The building is one of the oldest in Mayfair – in 1821, famed Buckingham Palace architect Thomas Cubbit extended it – and you can see the character, history and period details in every room. It feels like a home you want to linger in, with new surprises waiting at every turn. We love the antique furniture – a clawfoot desk here, a fauteuil armchair there – but the smart kitchen, stylish bathroom and mod-cons like a rainfall shower, espresso machine and Netflix bring things in the 21st-century. We think it's the best of both worlds, and the location is even better.

Ritzy and charming, Mayfair is home to leafy squares, cobbled lanes lined with cafes and some of the oldest shops in London. Fashionistas will enjoy shopping along New Bond Street and Saville Row (a five-minute walk away), art fiends can browse the nearby galleries and auction houses (Phillips Auction House & Gallery is right next door) and foodies will love the bevvy of gourmet eateries nearby. Many of the capital's must-sees – including Hyde Park, Buckingham Palace, and Soho – can be reached on foot, and for exploring further afield, the nearest Tube station is a seven-minute stroll away. All of the bedrooms here are en-suite, and there’s plenty of space to relax in the living area after a busy day seeing the sights. We think this home is a great choice for a family or group of friends wanting a comfortable stay in a central location.

When it comes to London neighbourhoods, some visitors are guilty of overlooking Farringdon, which is a pretty big sin in our books — not only is it excellently located between the bright lights of the city centre and the trendier East, but it's full of exciting restaurants, interesting museums and industrial architecture. It's also home to effortlessly cool apartments, such as this one.

In the open-concept living-kitchen area, light flows through the space thanks to windows on either end. The design is definitely Scandi in influence — clock the clean lines and preference for wood surfaces — but the abstract artwork stops it from feeling too identikit. Rather pleasingly for a home for two, the cobalt kitchen has a wealth of sleek surface space for whipping up romantic dinners, while the pristinely tiled bathroom has a tub that will surely sing to you after a long day on your feet.

Although the surrounding neighbourhood has a welcomingly quiet residential feel, some of the UK capital's most famous sights are only a short walk away — both The British Museum and St Paul's Cathedral will take you all of twenty minutes to reach.

Man About Town

Sleek, modern, and practical, this home is an excellent base to explore London from. The immediate area is filled with things to do – we recommend going for a walk in Inner and Middle Temple Gardens or seeing an exhibition at Somerset House. If you don’t feel like cooking at home, Covent Garden’s lively restaurant scene is only about fifteen minutes away on foot, and you’ll also find lots of places to eat along the Strand. Though the kitchen hides myriad appliances and crockery behind slick, white cupboards if you want to dine in. Settle in from the smart TV on the stylish mid-century velvet sofa for a quiet night in after a long day exploring everything central London has to offer.  

Verdant Chance

This Paddington apartment has space to work from home and excellent transport links across the city. It's a great find for business travellers, though families and friend groups will also feel right at home. Keep in mind that the living space is on the smaller side, and it's on the third floor of a building without a lift. Even so, given the location – a five-minute walk from Paddington Station and twenty minutes from Hyde Park – we think that's a fair compromise.
