A rural retreat with an almost embarrassing amount of charm, this thatched home dates back centuries and represents the best of Norfolk's architectural style. Carefully modernised and curated with stylish wall colours, art and a mix of antique and contemporary furniture, it's a fabulous space to unwind in unique surroundings. As well as a stunning historic home, it boasts a large, enclosed garden and a summer house to die for.  

Inside, the stripped-back, authentic character of this place is evident in the ancient beams, brick floors and inglenook fireplace. A comfy velvet sofa provides a modern twist but otherwise, the living room is dressed like it would have been a hundred years ago or so. Elsewhere there's a delightful country kitchen, a casual dining room and a midnight-blue TV room, along with a useful utility room and three gorgeous bedrooms.

And outside you'll find pretty gardens, along with a greenhouse and a deck for enjoying the sun. Step inside the summer house for the biggest surprise though. A lovely space for friends and family to socialise and eat together, it comes with a Scandinavian-style indoor barbecue cabin. 

Around half an hour's drive from both Diss and Norwich, you'll be deep in the country here so a car is essential, but there are great walks to be had nearby and the coast is around forty-five minutes away. Visit Southwold, Lowestoft and more for days out by the sea.

There are too many good things about The Hobart Spring to list, but suffice to say that it’s every bit as good as it looks. Most of the buildings date to the 1470s, when Sir James Hobart (later attorney general to the king) built his family home. Our favourite room (not an easy decision) is the kitchen, which looks beautifully traditional, but alongside the Aga, has an electric oven, gas hob, espresso machine and more. You can also pick herbs from the raised beds in the back. Either as a gateway to the Broads, or as a destination in itself, you can’t go wrong.

At this turn-of-the-nineteenth-century barn, there is very little reason to leave. From arranging private catering to archery lessons and more, your hosts are keen to ensure you are well looked after. There’s also a tennis court with rackets and balls for guests to use, a wonderful outdoor hot tub, secure bike storage and over thirty acres of beautiful countryside to explore. Thanks to the patios courtyard, guests can enjoy romantic outdoor dining at the long table on a summer’s evening. On rainier days, make yourself at home in the Moroccan-style summer house and gaze out into the garden with its picturesque pond. 

Inside, the barn is just as impressive as its surroundings. Eclectic decor – willow-pattern plates on the wall, a Moroccan bathroom, and all manner of vintage contraptions like typewriters, cameras and even haridryers adorning the rooms – bring the place to life. Beautifully presented rooms with hardwood floors and timber-beamed ceilings, make this spacious home feel like a quirky, modern farmhouse. The sitting room is like a conservatory, with its wall of glass, and plush tufted sofas are lit by theatre spotlights. The kitchen is country-chic with a four-door Aga for rustic-style cooking and the dining table can host group banquets.  

You’re in the heart of the Norfolk countryside here, with walking trails and rolling scenery on your doorstep. Though if you do want a day trip to the city, Norwich is a forty-minute drive.

The city centre of Norwich is only a twenty–two–minute drive away and is filled to the brim with eateries, shops to browse, and charming pubs to while the hours away as a family. Bracon Ash is a short walk away with a wonderful playground for the children as you tuck into a light bite under the sun – or a tasty homemade picnic.

Fondly referred to as the City of Stories, Norwich doesn’t like to do things by the book. And if the buildings here could talk, you’d certainly hear a tale or two. You’ll find almost every type of architectural style – from the modernist Norman-Foster designed Sainsburys Centre, to the Art Deco city hall, the medieval castle and Brutalist angles over at the University of East Anglia – but this charming home in a period property keeps things simple. Set in the hip Golden Triangle area, less than a fifteen-minute walk into the city centre, the space has been designed by someone with a keen eye. Antique and modern furniture sit together seamlessly in the welcoming living room – we love the oversized driftwood mirror hanging above the tiled, original fireplace – and the vintage Cinzano adds a touch of whimsy next to the stoic, 19th-century-style portrait. The history of this home has been preserved immaculately, while at the same time, modern comforts are around every corner. Either as a gateway to the Broads, or as a destination in itself, you can’t go wrong.

