Unwind in the foliage-filled conservatory, lie on the sofa in the living room where a traditional Persian rug pops against a terracotta floor, or take a walk amidst the daffodils in the garden outside. If you can ever peel yourself away from this magical gem, Newark historic market town – known for its indie shops, antiques and old buildings – is only a fifteen-minute drive from your door. One thing’s for sure, this spot will satisfy the soul.

Found in the centre of town, a thirteen-minute walk from Lincoln's iconic Cathedral, this large family home has been restored with comfort and style in mind. Especially so, given the size of the two lounges. Add the dining area into the equation, and you can see how there's plenty of room for everyone to carve out their own space. Two pull-out beds and two single sofa beds keep sleeping arrangements flexible, although these are best for children as they're on the smaller side. 

Step out through the bifold doors onto a large patio area with garden furniture for seamless indoor and outdoor dining. Down from the patio is a large grass area and lower patio area with a Hot Tub suitable for 6-7 people. This is the perfect garden for summer socials and BBQs.

This unique home was a bakery in the 1950s but it was converted by the host's parents, who both worked at the Lincoln School of Art. As well as being a day job, they also had a strong interest in artistic endeavours and they filled the interior with hand-crafted ceramics, fabrics and paintings. Today, much of their collection remains and it lends the feel of part-museum, part-period home — especially with the hardwood floors and wood-burning fireplace. The large garden is equally special too, with a pond full of frogs and plenty of lawn space on which to lie back with a book borrowed from the packed shelves in the dining room. When you fancy exploring your surroundings, the city of Lincoln is thirteen minutes away in the car, while the Lincolnshire Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty can be reached in just over twenty. Closer to home, there's a pub two minutes' walk around the corner.

A dash of magic has been liberally sprinkled over the traditional interior of this charming cottage and we’re big fans. The living room is cosy as you like, with a squashy pair of teal chesterfield sofas, an open fire and gilt-framed pictures. Upstairs, the bedrooms have a sumptuous boutique feel (we loved the luscious leafy look in one of them) and rural views that invite total relaxation. The unique dining nook is adorned with sheepskins, a chandelier made of antlers and characterful wallpaper depicting country scenes, making it a space fit for a (smallish) party of lords and ladies. The setting is rather lovely too, in a pretty Lincolnshire hamlet, with open countryside all around. Outside there’s a beautiful garden with a pergola and dining areas for those dusky summer evenings. Nearby Harlaxton, a five-minute drive away, is ideal for stocking up on basic supplies, as well as providing a slice of history with Harlaxton Manor. Drive a little further to take a stroll down Grantham Canal for gorgeous waterside views or explore the pale limestone streets of Stamford. Depending on the season, evenings are either about a glass of something cold in the garden, or a warming red in front of the fire – whichever way, it’s a delight.

In the heart of Stamford, a lantern lights the doorway of this 300-year-old townhouse. The owners have spent a year carefully renovating this home, maintaining the classic stonework outside, and creating a sophisticated space filled with colour inside. A wood-burning stove tucked into the original stone wall of the living room adds a touch of cottage cosiness, while midnight blue wall panelling and an aquamarine sofa are solidly 21st-century. The clash of eras continues in the custom-made kitchen where dark blue cupboards filled with sleek black crockery sit against lime-green walls, and the wooden beams of the low ceiling wouldn’t be out of place in an 18th-century country kitchen. Out the back door, a decked, courtyard-style garden is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink as stings of lights twinkle above. It’s just a few steps to Stamford High Street, where there are plenty of shops, cafés and delis to choose from.

A hidden gem nestled in the heart of Lincolnshire's beautiful countryside, this cute cottage resides in the village of Tealby. Offering a quintessential English countryside experience, you'll be located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so it's the perfect spot for bolthole walkers, cyclists and those in need of some time with nature. Just moments from the villages local amenities, you'll find The Vintage Tearooms offering delicious breakfasts, lunches and afternoon teas just a two-minute walk away. Stop by the local village shop, for fresh bread only a four-minute stroll away and be sure to enjoy a nightcap at The King's Head Pub – a five-minute walk away. Restored to high quality, the cottage itself is a humble breath of fresh air, that feels completely private despite its close proximity to the host's main house. Cosy interiors create a warm and welcoming space to snuggle up in after a day of taking in the country air. Sip a cup of tea in front of the log burner fire – oh and there's underfloor heating too, so you needn't worry about getting cold toes here. Outside you'll have your own private decking area with picturesque views over the garden. It's a haven of wildlife during the spring and summer months – if you're lucky you might even get to see the pheasant that often frequents this space. Get the barbecue going when it's warm out and spend the evening stargazing up at the twinkling sky (since there are no street lights here – it's an incredible sight). If you're staying for a few days you might want to venture out to discover more of historic Lincoln – check out the city's castle and cathedral, only a forty-minute drive away. Not to mention the miles of unspoilt coastline that is easily in reach if you head further east.

Don the home’s wellington boots to voyage through the surrounding woodlands with roaming wild ponies just moments from your door. Rejuvenate with a pampering session at the estate’s natural spa (think Cleopatra copper milk and flower baths) – a minute’s drive away. Or up the ante with archery and axe throwing lessons before a bonfire evening – it’s all going on here.

