This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. After looking around this home, you probably wouldn't guess that the property has been standing for more than a quarter of a millennium, but that's a testament to the care and attention that has gone into the renovation.

Aside from the odd exposed stone wall and the original fireplace, the interior is as contemporary as they come, but great importance is placed on cosiness, too. Underfloor heating and a wood-burner will get you warmed up once again after bracing country walks, while the huge kitchen has plenty of space for whipping up hearty feasts. If the weather's playing ball, you can even eat outside, which will give you an opportunity to admire the bucolic scenery.

As well as this private patio and barbecue, there's a shared fire pit on the grounds around which to gather once darkness falls. Guests also get access to a shared games room, which has tables for ping-pong and pool, board games and toys, as well as a small shop selling meat from the surrounding farm and locally produced artisanal products.

Sitting deep within the Peak District, you're certainly not short of walking routes in the local area, plus a couple of historic attractions — Magpie Mine is only a ten-minute walk, for instance. Go for a walk to the historic riverside village of Bidford-on-Avon, sixteen minutes on foot, where you'll find an array of charming pubs, restaurants, shops, and a picturesque church built in 1250. Or visit Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, around a twenty-five-minute drive, while stunning Warwick Castle is a few minutes more in the car. The magnificent Cotswolds are on your doorstep too – Hidcote Manor Garden, near Chipping Campden, just over a fifteen-minute ride, which has one of Britain's most influential Arts and Crafts gardens.

The barn sleeps eight guests (maximum six adults) and features four bedrooms, including one en-suite bathroom, two en-suite shower rooms, and one family shower room. With 5 acres at your disposal, this rustic cottage in the Peak District is the ideal escape for anyone looking to indulge in a slice of rural peace. Not so rural, however, that you can’t easily nip into the Georgian gem that is Ashbourne. Explore the local coffee shops and markets whilst you’re there by strolling the cobbled streets and admiring the architecture. The award-winning Callow Hall is five minutes away, and Thor’s Cave – one of the beautiful hiking trails of the area – can be found at the other end of a twenty-minute drive. 

But we bet we had you at rural peace, didn’t we? You’d be right to embrace it and there’s no better way than soaking up all that quiet from your position on the sunlounger.
