Dating back to 1715, this Grade 2 listed ale house in the North Norfolk town of Holt is a delightful escape. Recently refurbished, the owners have taken great care to restore the original wooden beams, brickwork and fireplaces. We love the bedrooms, all named after teas. After a busy day, there’s nothing better than relaxing in front of the wood burner with some fish and chips from across the road. And of course, pour yourself a pint. You're in a former pub after all.

Surrounded by bustling bars, cafés and shops, you'll have plenty to do in the area. Spend the day strolling through the village – we recommend browsing the local art galleries or having a spot of afternoon tea at one of the many tearooms (there's a charming one right next door). If you're longing for sea and sand, drive fifteen minutes and you'll reach Sheringham Beach and the Norfolk Coast.

Another option would be to head round to your private garden, where a verdant lawn and patio furniture awaits – perfect for afternoon tea and scones. 

When the evening rolls in, there’s no better place to be than in the lounge. It offers the English country comforts you’d expect, but without feeling old-fashioned or frumpy in any way. The glow from the log-burner slights up stylish grey sofas and a Berber-style patterned rug in muted tones, while a chunky timber beam lines the ceiling above. As cosy and quaint as you'd expect a cottage to be, this Victorian one in the heart of Blakeney is brimming with charm. Everything from the farmhouse-style kitchen to the wood-burning stove adds a rustic homeliness that might not be to everyone's taste but adds to the comfort here. Norfolk Coast explorers will find Salhouse Beach an eleven-minute drive away, a nice segue to discovering dotted gems further up and down the coastline. And it wouldn't be right for a traditional brick and flint house to not be within walking distance of a quintessentially British pub, which you can find alongside other shops. Though there's no parking available, a car is advisable to make the most of your stay.

The Great Country Cottage

Character and cosiness abound in this single-storey home, situated in the heart of North Norfolk's AONB. At first glance, your eyes will be drawn to the wooden beams and vaulted ceilings. But it's not all old-world charm – you'll find plenty of 21st-century comforts dotted across the cushy bedrooms and ample-sized living areas, all ideally sized for groups. 

Home chefs will love preparing Sunday lunch on the Aga stove, and the summer room is a sweet spot to savour your morning coffees and afternoon teas. Meanwhile, bookworms can curl up in front of the wood-burner with a well-thumbed read from the host's personal collection.

Location-wise, you're just a stone's throw from Salthouse's pebble beach, but if you prefer sandy shores, Cromer, Wells-Next-the-Sea and Holkham are all within easy reach. Head to Holt, only three miles away, for Georgian gems – independent shops, inviting cafes and delicious restaurants – or drive ten minutes to Blakeney for a bit of seal spotting. Later on, swing by the village pub down the lane for brilliant food and local ales – the perfect close to a busy day on the coast.

This yellow cottage dates back to the 1850s, so if you're looking for traditional charm with contemporary twists, this is the place for you. Our favourite spot is the light-filled conservatory, which is the perfect spot to indulge in afternoon tea or a glass of wine under the curved roof.

In the living room, cosy is an understatement – plush sofas beckon you to curl up with a good book beneath the wooden beams, while the wood burner and collection of board games are the very things for chillier nights at home. Come dinnertime, make your way to the kitchen and cook up a storm on the Aga stove, preparing a range of mouth-watering fare to share in the dining room. Better yet, dine alfresco in the sun-kissed garden as the day slowly fades and feel the salt-tinged air on your skin.

 Brinton is a small hamlet tucked away from the more lively spots on the Norfolk Coast. But that doesn't mean it's boring – you'll find excellent walking footpaths and cycling routes along the lanes, as well as an award-winning pub in Hunworth a short drive away. Holt is close by, too – ideal if you're after cafes, art galleries, boutique shops and fantastic restaurants. If it's the sea you crave, head to Wells-next-the-Sea or Holkham – both about a half-hour away by car.

