In a secluded spot down a single-track lane, this contemporary barn is a welcome surprise. Renovated in the style of Caruso St John (the famed architects behind the Tate Modern), it's a striking tribute to modern, eco-friendly design – solar panels and a heat source pump power the heating and hot water. The inside is just as dramatic, with copper light fittings, high-design furniture and large picture windows that make the most of the garden views. All the mod-cons are accounted for, including rain showers, a home-cinema projector and underfloor heating to keep chilly toes at bay. Throw a log on the wood-burner for extra cosiness and snuggle up in the window seat with a good book. Outside there's even more to love, including a private pool, leafy garden and a calisthenic gym space that works as a yoga or kickboxing studio. After a morning workout and a dip in the pool, enjoy a walk around Manor Bottom, or if you want to stretch your legs even more, the seaside town of Ventnor is a forty-minute walk away. But our favourite part were the hosts. The amount of love Steven and Agnieszka put into making their guests' stay extra special is quite something. No detail has been overlooked, be it organic toiletries, a welcome hamper filled with local jams and chutneys or arranging on-site massages. They even go the extra mile to carefully curate books and music for each individual guest – safe to say, you'll be in excellent hands.

The Granaries

A five-minute walk from Brook’s rugged coastal path and golden beach, the fresh sea air is never far from this isolated cottage. In a huge old farmhouse-style building, your quarters have tons of countryside character. Timber beams support the high vaulted ceilings, warm wooden flooring can be found throughout, and original, rustic barn-like doors keep things traditional. That said, every modern convenience is available, although some have a vintage edge like the red Smeg fridge. Leisure certainly hasn’t been forgotten about either, with board games and an outdoor play area to keep the whole family entertained. While the little ones romp in the garden, relax on the patio with a pot of tea. And when dinnertime strikes, you can light up the barbecue to dine alfresco on a balmy summer evening. As the home is located in the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (one of only forty-six such spots in the UK), the prized landscape is exceptional for walking, fossil hunting, and windsurfing. But if you do fancy something a little more urban, the island’s main town of Cowes is just a twenty-five-minute drive.

Nestled in Niton on the Isle of Wight, this restored heritage building is an ideal getaway for families or groups of friends. While the garden is shared with neighbouring cottages, a private courtyard awaits your alfresco dinners. The home is modern and practical, though some of the decor feels slightly dated – besides, it’s the setting that makes this place so unique. The signal is patchy here, but we think you’ll probably be too busy exploring to really notice. Explore Carisbrooke Castle, Brading Roman Villa, and Arreton Old Village, or take a stroll along Castlehaven Beach – it’s dog-friendly for those bringing their furry companions.

And Solent's quayside is even closer –⁠ a six-minute stroll, to be precise.

In winter months, curl up beside the crackling fire in the first-floor drawing room –⁠ that chesterfield sofa has your name all over it. Then gather your ensemble in the elegant dining room with a blazing hearth at its heart to host a glamourous dinner party. Everything you need to flex your culinary muscles is in the made-for-action kitchen, and the Sonos speakers will set the ambience. 

On long summer evenings, grab a glass of something chilled and head out through the arched doors into the stunning courtyard garden. Blissfully quiet, it feels like your very own private oasis.

And when it's finally time to bank some beauty sleep, one big hug of a bed awaits upstairs in the three serene bedrooms. The kitchen boasts all the mod cons you could wish for and blue cabinetry – a colour scheme that’s carried throughout this cottage with distinctive touches that give a nod to your proximity to the coast. For nights in, you can rustle up a delicious home-cooked meals and in the summer months, pour yourself a glass of wine and settle down on the terrace to enjoy your dinner alfresco. 

For days out you’re perfectly placed to wander the High Street's shops, explore the old town quay or even hop on the ferry to head over to the Isle of Wight. With so much to do and your cottage waiting to welcome you home, you’ll enjoy a memorable stay.

Five minutes on foot from the rugged Brook coastal path and its picturesque beach, you’ll love coming home to this cosy, cottage-like apartment after a windswept day by the shores. In a rustic, stone farmhouse, this home has a wonderfully rural character from the offset. With original features of the building standing strong, such as chunky timber ceiling beams, wooden floors, and barn-style doors, we love the traditional feel of the home. The soft furnishings make the living space warm and inviting, with natural light streaming in through skylights. Your host has also made sure that you can keep the whole family entertained – the playground outside has a slide and trampoline for the kids, as well as table tennis (which might end up being an activity for ‘big kids’ too). Light up the barbecue and sit out on the patio for a grill and a glass of wine, before a night of stargazing.

