First built in the 1800s, who could've imagined this former farm foundry house would turn it the ideal family pad it is today? Converted to comfortably accommodate large groups, original features like the vaulted ceilings and brickwork remain to add character and charm. Spilling out onto a sweeping lawn, from where you can see the lush farmland and rolling countryside from the outdoor seating area, this house is about tranquillity but also connects you to the Norfolk Coast, about a forty-five-minute drive away. Cosy, especially with the wood-burning stove lit in the living room and set across a single level, this farmhouse is a great escape.

An interesting fact about this former stable block is that in the same year it was completed — 1881 — the architect behind the design, Alfred Waterhouse, also finished work on the National History Museum. Admittedly, this building in the Norfolk village of Crimplesham is slightly less spectacular than the London museum, but there are still double-height ceilings and a large staircase upon entrance for a touch of grandeur. There have been a lot of changes in the interior since the late nineteenth century, but the wholesale modernisation feels in keeping with the country location, especially in the large wood-panelled kitchen, the comfy living room complete with a roaring fireplace and the games room that's accessible through a secret bookcase. There's an enclosed garden with alfresco seating and a barbecue, but there's plenty more to see and do outside in the local area. The historical town of Ely takes just under half an hour to reach in the car, while the coast at Hunstanton can be reached in forty minutes' drive. Closer to home, the quaint town of Downham Market is an hour away on foot.

Inside, vaulted ceilings sport original wooden beams, while enormous glass walls flood the space with sunlight. Books and board games line the shelves, cushy sofas are perfect for snuggling and a delightful wood burner keeps everything toasty warm on chilly evenings. We love the small but well-equipped kitchen – you'll have everything you need to rustle up dinner – and the sumptuous bathtub is just the ticket after an invigorating walk through the countryside. On summer days, take your relaxing onto the private courtyard garden, gathering around the fire pit and firing up the barbecue for an alfresco feast when you grow peckish.

Spend sunny afternoons strolling around the farm, admiring the prehistoric ponds – they're some of the last remaining ones in the country. This home is nestled in the heart of the Brecks, where wild forests, craggy heaths and twisted pines are rife for rambling. If you're looking for a luxurious, romantic retreat in Norfolk – this newly refurbished cottage could be the place for you. Unwind with a glass of Champagne in the hot tub at the end of the beautiful garden, filled with roses and other cottage garden plants. Later, settle down in the reading corner, next to the log burner, with a good book and a glass of wine from the wine chiller. We adore the vistas over the green and village pond from this cottage – it's the picture-perfect view. As night falls, have a long soak in the free-standing bath with the organic toiletries provided – utter bliss. Your lovely hosts have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable, from bathrobes and slippers to treats for your four-legged friends (if you're bringing the pooch). The next day enjoy breakfast in the light, contemporary glass dining room overlooking the garden. Then, pop over the road for lunch if you don't fancy cooking – one of the top five gastropubs in the area is right opposite. Afterwards, perhaps walk off all that lovely food with a stroll around the village with its pretty duck ponds. For a day at the beach – Old Hunstanton Beach is a thirty-minute drive away – so you can have the best of both coast and country. It doesn't get much more idyllic than this.

Built in 1755, this Grade II listed cottage exudes character, while wood beams, soft furnishings and the red brick hearth are bound to have you feeling all warm and cosy from the get-go. Keen chefs will enjoy cooking up hearty meals in the country-style kitchen with tiled floors, an AGA cooker and a charming wooden dining table and chairs. While others may prefer to run themselves an indulgent bubble bath in the roll-top tub or sneak off for a cat nap in the sloped-ceiling bedroom. 

With a prime village position and a tranquil setting, the home offers endless views of the delightful St James the Great Church, dating back to the fourteenth century. Start sunny mornings with breakfast in the enclosed courtyard garden, complete with seating and a barbecue, followed by a wander through the picturesque village. Cycle along the easily accessible Nar Valley Way and admire the beautiful countryside landscape. The Sandringham Estate, Fakenham Racecourse and Houghton Hall are just a short drive away. Further afield, a day of birdwatching at Titchwell's RSPB reserve is just under forty minutes by car. Finish your day back at home, curled up with a book by the crackling wood-burning stove.