Sundrift

Nestled in the Norfolk countryside, just a twenty-two-minute drive from Cromer and the coast, this converted barn is the perfect blend of old and new. Inside, you'll find charming period features like wooden beams and exposed stone walls, but the real wow factor is the open-plan living space. It's the heart of the house, where family and friends can chat, relax and share a meal together. We particularly love the bi-fold doors that open onto the garden – when the weather is nice, they flood the room with light. The south-facing terrace catches the sun all day, so pull up a chair and enjoy a morning cuppa or an evening drink in the fresh air. When the sun goes down, we can't think of anything more delightful than popping a log on the wood-burner, grabbing a glass of wine and playing a game or two before bedtime. 

With the Georgian town of Holt an eight-minute drive away and the Salthouse Marshes reachable in fifteen, this cosy cottage promises plenty of Norfolk adventures. Stay local and ramble along the walking paths and country lanes on your doorstep – ideal for exploring with your four-legged friends in tow – or, take it easy and relax with a pamper session at the award-winning spa in the village, followed by a pint and delicious dinner at the gastropub.

Finchsong Cottage

Escape to the countryside with this beautiful barn conversion in north Norfolk. A home for all seasons, the toasty warmth of the wood burner is welcome in winter, while in summer, the barbecue draws you outside for a spot of alfresco dining. The quaint village pub is just a five-minute drive away or a twenty-minute walk for those feeling energetic, and what you’ll find isn’t your run-of-the-mill pub – it offers spa treatments, too. For trips further afield, we recommend driving to nearby Holt where you can visit the North Norfolk Railway or dip your toes into the sea at Salthouse beach.

The Olde Mint

You'll find this flint cottage right in the heart of Field Dalling – a rural town set back from the North Norfolk Heritage Coast. Located within an AONB, you’re perfectly placed for hiking the trails and spotting the wildlife in Blakeney National Nature Reserve, sighting the basking seals on a seal tour through Blakeney Point, or strolling the shores along the heritage coast. 

The options for seaside excursions are endless, but when you're ready to put your walking feet up, come home and relax in this charming and modern cottage. The luscious garden is an excellent spot to soak up the last of the day's sun or stretch out on the plump sofas with a glass of natural wine and the crackling fire. Fix up a comforting dinner in the kitschy kitchen or, if you're not in the mood to cook, grab some fish and chips from your local. We can’t think of a better way to end the day than with a soak in the freestanding copper tub before sinking into your sheets and the log fire flames dancing away in the background.

Contemporary luxuries and sublime views across the marshes to the sea from inside, coupled with lovely grounds outside, make this a dream place to share with your family or a group of friends. Each bedroom has a unique aesthetic, so run in and claim yours first – we'd bag the master bedroom with its sea vistas. Come morning, make yourself a drink, leisurely take in the stylish interiors, and open the kitchen's French doors onto the gorgeous patio. There's plenty to keep you occupied here, such as an electric piano or play some table tennis and pool in the games room. 

The outdoor spaces are a feature of the home. The top area is fully enclosed with mature planting and features a stone terrace on two levels. Then there’s a gate to the lower garden with gentle sloping lawned area, and best of all there’s a small path between the two gardens that leads down to the Norfolk Coastal Path for the use of local residents.

Once you can bear to tear yourself away from this home, explore your town base of Blakeney and its harbour, marshes, and sweeping pretty landscapes. Keen walkers will love the North Norfolk Coastal path to Morston, a combination of sea breeze and stunning views. The Norfolk coast has so much countryside to see – drive for twenty-five minutes and discover historic Holkham, which has award-winning beaches, a deer park, and a fruit farm where you can pick your own berries.

This quirky converted church makes for an ideal creative countryside retreat. The open-plan downstairs, where the pews used to be, has been given over to create a vast double-height space with one double bedroom leading off it and a single and master bedroom found upstairs. The building was originally constructed as a Methodist chapel, and it retains some of that spiritual atmosphere, with a piano, drum kit and guitar – plus a fully equipped kitchen – at hand for whenever musical or culinary inspiration strikes.  Located in the village of Briston and just fifteen minutes from the coast, it's a great base to explore the natural beauty of the area and charming towns like Holt and Cromer. The butcher, baker and greengrocer (no candlestick maker, unfortunately), plus a Co-op, are only around a hundred metres away. At the same time, the local pub serves good food and is only a short walk away. If you'd like to see how the other half live, there are many stately homes and gardens to visit nearby, including Sandringham, the Blickling Estate and Holkham Hall, all within a thirty-five-minute drive.