You'll find it in the south of the Isle of Wight, with an unbeatable clifftop location and extraordinary views down to the wind-whipped coastline. The house itself is designed to feel like a cabin with the comforts of modern touches. A bright living room and kitchen provide cosy convenience, yet the home comes to life in the cute kitchen garden and sprawling outside space. 

The kitchen garden is where we suggest spending sunrise or sunset. It offers one of the prettiest views on the island, and it's shaped in comfy seats for unbridled luxury. 

Adjacent to the kitchen garden, you'll find a diverse room tailored to all activities. You can fire up the projector on colder nights to watch your favourite film, or use it as a yoga studio in the mornings for a wholesome start to the day.

How you spend that day is all up to you. You're welcome to use the home's four bikes to explore the gorgeous scenery, or mosey over to the vineyards to pick up some wine for the evenings. 

If you prefer your adventures on the water, your host provides access to kayaks and paddle boards so you can traverse the water. There's also a private jetty, an idyllic spot to sit with a slice of pizza from the pizza oven and bask in the serenity. You also have exclusive access to the vineyards – and there's even a helipad should you wish to arrive in style!

This contemporary home is located close to Lymington on the outskirts of the New Forest National Park. We can't get enough of this location. Whether you're into coastal strolls, woodland wanders, or a bit of both, you'll be well-placed to explore. Back home, the modern design is bright and breezy. The kitchen is ideal for whipping up family dinners – in the summer, you can enjoy them on the small patio. Upstairs, three comfortable bedrooms await, including a bunk bed for little ones. You're also welcome to bring one well-behaved pet for an additional fee.

This restored heritage building in Niton, Isle of Wight sits to the east of the lighthouse site and offers a perfect retreat for a family gathering or a group of friends. While you’ll share a garden with the neighbouring cottages, you’ll have a private courtyard to share dinners alfresco. The home is a little dated but perfectly practical and comfortable for those seeking a unique location. The signal is patchy here, so it’s really a place to hit reset. Nearby, you can enjoy exploring Carisbrooke Castle, Brading Roman Villa, Arreton Old Village or take a stroll around Rosemary Vineyard. And if you’re bringing your furry friend, you’ll find plenty of dog-friendly beaches.

This old farmhouse was built in 1820 and sits in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on the Isle of Wight. It's a seven-minute walk to Brook Beach if you want to take in the sea air, and the surrounding hills and valleys are filled with walking trails. Views from the farmhouse take in the patchwork of fields around you. On the outside, it's typically 19th-century with a stone facade and pitch-roofed doorway. We were taken aback at how modern it is inside, with soothing sofas in stone grey and sleek Scandi-wood floors. The custom-designed kitchen is a haven for cooking with beautiful granite-topped counters, a big range cooker and a Belfast sink. Breakfast is a sunny affair in the dining room with its curved bay of windows. From here, you can head out the French doors to the private patio, where a picnic bench provides a spot for a morning cup of tea and a built-in brick barbecue means summer dining outdoors. Or, head to the communal gardens and let the kids play in the fort, swings, slide and trampoline.

This Victorian home right on the coast has several surprises up its sleeve. Recently renovated, it's a listed building bursting with character and quirky architectural features – like the crenellated facade and the Gothic windows – but it's been brought bang up to date with contemporary interiors and every mod con. The living space is big and bright, with plenty of seating for larger groups, and there's a dining table that will comfortably seat ten. When you've all unpacked and made yourselves at home, you can head to the games room for a pool tournament in front of the 1970s jukebox, or stream a movie in the comfy cinema room. And that’s just indoors. The outdoor space has been designed to make the most of the great Isle of Wight climate, with a barbecue and dining spot, a lounge area, a superb little garden pod for the kids to play in with a TV and games, and a fire pit. Best of all, the home is just a stroll away from the seafront with its beach, mini-golf, sailing, swimming pool, trampolines and everything else associated with a Great British seaside break. Venture further by car, bus or bike and you’re soon in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, or riding a steam railway, visiting a Roman villa or a stately home.

With the preponderance of wood in the walls and furnishings, as well as the chalet-style kitchen and warm lighting throughout, there's a distinct Americana style to this recently converted home. However, it's actually to be found right on England's south coast and the seaside at the village of Milford-On-Sea can be reached in just five minutes in the car. Despite this proximity to the coast, the cabin is more rural in feel. For a start, it's located down a quiet country lane and there's a large garden surrounding complete with fruit trees — which guests are welcome to pick at the right time of year. Out among this manicured outside space, there's also a barbecue and a fire pit that will see you through long summer evenings. When you want to more of the charming locale, there's a pair of bicycles that guests are free to borrow. Hurst Castle takes just over twenty-five minutes to reach if you're feeling like a bit of a challenge and there are plenty of nearby pubs to reward yourselves with well-earned liquid refreshment.

