Your home would have formerly been a hub of prayers and song, but now stands as a luxurious holiday pad.

While the exterior is true to its original purpose, you’ll be stunned by the elegant decor inside. A colourful Persian rug lines the wooden floors in the lofty lounge, where chunky timber beams support a high, apex ceiling. But the most striking feature has to be the windows. Tall, panelled, and with coloured stained glass at the peak, the light just hits differently in this home. And when you wake up in the morning, there’s nothing quite like the blue pattern of the stained glass coming through at sunrise.

The living room has that country essential, a log burner, too. We love the bedrooms here – one has French doors that open onto the courtyard front garden, while the other has a Juliet balcony. What about the address? Well, the location is great – this home is situated in Burnham Market, a picturesque, leafy village with plenty of boutiques, while about six miles away lies Wells-next-the-Sea.

The very embodiment of all things English and classic, there’s an open-plan living and dining area with a magnificent inglenook fireplace at its heart and storybook armchairs feathered by sheepskins and plump cushions just waiting for you to sink right in. While upstairs, you’ll find two bright and sunny bedrooms with charming views of village life through the chocolate-box windows.

When tummies start to rumble, there’s a charming 19th-century pub just a short walk from the cottage for upper-crust grub and fine ales. Or blaze a trail to search out lip-smacking fish and chips and lashings of ice creams along the seafront in nearby Old Hunstanton – it would be rude not to.

If the sun is shining, make the most of the charming garden – kids and furry friends will love the runaround whilst adults can sit back with a local cheeseboard. There are two sitting rooms here, which is ideal when everyone has their own routine. Set the little ones up in front of a film in the snug, and sink into the sitting room sofas for a glass of Picpoul de Pinet. 

And after a day of cliff-top walks along the North Coat Path and memorable birdwatches at RSPB Titchwell and Cley, this is precisely the kind of warm and welcoming home you long for.

Regular visitors to Norfolk will instantly recognise the dusty ginger colour of this cottage's facade. That's because it's constructed from Carrstone, an iron-oxide-rich variation of sandstone used to construct many of the local region's most famous buildings. Along with the surrounding crop fields, this exterior makes for a picturesque backdrop while sitting out in the garden.

French doors open from the living room into the courtyard garden for coffees on sunny mornings and outdoor suppers in the summer. Snettisham has its own shingle beach and you’re just ten minutes’ drive from the sands of beautiful Brancaster. The hosts allow pets, so bring your pooch for long windy walks on the coast or under big Norfolk skies in the local nature reserve.

Burnham Market is a true champion against looking like any old town. Such a great village deserves an appropriately unique stay, which is where this home comes in. The stone exterior gives the whole place a country feel, but the contemporary, velvety interior guarantees a comfortable stay. It's well-suited to families, and your host has made sure to make it feel as welcoming as possible. Each room is filled with light, especially the open-plan, dual-aspect kitchen and living area. That said, our favourite spot to unwind is the private garden. With a pizza oven, heated pavilion, and views of Westgate Orchard, it's the definition of an idyllic escape.

This 18th-century carrstone cottage has been lovingly renovated. It’s bright and cheerful, with bold splashes of colour adding warmth and playful touch. Mornings might begin with a hearty home-cooked breakfast in the large countryside kitchen. Rainy afternoons can be happily whiled away in the cosy living room – throw a log on the fire and challenge your loved ones to a few board games. Of course, this is a seaside escape, so you’ll be hoping for sunny weather and the chance to make the most of the garden – fire up the barbecue and enjoy a grilled feast at the patio table whilst the kids and your furry friends enjoy the runaround. 

You’re idyllically located for walks along the coastal paths, where you can soak up the sea breeze and spot local wildlife – this is an RSBP Reserve, after all. The town is just a few steps away, so you can enjoy a pub dinner and a local ale before strolling home to your soft sheets.

Unwind with a glass of Champagne in the hot tub at the end of the beautiful garden, filled with roses and other cottage garden plants. Later, settle down in the reading corner, next to the log burner, with a good book and a glass of wine from the wine chiller. We adore the vistas over the green and village pond from this cottage – it's the picture-perfect view. As night falls, have a long soak in the free-standing bath with the organic toiletries provided – utter bliss. Your lovely hosts have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable, from bathrobes and slippers to treats for your four-legged friends (if you're bringing the pooch). The next day enjoy breakfast in the light, contemporary glass dining room overlooking the garden. Then, pop over the road for lunch if you don't fancy cooking – one of the top five gastropubs in the area is right opposite. Afterwards, perhaps walk off all that lovely food with a stroll around the village with its pretty duck ponds. For a day at the beach – Old Hunstanton Beach is a thirty-minute drive away – so you can have the best of both coast and country. It doesn't get much more idyllic than this.

It can be found in the thriving coastal village of Heacham, which boasts a wide bay of almost 20 miles of flat sands and calm water in a lovely bay. You’ll have two beaches to choose from, with Heacham South Beach only a five-minute drive. It’s the perfect place to try out kite surfing and windsurfing – it’s also a great spot for flying kites if that sounds a bit too energetic.

The home is bright and cheerful, with a conservatory dining room that’s flooded with light from the glass patio doors. When you’re not curled up in the elegant yet comfortable living room or dining at the breakfast bar, you’ll probably be outside. The garden boasts a patio area ideal for outdoor dining – on sunny afternoons you’ll be itching to fire up the barbecue. The garden is a delicious suntrap – not overlooked by neighbours – so you can soak up the sun in peace. 

