This charming cottage in Robin Hood's Bay has character in spades. Its interior, filled with quirky maritime antiques, harks back to the town's smuggler history – in the eighteenth century, silk, tea, and gin were illegally brought ashore on the Yorkshire coast in such quantities that the alcohol was used for cleaning windows. Even today, the lively village is full of winding narrow lanes, with fishermen selling their fresh catch of the day. Walk for two minutes, and you'll be on the sandy beach - perfect for sunbathing or rock pool exploration. The village of Robin Hood's Bay is just five miles from the seaside delights of Whitby (and its two-mile-long beach). It's also part of the North York Moors National Park, so you can forget about the city and hike through unspoiled nature or take the authentic steam train through the hills for a more relaxed scenic journey. After a long day of seeing the sights, return to this special cottage to warm up by the open fire or get the barbecue going on the patio in the summer months (perhaps accompanied by a gin and tonic you've smuggled in).

For a larger seaside town, drive fifteen minutes north to Whitby and take in its ancient architecture and cliffs - known to have inspired Bram Stoker to write 'Dracula' during his stay there. Rather ironically, it's what lies outside that makes this apartment special – gaze out through the windows and you're treated to a sublime view of the North Sea. There's also a private balcony just off the kitchen in case you fancy starting the day with coffee and the sun on your skin – can't we be optimistic?

There's also a lot to like about the interiors, too. This apartment in a new complex is set slightly back from the harbour (away from the busiest areas), but you can still reach the very centre in under ten minutes on foot. And as it’s on the top floor of the building, the views are spectacular. From the balcony, you can see across the rooftops to the ruined abbey on the hill, famously part of the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s Dracula. As is often the case with penthouse homes, the elevation also means that's there's lots of natural light too. The white walls and reflective surfaces work to emphasise this asset, which floods in through the skylight as well. Add to that a minimalist kitchen and a modern bathroom finished in particularly sleek grey tiling, and you have an apartment that is equally as covetable as the location.

Quirky wall art and decorative pieces give the place some added character and we love the little seating areas in each window. On the south side of the harbour, you'll be just a five-minute walk from the '199 Steps' which take you up to the scenic ruins of Whitby Abbey.

Add in the wonderful Whitby Abbey and its rich history, and you’ll never be short of things to see and do here. 

The house itself is warm and welcoming, with heaps of space. It’s an excellent choice for a big group of friends or a couple of families travelling together, as there’s plenty of room for everyone. We love the balcony that opens out from the living room – it boasts gorgeous views of Whitby and its harbour, and is the perfect spot for a morning cuppa. Later on in the day, you might pick up takeaway fish and chips to unwrap on one of the picnic tables on the terrace. It’s a lovely way to round off a day at the seaside.

Even the ancient Whitby Abbey is reachable on foot in twenty minutes, where you'll be able to admire the stunning Gothic architecture.
