This charming cottage in Robin Hood's Bay has character in spades. Its interior, filled with quirky maritime antiques, harks back to the town's smuggler history – in the eighteenth century, silk, tea, and gin were illegally brought ashore on the Yorkshire coast in such quantities that the alcohol was used for cleaning windows. Even today, the lively village is full of winding narrow lanes, with fishermen selling their fresh catch of the day. Walk for two minutes, and you'll be on the sandy beach - perfect for sunbathing or rock pool exploration. The village of Robin Hood's Bay is just five miles from the seaside delights of Whitby (and its two-mile-long beach). It's also part of the North York Moors National Park, so you can forget about the city and hike through unspoiled nature or take the authentic steam train through the hills for a more relaxed scenic journey. The house itself is warm and welcoming, with heaps of space. It’s an excellent choice for a big group of friends or a couple of families travelling together, as there’s plenty of room for everyone. We love the balcony that opens out from the living room – it boasts gorgeous views of Whitby and its harbour, and is the perfect spot for a morning cuppa. Later on in the day, you might pick up takeaway fish and chips to unwrap on one of the picnic tables on the terrace. It’s a lovely way to round off a day at the seaside.

Rather ironically, it's what lies outside that makes this apartment special – gaze out through the windows and you're treated to a sublime view of the North Sea. There's also a private balcony just off the kitchen in case you fancy starting the day with coffee and the sun on your skin – can't we be optimistic?

There's also a lot to like about the interiors, too. And for a spot of culture, the 300-year-old Scarborough Castle is just a short walk away.  

Back home, this three-storey, newly renovated Victorian townhouse is immaculately presented throughout. Kick off your sandy shoes in the inviting entrance hall and make your way into the vast living spaces. While your nominated chef rustles up dinner in that made-for-action kitchen, kids will be kept busy in the dedicated playroom right next door, complete with a flat-screen TV, PlayStation 4, and books aplenty. Then all retreat into the cosy separate sitting room to hunker down for film nights or keep the night flowing with board games around the dining table – there's room for everyone.

With big bay windows, wood floors and all-white walls, it's a modern and spacious home from home, just steps away from the town's many restaurants, cafes, shops and pubs. A shared entrance hall leads up to the front door, on the second floor, and it's thanks to this elevated position that you'll be able to take in fabulous views of the boats, the Swing Bridge and the rooftops across the water. The open-plan living area is sociable and smart, with comfortable sofas, a big dining table and a well kitted-out kitchen. Quirky wall art and decorative pieces give the place some added character and we love the little seating areas in each window. On the south side of the harbour, you'll be just a five-minute walk from the '199 Steps' which take you up to the scenic ruins of Whitby Abbey.

Get hearts pumping as you make your way up the famous 199 stone steps – it's an easy twelve-minute walk from your front door to the bottom, and you'll be rewarded with magnificent harbour views once you make it to the top. Or maybe you'd prefer to take the kids to the popular Captain Cook Memorial Museum, just a ten-minute stroll away. Even the ancient Whitby Abbey is reachable on foot in twenty minutes, where you'll be able to admire the stunning Gothic architecture.

This converted chapel school sits in the beautiful rolling hills of the North York Moors and behind the well-preserved exterior lies a truly unique home. Set within acres and acres of private estate, you’ll find this country bolthole in a row of terracotta-roofed cottages dappled with ivy. Towering trees and manicured gardens surround the spot for a bit of away-from-it-all feeling. Yet, a fifteen-minute walk sees you at Sandsend beach where a coastal stroll has you in the centre of Whitby in forty minutes (subject to tides). Here you’ll find myriad seafood restaurants, traditional fish and chip shops and beachside (and literary) attractions. If you want to stick closer to home, the estate’s grand hotel has an exceptional restaurant, a five-minute stroll away. Inside the cottage, you’ll find a striking sage-green living room that feels distinctly modern, despite the idyllic facade. It continues into the surprisingly spacious kitchen where you’ll find everything you need for self-catering. Out the back, you’ve got your own little patio for an alfresco tipple in the summer breeze to the sound of a babbling stream.
