This elegant cottage in the ancient town of Pickering had us on the private outdoor terrace alone. But step inside, and this home keeps on surprising. 

We'd call it a love nest for two, but it's just too big for that. Crash out in the snuggly living room, with rattan accents and statement lighting, bringing a dash of modernity. Rustle up a meal in the made-for-action gallery kitchen. Then settle down for a tête-à-tête and evening meal in the separate dining room, with french doors leading out onto that terrace. 
When legs are weary after days exploring the Yorkshire Dales, sink into the enormous freestanding bath, and upstairs, a luxurious bedroom awaits to bank a peaceful night's sleep. 

Just outside this home, wander-worthy cobbled streets lead down to a medieval castle and the town's very own steam railway station to transport you back in time (both less than five minutes on foot). 

There's plenty to do in the lands beyond, too, if you'd rather up the ante. The North York Moors national park is just a three-minute drive away (forty minutes on foot).

Set in one of the most beautiful parts of Yorkshire, this formerly derelict barn was chanced across by its owners in 2015, and lovingly converted into the stunning home it is today. The vibe is English country, with real moments of grandeur. With antlers on the walls, fine china ornaments, touches of tartan, and a solid teak dining table that wouldn’t look out of place in a stately home, it’s the kind of place you can imagine a hunting party coming back to after a day out on the moors. The grand feel continues in the bedrooms, each of which is as luxurious as the last but has its own unique design. We can see ourselves spending windswept days walking the hills of God’s Own Country before returning to pre-dinner drinks by the fire in the snug (the original stone floor is particularly gorgeous). Once the kids are set up with a movie in the second living room, a candlelit meal around the dining table beckons, followed by a session in the wood-fired hot tub.

We're especially fond of the rear garden, which is a sweet spot to enjoy a morning brew or an alfresco G&T. A huge perk is that this pad is pet-friendly, welcoming one well-behaved dog to join in on the fun. When it’s finally time to soak up the charms of Whitby, you won’t have far to go – all the must-sees are within walking distance. Get off to a flying start with a visit to the Abbey Ruins – set high on the hill with magnificent views of the town, there’s no better way to get your bearings. Then lose yourself to the charming winding streets of its centre – there’s plenty of traditional inns and cafes to dive into should thoughts turn to food. Or follow the little River Esk down to the beach for fish and chips suppers overlooking the sea – there’s no finer place to be.

Open the door onto Yorkshire country life with a stay at this characterful stone-built cottage, set in the gently bustling market town of Kirkbymoorside.

Carefully reimagined for modern living, the magnificent, beamed ceilings and exposed stonework remain to add charm and character. While a light-drenched sunroom with original flagged flooring feels firmly in the 21st century – it’s the perfect spot for morning coffees and afternoon lolls with the papers. Or take things outside to the suntrap courtyard in the summer months.

Upstairs, the two sunny, elegant bedrooms are spread over two floors, so you’ll have some extra privacy here. Though prepare for a tussle for that main bedroom with one hug of a king-sized bed, views of the Yorkshire Wolds, and a separate dressing room.

Back downstairs, rustling up a bite to eat is a delight in the traditional, farmhouse-style kitchen – or skip the cooking and head to Kirkbymoorside’s bakeries and traditional inns, all just a short walk away.

When you’re suitably refuelled and ready for an adventure, you’re perched right on the southern boundary of the North York Moors national park for bracing walks or, a smidge further, days on the coast. After something a little more gentile? Then the historic city of York is an afternoon well spent.

This cosy house is perfect for family breaks to the seaside. It stands on the edge of East Cliff, just a ten-minute walk from Whitby’s town centre and its narrow medieval streets lined with pubs, shops and comfy cafes. You can walk easily to the west side of town, where you’ll find the Blue Flag West Cliff Beach and its brightly coloured beach huts. Add in the wonderful Whitby Abbey and its rich history, and you’ll never be short of things to see and do here. 

The house itself is warm and welcoming, with heaps of space. It’s an excellent choice for a big group of friends or a couple of families travelling together, as there’s plenty of room for everyone. We love the balcony that opens out from the living room – it boasts gorgeous views of Whitby and its harbour, and is the perfect spot for a morning cuppa. Later on in the day, you might pick up takeaway fish and chips to unwrap on one of the picnic tables on the terrace. It’s a lovely way to round off a day at the seaside.

On the other side of Whitby, you will find narrow medieval streets with boutiques and pubs. Plus, roughly a twelve-minute walk from your door, you can also discover the ruins of Whitby Abbey, which was the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s classic gothic novel, ‘Dracula’. What’s more, you can even go on a ‘Dracula’ experience, reachable in just six minutes on foot from this home. 

To make the most of your seaside escape, the Blue Flag West Cliff beach, and promenade are just a five-minute walk away. While nestled on the West Cliff, lining Pier Road – which can be reached in eight minutes on foot – you’ll find arcades for hours of fun on rainy days and Whitby’s famous fish restaurants serving the catch of the day because it simply wouldn’t be a beach holiday without fish and chips. 

On sunny evenings, take advantage of the courtyard on the ground floor of this home, and dine alfresco before ending the evening with drinks on the balcony to admire the views one last time. Then curl up on the comfy sofas to relax after an exhausting day of exploring and climbing the famous 199 steps up to the Church of Saint Mary. Finally, slip into the plush bedding and luxury linens to ensure you have a great night's sleep, ready for another day of adventures.

Once you've wandered about this home nestled away in the North Yorkshire countryside for the first time, it probably won't come as a surprise to learn that it was once a hotel. The vast size of the building and its grounds partially give the game away, but there's also something about how the communal areas are arranged, especially the pool table and bar that make it an especially sociable space.

You'll also get a sense of the home's heritage pretty quickly as well. Located on a farm that dates back to the 18th century, there's a strong rustic charm throughout the interior, from the wooden ceiling beams and stone archways to the open fireplace that's wonderful to retire next to after a long bout in the great outdoors. 

Speaking of which, there's a whole host of amenities on the grounds for when the forecast is being kind to you. As well as a large lawn and lots of equipment for playing games, there's plenty of seating for alfresco feasts, as well as a hot tub that's an idyllic spot for a nightcap, especially once the stars are out in the sky.

In the local area, there's a wealth of attractions to be discovered, from the Victorian spa town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea just two-and-a-half miles away to the Cleveland Way National Trail, which can be reached on foot and rewards those that follow the path with views of the dramatic coastal landscape.

No Warmer Welcome

Recently refurbished, there's a bit of a natural connection going on in the interior design of this home in the village of Stamford Bridge. As well as house plants dotted liberally about the place — often in unique pots — we spotted an array of woven furnishings and artwork dedicated to the great outdoors. We should also mention the actual outdoors space at this point, too. Step out the back door and you'll find a patio with alfresco seating and a barbecue, which will both come into their own on summer evenings. This overarching theme feels apt given the beautiful countryside within easy reach of the property. The charming Fairy Sanctuary attraction at Northwood Trail is only eighteen minutes away on foot, while the Howardian Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty takes about the same amount of time in the car. If you fancy a day in town, however, the centre of York is only a twenty-five-minute drive.