Shingle Beach

This cosy cabin is the perfect little bolthole for couples wanting to escape to the country. The location right at the heart of the New Forest means you’ll feel miles away from the stresses of daily life – as you fly down country lanes on your bike, you’ll feel your worries melting away. 

The cabin is just outside of Brockenhurst, in an area that feels secluded but isn’t too far from the nearest shops. You can stroll to the pub in fifteen minutes, which is a welcome sight after a day spent hiking the trails. A four-minute drive will get you to beautiful Beaulieu, which is well worth an afternoon strolling around after lunch in a cafe. The abbey is just six minutes from the cabin – the tranquil ruins are always popular with history buffs. 

If you need an ice cream on the beach for it to feel like a holiday, you’re in luck. Fifteen minutes by car will have you on a sandy shore, though we can’t guarantee it’ll be paddling weather. 

For us, the real joy of this cabin is its countryside setting. Walking just five minutes from the front door will see you on walking and cycling trails. When your feet start to feel sore, head back to the cabin to soak in the luxurious claw-foot tub before spending the evening in front of the fire. Absolute bliss.

In the popular South Coast resort of Southsea, Portsmouth, you will find this fantastic home which boasts easy walking distance to the beach, a games room, a cinema room, and an outdoor terrace complete with a hot tub. So, whether the sun is shining during the summer or it’s a typical British day filled with rain, there is always something fun to do here. 

Spend your days on the beach or explore the vibrant city of Portsmouth with its fantastic outlet shopping at Gunwharf Quays – reachable in less than ten minutes by car. This impression continues when you head inside and spot the chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, the ornamental fireplaces and the lacquer dining table. The kitchen is rather more rustic in appearance, with exposed brickwork working nicely alongside the skylight constructed out of the sail from a boat — a thoughtful nod to the region's nautical culture. Step out of the French doors and you'll find yourself in the home's garden, which comes with tidy plant rows, an alfresco seating area and a hot tub for those warm summer evenings — or even those chilly winter ones if you're feeling hardy. The home's location in the seaside village of Hamble-le-Rice presents a plethora of distractions to keep your guests entertained. It's possible to see the Hamble River rolling on by from the kitchen and bedrooms windows, and if it gives you the inspiration to see it up close, it only takes two minutes to walk to the historic waterfront with its quay and marinas. The port city of Southampton is only a twenty-minute drive away, too.

This stunning home is tucked away within the grounds of a country club on the outskirts of Titchfield, Hampshire. It’s in a quiet spot next to a paddock and is close to the Titchfield Haven Nature Reserve, a marvellous spot for bird-watching. Portsmouth’s beaches and harbour are only 12 miles away, making it a great spot for a day trip. When you’re not out exploring, you’ll be glad to have such a peaceful home-from-home. The open-plan living and dining space has high ceilings and wooden beams, with a wood-burning stove for chilly weather. In spring and summer, you can open the bi-fold doors and spend time on the patio.

It has large sitting room and dining area, perfect for parties of family and friends to spend time together over lively brunches and long, indulgent dinners. Outside you'll find a lush garden with green lawns for picnicking and a terrace where you can unwind in the tranquil Hampshire countryside. If you're visiting during the summer months, a yurt is available to fit in even more guests. The peaceful Beaulieu River is right on your doorstep, where you can do some wild swimming or even take a boat taxi downstream. If you find yourself wanting some more action, you can hike, cycle or even kayak through the national park, before stopping off at one of the traditional local pubs for some hearty local fare.

Bright, open and immaculate in every way, it's a place to relax, take a deep breath of fresh, country air and enjoy the company of your loved ones. Set on the owners' farm, and right next to their stables, you'll have a great view of the horses being fed each morning – something that's bound to excite the children. 

Anything but rustic, the interiors here are stylish and high-end, with wide-plank flooring and plenty of fabulous stripped back timber beams. The huge living space, surrounded on three sides by floor-to-ceiling windows, is the heart of the home, with squashy velvet sofas, a dining table for six and a delightful kitchen. Equipped with everything you could need, keen cooks will be in their element.

Set in the South Downs National Park, with views across the rolling hills, here you'll have your own private lawned garden area and you're welcome to explore the rest of the grounds. It's a twenty-minute walk into the pretty market town of Bishop's Waltham, with its shops and pubs, and don't miss a visit to the ruins of its historic abbey. And it's less than a half-hour drive to both Southampton and Portsmouth.
