soak up the sunshine and admire the scenery. Head indoors, and you'll find a living space with beamed ceilings, a wood-burning stove, and an open-plan layout that makes socialising a dream. We think it'll suit families down to the ground, especially since one well-behaved pup is welcome to tag along. With Cheriton, Winchester, and Southampton all within driving distance, we expect there'll be plenty of adventures further afield, too.

Beauworth's Finest

When we boast that this amazing home is beachfront, we really mean it, with direct access to Bracklesham beach via the garden, you really couldn’t get much closer. Wander along the pebbled shore with your four-legged friend and listen to the crunch of stones beneath your feet, brave a dip in the sea, or even challenge the kids to build sculptures from the stones. 

Built in the 1920s around a classic railway carriage, this home has been extensively modernised, and expanded over the years but still holds much of that original charm. We would love nothing more than to wake up here to the soothing sound of the waves and seagulls calls before enjoying breakfast on the balcony to truly admire the views. 

Spend the day relaxing at home, reading a good book on the terrace while the children entertain themselves in the playroom which is filled with kids’ books and toys, or taking a dip in the swimming pool. 

Head out for the day and visit West Wittering’s stunning Blue Flag Beach – a short six-minute drive away – for a sandy beach experience, and let the children play in the salty waves and build castles on the sand. Visit Chichester Cathedral – a twenty-seven-minute drive away, or spend a day at the races at Goodwood horse racing course or Goodwood Motor Circuit, reachable by car in twenty-nine minutes and twenty-three minutes, respectively. 

In the evening, dine together as a family, and then when the children are all in bed, why not end the day with a cool glass of wine on the balcony as you enjoy the outstanding sea views.

There are plenty of thoughtful touches we found exquisite, from soft dressing gowns to the complementary breakfast hamper – and everything, from Egyptian cotton bedding to the plush sofas, is of boutique hotel quality. The hosts are attentive, meticulously committed to making sure your every whim is met. All in all, this cosy country hideaway is perfect for city escapes, with nearby the great beaches of the Jurassic coast, the New Forest, the National Trust property of Kingston Lacey, cities like Salisbury or Portsmouth and traditional seaside in Bournemouth. And while it feels like one of a kind, a twin lodge and two maisonettes in a neighbouring cottage are also available, so you can bring your friends too (although you might want to keep this little secret to yourself).

They say that first impressions are everything and we defy anybody not to be wowed upon laying eyes upon this Georgian property close to the West Sussex – the handsome brickwork, large sash windows and manicured front garden give off a real air of grandeur.

We're happy to report that this attention to appearance continues inside. The design treads the fine balance between heritage and modernity rather adroitly, with antique furnishings and decorative items sitting quite happily alongside more contemporary artworks and a smart kitchen. As well as looking the part, you won't struggle to get cosy in the pair of living rooms, complete with shelves packed full of books, a fireplace and a grand piano next to the bay window.

Nor will there be any difficulty in finding somewhere to unwind in the large garden during bursts of warm weather. Little ones will love bouncing about on the trampoline, while there's a large alfresco table that is the perfect setting for an alfresco dinner party – as well as a barbecue to help make that a reality.

If you're ever in need of ingredients, there's a farm shop just next door to the home. You don't have to go far to find distractions, either. The seaside village of Selsey is just over five minutes' drive away and there's a great choice of beaches in the local area, including West Wittering about twenty minutes away in the car. The cathedral city of Chichester takes a similar amount of time northwards, too.

This cosy cabin is the perfect little bolthole for couples wanting to escape to the country. The location right at the heart of the New Forest means you’ll feel miles away from the stresses of daily life – as you fly down country lanes on your bike, you’ll feel your worries melting away. 

The cabin is just outside of Brockenhurst, in an area that feels secluded but isn’t too far from the nearest shops. You can stroll to the pub in fifteen minutes, which is a welcome sight after a day spent hiking the trails. A four-minute drive will get you to beautiful Beaulieu, which is well worth an afternoon strolling around after lunch in a cafe. The abbey is just six minutes from the cabin – the tranquil ruins are always popular with history buffs. 

If you need an ice cream on the beach for it to feel like a holiday, you’re in luck. Fifteen minutes by car will have you on a sandy shore, though we can’t guarantee it’ll be paddling weather. 

For us, the real joy of this cabin is its countryside setting. Walking just five minutes from the front door will see you on walking and cycling trails. When your feet start to feel sore, head back to the cabin to soak in the luxurious claw-foot tub before spending the evening in front of the fire. Absolute bliss. 


In The Potting Shed

This address might look effortlessly stylish on the surface, but look a little closer and you'll find that all the home comforts are present and correct. In the living room, for instance, there's a log-burner that you can get crackling while you loll about on the plush sofas facing the warmth. Up in the master bedroom — itself painted in a sultry tone of navy blue — there's an eye-catching copper bathtub that will have you scheduling a long uninterrupted soak into your itinerary. The rest of the house is dotted with house plants — especially in the light and airy kitchen-dining room — but if you want a bit more horticulture, head out into the private patio space, which is lined with flourishing beds and potted foliage. There's plenty of seating out here for taking full advantage of bursts of unseasonable weather, as well as a barbecue in case you're truly lucky. Even better is the fact that Chichester's main landmarks are within such easy walking distance. The Cathedral takes five minutes to reach, as does the town's castle.

Courtyard Breakfast

This pet-friendly barn conversion in West Sussex is perfect for a couple or solo traveller seeking a peaceful rural retreat. A rock garden and tended lawn provide ample opportunity for sundowners and alfresco meals, while inside, cosy country-style decor and beamed ceilings provide plenty of English charm. You’ll need to climb a flight of stairs to reach the mezzanine bedroom but waking up to apex views of the surrounding nature is a fair reward. The bus stop at the end of the road offers regular services to Chichester, while the village of Funtington – right on the home’s doorstep – has a selection of restaurants and pubs to enjoy.
