Throw in a good mix of Georgian architecture, cobbled roads, leafy suburbs, and sights to see, and you’re onto a winner whenever you’re looking for a city break. 

When you’re not visiting said restaurants, or sussing out the best opportunities for a holiday selfie, you might be holed up in a cosy cafe with an extra large coffee as you devour the book you’ve just purchased at the second-hand store. Walk past the University of Bristol as you head to 1532 Bristol to catch a show at the performing arts theatre. 

Back home, let the breeze through by opening every skylight and simply sink back into the corner sofa and catch up on a series. Later, move family-time out into the garden as you dine alfresco – if the weather allows it, you might even choose to stay there with a board game until the sun finally sets.

If you’re in Bristol for a city break, you’ll be pleased to hear the artisan stalls and street food outlets of charming St Nicholas Market are a ten-minute stroll away and there are plenty of swanky restaurants lining the waterfront just outside your front door. You’re also just a ten-minute walk from the main train station, so this place is ideal for those who want to explore the city on foot.

Inside, gold-trimmed stools at the breakfast bar and tufted velvet sofas in chestnut-brown are a plush look back at yesteryear. The slate-grey kitchen hides myriad mod cons for meals at home, and the living room has an wood-burning stove for a little cosiness. High double doors from the 19th century connect the living and dining room with the kitchen, creating an open-plan feel and corniced ceilings sit alongside modern sculptures for an eclectic feel. When it comes to bedtime, bedrooms are soothing spaces of crisp white and pops of botanica and birdlife, courtesy of fabulous prints on the walls.

This stylish and luxurious apartment sits right in the centre of Bristol. Just outside the front door, you’ve got the old harbour and waterways lined with swanky restaurants. Head into the old city, a ten-minute walk away, and peruse the artisan stalls and street food offerings at trendy St Nicholas Market, where narrow streets are illuminated by stringed lights. 

The decor has a touch of vintage charm, evident in the wrought-iron and dark-wood bar stools that line the breakfast bar. The kitchen is a vision of sleek white modernity, where plenty of cupboard space leaves a satisfying minimalism and clear surfaces. Perhaps our favourite thing about this apartment is the deep, free-standing tub in the master bedroom. The view outside the windows to the barges in the river outside isn’t bad either. 

A Good Deed

Set on one of the most delightful Georgian squares in Bristol (and that’s saying something), this elegant period townhouse is a dream come true. The location is unbeatable – it's sandwiched between leafy Berkeley Square and Brandon Hill Park, which offers fabulous views of the city and is a great place for a picnic as the sun starts to set. From this spot, you can walk to all the best restaurants and attractions in Bristol, including Clifton Village – home to independent shops, cosy pubs and gorgeous terraced houses – as well as the city centre. With its ample rooms, grand ceilings and antique-style furniture, the interior radiates traditional character. Keen cooks can flex their culinary muscles in the charming kitchen, or better yet, you can arrange a catered feast with the on-site hosts, one of whom is a trained chef. There are seven cosy bedrooms to choose from (some even offer glimpses of Cabot Tower), while a comfortable living/dining room is perfect for when you want a relaxed evening in.

No trip to Somerset is complete without a visit to Cheddar Gorge, and from this home, you can be there in less than ten minutes. Perfect for families who love the great outdoors, it's a modern eco lodge on a small, rural park development. Just be sure to make it home for dusk – there's no finer place to watch the day turn to night than in the bubbling hot tub. Turn on the LED lighting to set the mood and let the stars be your only entertainment.