Surrounded by over 500 acres of woodland, lakes and ponds, this Grade II-listed farmhouse makes a big impression. Rooms are spacious and comfortably modern, though taller guests might want to watch their heads on some of the sloping ceilings. The manicured garden stretches around the outdoor seating, making it easy for parents to supervise kids playing on the lawn whilst they enjoy a sunset drink. There's also a tennis court, gym, squash court, play set, and table tennis to keep everyone busy, but the lake is our favourite. With a jetty and small rowing boat, you can get out on the water whenever you need a peaceful moment.

Quaint and cosy, this old shoemaker's cottage in the heart of Cromer is a perfect seaside retreat for two. It's just a two-minute walk from Cromer Beach and the Victorian pier, making it a top-notch spot for couples to unwind. 

Inside, the home hasn't lost any of its traditional charm, thanks to the wooden floors, timber beams and vintage furniture. Lighthouses and wooden shoes line the shelves, paying homage to the cottage’s excellent seaside location as well as its history. The living room is warm and comfortable — on chilly nights, snuggle in front of the electric fire with a good book and a glass of wine. While the kitchen is on the smaller side, it still has everything you need to whip up a quick breakfast or light lunch. 

When it's time for dinner, we recommend grabbing a bite to eat at one of the fabulous restaurants, delis, and cafés in town, then finishing off the evening with a nightcap at the pub across the road.

We can see why this cottage was in The Sunday Times' Coolest 100 Cottages' list – it's a Jacobean dream, full of original character and quirky features. Once home to the miller of Plomesgate Mill, it now houses wonderful antiques, such as a fantastic 1700s Breton bed built straight into the wall, a gorgeous oak four-poster and a working 1800s kitchen range. 

Enjoy a tasty full English breakfast (courtesy of the welcome hamper provided by your lovely hosts Beverley and Martin) in the farmhouse style kitchen. Or when the Suffolk sun is shining, dine in the pretty, wisteria clad courtyard. If you’re lucky enough to be here in August and September, there's a mulberry bush in the grounds that guests are welcome to pick fruit from – perfect for making some jam or muffins.

Something else we adore here is the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind this home. Take the dogs for a walk through the meandering footpaths that wind through meadows and ancient woodland. In spring, you’ll see captivating carpets of cheerful daffodils, bluebells and primroses. Whatever time of year you come, though, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from nuthatches to woodpeckers.
 
There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, an arts complex on the banks of the River Alde, just over two miles away. Or head to Aldeburgh (seven minutes in the car) – you can borrow some bikes and cycle there in around thirty minutes too.

Step back in time at this meticulously restored Regency cottage. Your hosts have poured their time and energy into sourcing period-specific reclaimed materials and equipping the home with antique furnishings to create a cosy and charming English escape that offers the very best of coast and country.

All that effort has clearly paid off, as evidenced by the beautiful interior. From the Victorian roll-top bath to the eighteenth-century range and the wainscotting on the walls – every effort has been made to make it feel as authentic as possible. Even the mod cons, such as the TV, are hidden away inside bread ovens that are built into the chimney so as not to shatter the illusion.

At the top of the narrow staircase is the twin bedroom, through which you enter the main bedroom – a pretty common arrangement for houses of this period.

Step outside, and you'll find a beautifully maintained nature reserve right on your doorstep. Your hosts bought it in 2015 and have spent the intervening years slowly restoring and exposing its beauty, with winding footpaths leading to conveniently placed benches, soaring Scots pine trees and ancient oaks – perfect for a reflective moment in nature or a ride on the supplied bikes.

For adventures further afield, you'll find maps detailing footpaths that run to the world-class concert hall at Snape Maltings, two-and-a-half miles away, and continue through forests and past lakes, leading all the way to the sea at Aldeburgh. 

The Miller's Cottage

This pretty 16th Century cottage is full of character and light. Relax on the large enclosed courtyard with its beautiful blossom tree and flower baskets – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of rosé wine. At night the tree is lit up with twinkling lights giving the space a magical feel.

If it gets a bit chilly, head inside and sit next to the large inglenook fireplace with its cosy wood-burning stove. We love this room with its historic beams and antiques. If you don’t fancy eating out, rustle up a dinner using some local fresh seafood from the fisherman’s huts at Aldeburgh, a twenty-minute drive away.

Closer to home, the centre of Wickham Market is 50 yards away, where you’ll find a range of shops including a butchers, antique store and beauty salon, as well as an arts centre. There are a couple of restaurants here as well as a fish n’ chips shop, while there are many pubs nearby, including one in the village of Ufford, a one to two-hour walk from the cottage (or a four-minute drive). Your lovely hosts provide bikes for free, too, if you want to explore the area on two wheels.


