Spill out into the large open plan living space of the main house (with three bedrooms) and cook up a hearty feast – there’s room for each and every one of you (and a few extra guests) around that magnificent banquet table. But if you'd rather have a night off cooking, head to your nearest traditional inn for upper-crust grub and a warm welcome (a nineteen-minute drive away).

A home to enjoy in all seasons – take things outside into the vast gardens for a barbecue and a muck about on the gently sloping lawns when the sun shines. And in chiller months, hunker down beside the fire and savour the views from the deep, sumptuous sofas instead.

Escape to this idyllic Herefordshire retreat, perched on top of a hill beside an iron-age fort and offering breathtaking countryside vistas. Perfect for a multi-generational family stay (with two dogs in tow), alongside the main barn, there's a smaller stone barn (connected on the first floor) offering a snug, two further bedrooms and a well-equipped playroom. If you can lure yourselves from the enclosed private garden, you're just a five-minute drive from the historic market town of Bromyard with delicatessens, butchers and pubs for a taste of county life. 

The Vintage Farmhouse

If you love a ramble through the countryside, then you'll adore this little cottage. Set on a working farm on the border between Herefordshire and Shropshire, you'll find plenty of scenic treks right on your doorstep. The location has a lot going for it besides walking – Ludlow, Hereford, and local cider distilleries are also within driving distance. Back home, the design is modern while maintaining the building's hayloft heritage – think exposed beams and original brickwork. A small patio is perfect for sundowners. The owner is also happy to arrange access to a tennis court and fishing on the River Arrow upon request.

Hay Jude

Set on the outskirts of picturesque Quenington, this 18th-century cottage is a calm haven for those looking to explore the Cotswolds at a relaxed pace. It's bright and rustic, the kind of homely interior you'd expect from a historic home, but it doesn't feel outdated. In fact, they lean into modernity here – you'll find fast wi-fi, a smart tv, and an electric vehicle charging here. The vibrant greenery covering the home echoes the surrounding landscape, which you can explore more closely on walking and hiking trails. Two pubs are within walking distance, and the River Coln and knights gate aren't much further.  

The Chimney Sweeper

On the border between England and Wales, this little eco hut sits in the splendidly named hamlet of Burlingjobb. There’s nothing but the cheep and pip of birdsong and the occasional bleat of a lamb here. The curve of the cabin’s roof reflects Hanter Hill opposite, and each cabinet and window frame has been crafted from local cedar and douglas fir. The living room and kitchen has everything you need to unwind in an evening, including a hand-made kitchen and sofa tucked under the gorgeous floating staircase. Heating comes courtesy of infra-red panels, a nod to the environment and, as the cabin is kept cosy, you can select a book from the little library and take things back to analogue. Glass doors lead out to a deck with a fire pit and barbecue. The real highlight is the master bedroom, dappled with botanica and with a picture-frame window looking out over the garden. It’s here you’ll find the longest claw-footed tub we think we’ve ever seen – perfect for a soak after a day hiking up to Hanter Hill or the tumbling cascade of Water Break-Its-Neck waterfall.

Hergest Lee

This delightful holiday home can be found on an equine stud farm in the quaint village of Birdwood. Perfect for a rural escape, it’s close to the Cotswolds and the beautiful countryside of Gloucestershire. You’ll also be just a short drive from Gloucester, where you can shop, dine out, and visit the stunning cathedral. The stylish home features an attractive open-plan living and dining space, with a well-equipped, modern kitchen. There are two gardens, one with a front patio for dining in warmer months. Best of all, there’s a hot tub, ideal after a hike. 

Birdwood Hideaway

Nestled in the heart of Cold Aston village, this 18th-century, Grade II listed home promises a tranquil escape in the Cotswolds. Packed full of character, this cottage seamlessly marries traditional with contemporary – just mind your head on those beautiful old beams and sloping ceilings. When you’re ready to unwind, pick between the roll top bath in the main bedroom, the wood burner for a cosy night in, or take a bottle of wine out to the courtyard to enjoy the peace and quiet of your village location. Locally, it’s a five-minute drive to Bourton-on-the-Water – affectionately named the ‘Venice of the Cotswolds’ – which is well worth a visit. 


Stone & Oak

With the flexibility to sleep up to 24 people, this magical country house is all set up for special events, gatherings of friends and family, activity holidays and more. With views across the Wye Valley, it's set on five acres of pristine land and has nine bedrooms for you to choose between – either in the beautifully restored and extended 17th-Century farmhouse or the stunning new guest annexe. 

Lovers of interior design will have a field day here. It's been impeccably put together by its owner Kari, a professional designer, with nods to traditional country chic, contemporary cool and even Antipodean modern rustic – Kari grew up in Australia. The main house having been extended, the old stable unit was transformed into an architect-designed annexe with a series of split-level suites that wouldn't look out of place in a boutique hotel in Shoreditch.

The huge, 40ft kitchen is equipped with everything you'll need to cook for your group, with an incredible four ovens, five hobs and two dishwashers, or you can take the hard work out of it by hiring a private chef. You'll have four main living spaces with enough room to get together as a large group or enjoy a bit of privacy, and there are all sorts of outdoor seating spots – including a fire pit area, dining terrace and an Aussie-style shack enjoying views across the valley.

Built for entertaining, you'll have a games barn where you can play table tennis, work out on the gym equipment and grab some garden games, as well as a room perfect for group activities. There's even a wood-fired hot tub, a children's natural play area and private fields for you to explore.

Just a few miles from the book town of Hay-on-Wye, it's easy to explore the Welsh border from here, and hiking, cycling and canoeing are all popular local attractions. And if you fancy an action-packed break, your host can put together a unique itinerary for your group. You're bound to make memories that last a lifetime.    

The Memory Jar