The facilities available at the hall are second to none, with no need or whim uncatered for, including perfectly equipped kitchens, games room, library, a wealth of entertainment, cosy open fires and woodburners, lawns and meadows, and even a moat, and should you wish to prize yourself away from this phenomenal home and head on out to explore, the bustling seaside town of Great Yarmouth is just a twenty-seven-minute drive away, while the Norwich city centre can be reached in twenty-two minutes by car, and is perfect for those shopping needs. We highly recommend trying out the cosy pubs around the area for a good pint and perfect company.

In the heart of The Golden Triangle (also known as 'the Notting Hill of Norwich'), this flat is nestled among local pubs, cosy cafes, delicious restaurants and leafy parks. Plus, it's just a fifteen-minute walk to the city centre or you can catch a bus from the stop right outside the flat.

Pocket-sized yet cosy, we think this home is a great option for solo travellers, couples or those in town on business. The layout makes the most of the square footage – the bed is tucked away behind a small wall and the fully-kitted kitchen has a stylish bar-top counter with stools instead of the usual dining table. Looking at this modern home, set in the rural countryside of Norfolk, you might not be fully convinced of its former life as a dilapidated cattle farm, but the clues are there if you know where to look. The wooden beams, for one, add plenty of character and warmth, and so does the exposed brick.

The other benefit of it having been a farm, is that there is acreage for days. In almost every direction you look, you’ll be met with untamed flora to make mornings seated out front with a fresh coffee the sort of peaceful affair you need to fully unwind. A city rich in Medieval history, we'd recommend a visit to Norwich's famous 11th-century market. Or have a stroll around Norwich Lanes and its independent boutiques. Other attractions include the smallest pub in the UK and Norwich Cathedral, while a little further afield, Whitlingham Lake is worth a look, especially if you like water activities such as kayaking and canoeing.

Back at this home, pour a glass of wine and stroll through the grey-painted French doors into the pretty courtyard garden with its climbing plants meandering up the walls. Or relax inside with one of the books from the living or dining room shelves. Upstairs, we love the main bedroom with its plush mustard velvet sofa – the perfect spot for a cheeky G&T. If you’re looking for a real away-from-it-all retreat that’s truly one of a kind, then look no further than this home on the Norfolk Coast. Featured on Channel 4's Homes by the Sea, it’s located right next to the dunes at Winterton-on-Sea, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A former working lighthouse, it’s perfect for a peaceful stay with a surreal fairytale quality. When we visited, we were particularly impressed by the unusual round rooms that stack up on top of one another. Once filled with nautical equipment, these are now well designed spaces with beautiful furniture and objects, including an impressive library, bunk-bed room for kids, living room, and finally a lofty viewing platform bedroom (not for the faint hearted). Down on ground level you’ll find a contemporary open-plan space where you can cook in the shiny stainless steel kitchen or bask in the warmth of the wood burner as you eat dinner in the relaxed dining area. Folding doors give access out into the small garden for picnics or al fresco breakfasts. Families in particular will love the easy access to seaside life, including great fish and chips, good local pubs, parks and boat-trips. The Norfolk Broads is also nearby; the UK's largest wetland area, it's perfect for boating, cycling and walking. In short, this is a great home for those who want to experience everything a Norfolk staycation has to offer, while staying somewhere with real wow factor.

We can see why this cottage was in The Sunday Times' Coolest 100 Cottages' list – it's a Jacobean dream, full of original character and quirky features. Once home to the miller of Plomesgate Mill, it now houses wonderful antiques, such as a fantastic 1700s Breton bed built straight into the wall, a gorgeous oak four-poster and a working 1800s kitchen range. 

