There's a real sense of tradition at this Grade II-listed Georgian millhouse, which is nestled in the sleepy hamlet of Worthing on the edge of the Blackwater River. Every nook and cranny harks back to the home's heritage, from the stone walls to the gorgeous wooden beams. We're blown away by how much room there is – while parents sip tea in the sunroom or snooze in the cosy bedrooms, kids can hide themselves away in the loft, listening to records and gaming on the Playstation.

But when you're not playing pool in the game room, warming your toes in front of the wood-burning fire or rustling up a hearty supper on the Stanley cooker in the kitchen, chances are, you'll be making the most of the weather out in the garden. The 1.5 acres of land runs right along the river, where swans, herons and the occasional otter come to play. At one end, you'll find an apple orchard, the other a folly, and in between, there's more than enough space to kick a ball around, host barbecues and lounge in the sunshine. Plus, it's just a five-minute walk to the nearest pub and driving distance to many more – not to mention only a thirty-minute drive from the picturesque Norfolk coast. We think it's the perfect retreat for some family fun in the countryside.

The 19th-century stable block has been transformed into a cosy country bolthole for a family or group of friends. You can spot the village’s old church tower from your private garden, where a patio provides a place to sit in the sun and fire up the gas barbecue, and a vast lawn stretches before you. Or, head inside to the sunny kitchen diner where dining is set for the whole group. We adore the private woodland here, where you can enjoy all kinds of flora and fauna, from birdsong to blooming wildflowers, streams, and lakes – it’s an incredibly serene idyll. You'll be based on the outskirts of Gressenhall, a rural Norfolk village that has quaint village shops and a local pub. Norfolk, a cathedral city known for its sublime views, is a 30-minute drive away and the stunning beaches of the North Norfolk coast are just as close.

The 16th-century rectory, once home to poet William Cowper, was replaced in 1852 by Rev Barry, brother of the Parliament architect. This 150-year-old cottage is the perfect place to unwind and explore the corners of the Norfolk countryside that have barely changed in that century-and-a-half. At first glance, you're sure to notice the period features including wooden beams and narrow doorways, but this home has been lovingly brought up to date with plush furnishings and warm spotlights. The kitchen, too, feels decidedly contemporary with its Sonos speaker and Nespresso machine. Climb the ornate spiral staircase to the bedrooms, all of which enjoy green garden views, and clock the freestanding rolltop tub in the bathroom. Surrounded by walking trails and lush grounds, it’s a real escape – as soon as you spot the mansion-like house on the approach, you’ll feel your worries melt away. 

Ideal for entertaining large groups, this home has heaps of space, with a room for every occasion. You might begin your day in the breakfast room, tucking into a hearty breakfast together as you plan your day. Perhaps you’ll then sip coffee in the orangery, which looks out over the heated swimming pool. After a dip, tennis might be on the cards, or if that’s a little too energetic, perhaps a refined game of croquet on the lawn? You might explore the grounds, or curl up in the sitting room with a book and enjoy some peace and quiet. Kids will love the games room on the second floor, where they can play table football and watch movies. 

If you’ve something to celebrate, the formal dining room is a fabulous spot for dinner. You’ll dine beneath a chandelier in this grand space – you’ll definitely want to pop open the Champagne. For more informal meals, we love the alfresco dining area. Fire up the barbecue and dine late into the evening outside, alongside the pool. It’s easy to forget you’re in England here – it feels almost Mediterranean. 

There’s plenty to keep you at the house during your stay, but if you want to venture out, you’ll be well rewarded. There are gorgeous walks along River Wensum to be discovered, starting from the 17th-century Raynham Hall just outside the village. Further afield, you can paddle in the shallows at Holkham Beach, which is thirty-three minutes away by car. Nature-lovers will want to drive the thirty-two minutes to the seal colony at Blakeney Point – it’s a wonderful sight. 

There’s something for everyone at this fabulous home. You’ll be planning your return visit before you’ve even left the grounds.

Not far from the Norfolk coast, you can explore the marshes in Cley-next-the-Sea, spot seals in Blakeney or sprawl out on the sandy beaches in Wells-next-the-Sea and Holkham, about twenty minutes away by car.

Golden Syrup

This gorgeous barn conversion, made of local flint and brick, is nestled in a tranquil spot in the glorious Norfolk countryside. We love the character here, especially the vaulted ceilings and exposed beams in the living space. This country retreat is perfect for entertaining your family and friends. On warm days, relax in the sheltered courtyard or the undercover seating area with its twinkly lights – ideal for a glass of Champagne as the light fades. A wildlife lovers paradise, you'll see your host's Guineafowl roaming around, while you may be lucky enough to spot barn owls or otters in the surrounding area. Pensthorpe Natural Park, as featured in BBC's Springwatch, is a fifteen-minute drive away, while Sculthorpe Moor Nature Reserve, home to the Hawk and Owl Trust is under a ten-minute drive. It's the same distance to the market town of Fakenham, with its weekly market, cinema, bowling centre and shops.  On the other hand, if you fancy a day at the beach, this home is only thirty minutes in the car from the North Norfolk coast, much of which is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

This cosy home is perfect for country getaways for two. It’s a peaceful space that’s been renovated from an old schoolhouse – in the courtyard you can still spot some of the little ones’ markings. Perhaps the happy history of the home imbues it with a laid-back vibe, because this is a place for relaxing – and spending quality time together, of course. 

When you wake up in the morning after a comfortable night’s sleep, you’re greeted by a leafy view through the window. Take your morning coffee out to the south-facing courtyard and start your day by breathing in the fresh, country air. The market is held every Wednesday, and there are plenty of independent shops, cafes and pubs to visit. 