This home’s hidden gem is the log cabin in the garden. It’s a carpeted little haven with armchairs and a TV, and even has a desk and wi-fi – if you need to work during your break, you might as well do it in style.

It's set in Dersingham, a traditional village, with great pubs, tea rooms and its own National Nature Reserve. Plus, you're an eighteen-minute walk from the royal residence and its immaculate gardens. Take leafy strolls through the beautiful countryside and woodland footpaths with your four-legged friends (they're allowed) or spend sunny afternoons relaxing on Snettisham Beach, just a ten-minute drive away. Return home to a cosy living room under the warmth of a rustic wood-burning stove – there's ample seating, including a comfy armchair that has evening reading written all over it. The low ceilings, pleasing patterns and calming colour palette make for a delightful space to unwind. Although on warmer days, spend time relaxing on the pretty patio and in your private garden with a glass of wine. 

Brook Cottage

On arrival at the idyllic Holkham Estate on the North Norfolk coast, you’ll feel like you’ve walked right onto the set of Downton Abbey. You’ll find this charming gatehouse from the mid-1800s on the southern fringes of the estate. Its style is simple and elegant, which lets the gorgeous countryside on the other side of the decorative lead windows do all the talking. Touches such as the log burner in the living room and a winged velvet sofa keep things cosy and faithful to the home’s character. There’s plenty of hiking and cycling to enjoy on the estate, not to mention checking out the grand main house, one of the UK's most spectacular country piles. But our top tip is the windswept Holkham Beach – an unspoilt stretch of coast where Gwyneth Paltrow walked through the sand in the last scene of Shakespeare in Love.

Behind The Gate

This gorgeous barn conversion, made of local flint and brick, is nestled in a tranquil spot in the glorious Norfolk countryside. We love the character here, especially the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams in the living space. This country retreat is perfect for entertaining your family and friends. On warm days, relax in the sheltered courtyard or the undercover seating area with its twinkly lights – ideal for a glass of Champagne as the light fades. A wildlife lovers paradise, you'll see your host's Guineafowl roaming around, while you may be lucky enough to spot barn owls or otters in the surrounding area. Pensthorpe Natural Park, as featured in BBC's Springwatch, is a fifteen-minute drive away, while Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve, home to the Hawk and Owl Trust is under a ten-minute drive. It's the same distance to the market town of Fakenham, with its weekly market, cinema, bowling centre and shops.  On the other hand, if you fancy a day at the beach, this home is only thirty minutes in the car from the North Norfolk coast, much of which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Barn Owls

This Grade II Listed cottage has a fantastic location right in the centre of Wells-next-the-Sea. Do some beachcombing on Wells-next-the-Sea Beach (around twenty minutes on foot). Then, afterwards, have a stroll along the Quay, a one-minute walk away, and enjoy some fish and chips or pick up some catch of the day from the pretty harbour. There are plenty of local pubs and restaurants, as well as a delicatessen, butchers and fishmonger within a five-minute stroll. Take some local produce back to this lovely home, prepare a meal in the modern kitchen, and then savour it at the table in the sunny courtyard. Or when the weather turns chilly, light the log burning stove (your lovely host provides a starter pack of logs in the colder months) and relax with a glass of wine on the sofa. This stylish cottage is everything you would want from a seaside retreat – we love the original features, such as the old beams, which blend beautifully with the chic furnishings. With so much out and about, too, you’ll probably need to book again to fit it all in.

Built in 1745, this historic English manor is set in the glorious Norfolk countryside. With countryside walks, coastal paths and cycle routes nearby, soaking up the great outdoors comes easily here – and you can bring your four-legged friends along for the adventure, too. The cottage itself is full of the charm you’d expect from such an old home, and the annexe is an added bonus, giving flexibility to the sleeping arrangements and affording two guests a little bit of extra privacy. 

The Little Belle

Surrounded by rolling green meadows and within easy reach of Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham, this place is ideal for families looking to escape to the coast. With all the comforts of home, as well as a cosy wood-burning stove and an outdoor dining area equipped with barbecue, you’ll feel right at ease here. Plus, the private garden is a wonderful sun trap, with views across unspoilt countryside and a bench where you can enjoy your first coffee of the day. 

It’s a leisurely fifteen-minute walk into town, where you’ll find an assortment of places to eat and shop, and a twenty-five-minute stroll across the fields to Wells-next-the-Sea Beach. For days out, the stunning Holkham Hall estate is less than a ten-minute drive away, and the popular seaside towns of Sheringham and Cromer are reached in less than forty-five minutes.

All's Well That Ends Wells

This classic 19th-century brick and flint beauty lives anew as a palatial home with plenty of wow factor. Located close to the village’s 14th-century church and cosy country pub, this home is the perfect place for celebrations with family and friends. Inside, the rooms range from regal to rustic, with a carefully created mix of traditional, antiquated, and modern touches. The stunning dining room is ideal for sumptuous dinner parties fit for royalty, who can be found on the Sandringham estate nearby. The library is our favourite spot for taking a moment to unwind and relax, flicking through the ample books provided.

Meanwhile, an upstairs galleried landing with a vaulted ceiling and cosy open fire provides more of an unassuming, homely charm, while downstairs the garden room basks in natural daylight. Outdoors, the garden provides plenty of space for children and the family dog to roam freely. There's also plenty to do locally too. Spend a day on the beach at one of Norfolk’s stunning sandy beaches (several are dog-friendly), walk the Peddars Way and pop over to neighbouring Great Massingham, a picturesque village with two charming duck ponds and the Dabbling Duck Inn.
