The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). A shared entrance hall leads up to the front door, on the second floor, and it's thanks to this elevated position that you'll be able to take in fabulous views of the boats, the Swing Bridge and the rooftops across the water. The open-plan living area is sociable and smart, with comfortable sofas, a big dining table and a well kitted-out kitchen. Quirky wall art and decorative pieces give the place some added character and we love the little seating areas in each window. On the south side of the harbour, you'll be just a five-minute walk from the '199 Steps' which take you up to the scenic ruins of Whitby Abbey.

Thanks to its prime coastline location and eclectic history, Whitby has been drawing in tourists for hundreds of years and if you're tempted to pay a visit, this home is a great base from which to explore the Yorkshire town.

Rather ironically, it's what lies outside that makes this apartment special – gaze out through the windows and you're treated to a sublime view of the North Sea. There's also a private balcony just off the kitchen in case you fancy starting the day with coffee and the sun on your skin – can't we be optimistic?

There's also a lot to like about the interiors, too. The design in the living room is a quirky mix of vintage and contemporary, as seen with the tan leather sofas sitting underneath a grand chandelier. You'll find the kitchen to be decently enough sized for bouts of home cooking and there are no complaints about the minimalist bedrooms, either.

So, what's there to do nearby? Well, quite a lot as it happens. West Cliff Beach and the promenade are about five minutes' walk from the front door, while the famed Whitby Abbey and 199 steps are just over twenty minutes away on foot, crossing the River Esk in the process.

We can already picture ourselves sinking into the plush sofa with a cup of Yorkshire brew after a day in the fresh sea air. Outside, a charming little patio beckons on summer days – it's a sweet spot to enjoy a glass of wine and nibble on Wensleydale cheese as the sun slowly sets. There's also a sleek kitchen ideal for rustling up lighter bites, a glossy bathroom and a sumptuous bedroom that will leave you feeling well-rested and ready to explore.

The enviable locale makes exploring a breeze. Spend the afternoon dipping in and out of the independent shops, old-world pubs and delicious eateries in the city centre, or head down to the waterfront pier and Blue Flag beach for a taste of the seaside. You also can't miss the famous ruins of Whitby Abbey or the 199 Steps – the views from the top of the hill are hard to beat.

Set in the picturesque Teesdale landscape, this historic property is located near the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District National Park, as well as the North Pennines Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests can admire the ornate roof beams carved from oak trees felled over 400 years ago in the dining hall, and relax in the cosy living room with a wood-burning stove set within a Tudor fireplace. The bedroom features a double bed on an oak floor adorned with Persian rugs and offers stunning views of the walled garden and the high moors beyond. The property also boasts an enclosed courtyard garden and two designated parking spaces. Up to two well-behaved dogs are welcome for a small additional charge.

You're just a few steps away from Flowergate, surrounded by a flurry of chic bars, delicious restaurants, local shops and historic pubs. West Cliff Beach and the charming seafront is just a five-minute walk away, so days spent lounging in the sun and splashing in the waves are a given. Add in the proximity to Whitby's other hotspots – be it the Church of Saint Mary, whale-watching boat tours, museums and the Cleveland Way – and this pocket-sized pad is a perfect fit for a couple on a seaside getaway.

It doesn’t get much more bucolic than this charming stone cottage near Sandsend beach. Set within acres and acres of private estate, you’ll find this country bolthole in a row of terracotta-roofed cottages dappled with ivy. Towering trees and manicured gardens surround the spot for a bit of away-from-it-all feeling. Yet, a fifteen-minute walk sees you at Sandsend beach where a coastal stroll has you in the centre of Whitby in forty minutes (subject to tides). Here you’ll find myriad seafood restaurants, traditional fish and chip shops and beachside (and literary) attractions. If you want to stick closer to home, the estate’s grand hotel has an exceptional restaurant, a five-minute stroll away. Inside the cottage, you’ll find a striking sage-green living room that feels distinctly modern, despite the idyllic facade. It continues into the surprisingly spacious kitchen where you’ll find everything you need for self-catering. Out the back, you’ve got your own little patio for an alfresco tipple in the summer breeze to the sound of a babbling stream. 

Ivy & Sea Grass

This cosy house is perfect for family breaks to the seaside. It stands on the edge of East Cliff, just a ten-minute walk from Whitby’s town centre and its narrow medieval streets lined with pubs, shops and comfy cafes. You can walk easily to the west side of town, where you’ll find the Blue Flag West Cliff Beach and its brightly coloured beach huts. Add in the wonderful Whitby Abbey and its rich history, and you’ll never be short of things to see and do here. 

The house itself is warm and welcoming, with heaps of space. It’s an excellent choice for a big group of friends or a couple of families travelling together, as there’s plenty of room for everyone. We love the balcony that opens out from the living room – it boasts gorgeous views of Whitby and its harbour, and is the perfect spot for a morning cuppa. Later on in the day, you might pick up takeaway fish and chips to unwrap on one of the picnic tables on the terrace. It’s a lovely way to round off a day at the seaside.