If you want to get out into the countryside that surrounds the home, you have plenty of options. You could drive ten minutes to the Marriott’s Way route – this 26-mile path between Norwich and Aylsham is wonderful on foot or by bike. The Broads National Park is thirty-four minutes away by car, and you can be paddling on Cromer beach in thirty-six minutes. 

After a day out exploring, you can breathe a sigh of relief when you return to the peace of the old schoolhouse. Sip a glass of wine in the courtyard or curl up under the beams by the electric wood burner.

The long living area fits everyone in for dinner and games, and the large kitchen means you don't need to eat out every night – instead, enjoy the seclusion offered by the home's location and try some rustic cooking. The interior isn't very modern, and the bedrooms look a little dated here. That said, we love the skylights – what a perfect way to wake up in the mornings.

This versatile converted barn is guaranteed to make the whole family smile. The interiors are welcoming and spacious, with traditional ceiling beams and a wood-burning stove where you can get toasty. The zip and link beds give you the choice between twin or super king-size set-ups, meaning that the sleeping arrangements are flexible for families and friends. Guests of all ages can get competitive in the on-site games room with a round of table tennis, air hockey or pool. There's also an outdoor playground and a boules court, along with a patio with a barbecue for when you need to refuel. On sunny days, we recommend that you pour a glass of something cold and settle down to admire the gorgeous views across the serene lake. Located near the north Norfolk village of Briston, this barn is within easy walking distance to a pub, two shops, a bakery and a butcher. Plus the gorgeous Norfolk coast is just four miles away, if you fancy breathing in some sea air. The nearby town of Holt has numerous tea rooms and restaurants plus there's the chance to catch a steam train along the Poppy Line coastal track.

Flexible Stay

Designed in the Italian garden style, the patio here is sure to transport you from the expansive Norfolk landscape straight to the Italian Renaissance. Dine al fresco, bask in the sunshine and enjoy the sweet smell of the roses in spring and summer. You’re also more than welcome to explore the larger grounds, shared with the owners, to catch a glimpse of the barn owls, pheasants, deer and more. Competitive guests can also engage in a game of tennis on the private court. Inside, the recently converted stable boasts original wood beams, double-height ceilings and a striking, modern mezzanine which connects the main living area to the bedrooms. Luckily, all rooms benefit from large windows that, thanks to this home’s position on the edge of the Glaven Valley, offer picturesque views of the countryside and the abundance of wildlife that lives here.

If you're looking for a luxurious, romantic retreat in Norfolk – this newly refurbished cottage could be the place for you. Unwind with a glass of Champagne in the hot tub at the end of the beautiful garden, filled with roses and other cottage garden plants. Later, settle down in the reading corner, next to the log burner, with a good book and a glass of wine from the wine chiller. We adore the vistas over the green and village pond from this cottage – it's the picture-perfect view. As night falls, have a long soak in the free-standing bath with the organic toiletries provided – utter bliss. Your lovely hosts have thought of everything to make your stay comfortable, from bathrobes and slippers to treats for your four-legged friends (if you're bringing the pooch). The next day enjoy breakfast in the light, contemporary glass dining room overlooking the garden. Then, pop over the road for lunch if you don't fancy cooking – one of the top five gastropubs in the area is right opposite. Afterwards, perhaps walk off all that lovely food with a stroll around the village with its pretty duck ponds. For a day at the beach – Old Hunstanton Beach is a thirty-minute drive away – so you can have the best of both coast and country. It doesn't get much more idyllic than this.

Perched on the edge of Blickling Hall Estate and fringing the chocolate-box village of Oulton, the setting for this adult-only hideaway is dreamy. All the cottagecore essentials are ticked off with original beams, a wood-burning stove, and a pretty, south-facing garden to call your own. Although it’s worth noting the home’s low beams and restricted head height might not suit the vertically blessed. With no amenities within walking distance, you’ll need a car here. Head to Holt for a dose of sea air (a twenty-minute drive). Or, closer to home, nearby Aylsham for a taste of market town life.

After a day exploring, return to your cosy cottage, for a relaxed evening in front of the wood-burning stove. Knock up a hearty meal in the country-style kitchen – to be enjoyed out on that divine, private patio.

Shopping fans will rejoice knowing the bustling city of Norwich is reached in thirty-five minutes by car while those who prefer to be closer to nature can enjoy a spot of birdwatching in nearby Buxton Heath. 

Return to your abode in the evening for a hearty supper in the dining area. And when it’s time to call it a night, sink into the comfortable beds and drift off into a deep sleep.

Fix up a comforting dinner in the kitschy kitchen or, if you're not in the mood to cook, grab some fish and chips from your local. We can’t think of a better way to end the day than with a soak in the freestanding copper tub before sinking into your sheets and the log fire flames dancing away in the background.

This yellow cottage dates back to the 1850s, so if you're looking for traditional charm with contemporary twists, this is the place for you. Our favourite spot is the light-filled conservatory, which is the perfect spot to indulge in afternoon tea or a glass of wine under the curved roof.

In the living room, cosy is an understatement – plush sofas beckon you to curl up with a good book beneath the wooden beams, while the wood burner and collection of board games are the very things for chillier nights at home. Come dinnertime, make your way to the kitchen and cook up a storm on the Aga stove, preparing a range of mouth-watering fare to share in the dining room. Better yet, dine alfresco in the sun-kissed garden as the day slowly fades and feel the salt-tinged air on your skin.

 Brinton is a small hamlet tucked away from the more lively spots on the Norfolk Coast. But that doesn't mean it's boring – you'll find excellent walking footpaths and cycling routes along the lanes, as well as an award-winning pub in Hunworth a short drive away. Holt is close by, too – ideal if you're after cafes, art galleries, boutique shops and fantastic restaurants. If it's the sea you crave, head to Wells-next-the-Sea or Holkham – both about a half-hour away by car.
