Perched above the tiny village of Rosedale Abbey, this former vicarage has beautiful views of the rolling Yorkshire countryside. There’s a local shop, tea room, pub and café within walking distance, but it’s all about rambles into the countryside here. Despite the historic building, the interior is stylish and modern with three separate lounges to spread out across – a sunny orangery extension, and two formal living rooms with working fireplaces. Bedrooms are cosy spots for sound sleep, but it’s the barbecue deck outside that takes the cake with a panoramic view of the valley and hills.

In the heart of Pickering, this stone charmer is just a six-minute walk from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Inside, wooden beams and ornamental fireplaces reflect the home's 200-year-old history, while two cosy lounges – including one with a log burner – provide plenty of space to sprawl out. We're especially fond of the rear garden, which is a sweet spot to enjoy a morning brew or an alfresco G&T. A huge perk is that this pad is pet-friendly, welcoming one well-behaved dog to join in on the fun. Despite the plain bedrooms and basic bathrooms, overall, we think it's a good option for families keen to explore North Yorkshire.

This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot). 

There's plenty to do in the lands beyond, too, if you'd rather up the ante. The North York Moors national park is just a three-minute drive away (forty minutes on foot).

With only six miles separating you from the seaside town of Whitby, you can easily take a quick road trip to spend the day on the sandy shores of West Cliff beach. Whilst there, be sure to walk the promenade for a gorgeous view of the Church of Saint Mary and try your hand at the claw machine in the pier arcade. Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.

Packed with antiques collected over the years and grand yet striking rooms, this home in Hemsley is a real find. A red-brick facade and topiaried hedges set the tone as you arrive, and inside you’ll find a collection of hand-carved bureaus and cast iron bathtubs. The living room is a vision of deep red with swathes of velvet curtains and an original fireplace keeping things warm in winter. A smaller, cosy family snug is set around a wood-burning stove so the group can easily spread out. In contrast to the rest of the house, the dine-in kitchen is decidedly modern with concrete-grey walls, plush leather dining chairs and a wall of glass looking out over the garden. Though the blue AGA is a nod to farmhouse tradition. If the weather is fine, dinner can be served outside on the patio at the long dining table. An old cherry tree provides patio shade on sunny days and if you visit in Spring, you might catch the blossom falling like snow. If you don’t fancy cooking in the kitchen or firing up the barbecue, there’s a handful of cosy country pubs in Hemsley town, a two-minute walk away.

This pretty retreat is in the historic market town of Helmsley, sits on the edge of the North York Moors National Park. The 110 mile-long Cleveland Way National Trail begins in Helmsley and takes you through the heather-clad hills of the Moors to the cliffs and coast of Filey Brigg – a nine-day trek in total, but you can stop your car at any point along its length. Making this cosy cottage the perfect base for a walking or cycling holiday. Warm interiors offer a serene space to relax after a hike on the Moors and an inviting space for socialising over a board game by the woodstove. Pour a glass of wine and put your feet up in the living room, before getting some "me time" with a pamper session in the luxurious bathrooms – two of which have their own TVs. With your favourite soundtrack playing through the Sonos Soundsystem in the background rustle up some comfort food in the kitchen for an evening in. On warmer days, dine alfresco out on the patio amidst the fresh country air. We highly recommend embarking on one of Dalby Forest's beautiful walking trails on a clear night to see if you can spot the milky way. 

When you return, there's nothing like a home-cooked meal after a busy day, especially on a chilly night. Gather the family around the dining table and throw some logs on the wood-burning stove to create a cosy atmosphere while you tuck in. Post-dinner, retire to the living room to share a bottle of wine or relax with a long soak in the bath.

This cosy house is perfect for family breaks to the seaside. It stands on the edge of East Cliff, just a ten-minute walk from Whitby’s town centre and its narrow medieval streets lined with pubs, shops and comfy cafes. You can walk easily to the west side of town, where you’ll find the Blue Flag West Cliff Beach and its brightly coloured beach huts. Add in the wonderful Whitby Abbey and its rich history, and you’ll never be short of things to see and do here. 

The house itself is warm and welcoming, with heaps of space. It’s an excellent choice for a big group of friends or a couple of families travelling together, as there’s plenty of room for everyone. We love the balcony that opens out from the living room – it boasts gorgeous views of Whitby and its harbour, and is the perfect spot for a morning cuppa. Later on in the day, you might pick up takeaway fish and chips to unwrap on one of the picnic tables on the terrace. It’s a lovely way to round off a day at the seaside.