Back at home, this place is everything you’d imagined your country retreat to be. The décor is on the right side of quirky – not too minimalist, not too over-filled with antiques – and freshly cut flowers and vibrant textiles add dashes of colour. Built back in the mid-nineteenth century, this Grade-II listed house in Stamford is a real looker from the outside, thanks to its slate roof, coursed stone walls and a white clock face at the very top of the property. The interior is just as handsome, although perhaps a little more modern than might be anticipated. Black leather furnishings and stark white walls are a chic combination in the dual-aspect living area, as is the wood-panelled kitchen and the glass dining room table. Around the back of the house, there's a small patio area with seating so you can make the most of bursts of bright weather. There are plenty of rural attractions around these parts if you visit during the warmer seasons. The sixteenth-century manor, Burghley House, and the adjacent parkland can be reached in twelve minutes by car, while Rutland Water Nature Reserve takes around eighteen.

Step inside, though, and you’ll find that this place is far from old-fashioned, boasting colourful accents and modern amenities that’ll make you feel at home the second you cross the threshold.

Make a beeline for the open-plan living area where you’ll find everything you need for a relaxing evening in with friends and family or grab a seat on the patio and unwind with a glass of wine while the younger members of your party make themselves busy on the wooden playground. Then when it’s time to eat, gather everyone around the dining table for a delicious, home-cooked meal followed by a gentle stroll to Lincoln Cathedral, the perfect place to soak up some local history before turning in for the night. And when tomorrow comes, what better way to start the day than with a long lie-in in your comfy double bed? After all, if you can't treat yourself when you're on holiday, when can you?

Looking for a different sort of escape? This 1750s mill is nestled in the Lincolnshire countryside, boasting green views, a private tennis court, and riverside decking for post-birdwatching barbecues. Your dogs are welcome to join you, but tall guests must take care not to bump their heads on the historic beams and low ceilings. While scenic walks are aplenty, a car is necessary to get around. We recommend the seven-mile drive to Stamford for trips to Burghley Hall and the International Horse Trials.

The surrounding hamlet also offers beautiful shared gardens, 3 acres of mainly lawned grounds to relax in, an enclosed area just for dogs to run off the lead, and use of a tennis court by arrangement.

This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

If this characterful Norfolk cottage were any sweeter, we’d eat it right up. The exterior is pure chocolate box, and the inside is bursting with beamed period charm. The host is an interior designer with a true collector’s eye and has filled the cottage with an eclectic mix of vintage pieces and curios. From taxidermy vignettes to Serge Moullie inspired art, there are unexpected details at every turn. 

Summer’s evenings are spent in the fragrant country garden drinking Pimms and looking out over meadowland, and in the winter months, the wood burner keeps the cosiness levels running high. You’re just a short drive from North Norfolk’s stunning sandy beaches, and the bustling town of Burnham Market. If you don’t feel like a drive, the surrounding countryside is ripe for walking, and the local pub is just five minutes away.

In the middle of the quaint Northamptonshire village of Maidford lies this lovingly renovated Georgian rectory ideal for large family getaways. Each room tells a different story, with unique finds ranging from antique plates to watchful bird art and even a crocodile in the downstairs loo – a model one, don't be alarmed! At every turn, this stunning home manages to surpass expectations.

In the ten acres of grounds surrounding the property, you'll discover a heated swimming pool, a barbecue, a huge alfresco dining area and manicured gardens where you can escape for a moment's peace. Say hello to the bantam chickens wandering about, too – they're sure to be firm friends by the end of your stay. There's even a games room so you can start up a table tennis tournament or practise your putting on the mini-green. 

When you fancy a day out, the stately home and gardens at Canons Abbey are twenty minutes away in the car, while the ears of motorsports fans are certain to prick up when they hear the journey to Silverstone's hallowed circuit takes about half that time.

We're pretty sure that you won't find many cottages cuter than this. Built at the backend of the eighteenth century, this traditional weaver's house is Grade-II listed and you can see why. Inside, the wooden ceiling beams, exposed brickwork and stable door are full of rustic charm, while a log-burning fire and antique furnishings add an extra level of cosiness. To the side of the home, there's a patio area complete with alfresco seating where you can enjoy a coffee and the surrounding tranquillity of West Yorkshire. Fans of Last of the Summer Wine — one of the longest-running sitcoms in the world — will love walking around the local town of Holmfirth where it was filmed. The Peak District is only a ten-minute drive away too if you're in the mood for a long ramble.

This baby blue timber lodge is just as cute on the inside as it is on the outside. As well as having all the essentials for a romantic getaway, there are house plants, colourful pieces of artwork and a turquoise accent wall to give the place a bit of character without overdoing it — one of the hosts is an interior designer, can't you tell? Out through the glass door, there's a large garden with a cosy seating area at the far end and plenty of potted plants dotted about. You'll find that there's a real sense of peace here. The local village of Banningham is small — albeit with a well-recommended gastropub — and there are plenty of outdoor excursions to fill your days with nearby. The birthplace of Anne Boleyn, Blickling Estate, takes ten minutes to reach in the car, while Cromer Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

Blue Eyed Soul

Surrounded by over 500 acres of woodland, lakes and ponds, this Grade II-listed farmhouse makes a big impression. Rooms are spacious and comfortably modern, though taller guests might want to watch their heads on some of the sloping ceilings. The manicured garden stretches around the outdoor seating, making it easy for parents to supervise kids playing on the lawn whilst they enjoy a sunset drink. There's also a tennis court, gym, squash court, play set, and table tennis to keep everyone busy, but the lake is our favourite. With a jetty and small rowing boat, you can get out on the water whenever you need a peaceful moment.