Chaffinch Cottage

This old dairy, set on the Burghley Estate, is a peaceful getaway for large groups and makes a pretty picture for small celebrations. Throughout the restoration of the dairy and its conversion into cottages, an emphasis remained on the history of this building, and plenty of the original features remain to make this a charming and comfortable stay. With two wings, it also grants everyone plenty of space, though the mezzanine bedrooms can only be accessed through several ground-floor rooms, which might not feel the most private. Still, it's a beautiful space, and the estate is within the Capability Brown Parkland, first landscaped in the early 1700s and still as lush and inviting, perfect for walks with the dogs.

The town of Bury St Edmunds is perhaps most famous for its cathedral and former abbey, and this apartment puts you as close as can be to these landmarks. In fact, the historic Norman Tower and Cathedral Gate can be seen out the window. Inside, the newly refurbished interior living quarters feel suitably smart, from the wooden floorboards and mid-century inspired furnishings to the stark white walls and the sleek surfaces in the kitchen. The bedroom has been painted in a soothing shade of pastel pink and there's even a bathtub for enjoying long soaks after a day of taking in all that this quaint town has to offer. As well as the ecclesiastical attractions just across the street, Moyse's Hall Museum can be reached in six minutes' walk, while the Italiante Ickworth House is only eighteen minutes away in the car.

With farmland to the front and the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind – this gorgeous home, part of a cluster of mill buildings, is in an idyllic spot. 

Take a stroll through winding footpaths of the reserve that meander through meadows and forests of giant cedars and ancient oaks. In spring, you’ll see enchanting carpets of bluebells, primroses and daffodils, but whatever time of year you come, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from chaffinches to woodpeckers. You can borrow some bikes too if you prefer to cycle.

You don’t have to go anywhere to get some fresh air, though. There’s a lovely old cobbled, sunny courtyard where clematis and wisteria clamber up the walls – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy the welcome hamper of breakfast goodies. There’s another patio area, too, with fragrant rambling roses – ideal for a glass of wine.

The home itself is a sympathetic conversion of a stable and grain store. We adore the character features inside, such as the traditional 17th Century Suffolk white brick flooring, wood-panelled walls and old oak floorboards. Part of the original manger has been incorporated into the wall dividing the kitchen and the living space area – a lovely touch. Open the stable doors here and listen to the blackbirds singing at dusk. Furnished with antiques, this cottage will appeal to couples and pet owners looking for a luxurious country bolthole.

A hidden gem on a pretty countryside lane in the village of Neatishead, this cosy lodge is perfect for peaceful couple retreats or solo getaways. With incredible views across the spacious garden throughout this home, what could be a better way to start your day than to wake up to green vistas before taking your morning cuppa alfresco to the outdoor table on the patio?

The best way to experience the Norfolk Broads is by boat, and the ‘Capital of the Norfolk Broads’ Wroxham – where you can hire a boat or take a tour up the river – is a short eleven-minute drive from your door here. So, roam up the river and admire the views before you stop for lunch at one of the restaurants, pubs or cafes, many of which even offer riverside seating. 

The village of Neatishead itself is also a quiet and unspoilt area of Norfolk, with its own pub, village shop and swim barn – a pool which you can book online. Plus, there are plenty of country lanes that make great places for walking or cycling. 

In the evening, when the weather allows it, we would love nothing more than to dine alfresco in the garden at this home. Then, snuggle up inside with a good book or play a board game together.

Escape the ordinary at this riverside hideaway for two, nestled in over an acre of secluded woodlands and yet just a twenty-minute stroll from the historic centre of Cambridge. 

With a wood-burning stove to nestle up beside and riverside views from the luxurious four-poster bed, the charms of this cottage cabin are hard to resist. 

On sunny mornings, open the French doors wide and savour morning coffees from the deck’s swing chairs as swans and rowers glide on by. Then up the ante and take to the river with one of the home's boats or kayaks – you've direct access to the river from the garden. 

When thoughts turn to food, closeby you'll find a coffee shop for lazy brunches (ten minutes on foot) and a riverside gastropub (three minutes on foot). Or head into Cambridge's centre along the river towpath (twenty-minute stroll or ten on bike) to dive into one of its ancient pubs before a mooch about the shops. 

Just be sure to make it home for nightfall to get toasty beside the chiminea (which handily doubles as your barbecue). As the stars twinkle overhead, there's no finer place to be.
