Dating back to 1715, this Grade 2 listed ale house in the North Norfolk town of Holt is a delightful escape. Recently refurbished, the owners have taken great care to restore the original wooden beams, brickwork and fireplaces. We love the bedrooms, all named after teas. After a busy day, there’s nothing better than relaxing in front of the wood burner with some fish and chips from across the road. And of course, pour yourself a pint. You're in a former pub after all.

Surrounded by bustling bars, cafés and shops, you'll have plenty to do in the area. Spend the day strolling through the village – we recommend browsing the local art galleries or having a spot of afternoon tea at one of the many tearooms (there's a charming one right next door). If you're longing for sea and sand, drive fifteen minutes and you'll reach Sheringham Beach and the Norfolk Coast.

Designed in the Italian garden style, the patio here is sure to transport you from the expansive Norfolk landscape straight to the Italian Renaissance. Dine al fresco, bask in the sunshine and enjoy the sweet smell of the roses in spring and summer. Although just twenty miles from the bustling, medieval city of Norwich, this home in the village of Little Barningham feels a world away. With ‘little’ being the operative word, this tiny hamlet is landmarked by a village hall, local church, and gorgeous traditional cottages like yours. Coming home to this adobe after a day in the city is a real taste of country life

We love the colourful flowers around the entrance, creating a magical scene lifted right from a fairytale. You’ll find this adults-only, flint cottage tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac just a five-minute stroll from Holt’s thriving high street. Perfect for two couples wanting to holiday together, there are two bathrooms to speed mornings along. The interiors may feel a little dated for some, but it’s all well-cared for, and the garden opening onto a private, enclosed wood with visiting deer is a nice touch. Location-wise, there’s plenty to walk to in Holt, but you’ll need a car for beach days. Get off to a flying start in Blakeney, just five miles away.

Although it’s worth noting the home’s low beams and restricted head height might not suit the vertically blessed. With no amenities within walking distance, you’ll need a car here. Head to Holt for a dose of sea air (a twenty-minute drive). Or, closer to home, nearby Aylsham for a taste of market town life.

This quirky converted church makes for an ideal creative countryside retreat. The open-plan downstairs, where the pews used to be, has been given over to create a vast double-height space with one double bedroom leading off it and a single and master bedroom found upstairs. The building was originally constructed as a Methodist chapel, and it retains some of that spiritual atmosphere, with a piano, drum kit and guitar – plus a fully equipped kitchen – at hand for whenever musical or culinary inspiration strikes.  Located in the village of Briston and just fifteen minutes from the coast, it's a great base to explore the natural beauty of the area and charming towns like Holt and Cromer. The butcher, baker and greengrocer (no candlestick maker, unfortunately), plus a Co-op, are only around a hundred metres away. At the same time, the local pub serves good food and is only a short walk away. If you'd like to see how the other half live, there are many stately homes and gardens to visit nearby, including Sandringham, the Blickling Estate and Holkham Hall, all within a thirty-five-minute drive.


Oh, Happy Day

A renovated barn in rural north Norfolk, this functional home places you within easy reach of both market towns and the seaside. The long living area fits everyone in for dinner and games, and the large kitchen means you don't need to eat out every night – instead, enjoy the seclusion offered by the home's location and try some rustic cooking. The interior isn't very modern, and the bedrooms look a little dated here. That said, we love the skylights – what a perfect way to wake up in the mornings. 

Now & Then

Built back in 1835, this cottage in the Norfolk town of Holt is approaching its 200th birthday, although you wouldn't be able to tell from the contemporary interior. The soothing palette of muted greys and chic furnishings are completely in keeping with the 21st century rather than the 19th, save for an eclectic collection of curios and mementoes on the shelves.

Arguably the home's best feature is a modern addition – the conservatory is blessed with natural light and is a lovely place to enjoy dinner regardless of the season. It also gives you a view of the back garden, which has another table plus a charcoal barbecue ready and waiting for summer evening feasts.

One thing that hasn't changed in the years since the house has been standing is  the quality of the location. The Georgian architecture of Holt is lovely to wander about and there are shops, cafes and art galleries with which to fill up your afternoon. Further afield, the rugged Norfolk coastline isn't too far away – Salthouse Beach takes ten minutes to reach in the car.

Stay local and ramble along the walking paths and country lanes on your doorstep – ideal for exploring with your four-legged friends in tow – or, take it easy and relax with a pamper session at the award-winning spa in the village, followed by a pint and delicious dinner at the gastropub.

This yellow cottage dates back to the 1850s, so if you're looking for traditional charm with contemporary twists, this is the place for you. Our favourite spot is the light-filled conservatory, which is the perfect spot to indulge in afternoon tea or a glass of wine under the curved roof.

In the living room, cosy is an understatement – plush sofas beckon you to curl up with a good book beneath the wooden beams, while the wood burner and collection of board games are the very things for chillier nights at home. Come dinnertime, make your way to the kitchen and cook up a storm on the Aga stove, preparing a range of mouth-watering fare to share in the dining room. Better yet, dine alfresco in the sun-kissed garden as the day slowly fades and feel the salt-tinged air on your skin.

 Brinton is a small hamlet tucked away from the more lively spots on the Norfolk Coast. But that doesn't mean it's boring – you'll find excellent walking footpaths and cycling routes along the lanes, as well as an award-winning pub in Hunworth a short drive away. Holt is close by, too – ideal if you're after cafes, art galleries, boutique shops and fantastic restaurants. If it's the sea you crave, head to Wells-next-the-Sea or Holkham – both about a half-hour away by car.

Just over the footbridge lies West Runton Common, where shops, pubs, a National Trust property and the sea are all within walking distance. It's a mere sixteen-minute stroll to the sandy beach and a nine-minute drive to Cromer – as far as locations go, you couldn't ask for better.

Inside, personal touches are everywhere, from the welcome hamper full of local goodies to the Alexa speakers with Spotify in every room. The heart of the home is the fully-stocked modern kitchen – we think it's a dream to cook in, especially with a glass of wine in hand, and the eight-seater dining table calls for family dinners and free-flowing conversation. While barbecues and cocktail hours in the garden are a must-do during the warmer months, we think there's no cosier spot to relax than the garden room. In the summer, the rain-sensitive electric roof slides open to reveal blue skies and refreshing sea air, while the open firebox and leather sofa are perfect for snuggling up in the winter.

Quaint and cosy, this old shoemaker's cottage in the heart of Cromer is a perfect seaside retreat for two. It's just a two-minute walk from Cromer Beach and the Victorian pier, making it a top-notch spot for couples to unwind. 

Inside, the home hasn't lost any of its traditional charm, thanks to the wooden floors, timber beams and vintage furniture. Lighthouses and wooden shoes line the shelves, paying homage to the cottage’s excellent seaside location as well as its history. When it's time for dinner, we recommend grabbing a bite to eat at one of the fabulous restaurants, delis, and cafés in town, then finishing off the evening with a nightcap at the pub across the road.
