This cosy home is perfect for country getaways for two. It’s a peaceful space that’s been renovated from an old schoolhouse – in the courtyard you can still spot some of the little ones’ markings. Perhaps the happy history of the home imbues it with a laid-back vibe, because this is a place for relaxing – and spending quality time together, of course. 

When you wake up in the morning after a comfortable night’s sleep, you’re greeted by a leafy view through the window. Take your morning coffee out to the south-facing courtyard and start your day by breathing in the fresh, country air. You might like to stroll seven minutes into the centre of Reepham to explore the charming market town. The market is held every Wednesday, and there are plenty of independent shops, cafes and pubs to visit. 

If you want to get out into the countryside that surrounds the home, you have plenty of options. You could drive ten minutes to the Marriott’s Way route – this 26-mile path between Norwich and Aylsham is wonderful on foot or by bike. The Broads National Park is thirty-four minutes away by car, and you can be paddling on Cromer beach in thirty-six minutes. 

After a day out exploring, you can breathe a sigh of relief when you return to the peace of the old schoolhouse. Sip a glass of wine in the courtyard or curl up under the beams by the electric wood burner.

Perched on the edge of Blickling Hall Estate and fringing the chocolate-box village of Oulton, the setting for this adult-only hideaway is dreamy. In the coach house, you’ll find an additional full kitchen and open-plan living area with a ping-pong table. This baby blue timber lodge is just as cute on the inside as it is on the outside. The local village of Banningham is small — albeit with a well-recommended gastropub — and there are plenty of outdoor excursions to fill your days with nearby. The birthplace of Anne Boleyn, Blickling Estate, takes ten minutes to reach in the car, while Cromer Beach is a seventeen-minute drive away, too.

And when you can tear yourself away from this sanctuary of peace, the local village of Stibbard is a scenic place to wander around. Or hop in the car to discover Pensthorpe Natural Park, only a seven-minute drive away. You'll also be in easy reach (a ten-minute drive) of the market town of Fakenham, renowned for its pubs, eateries and shops.

A home for all seasons, the toasty warmth of the wood burner is welcome in winter, while in summer, the barbecue draws you outside for a spot of alfresco dining. The quaint village pub is just a five-minute drive away or a twenty-minute walk for those feeling energetic, and what you’ll find isn’t your run-of-the-mill pub – it offers spa treatments, too. For trips further afield, we recommend driving to nearby Holt where you can visit the North Norfolk Railway or dip your toes into the sea at Salthouse beach.

There's a real sense of tradition at this Grade II-listed Georgian millhouse, which is nestled in the sleepy hamlet of Worthing on the edge of the Blackwater River. Every nook and cranny harks back to the home's heritage, from the stone walls to the gorgeous wooden beams. We're blown away by how much room there is – while parents sip tea in the sunroom or snooze in the cosy bedrooms, kids can hide themselves away in the loft, listening to records and gaming on the Playstation.

But when you're not playing pool in the game room, warming your toes in front of the wood-burning fire or rustling up a hearty supper on the Stanley cooker in the kitchen, chances are, you'll be making the most of the weather out in the garden. The 1.5 acres of land runs right along the river, where swans, herons and the occasional otter come to play. At one end, you'll find an apple orchard, the other a folly, and in between, there's more than enough space to kick a ball around, host barbecues and lounge in the sunshine. Plus, it's just a five-minute walk to the nearest pub and driving distance to many more – not to mention only a thirty-minute drive from the picturesque Norfolk coast. We think it's the perfect retreat for some family fun in the countryside.

You'll be based on the outskirts of Gressenhall, a rural Norfolk village that has quaint village shops and a local pub. For a day excursion, the nearby town of Dereham (a ten-minute drive) has a golf course, swimming pool, and bowling. Norfolk, a cathedral city known for its sublime views, is a 30-minute drive away and the stunning beaches of the North Norfolk coast are just as close.

Location-wise, there’s plenty to walk to in Holt, but you’ll need a car for beach days. Get off to a flying start in Blakeney, just five miles away.