Enjoy a tasty full English breakfast (courtesy of the welcome hamper provided by your lovely hosts Beverley and Martin) in the farmhouse style kitchen. Or when the Suffolk sun is shining, dine in the pretty, wisteria clad courtyard. If you’re lucky enough to be here in August and September, there's a mulberry bush in the grounds that guests are welcome to pick fruit from – perfect for making some jam or muffins.

Something else we adore here is the owner’s beautiful private nature reserve behind this home. Take the dogs for a walk through the meandering footpaths that wind through meadows and ancient woodland. In spring, you’ll see captivating carpets of cheerful daffodils, bluebells and primroses. Whatever time of year you come, though, you’ll be treated to an array of wildlife, from nuthatches to woodpeckers.
 
There are maps to find the footpaths going onwards to Snape Maltings, an arts complex on the banks of the River Alde, just over two miles away. Or head to Aldeburgh (seven minutes in the car) – you can borrow some bikes and cycle there in around thirty minutes too.



Jacobean Gem

This pretty 16th Century cottage is full of character and light. Relax on the large enclosed courtyard with its beautiful blossom tree and flower baskets – it’s the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of rosé wine. At night the tree is lit up with twinkling lights giving the space a magical feel.

If it gets a bit chilly, head inside and sit next to the large inglenook fireplace with its cosy wood-burning stove. We love this room with its historic beams and antiques. If you don’t fancy eating out, rustle up a dinner using some local fresh seafood from the fisherman’s huts at Aldeburgh, a twenty-minute drive away.

Closer to home, the centre of Wickham Market is 50 yards away, where you’ll find a range of shops including a butchers, antique store and beauty salon, as well as an arts centre. There are a couple of restaurants here as well as a fish n’ chips shop, while there are many pubs nearby, including one in the village of Ufford, a one to two-hour walk from the cottage (or a four-minute drive). Your lovely hosts provide bikes for free, too, if you want to explore the area on two wheels.

The living room has that country essential, a log burner, too. We love the bedrooms here – one has French doors that open onto the courtyard front garden, while the other has a Juliet balcony. What about the address? Well, the location is great – this home is situated in Burnham Market, a picturesque, leafy village with plenty of boutiques, while about six miles away lies Wells-next-the-Sea.

This is an extra-special home in the grounds of an award-winning boutique vineyard. It’s been carefully curated to offer everything you might need during your stay, and for you to enjoy your visit in the lap of luxury. 

The home is a contemporary villa with vast windows looking out onto the vineyard and the rolling countryside that surrounds the property. The open-plan living and dining space is perfect for chatting over food and sipping wine – there’s even an honesty box wine bar for you to sample the wines produced by the vineyard. A striking nickel bar – like at The Ivy – has pride of place in front of the huge picture window overlooking the vineyard. There are also full height glass patio doors which open onto a wonderful private guest garden and patio.

Outside, pop open a bottle of chilled white or rosé wine and sink into the jacuzzi while the barbecue heats up. When the weather is fine, you won’t want to be anywhere else – there’s a comfy sofa and loungers, ideal for relaxing, and a tennis court if you want to work up a sweat. Dining outside with beautiful views laid out before you is utterly idyllic, especially when the sun starts to sink in the sky. 

If you feel the urge to explore, there’s plenty to see and do in the vicinity. The villa is a four-minute drive from Toppesfield village, where you can enjoy a meal in the community-owned pub. Finchingfield, the most photographed village in Essex is 10 minutes drive. For history enjoy a stroll around Castle Hedingham with its thatched cottages and amazing Norman castle. Saffron Walden, a medieval town – is thirty-six minutes away. There you’ll find a wealth of independent shops, cafes and restaurants around the buzzy market square as well as beautiful historic buildings, gardens, museum and art gallery. 

This is a memorable home for romantic visits to this picturesque area on the Essex/Suffolk border. Make sure you take a bottle of the vineyard’s award winning wine home with you – it’s the perfect memento.
