This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot). 

There's plenty to do in the lands beyond, too, if you'd rather up the ante. The North York Moors national park is just a three-minute drive away (forty minutes on foot).

In the heart of Pickering, this stone charmer is just a six-minute walk from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Inside, wooden beams and ornamental fireplaces reflect the home's 200-year-old history, while two cosy lounges – including one with a log burner – provide plenty of space to sprawl out. We're especially fond of the rear garden, which is a sweet spot to enjoy a morning brew or an alfresco G&T. A huge perk is that this pad is pet-friendly, welcoming one well-behaved dog to join in on the fun. Despite the plain bedrooms and basic bathrooms, overall, we think it's a good option for families keen to explore North Yorkshire.

Sitting just on the cusp of the North Yorks National Park in the charming town of Pickering, this home has all the ingredients for a refreshing country getaway. 

In the living room, you'll find comfy furnishings arranged around a log burning stove, as well as some lovably quirky touches, like the wooden stag head mounted on the wall and the repurposed chest used as a table. Upstairs, the comfy bedrooms are matched by an equally pretty bathroom, complete with a contemporary freestanding bathtub ideal for lazy Sunday morning soaks.

Outside, there's a small courtyard, as well as designated bike storage with wall-mounted racks. Thankfully, you're not exactly short of places to pedal to either — Scarborough can be reached in just over an hour and a half's cycling. Closer to home, Pickering Castle is five minutes' walk away and a station for the restored heritage railway line that travels sixteen miles through North Yorkshire is even nearer.

Packed with antiques collected over the years and grand yet striking rooms, this home in Hemsley is a real find. A red-brick facade and topiaried hedges set the tone as you arrive, and inside you’ll find a collection of hand-carved bureaus and cast iron bathtubs. Making this cosy cottage the perfect base for a walking or cycling holiday. Warm interiors offer a serene space to relax after a hike on the Moors and an inviting space for socialising over a board game by the woodstove. Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.

This home in Egton is the perfect compromise between seclusion and a beach holiday. With only six miles separating you from the seaside town of Whitby, you can easily take a quick road trip to spend the day on the sandy shores of West Cliff beach. Whilst there, be sure to walk the promenade for a gorgeous view of the Church of Saint Mary and try your hand at the claw machine in the pier arcade. After a lunch of fresh seafood, head to the Whitby Abbey, a fourteen-minute walk from Whitby Beach, to visit the renowned ruins that inspired Bram Stoker’s gothic novel Dracula.
