The market is held every Wednesday, and there are plenty of independent shops, cafes and pubs to visit. 

If you want to get out into the countryside that surrounds the home, you have plenty of options. You could drive ten minutes to the Marriott’s Way route – this 26-mile path between Norwich and Aylsham is wonderful on foot or by bike. The Broads National Park is thirty-four minutes away by car, and you can be paddling on Cromer beach in thirty-six minutes. 

After a day out exploring, you can breathe a sigh of relief when you return to the peace of the old schoolhouse. Sip a glass of wine in the courtyard or curl up under the beams by the electric wood burner.

With ‘little’ being the operative word, this tiny hamlet is landmarked by a village hall, local church, and gorgeous traditional cottages like yours. Coming home to this adobe after a day in the city is a real taste of country life

We love the colourful flowers around the entrance, creating a magical scene lifted right from a fairytale. There's a real sense of tradition at this Grade II-listed Georgian millhouse, which is nestled in the sleepy hamlet of Worthing on the edge of the Blackwater River. Every nook and cranny harks back to the home's heritage, from the stone walls to the gorgeous wooden beams. We're blown away by how much room there is – while parents sip tea in the sunroom or snooze in the cosy bedrooms, kids can hide themselves away in the loft, listening to records and gaming on the Playstation.

But when you're not playing pool in the game room, warming your toes in front of the wood-burning fire or rustling up a hearty supper on the Stanley cooker in the kitchen, chances are, you'll be making the most of the weather out in the garden. The 1.5 acres of land runs right along the river, where swans, herons and the occasional otter come to play. At one end, you'll find an apple orchard, the other a folly, and in between, there's more than enough space to kick a ball around, host barbecues and lounge in the sunshine. Plus, it's just a five-minute walk to the nearest pub and driving distance to many more – not to mention only a thirty-minute drive from the picturesque Norfolk coast. We think it's the perfect retreat for some family fun in the countryside.

This baby blue timber lodge is just as cute on the inside as it is on the outside. We're absolutely smitten with the whimsical vibe, be it the seashell feature wall in the master bath, the vintage furniture in the downstairs lounge or the collection of cutesy crockery lining the kitchen walls. There are a lot of modern conveniences too, including a Bluetooth speaker, two flat-screen TVs and a remote-controlled shower. And the location couldn't be better – on your doorstep are Holt's charming shops, cosy pubs, quaint cafes and local art galleries. After a day strolling through town or exploring North Norfolk, come back home to fire up the barbecue in the garden for an alfresco meal. Then unwind with a soak in the tub or pop a vinyl on the record player as you relax on the sumptuous sofas, a glass of bubbly in hand.

Is there anything more quintessentially British than staying in a converted pub? We don't think so. Dating back to 1715, this Grade 2 listed ale house in the North Norfolk town of Holt is a delightful escape. Recently refurbished, the owners have taken great care to restore the original wooden beams, brickwork and fireplaces. We love the bedrooms, all named after teas. After a busy day, there’s nothing better than relaxing in front of the wood burner with some fish and chips from across the road. And of course, pour yourself a pint. You're in a former pub after all.

Surrounded by bustling bars, cafés and shops, you'll have plenty to do in the area. Spend the day strolling through the village – we recommend browsing the local art galleries or having a spot of afternoon tea at one of the many tearooms (there's a charming one right next door). If you're longing for sea and sand, drive fifteen minutes and you'll reach Sheringham Beach and the Norfolk Coast. 


Ale House Dreams

There's a lot to love about this converted barn in the heart of the Norfolk countryside. And its peaceful setting, surrounded by woodlands, water meadows and gardens are just the beginning. How about a tennis court? And, of course, what would a home in the Broads be without water access? This place has it all. On the River Bure, adventurous types can bring a canoe or paddle board, and even paddle along to the nearby riverside pub. You'll have your own fishing spot if that's how you prefer to spend your afternoons, or just bring your binoculars and look out for otters, kingfishers and more. With fifteen acres of land to explore, there are great walks to be had from your doorstep, and here you'll be about twenty minutes by car from Norwich in one direction, and the stunning Norfolk coast in the other.

You'll be based on the outskirts of Gressenhall, a rural Norfolk village that has quaint village shops and a local pub. For a day excursion, the nearby town of Dereham (a ten-minute drive) has a golf course, swimming pool, and bowling. Norfolk, a cathedral city known for its sublime views, is a 30-minute drive away and the stunning beaches of the North Norfolk coast are just as close.

Approached through a gated entrance and onto a gravel drive, everything about this place is pretty special. Tucked away in a select group of Grade II listed buildings, this home may be historic but it's modern and stylish inside. The living room is the heart of the home, with comfortable furnishings, and there's a smart kitchen with a walk-in pantry and a pretty dining nook with bench seating for six. With everything thought of, there are books and games for rainy afternoons and outside a lovely lawned garden and barbecue patio for when the sun shines. On the edge of the Georgian town of Holt, it's an easy walk to the shops, pubs and restaurants, and just a short drive to the Norfolk coast and the towns of Sheringham and Cromer.

As you'd expect from a lighthouse cottage (built in 1680), this home has sea views from the private garden and the living space. We love that the bedroom has been formed from the circular base of the lighthouse tower (though the bathroom is back up the stairs off the living room). And the good news is this lighthouse doesn't have a fog signal, so you won't be woken in the middle of the night. When you feel like exploring, a ten-minute stroll along the coastal path will take you to the North Norfolk town of Cromer, with its sandy beach and an array of shops and restaurants. Or for golf lovers, adjacent to the lighthouse is a golf course.

If you're looking to get away from it all, this home is in the ideal spot. All on the ground floor, it's set in a wing of a Grade II listed Palladian Villa and surrounded by 200 acres of unspoilt parkland. Originally built in the 1930s for use during the shooting season, the main part of this impressive house is now a family home. Beautiful arched windows let the sunlight stream into the spacious living room and offer views out over the grounds. 

Step straight from your door to explore the woodland, meadows and lakes of this vast estate – and if you're lucky, you'll catch a glimpse of deers, badgers, otters and all kinds of birdlife. Or enjoy a few games of tennis on the owner's outdoor court. 

It's only a four-minute drive to the nearest pub, or it's a fifteen-minute ride to the delightful coastal town of Cromer with its pier walk, crabbing, and fish and chips by the shore. By day you can explore the area's sandy beaches, walk the Norfolk Coastal Path or discover the National Trust properties of Felbrigg Hall and the Blickling Estate (a ten and twenty-minute drive, respectively).

And, if you need to refuel, there is a range of bars and restaurants to pick from just a matter of steps away from your front door. With such a central location in the heart of the city, you're truly spoilt for choice.

Quaint and cosy, this old shoemaker's cottage in the heart of Cromer is a perfect seaside retreat for two. It's just a two-minute walk from Cromer Beach and the Victorian pier, making it a top-notch spot for couples to unwind. 

Inside, the home hasn't lost any of its traditional charm, thanks to the wooden floors, timber beams and vintage furniture. Lighthouses and wooden shoes line the shelves, paying homage to the cottage’s excellent seaside location as well as its history. The living room is warm and comfortable — on chilly nights, snuggle in front of the electric fire with a good book and a glass of wine. While the kitchen is on the smaller side, it still has everything you need to whip up a quick breakfast or light lunch. 

When it's time for dinner, we recommend grabbing a bite to eat at one of the fabulous restaurants, delis, and cafés in town, then finishing off the evening with a nightcap at the pub across the road.
